TravelAir Peace Takes Delivery Of Second Brand New E195- E2 Aircraft by Ctorch(op): 10:03pm On Mar 18, 2021
Nigeria’s largest airline, Air Peace, on Thursday took delivery of its second brand new Embraer 195- E2 aircraft out of 13 it ordered for in 2019.

This comes two months after it acquired the same kind of aircraft amidst pomp and pageantry.

The second delivery arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, around 2pm on Thursday.

There was a ceremonial water canon by the firefighting officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) when the aircraft landed.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the airline, Mr. Allen Onyema, stated that with the arrival of more of the brand new aircraft, the airline would gradually phase out old planes in its fleet.

But he said the airline’s order for the 10 Boeing Max 737 planes is still intact, noting that the order would not be cancelled.

Onyema said, “With the arrival of more brand new aircraft, we might be phasing out any ageing Boeing Aircraft in our fleet but we are not phasing out Boeing. Don’t forget we have an order for 10 Boeing 737 Max. Our order is still intact. We are not cancelling it.

“Once all these E195-E2 aircraft arrive, it will provide over 8000 jobs beside energising our economy. We are happy to be a participant in boosting the GDP of our country. This is the mission of this airline. This airline was created to create jobs.”

He said the brand new aircraft would be deployed for its regional and domestic operations.

Onyema added, “What you are witnessing today is the power of a vision. When we started in 2014, we knew that by 2017, we would start acquiring the 777 jets. When the time came, we became the first airline in Nigeria to acquire the Boeing 777 and now, we have three of such jets.

“When it was time to service airports with low traffic like Minna, Akure, Makurdi, Jalingo and other places, we acquired eight 50-seater Embraer 145 jets. While we were doing it, we didn’t lose sight of the need to start planning for brand new jets. In September 13, 2018, we became the first airline in Sub-Saharan Africa, to pay for 10 Boeing 737 Max 8 and our order is still intact, we won’t cancel it.

“While the Max was having some issues, we decided to go for Embraer 195-E2 after meticulously studying it. We became the first in Africa to pay for 13 brand new planes and we would be acquiring 17 more to make it 30.

“These planes shall be deployed to domestic and regional routes. These jets are the best. By the time we get everything, we would be providing 8000 jobs to Nigerians. “

PoliticsND Militants Abandon Jonathan, declare Support For Yahaya Bello As Next President by Ctorch(op): 7:16am On Mar 18, 2021
Militant leaders in the Niger Delta are routing for Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi state as next president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. *The militants are convinced that Yahaya Bello, who is seen as the youngest governor in the country has displayed some good leadership qualities *The manner in which he handled the North package of food to the Southern part of the country is legendary. *They said all other leaders kept quiet but Bello took the gauntlet and mediated, thereby saving the nation from avoidable crisis. *The militants are convinced that with this mindset of Bello, he would do well if elected president of Nigeria. *They are of the view that these old men should be sent packing from political offices and give way to the youths to lead the nation. *Though there are insinuations that former President Good luck Jonathan is eyeing a return to the seat of power, the militants kept silent but decided to throw their weight behind Bello A coalition of militant groups, the Reformed Niger Delta Avenger (RNDA) and peace advocacy groups from the Nine States of the Niger Delta region have commended the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello over his quick intervention during the food blockade to the southern part of Nigeria by the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria (AUFCDN), declaring that his action thwarted plans by some unscrupulous elements to ignite the North versus South crisis. The coalition, which is made up of Nine Militant groups under the aegis of the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers (RNDA) and Niger Delta Advocate For Peace and Good Governance (NDAPGG) declared that Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello has shown, with his quick intervention, that he is a young man that shown signs of uniting the Northern and Southern part of the country along the path of true peace and unity. The RNDA and NDAPGG, in a statement issued and signed by its leader, Major Gen Johnmark Ezonebi also known as Obama, stated that they are more convinced by the prompt move made by the Governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello to prevail on northern traders in foodstuff and cattle traders in the South to a round table discussion in Abuja to address issues that led to protest and blockade of foodstuff supply to the Southern part of the country. According to the group, the prompt intervention of Gov.Yahaya Bello was commendable, “because no sitting politician took such drastic initiative, rather they were all bent on overheating the polity along myopic and tribal sentiments that could lead to loss of lives and property through hatred utterances and inciting statements that instigates violence and hatred speeches that could divides the country apart” On the rising pressure on the Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello, to contest the 2023 Presidential election, the RNDA and the NDAPGG declared their readiness to mobilise and support the Presidential aspiration of Gov. Yahaya Bello.

According to the groups, ”the declaration of support for Gov. Bello is not a mere aggrandizement,” but taken to encourage the young Governor to sustain the tempo in order to keep Nigeria as one which he has demonstrated so far. The young and energetic Governor has shown that there is hope and integrity in the young people in Nigeria’s political terrain to move the nation forward. Governor Yahaya Bello is setting the space and leading the forefront of the next political atmosphere come 2023.We will all queue behind him and join forces with him to retire these old brigades who have held this country to ransom.” “The leadership of the RNDA that is made up of other nine-militants groups from the region who are agitating for the overall development of the region has commended the leadership style of Governor Yahaya Bello for his tireless efforts for coming out to address national issues to end nepotism, colonialism, power drunk and old method of holding future of our great Nigerian youths to ransom”. “We are indeed impressed with Governor Bello’s bold step and peace initiative to stabilize our co-existence as people from different nationalities within 24 hours. It seems to be a miracle, in fact, God raised him to be the nation’s Savior who delivered over 200 million Nigerians including their property from planned bloodshed and the looming bombshell that was pregnant before us which was sponsored by some evil men in power who are disciples of colonialism, tribal bigots and men of religious coloration that does not mean well for the peace and unity of this country who call themselves leaders”. “The wading in of Governor Yahaya Bello in the imbroglio that would cause a sour taste in our mouths as a nation would have been devastating and catastrophic if not Gov Yahaya Bello for his brave sensitive approach, We the Agitating Militant groups in the creek under the RNDA were also fully prepared and ready to cut down the flow of the oil from the creek and also we would have not allowed any oil or fuel supply to go to the northern part of the country before but for the timely intervention of Gov Yahaya Bello who Initiated the dialogue process to bridge the grievances of the northern foodstuffs traders and the cattle traders in the south and engage both parties to shield their sword for the peace and unity of the nation” “We do not hesitate to support Governor Bello’s peace initiative and we are ready to partner with him to foster peace, equity, justice, unity, love and fairness for our country. His (Bello) action was never expected to settle the dust the food blockade protest would have cost the peace of the country and overall economy in the midst of second wave of COVID-19 pandemic. We saw the situation of food blockade embarked upon by northern traders to the south, and it was really degenerating within the days it lasted. This was not a good sign for the unity of the county”. “We were also concerned on the untold hardship this action caused in the lives of Nigerians. Particularly those in the south, and not until Governor Bello took it upon himself to broker peace as he successfully convinced those who went on the protest. We are highly elated and delighted to show our heartfelt gratitude on the amazing and selfless service you are rendering to Nigerians from the North to South, East to West, geopolitical zone. The vision you have for Nigeria is clearly seen on your aim of uniting this country and for all Nigerians to have a sense of belonging, and we have seen this act of statesmanship in your moves to stabilize Nigeria as you have just done in this foodstuffs traders blockage saga and the good governance of peace and security and bridge building wish you have brought to Kogi State within this period of you being the Governor of the State”. The groups also pledged that they will ensure the presidential ambition of Governor Yahaya Bello is achieved, “We will ensure your peace initiative is given all the necessary support from the creek and backups it needed especially in the Niger Delta region because your impact is being felt already by those in creeks of the Niger Delta region, in Northern, western and Eastern parts of the country. We want you to be rest assured that our support for you is unrelenting and focused because the people of the Niger Delta recognize and listen to us when we approach them, and that we will do on your behalf when you declare your intention to run for president come 2023”

PoliticsOtu Odu Practice In Anambra And Anioma Part Of Delta State by Ctorch(op): 7:07pm On Mar 14, 2021
Otu Odu Practice In Anambra and Anioma Part of Delta State

There are four cardinal institutions in Onitsha culture charged with the progress , development and peace of the local community.
One of these groups is the Òtù Ọdụ , which is the elite women ’ s socio- political and economic group that young Onitsha women often aspire to .
Often referred to as Ndị Ọdụ, Iyom or Òtù Enyi , these women either bought the rights to the title or had relatives who bought the rights to either wear ọdụ aka (ivory bracelets) or ọdụ ụkwụ ( ivory anklets) or both.
Ọdụ means Elephant Tusk and in Onitsha custom , Igbu Ọdụ in plain terms means wearing of the tusk . It is a rite of honouring a woman for her excellent service in life .
It used to be conferred as a form of appreciation on a mother by her children at a certain age or a dutiful wife by her husband .

It was also limited to Onitsha women who are either indigenes , direct relations , or by marriage . These women are expected to have distinguished themselves in their respective capabilities and have been found worthy of the title.
The initiation system starts with a formal expression of intent by the woman who wishes to be initiated . This move allows the leaders of Ndi Otu Ọdụ to set up a process to find out more about the candidate and determine whether they’ re eligible or not .
For this , questions into the character, personality, and integrity of the person are brought to the conversation .

When this is satisfactorily done , an intermediary who is a member of Ọdụ Society and knows the initiate so well to introduce her to the society is appointed as her mediator and the process continues leading to the initiation , which is known as Ikwo aka Ọdụ.
The ceremony is accompanied by the okike instrument or giant tusk . The women in this group are typically allowed to carry the Nza or horsetail, akupe or ceremonial fan, which are all signs of chieftaincy .
They also carried mkpo alo or small ivory , which usually only titled men in Igbo land carried . After the initiation is done , a special initiation name or title is conferred on the woman and she is addressed by that title before her surname.

One of the major visible processes from this ceremony is wearing the Ọdụ (elephant tusk ) on the woman. The elephant tusk is a rare , precious, and expensive item and is one of the most sought ornaments on the continent .
It is a symbol of wealth , beauty , royalty , authority, and class . During the celebration, the woman has to wear it on both hands and legs as a mark of her newfound status in society.

Depending on an individual ’ s financial capability , there are different types of Ọdụ. The complete procedure is called Ọdụ Ukwu N’ aka which means for both the legs and the hands . It could be undertaken for the hands alone and called Ọdụ Aka or for the legs alone known as Ọdụ Ukwu .
The Ọdụ today has changed a bit. At first , it used to be a private organisation of Onitsha women of character and affluence. Now , it has transformed into a prestigious society with modernised rules and functions .

Also , the classic white uniform of Ndi Ọdụ today was not always as it used to be , as there was no special uniform for the sect earlier in the days .

Except for the elephant tusk won gracefully, an Ọdụ title woman wears whatever she likes . It was only recently that the white uniform was later introduced to represent purity as Ọdụ is seen to symbolise .
Today, the Otu Odu remains this very ancient institution that provides a foundation for the elevation of womanhood . This institution has gone on to be adopted by various Igbo communities in Nigeria such as Anioma in Delta state , which the dignity of womanhood is elevated
. It has also been adopted by various Igbo ceremonies in the Eastern part of the country.

Ebonyi Lawmakers in NASS always leak secrets of Igbo senators to North-Joe Igbokwe

When I said that Ebonyi Lawmakers in National Assembly always leak secrets of Igbo senators to northerners, my Igbo brothers insulted me.
I have been vindicated by the action of Ebonyi State government to give land to Fulani herdsmen for ranching.
South East governors agreed not to give land to Fulani herdsmen but Gov. Dave Umahi turned back and accepted to give land for ranching.
Is this the way they want to achieve Biafra?

CelebritiesNigerians Celebrates Peter Okoye For Standing By Wife Lola Omotayo by Ctorch(op): 8:40pm On Mar 08, 2021

Nigerians on Twitter on Monday celebrated one half of the defunct music group P-Square, Peter Okoye now Mr P, for standing by his wife Lola Omotayo despite allegations she was responsible for the group’s break-up and the continued discord between Peter and Paul Okoye.

They have also compared Peter with Prince Harry who has stood by his wife Meghan Markle despite attacks for renouncing their royal privileges.

It all started when a Twitter user named Fredi tweeted: “Really happy Nigerians are encouraging Harry. But it’s weird cos if a Nigerian man supports his wife like this in Nigeria, e go turn to ‘na Jazz’. Everyone will think the man is mad, just like they have painted @PeterPsquare.”

Peter re-tweeted Fredi’s tweet, adding “Life.”

Peter Okoye wedded Lola in 2013 and four years later the music group collapsed.

Paul who now performs as Rudeboy in a recent interview with PUNCH accused Lola Omotayo of showing him love on social media and wishing him bad privately.

Paul also attacked Lola Omotayo on November 18, 2020, when she celebrated him and his twin brother Peter on social media on their birthday.

Peter okoye fought for the love of his life, stood by her when the whole family was against her, disowned his family and left with his wife to find peace… If thats not love i dont know what it is.. PoliticsWe Are Not Ready To Go To War — Yoruba Leaders by Ctorch(op): 11:11am On Mar 08, 2021
We're Not Ready To Go To War With Any Group But We'll Protect Our Region — Yoruba Leaders

Eminent Yoruba leaders have said the South-West is not ready to go to war with anyone but will do everything within their power to protect the region.

They spoke at a press conference in Lagos organised by the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams; spokesperson for Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, and Sola Lawal.

At the event attended by Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Pa Reuben Fasoranti, the leaders said a stakeholders' meeting scheduled for March 17 will proffer the next line of action for Yoruba in terms of security and economy.

They disclosed that the the zone will meet in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, for a non-partisan South-West Security Stakeholders' Group meeting on the said date.

According to Adams, there are different layers by which insecurity can be addressed. This, according to him, necessitated the need for state and non-state actors to work together.

According to him, there is a relationship between good security and buoyant economy.

He said, “We are here to represent our leaders and proclaim this campaign. Yes, we have asked people to return to farm, and the next question is how safe are the farms from the onslaught of herdsmen. We are trying to create different layers to address the insecurity– the government layer and the non-governmental layer.

“The government has started mapping out its strategies by creating an Amotekun corps. But we feel that if the strength of the Amotekun cannot complement the effort of the regular security agencies, we should also support them too.

“This meeting is to address the germane issues besetting the Yoruba nation at the moment. We are bringing together all the relevant security groups to back the government and its agencies up through the South-West Security Stakeholders' Group.

“This will bring the vigilantes, hunters, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC), Agbekoya and other groups together. We will showcase all the leaders of these groups when we have the Pan-Yoruba Conference on the 17th of March at Mapo Hall, Ibadan.”

On his part, Odumakin said the South-West will not be subservient to any other group or people, adding that the stakeholders' meeting will provide a practical roadmap for the region.

“They thought we are going to be begging them but nobody is going to do that. Food security has always been with us, they are the ones threatening our land that made food security a challenge for us. We are not out to fight anybody but let nobody think they can intimidate us in our land, or that they can make us submit to fear," he said.

Also speaking, Lawal said it was only under this kind of umbrella stakeholders' group can the challenge of insecurity affecting the region be effectively streamlined and addressed, adding that interested individuals and groups cannot be left to do things on their own without coordination.

“The Yoruba nation is not ready to go to war with anyone or any group, but the Yoruba nation is ever ready to defend itself and its property. What we have on the ground is a development that came about as a necessity compelled by the moment,” he said.

PoliticsSenator Ekpenyong Recommends Using Sambisa Forest For Ranching by Ctorch(op): 10:39am On Mar 08, 2021
Herders/Farmers Crisis: Ekpenyong recommends using Sambisa forest for ranching

SENATOR Christopher Ekpenyong representing Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District in Akwa Ibom State has recommended that the federal government should encourage security forces particularly the military to rescue the Sambisa forest in Borno State from insurgents and bandits and use it for ranching.

Ekpenyoong who spoke weekend, in Uyo while reacting to the worsening insecurity in the country occasioned by activities of arms bearing Herders in Southern Nigeria, expressed confidence in the approach to bring a lasting solution to the lingering crisis.
His words, “Worsening insecurity in Nigeria today as a result of insurgency, banditry and Herders-Farmers crisis has become a major cause for concern. Thousands of people have been killed, communities have been destroyed. The orgy of killings and destructions is seriously affecting national cohesion.

“For the Farmers/Herders crisis, a comprehensive approach is necessary to address the escalation. And I recommend that the federal government should take over sambisa forest from Boko Haram, bandits and create ranches in order to save our country the agony we are going through currently.
” The Sambisa grazing Reserve of 4800 hectares is an ideal and symbolic place to take-off by establishing a ranch run by the military. It will significantly improve the security situation in the northeast zone and encourage cooperation between pastoralists, communities and the military

“In the Northwest, the military should also be encouraged to create ranches in the Gidan Jaja Grazing Reserve (565,000 ha) for the same purpose of improving security and cooperation with Herdsmen. Cattle rearing is a business and must be done as a business, other than trying to seize land by force”
The former deputy governor of Akwa Ibom State added that there was a need for the leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria to liaise with State governors to acquire land on lease to set up ranching, noting that open grazing was no longer practised anywhere in the world.

He stressed that adopting the piecemeal approach in finding lasting solutions to security challenges bedevilling the country in recent times would not suffice.
“We can co-exist peacefully in this country because Nigeria is the only country we have for now. Nigeria belongs to all of us; it does not belong to only one tribe or ethnic group.
“Government policies must be mutually beneficial to all sections, both Herders and farmers. Any policy that does not take into consideration the welfare of all sides will most likely fail or meet resistance” Ekpenyong advised.

PoliticsEdo APC Worries Over Increasing Presence Of Lunatics In Benin City by Ctorch(op): 4:56pm On Mar 07, 2021
THE Edo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (PC) has expressed concern over the increasing presence of people who are mentally deranged and called on the state government to rid the streets of Benin City and other parts of the state of these people for possible rehabilitation or confinement.
The lunatics are present in every part of the city including Government Reservation Area (GRA) like the golf course road, Aideyan, Osadebey Avenue and other parts of the city. There is hardly any road intersection and streets without lunatics and some constituting nuisance to road users.
The state chairman of the party said the situation may be a result of the collapse of rehabilitation facilities due to official neglect and poor funding by the state government.

In a statement signed by the Assistant State Publicity Secretary of the party, Victor Osehobo, Imuse said the party has found that the menace appears to have witnessed an upsurge with the absence of a functional Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development.
He said, “The unending infighting in the PDP government led by Mr Obaseki, which has deprived the State of a Cabinet of Civil Commissioners and Special Advisers, has not helped matters.
“Forget the claims by the government about its so-called benevolence to healthy citizens, even in the peak of the Covid19 pandemic, don’t these people also need government attention in the area of clothing, feeding and healthcare?
“Only a people-centred government knows that it has a duty to periodically organize a massive exercise to get these people off the Streets, or even realize that such moves would also help a great deal in strengthening the already precarious security situation in the state”.
The state governor, Godwin Obaseki is yet to inaugurate a cabinet and has not also appointed a spokesperson, so Vanguard could not get official reaction from government but civil servant in the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development said “Several times, these people have been picked and taken for rehabilitation but before you know they are back to the streets because there are no adequate facilities to take care of them and there is also poor funding”

CultureOsita Osadebe And Oliver De Coque: The Last Igbo Minstrels by Ctorch(op): 1:17pm On Mar 07, 2021
Osita Osadebe And Oliver De Coque: The last Igbo Minstrel

Music has often been described as food for the soul and I bet you would not put up a fight to that because many a song jolts people into nostalgia and other kinds of feelings. Not solely for the feeling but for the secrets these feelings hold. Music also means different things to different people by playing a role in society as being vital to peoples’ experience and primal to human culture.

The stringing of the guitar in crescendo with the drums and the grand entrance of the trumpet are the popular sounds of highlife music. In the Igbo community, these sounds have been made popular by the likes of Oliver De Coque and Osita Osadebe among others. Through their talent in music, these minstrels used their genre of highlife music to highlight and expand the worldview of the Igbo society. Richly embedded in the traditions of the Igbo people, their songs have been known not only to inform culture, but also to divulge secrets or precepts to life, constantly dishing out advice and commentaries on life’s issues while being a praise singer to the Igbo society home and in the diaspora.

With the invasion of pop music and other aspiring genres of music, the songs of the old like that of Osadebe and Oliver De Coque holds strong in quality and content, offering a greater deal to society of the past and still in the present. These highlife legends were gifted. Guitarist Olive De Coque learnt the mastery of this instrument from a Congolese at a young age, while Osadebe picked his mastery up for his time with the Empire Rhythm Orchestra.

In tune with this, he is known as the Doctor of hypertension because of his musical ability to cajole one with his slow rhythmic vibes; a mellow meditative tempo. This is capped with his Afro Cuban accented bass and percussion borrowing from the Rockers lead lines on electric guitar. With his feel-good music, Osadebe lulls the audience as he dreamily muses, coos, sighs, uses adages, words of wisdom and inspiration. With this, he started the “oyolima” style we know today; a state of tranquillity, relaxation and pleasure.

Long before the 21st-century term “Igbo Amaka” – a phrase that speaks of the appreciation of the Igbo heritage, the Osondi Owendi crooner and his counterparts have since preached these in their songs, always clamouring for unification and community growth of the Igbo people through upliftment and appraisal of the achievements of notable Igbo men and women.

Like the Nigerian artist who follows the steps of social critic, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, the king of Afrobeat who satirically used his songs to radically evokes change politically, and is an emblem to such ideal, this same act with a twist is deployed by Osadebe and Oliver De Coque to nurture better Igbo people and society.

Osadebe, more often than not, chanted in his songs about life and how to navigate in an ever-changing world. Using his songs, he provided a road map to life by unequivocally saying “live in the moment”. An instance is his pioneer with “Peoples Club Odogwu” of 1977.

These feel-good songs of these minstrels do more than just sounds and words but mirror the cultural identity, aspirations, philosophy, history, social and economic system of the eastern part of Nigeria; forming a world view and exposing the rich cultural tradition.

The multiplicity of the function of music cannot be overemphasised having a full impact on people’s feelings and interpretation of events. So the hype, quality and appreciation of their songs are on the premise of cultural principles fused with the instructional properties of the music which therefore serves the dulce et utile. This applies to other non-Igbo societies. Music poses as historical documentation of a particular time in the world and society and these Igbo entertainers through their lyrics envelope it all showcasing through their talents, idioms and philosophical views to life.

PoliticsHistorical Similarities Between Yoruba And Benin, How Ife Beget Benin by Ctorch(op): 9:18am On Mar 07, 2021
Historical Similarities between Yoruba and Benin, How Ife Beget Benin.

Ife and Benin
Magnificent terracotta objects have been found in Nok, in Nigeria, dating back to a period some time between 500 BC and 500 AD. These are the earliest known sculptures on the continent, next to those of Ancient Egypt.

Against this background of creativity and craftsmanship, the Yoruba kingdoms of Benin and Ife sprang up between the 11th and 12th centuries.
Origins

In Yoruba mythology, Ife was founded by a senior deity Oduduwa, acting on the order of the supreme deity Olorun (also known as Oludmare). Oduduwa became the first ruler, or Ooni, of Ife.

We know little of how these early Ooni exercised power or how their territory was administered, or precisely when the kingship started. We know that the landscape out of which Ife (and Benin) emerged consisted of a mixture of tropical forests and savannah land, affording very fertile soil and a high rainfall.

Food and art
One of the keys to understanding the success and wealth of these kingdoms was the ability to provide a significant food surplus. This released labour, which could then be channelled into creating great works of art centred largely on celebrating kingship.
We can still see today an astounding range of objects made of bronze, brass, copper, wood, ceramic and ivory. The superb level of Ife craftsmanship expressed, using the "lost wax" method, is comparable with the finest examples of metal-work in Europe from Classical and Renaissance times.

Historial view
"The art was largely motivated by the culture, the cultural practices of the people. They had to produce certain objects, which they used for certain ritual purposes." - Dr Ohioma Pogoson, historian and lecturer at University of Ibadan, The African Institute, Nigeria

Historial view
"The art of Ife and Benin is so important because one gives birth to the other. The Ife art was the most ancient in the forest region of Nigeria, simply because the Ife civilisation goes as far back as 300 - 500 BC. Therefore, it had developed a lot of artefacts, which marks the history of Ife.
"Ife later gave birth to Benin - Dr Omotoso Eluyemi, director of National Museums and Monuments

Oyo
Ife was at one time considered the most senior Yuruba state. But by the 17th century it was eclipsed by Oyo. Lying further north, Oyo had the military advantage of a cavalry, and the right agricultural conditions to grow cereal. In the 18th century Oyo reached its peak, largely by profits of the slave trade. With the abolition of slavery its power waned. Today Ife continues to be regarded as the spiritual centre for all Yoruba, and the Ooni of Ife has considerable influence in the country.

Benin
The kingship of Benin is closely related to Ife. The first king, or Oba, of Benin is traditionally supposed to be a descendant of Oduduwa, the founder of Ife. The most distinctive examples of Benin craftsmanship are the bronze plaques, which adorned the palace walls. As in the artwork of Ife, the craftsmen of Benin produced bronze and copper heads celebrating the power of the Oba.

The capital of Benin (not to be confused with the modern state of Benin, formerly Dahomey) was south west of Ife. One of the few early written accounts of this centre of power and trade is given by a Portuguese slave trader Joao Afonso Aveiro, who was astounded by what he described as the 'great city of Benin'. Over a hundred years later, a Dutch visitor compared it favourably with Amsterdam. Most of the art was looted by the British in 1897.

Lost wax method
A precise model of the object to be made is constructed out of wax. A mould - usually made out of clay - is then formed round the wax model. This is left to harden. The whole thing is then heated. The wax melts away, hence the expression "lost wax."
This leaves a hollow space in the shape of the model. Molten metal is then poured into this space, filling it completely. When the metal has cooled down and hardened, the mould is broken, leaving the object in its metal form.

PoliticsGovernment Can’t Ban Open Grazing - Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore by Ctorch(op): 9:04am On Mar 07, 2021
The Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, a factional umbrella body for herdsmen in the country, has said it is opposed to the ban imposed on open grazing of cattle by South-West governors. It said the enforcement of the ban was tantamount to an eviction notice.

This is however against the position of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, which at a meeting with some governors in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on January 25, said it agreed with the position of the governors.

The meeting in Akure was attended by the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Ekiti State, Dr Kayode Fayemi; Governors Adegboyega Oyetola of Osun State, Muhammad Badaru of Jigawa State, Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State and Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State. MACBAN was led to the meeting by its chairman, Alhaji Muhammadu Kiruwa, among other attendees.

Apart from South-West governors, governors in the South-East had previously banned open grazing and movement of cows on foot into the South-East.

But in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, the Secretary General of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Saleh Alhassan, said on Friday, “They can’t put an end to open grazing by fiat because grazing is not motorcycle business; there must be an alternative. Secondly, if they say they are going to end open grazing, what is the timeline for it?

“They want to displace herders from where they earn their livelihood. It is not different from an eviction notice – it is just putting the eviction notice into effect. This is very unfortunate because they cannot come out to say they are embracing peaceful herders and then say they are ending open grazing. What do they mean by that? Is there closed grazing?

“From history, right from the time of Moses, grazing is open. By now, they should realise that they will not get the result they are looking for. We are in total support of the National Livestock Transformation Plan. I was part of the committee that reviewed the final document. The programme has a lot of components, and if implemented, it will address a lot of challenges.

“Look at Benue State and how the approach has created a militia. You can’t end open grazing by fiat as if someone is looking for a crisis, and these crises have a way of reverberating.”

Alhassan argued that asking herdsmen to stop open grazing and begin ranching was tantamount to asking farmers to begin mechanisation, without which they wouldn’t be able to do their farming activities.

He added, “If they say herders must begin ranching today, where is the ranch? For someone to develop a ranch, they need at least three to five years for it to mature. The facts are there. Ranches cannot be created overnight but they are just playing politics.”

On the issue of insecurity, he said herders had been victims of rustling and kidnapping and that if insecurity was to be addressed, it was not by making it an ethnic issue, because according to him, there are criminals in every ethnic group.

“It’s sad, because at the end of the day, we end up radicalising the herders,” he said. “When they are radicalised, who will benefit? The country will suffer worse insecurity. That’s why we are against this issue of eviction or ultimatum because it doesn’t work like that. There have not been proper laws at the national level to address these challenges and the National Assembly is just playing to the gallery. Let there be proper laws.”

He said if there had been an increase in the herders moving from the North to the South, it could be due to climate change, insecurity in the North-East, drought caused by environmental factors or Boko Haram.

“All these need to be properly addressed via articulated policies. Politicians should address their differences; they should leave the herders alone, they are in the bush dealing with all kinds of challenges,” he added.

When reminded that Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State, who is also a northerner, had canvassed the restriction of the movement of herders from the North to the South, Alhassan said, “That is where I disagree totally with the Kano State governor. Are they going to stay inside his house in Kano? You must create space for them and not to just talk.”

PoliticsNortherners Won’t Succumb To Mere Intimidation In Southwest, NEF Warns by Ctorch(op): 12:43pm On Mar 06, 2021
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said that northerners living in the Southwest geo-political zone of the country would not succumb to threats and harassment by some groups and individuals in the region.

NEF in a statement yesterday by its spokesperson, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, claimed that some private individuals and groups in the Southwest were being tempted to harass and intimidate other citizens.

While describing the activities of such groups as illegal, the forum noted that northerners would not accept to live and pursue their livelihoods in the Southwest only with their approval.

The forum, however, advised northerners to continue to live in peace with their host communities and explore all avenues to improve better inter-communal relations.

The forum also hailed the decision of the leadership of the Amalgamated Union of Traders and Cattle Breeders Association Union (AUTCBAU) to suspend its blockade of food supply to the South.

The statement read in part: “The Forum welcomes the decision of the Federal Government to address a major and prolonged grievance of transporters over multiple taxation and extortion on federal highways along the country’s eastern corridor all the way from Borno through Adamawa to the states in the Southeast and South-south.

“These illegal checkpoints numbering more than 100 had been pronounced as illegal, yet they had been tolerated by all authorities. Their effects had been to stifle trade and massively raise the cost of transporting food items and cattle. The Forum hopes that this decision will be enforced comprehensively and immediately.

“The Forum is disturbed by the visible involvement of a private citizen identified as supporting threats to security of northern communities in the Southwest in the discussions preceding the resolution of the strike, and the mention of a number of people who had been instrumental to creating intense hostility around northerners living in the Southwest.”

“Indeed, some of the persons mentioned as having been contacted to give assurances to northern traders, herders and transporters have been fingered by the police as being involved in criminal activities against northerners in the Southwest.

“The Forum rejects the idea that the Federal Government or its agents could encourage the outsourcing of its duty and responsibility to protect citizens to individuals who are neck-deep in encouraging violence and corruption of communal co-existence.

“The Forum would rather believe that the involvement of these people was contrived to render its purported intervention valueless. In any case, the involvement of private citizens who represent existential threats to citizens in an exercise designed to give them assurances that they could be safe is abhorrent and unacceptable.”

PoliticsBiden Snubs Buhari As He Made Calls To Presidents of SA And Kenya. by Ctorch(op): 5:25pm On Mar 03, 2021
Mr Biden telephoned 19 global leaders in six days of his election, and as of Tuesday, had spoken to 17 leaders since taking office on January 20, White House releases compiled by PREMIUM TIMES show. The calls were made to close allies such as the United Kingdom and to those with security concerns such as Iraq and to rivals like Russia.

When Mr Biden delayed contacting America’s closest ally in the Middle East, Israel, the country took notice. Israel’s oldest newspaper, the left wing-leaning Hareetz, warned it was a “wake-up call”, and blamed it on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s closeness to Mr Trump, and the alienation of the now ruling Democratic Party.

“The White House said Biden would be calling Netanyahu soon. But even after that happens, Israel will need a lot of time to repair the damage he did to the ties with the Democratic Party,” the paper said in a February 15 editorial.

Mr Biden’s office said it was not a deliberate snub, and Mr Netanyahu argued the U.S. president had not called other Middle East leaders. The two leaders eventually spoke on February 17.

‘Unstable and Insecure’
Like Europe and the Middle East where American engagements have almost always followed a pattern – UK or France or Germany, and Israel first – U.S. leaders have for decades contacted mostly the same select group of few African countries.

Their phone calls or visits have been mostly to Egypt and South Africa. Nigeria, which has received three American presidents (Egypt has received the most – 16), has seen a decline with no American president visiting in 18 years.

President Biden has promised increased engagement with Africa after the halfheartedness of the Trump years. His administration’s early choice is seen by some as reflective of Nigeria’s declining global standing. They worry it may shape future relations with other nations, although others say it is the leadership, not Nigeria, that is on trial.

“If you have a leadership that is not dynamic, that is not global in outlook you will not call such a leader,” said Sheriff Folarin, professor of International Relations at Covenant University. “If I were in President Biden’s shoes, I will not call the president of Nigeria. I won’t call him.”

He said that does not mean “I would not have something to do with Nigeria because Nigeria’s place in Africa can never be under-emphasised.”

In addition to losing its position as a major exporter of crude oil to the U.S., Nigeria has stacked insecurity baggage that afflicts everything from food to foreign investment. The Buhari administration has done little to show leadership, analysts say.

“In the last few years, it’s obvious to us Nigerians that we have been punching below our weight internationally. We cannot secure our own territory not to talk of being able to secure our region,” Professor Osuntokun said.

“With the instability we have in the country, with the insecurity and the unfortunate appearance of our government not willing to do anything about it, many governments outside Nigeria are worried about the future of our country.”

While that happens, relatively smaller African nations appear to be seizing the moment to resolve basic needs like power and critical infrastructure. And they are getting the attention.

Besides President Tshisekedi being the current chairman of the African Union, the DRC remains critical to the U.S. economic interest with its vast mineral resources essential for America’s tech industry. The country attracted more foreign direct investment than Nigeria between 2017 and 2019, retaining a place in the top five destinations in the continent, according to United Nations data.

In her call to Mr Tshikekedi, U.S. Vice President Harris spoke about the two countries exploring “economic opportunity” in their two nations.

In his call to Mr Kenyatta, Mr Biden applauded Kenya’s leadership in the Horn of Africa and emphasised the U.S. commitment to working closely with the country to support regional peace and security. The two leaders also discussed the deteriorating humanitarian and human rights crises in Ethiopia’s Tigray region.

Mr Osuntokun hopes Nigerian leaders will read the signs and change the direction of the country.

“Some of us are worried about what is going on. The total breakdown of law and order. We can’t travel, even within the country, people are afraid to drive on the highways. And all these things will be communicated to the home governments not only to America but to all the governments that have diplomatic representation here,” he said.

“So it’s an indication to us that if we want to be taken seriously, we have to make sure that our home is secure and stable.”

Mr Sheriff said he was hopeful the country will receive the required attention in future.

“There are many issues Nigeria is contending with at the moment, and you can’t just call Nigeria now and say you want to talk about Africa. Nigeria is distracted right now because of its own internal problems,” he said.

How will you describe the relationship between your people and the people of Igangan?

There was a cordial relationship between us; we were living in harmony. I don’t know what caused the present strain in our relationship; it is not clear to me. But what I noticed is that the Ibarapa people suddenly didn’t want to see Fulani people around again. There was no quarrel between us; but I observed recently allegations that Fulani people were behind the kidnapping of the people in the area, which is a lie. From my findings, the people in Igangan were behind most of the kidnapping in the area. The indigenes were responsible for the kidnapping of the people and it came to a point that some of the victims were escaping from them. They then resorted to keeping the victims in their homes while negotiating for ransom with victims’ relations. I then made efforts to report them to the police both in Ibarapa and at the police headquarters in Ibadan.

There was one incident in which a Fulani man was abducted. We arranged for several vigilantes who discovered the house where the man was kept. Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the crime through police investigation. Out of the eight suspects, six are still in the police custody. One of them escaped but was rearrested. He is still with the police; he has not been taken to court. Four of those arrested are detained at Agodi Prison as I speak with you.

One of the allegations against you was that you were kingpin to Fulani kidnappers in Ibarapa and you shielded them . What is your reaction to this ?

This allegation is false . Whoever said so should come out and say it to my face. The person should name the people that I negotiated with kidnappers to release . I will be happy to see such a person who can come out and present a proof that I served as a negotiator and collected ransom for the kidnapers .
There is nothing like that . I have been the person reporting cases of kidnapping of both Yoruba and Fulani victims in the area. The records are there with the police both in Eruwa and Ibadan . People should take the pain to find out . How can I be a godfather to the kidnappers ?
Majority of kidnapped victims in Ibarapa were Fulani people and if I count them, they are up to 24 . Among them were those killed after the kidnappers collected ransom. On the other hand, the number of Yoruba that were kidnapped in Igangan cannot even be up to four.

You mean the Yoruba indigenes were kidnapping Fulani herdsmen?

Yes , it was collaboration between Fulani and the Yoruba people in the area .

Was the traditional ruler in Igangan aware of these Kidnappings ?

I reported all these cases to him . Any time I heard of any incident , I made a report to him .

Did you ever meet with Sunday Igboho before he came to Igangan?

No , I didn ’ t know him but Jambele invited Sunday Igboho to Igangan . Jambele is one of the kidnappers .

Is it true that three of your boys fired gunshots while you were having a discussion with Sunday Igboho ?

That didn ’ t happen; if we had a gun that day , we would have fought back . In my house no one can shoot. My kids are educated; I have one abroad , six are university graduates . The least educated is a secondary school graduate.
But there was a claim that one of your boys fired a gunshot and you said it was a mistake .
Nothing of such happened . As I said earlier , we do not have a gun ; we don ’ t know how to use it.
Is it true that some Fulani set a cocoa farm owned by a Yoruba farmer on fire in Igangan?
There is no cocoa farm in Igangan . I have never seen a large cocoa farm since I settled in Igangan .

Did you make any effort to inform the Oyo State Government about the quit notice issued to you by Sunday Igboho ?

I did my best . Immediately the incident happened , I went to the Deputy Governor , who , I believe , is a brother to Sunday Igboho, because they are from the same community. The Deputy Governor assured me that nothing would happen to me. I also went to the Commissioner of Police who assigned policemen to guard me. But few days to the expiration of the ultimatum by Sunday Igboho, I noticed that the policemen disappeared . A day to Sunday Igboho ’ s arrival , the Area Commander invited me and told me to settle the matter with Sunday Igboho amicably. But about five hours to the arrival of Sunday Igboho and the Area Commander , the Area Commander called me and told me to come and meet them. Then a soldier informed me of the ambush that Sunday Igboho had planned for me. Before I knew it, people bombarded my house with weapons and they burnt my house and killed six people. I also lost my only brother during the attack . We were only two from my mother . My brother was killed in the attack and up till now we cannot go to the place to bury him .

Can you quantify what you lost during the attack ?
We lost seven people , including my only brother; I lost 207 cows , apart from other animals. Most of my sheep , goats , turkey and chicken were gone . I am a good turkey breeder in my farm . They burnt all my houses and nine posh vehicles , including a Toyota Venza , Lexus SUV, Toyota Camry and a pick - up truck , as well as other vehicles belonging to other people in my household .

Since you vacated Igangan and came to the northern part of the country , what has been your experience ?

All I can is that I am still alive and I eat , even though I ’ m heartbroken and depressed. The food we eat and the clothes that my wives and I wear were given to us by the people around us here .

Has the Oyo State Government got in touch with you since you left the state?

No . I haven ’ t heard from the government yet . The police came here from Ibadan and took my statement and that ’ s all. I want the Federal Government to investigate the matter . What is my offence ? I want the government to help me .
Are you the only Fulani family that left Igangan?
Only few Fulani are left in Oyo State . The few ones left are still packing ( to leave ) and I was told they are being sent back by Amotekun. So , I will say all the Fulani have been told to leave . The people (Amotekun) once visited us , killed my neighbour and two of his kids .

What do you know about Dr Fatai Aborode ’ s death ?
I know nothing about it. I was very close to Aborode ’ s father and I once lived in their house , Ile Alagbede. In fact , we have become one family . Where Aborode was killed was very far from my village . It’ s about two hours ’ drive to my village; you will pass through Igangan town before you get to where I am . It is the opposite end of where I live .

It was said that some Fulani cows destroyed Aborode ’s farm and he came to complain to you and after that some Fulani people waylaid him and hacked him to death .
Whoever said such happened should come out and say it to my face. Aborode never came to me to complain . All I heard was that he was ambushed and killed by some unknown people . Even though he pleaded and offered money so his life could be spared , his killers refused. Meanwhile , the person who carried him on a motorcycle was not injured . I also learnt that some people, including some Fulani people who were passing by at the time , were made to lie down by the assailants .

Do you think his killing was political ?
Well , I can ’ t answer that .
Do you wish to go back to Igangan if this problem is settled ?

If the government can assure me of my safety , I would love to go back .
What do you think can be done to stop Fulani ’s cows from eating up farmers’ crops?
Cows must eat grass ; that ’ s certain . But the public notion towards Fulani as kidnappers is wrong and I would never agree or succumb to that because it is false allegation against all of us , Fulani .

You said that cows must feed on grass, is that a justification for them to eat up farmers’ crops?
No , but there is no way that farmers and herdsmen would not cross each other . For instance , a driver would not pray for an accident but it is certain it would eventually happen. It is the same for cow and open grazing. It happens and it’ s sort of a mistake .

Farmers say Fulani don ’ t compensate them when cows eat their crop. Is it true ?

Anyone whose cows eat farm crops and does not compensate the owner of the farm is senseless. If it’ s a deliberate act , it is wrong . Let ’ s look at it , how many farms can cows eat from that would feed or satisfy them? Cows are never satisfied , it’ s not possible . However , I have assisted many farmers to get compensation for the destruction of their farms by cows . There was no case of farm destruction reported to me that I didn ’ t send people to go and investigate the destruction of the farms and whenever we established that it was true, I would order the Fulani to pay money to the farmer . An example was the case of the Agoro family in Igangan and many more. I have a record for the issues affecting the farmers .

What do you wish the government should do to Sunday Igboho ?
I want the government to investigate this matter and tell us what our offence is. As regards Sunday Igboho , I believe whoever kills should be punished under the law .

APC: We Are Going To Win Anambra Election With Seen And Unseen Forces,PDP Reacts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Friday, frowned at the statements credited to the Minister of Labour and Employment Senator Chris Ngige and the governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma concerning the November 6 governorship election in Anambra State, telling them that their hope to deploy ‘seen and unseen forces’ to take over the state would never work.

The Minister and the governor had at separate occasions vowed that their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), would win the election using such forces.
But the state chairman of PDP, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, who spoke when a governorship aspirant of the party, Dr. Winston Udeh donated 21 Sienna cars to the party, said whatever undemocratic plot they had would never see the light of day as the people of the state would choose their next governor by themselves.

Nwobu said: “We are not under a military regime and so I don’t know what they mean by deploying seen and unseen forces to take over our state. If the Imo State governor is expecting a replication of his Supreme Court judgment, he should be told point-blank that that is not possible in Anambra.”
Handing the vehicles to the leadership of the party, Udeh, said he decided to donate them to reduce the mobility challenges the party officials were encountering in the course of performing their duties, especially at this period of mobilizing people for the forthcoming governorship poll.

He added: “Wherever you go, they will ask you for transport fare. And I kept wondering if PDP did not have vehicles for its daily operations, especially in the local government areas.
“I, therefore, decided that it will be good to provide cars for all the 21 LGAs in the state to make sure that PDP accomplishes its goals.”
He expressed confidence that he would secure the party’s ticket and eventually win the election and added that he would continue to support the party even if he eventually didn’t get the ticket.
