Business / Challenges Of A Nigerian Freelancer by Cutezt(m): 1:15pm On May 12, 2021
It is hard enough to be a Nigerian, not just in Nigeria, but everywhere around the world. Nigerians are beautiful people, but the situation around the country makes people do even the ugliest of things to survive, and the government is doing little or nothing to remedy that situation, it keeps going from frying pan to fire every day.

There are thousands of Legit, Hardworking Nigerians doing very well out there in the world, and the freelancing world is no exception, having been a freelancer myself, I have met countless freelancers doing exceptionally well in their fields, and have managed to build a reputation for themselves, but most times, the Nigerian Environment does not make it easy at all even while working from home, or a little office somewhere, I am facing one of those difficult times presently and I just wish to share and also get inputs from Nairalanders.

So I am a freelancer who runs a remote agency with a few workers working around the globe, I usually use Fiver to pay my staff as I consider it easy and less expensive than many other gateways. Now it is no news how difficult it is carrying out international transactions as a Nigerian, Paypal decided to let us pay alone and stop us from receiving, banks frustrating us with stupid policies, and the CBN not helping matters too, popping out almost incomprehensible rules to further frustrate us.

So during the lockdown, I lost my Wema card which has always been my go-to card for my transactions to pay my staffs as it is linked to my PayPal, and I have not had any challenges with it until it got missing during the lockdown, it was not a problem for me at first cos I thought it was a digital bank and I could easily request for another card and it will be delivered in a few days, but to m shock, after 4 months of requesting a new card from Wema, being debited, and becoming a top fan on their Facebook page due to various complaints and messages about my requested card, nothing came up, I got frustrated and decided to open an account with another bank, tho I had an access account, but for some reasons, that moment, I was not able to make international transactions with my card, so I made a simple research of what banks is best in online transactions, Zenith, Gt and Access were the most recommended, so I decided to open an account with one of them after the lockdown was lifted. A drive around the bank branches around me was an awful sight, with at least 80 people standing on the cues of each and every one of the 3 banks, I could just not spend the day on that cue, it was impossible, I had a lot of work to do, so i decided to come very early in the morning, by 6 am, I arrived at Access bank and there were around 15 people already on cue, the same was for zenith and even GT, i decided i was just going to use virtual cards even tho their rates were high most times, but it was better than waiting. So as i was driving back, i saw a Sterling Branch with few customers at the gate, and i was excited, at least, i should be able to finish up in 2 hours or so, i gladly went in, gave them all my documents, and opened an account with them, and they asked me to come in 24 hours for my card, i was happy, little did i know that that was the beginning of my frustration.

So i went back gladly 48 hours later to request for a card, only for the sterling branch to tell me that they only had a verve card, which will never work once you cross seme border, and for someone doing international transactions, it was as good as not having any. I got so annoyed cos i told the woman opening the account that i needed either a Master or Visa card and she said they have it, so i don't understand what is going on now, by then, had already spent around 4 hours in the bank waiting for my turn, only to be given that devastating news, i created a scene in the banking hall that day, until one of the workers decided to call another branch which was about an hour drive away to ask if they had Master Card, and they said they did, so she asked me to go there, but it was already very late as banks closed by 2 at that time, but i just needed to get the card as i can't afford to waste another day outside looking for a card again, so i drove like a mad man and got there right on time before they closed, in fact, they closed the hall after my entrance. Finally! i thought, so i waited a bit for it to get to my turn to see the customer service, but that was a problem on its own as I was basically interrogated just for a Master Card, they were asking me questions like 'where do i live?' even after i clearly had my utility bill with my address, they also asked questions like 'what am i using a master card for?' 'Where is the closest bus stop to my house?' 'What is the most popular location that was closest to my house?' 'What is the color of the paint of my house?' 'Is there a tree in my house or not?' and finally 'i needed to show my international passport' before i could be given a card, i kid you not, every one of these questions was asked, and thankfully, i had my international passport with me, so they printed it, and all, before finally giving me an 'Alternative Finance' master card. I was shocked i needed to be interrogated like a thief for a mere ATM card but was glad i finally got it, i went home, linked it to my Paypal account, and tried to verify my account with the 4 digit code that PayPal sends in the debit alert, but the first shock i got was that i never received any debit alert of the 1.95 USD i was debited for, but from my Alt App, i was debited, and it was nowhere to be found in my transaction history or statement, i called sterling bank many times but they kept saying they could not give me the code as they can't find any code with them too, and an OPT was personal, can you imagine? I called about 6 times while requesting for the code 2 more times but they all refused to give me the code, i got frustrated and left them alone, this is a code that Access and Wema give you in less than 30 secs of calling.

Another thing about the Alt App was that transactions were not updated in the Transactions history Dashboard, as we speak, the last transaction on my dashboard was in December 2020, meanwhile, i have used it for countless transactions this year, what a pathetic app.

The one that shocked me the most was when i was using the card to pay for something online, and instead of me being debited, i get credited with the amount, at some point, i had almost 700k showing in my app dashboard, meanwhile, in reality, i only had around 7k in that account, the funny part was that once the original money you have is finished, no transaction will go through again even though you are seeing Hundreds of thousands in your app dashboard as your balance, but when you call the customer care, they will give you the exact amount you have in your account, what a useless bank.

After about 6 months, Wema bank, whom i had abandoned for their inability to deliver my card, called me to apologize and deliver the card to me, but by then, i had already sorted out my access account and it was top of my transaction cards, but then, due to the stupid $100 per month law by CBN, i needed every card i could get to keep up, so i took it.

Now to my latest challenge, Sometimes, access bank's card fails when i want to carry out a transaction, so i use Sterling when it does, i made a transaction of about $35 dollars altogether to pay for a service on fiver via Paypal on the 19th and 20th of April, it was successful and i was happy with the service provided, so just yesterday, I received 2 emails from PayPal and Fiver each saying that i filed a dispute with my bank regarding those transactions, and i was banned from accessing both Fiver and Paypal, i was mad, i mean, i never did anything like that, what exactly is going on? I contacted fiver and they said i should contact PayPal, which i did, and they further said i should contact my bank, in this case, the transaction was carried out on my sterling card, after contacting sterling, they denied ever making such a claim to Paypal, Paypal are on the other hand saying Sterling filed a dispute on my behalf and the funds have been sent to them and the only way my account can be reactivated is if that is sorted out and the funds are sent back to the rightful owners. Now, i am at the middle of something I know nothing about, and for such a little transaction, i don't even know what to do, creating a new PayPal and fiver account or what? cos i don't know who is lying here. Apart from the lack of electricity, the high cost of internet data, and the high price of fuel, the banking sector is one sector that frustrates the hell out of Nigerians.

Have you had any problems like these before? please share your thought/Challenges working from home.

What kind of gallon is that? 10 or 15l? cos the amount you stated can only get 18l at 165, 18l can not fill up a 20l keg till the point of bending, if it is a 15l keg, then you have been cheated too, so i dont know what you mean.

Crime / Fueling Stations With Tweaked/bad Pumps by Cutezt(m): 4:26pm On May 07, 2021
So I went to buy fuel just a few hours ago and I ended up having problems with the fuel attendants.

I usually buy fuel to power my gen as the power lately has been next to nothing around my area, and since I work from home, my gen runs for almost all day, meaning I must not run out of fuel. So I usually buy fuel at 3 refueling stations, Oando, Enyo, and Davitech, all located around the Lakowe axis of Lagos and so I can give you testimonies of all their dubious nature as a customer who frequents at least twice a week for the last 3 years.

Now back to my story, I frequent Enyo at School gate bus stop more cos it is the one I have studied the most and I know what pump is the best, in fact, they know me very well with that pump, so other attendants don't bother directing me to their pumps once they see me driving in, but today, as I went to refuel, I remembered Pocohantas story which was on the front page this morning and decided to give other pumps a try, but to my shock, nothing has changed. I went with a 25-liter gallon in my boot and bought fuel worth N4500, which was around 27 liters, but to my shock, the supposed 27 liters was not even up to the brim of my 25-liter keg with the pump clearly reading just over 27 liters, i will attach pictures below.

I had to let the attendants know that they are not different from our politicians as they are all criminals, so they should never be seen complaining about the country cos they are part of the problem.

So while returning, i had the idea to create a thread to hold these stations responsible just as how Job Scam locations made frontpage and saved/still saving a lot of people from unnecessary harm and waste of money, we can also do the same for fueling stations. If they know there is a directory that can reveal their dubious nature, they may sit up and stop the stealing and scamming. So I will ask that you drop a filling station you know with tweaked/adjusted pumps and their location, and if possible, the pump number, I will begin.

STATIONS WITH BAD ADJUSTED PUMPS

Enyo Lakowe - Every pump has been tweaked, the manageable one is pump 1.

Oando Lakowe - All pumps have been tweaked, no difference in all.

Davitech Oribanwa - pump 3 and 1 are the best, the rest have been tweaked.

Rain Oil Abijo - Most of the pumps there are good, aside pump 2.

Lalasticlala, if this can make frontpage, I will appreciate it, you work from home too, and you understand the plight of those who work from home as far as power is concerned.

A big thank you to y'all sincere opinions....all is well noted.
Merci.
and thank you Mods for pushing to FP.
i wish there was a reward if your topic hits FP grin

I am from Jos, born and bred, lived most of my life in Jos until 5 years ago when I moved to Lagos for greener pastures, now, I'm doing far better in Lagos, I run my company remotely and still hold a job which does not make up for 20% of my monthly earnings even tho I'm required to be there just 2 times a week.

I was in Jos in December after spending 3 years without going back, and the visit made me realize how much I missed Jos and how life can be easy, it also opened my eyes to see how we suffer unnecessarily in Lagos.

Jos absolutely lacks the hustling spirit that Lagos has and things are very calm and slow there, there are no jobs too, most people survive through handwork, so make sure you hold down that your job tight, and also get madam doing something too.

My friend stays in a nice 1br apartment around Bingham teaching hospital and pays just above a 100k, I stay in the same in Lagos and pay almost x4 of that amount, it's crazy, I am thinking of moving back to Jos too since my job is remote. The only problem is that the cultisim in Jos is now extreme, I grew up in an area called Apata, was born there and all, many of my friends are now big time cult guys, even though I am relatively safe due to old time sake with these guys, but still, you can never tell.

We sat to drink, eat, wine and dine during my last visit with many of them, but like people said already, going somewhere like Rayfield is fine, it is safe, and relatively cheap compared to Abuja, but also, do not move in the night, it is not advisable.

Good luck...

Hello there,

So I just got my first taste of crypto, was gifted 100 dollars worth of ethreum by a friend and I left it for a few days, and to my shock, it appericiated to over 160 dollars in a space of about 5 days, I cashed out on it tho and now I'm having the thoughts of saving in a more stable crypto, maybe bitcoin or even etherum, I save in dollars and even though it is more stable compared to the naira, but the return is actually nothing compared to that of crypto, so is it a good or bad idea?
