You need to let this go. Nobody came for you, how you got that from Vcole's response to you is surprising. And to be honest all this story about not finding job and finding no, and holding on blah blah blah is PLAYED OUT.
Except you're a complete JJC with no access to the Internet and zero acumen for research, how would one expect to land today and become manager of a company? It happens, yes but be realistic and pray.
I have been reading the back and forth about job this job that. And I ask myself what sorta people are these that took time to submit application to become PR of a foreign land? Some of y'alls applications took 9 months before it was approved. Y'all didn't come posting and lamenting quotes from the bible, now na small thing like finding job is what we have spent 20 pages on. Yet y'all lived in Naija alllll this while with no power and fuel scarcity, una no go back and forth with yalls government about that. I believe that positivity gets one far. No need to write a post about it sounding like a pastor to convince people to believe. DO YOU! Everybody's struggle in life is different. Everybody's experience is different. Y'all need to grow up.
If you are on this thread and actually need to read a post about someone's experience with job search and menial job blah blah blah to "connect" to the struggle, then you should have sat back down in Nigeria.

**leaves the room**

That's your opinion and that of your crew. The TRIEC mentorship programme i left just now asked each table to write down what motivates them in their job search and almost every table had sharing experiences as one of their motivating factors. I wont say more than this as i have better things to do than to argue with people who try to shut others down or mock people who share theirs.

This is good to hear. Congratulations. Your steps were indeed ordered by God.
EmmyToluwa:
LONG POST ALERT!!!

Hello all!!! I have been a silent follower of this thread though I have posted a few times in the past. I just felt it is important I share my landing experience so far so that people can learn from our experience. my time line follows:

1. Bought tickets October 3rd (please note not a mistake, na faith and good deal)

2. Got PPR November 8th 2017 (after 8 months of wait)

3. COPR and passport returned November 27th (I had sent out our passport November 13th).

4. Landed in Toronto 17th February with my wife and son via Ethiopian Airlines, and received by my friend who took us to his place in London (we are still in his house at the moment), Ontario. The landing procedure was a bit slow as we landed on a Saturday and the customs officials were not so fast. Because of this we couldn't get our SIN and our PR card was not processed also as we couldn't remember the friend's postal code. The customs officer we met was a nice woman, she even gave us her phone to call my friend who had been waiting outside. They didn't check our bags and she asked us to sign Goods to follow forms as I was sending food over from Naija. To cut long story short, we reached London, ON around 2:16pm as it is a 2hr drive from Toronto.

5. On Sunday 17th February, we followed my friend to his church, a white dominated church, and after the service we were introduced as first-timers, this was where our miracle began. The woman (my angel actually) that attended to us, also an immigrant (from El Salvador) happened to be an HR manager at one of the Top 5 banks in Canada and while we were talking about our induction process in church got to know that we just arrived in Canada the day before asked about our employment status and I told her we will start to look for jobs once we are settled. Well na so she told me her bank would be having a career fair for job seekers and she will want to me to attend. I was like wetin I dey do wey I no go fit go?? I don reach there self!!!

6. Monday 19th was a public holiday (Family day, please note no be only naija we like holiday o....dem get holiday pass us for here sef).

7. Tuesday, 20th February, my friend drove us to Service Canada. We got our SIN and the woman we spoke with gave us the procedure to submit address for PR card. We went from there to Scotia bank to open account and got $3000 in credit card immediately to start credit history.

8. Wednesday 21st, we went to get phones. This we did under my friend's plan as those ppl didn't want to give phone to a newcomer on plan. Well I didn't mind, I sha got iPhone 8 to pay over 24months.

9. Thursday 22nd February, I was home all through applying and reading for my CPA conversion. I had aready started this from Naija. We also got a a very good laptop at a crazy price from Kijiji, for here kijiji and Facebook market place are your friends. I know there are other good ones too! We did not really look for house as my friend said he will introduce us to a friend who is an expert at settling new comers, including house and other things.

10. Friday 23rd, I attended the TD bank Career fair and it was fun, I told my interviewer I willing to start with them but they have to know that I am more qualified than the entry level job they are recruiting for. The woman said she understands, but that if selected, I have to be patient with them because they have a 1-yr period of assessing new intakes before determining if you can move up the ladder. Come and see me as I dey speak phone wey I no say na lie. I come dey dictate when I neva even do test let alone interview. The woman said they will get back if they feel say my skills and experience allign with their available roles.

11. Saturday/Sunday, we were home applying for jobs and adjusting CV. Oh I missed out the part where the my angel said I should send her my CV so that she can fine tune it to the way TD bank likes candidate's CVs to be like. So this was the CV i took to the CF on Friday.

12. Monday, 26th I received an email that I should complete an online assessment which I did like 36 hrs later as I was visiting friends and still dropping CVs to companies and also visited Access Center for bridging programs (another story).

13. Wedneday 28th Febraury, I received a call fro TD bank HR inviting me for an interview on Friday. I called my angel immediately and she immediately sent me their interview format to use, She said I should practice many times infront of a mirror. Well I did.

14. Thursday, we went to check our first house and the agent/lanlord were very willing to give us the apartment because of the friend of my friend. The only issue was that we have to wait one month for the current tenant to vacate and for repair works to be done. For my mind, I was wondering what was there to repair, everything looks good!!!

15. Yesterday, March 2nd, I was at TD bank with 6 other candidates, infact na then I know say naija peeps dey waka. of the 7, 3 of us were Nigerians. The interview was in 4 stages, role play, group assignment, assessment and a one-one interview. At the end, I was drained but yet fulfilled in a way I couldn't explain. The HR lady told us to expect feed backs and possible appointments by next week.

16. This afternoon, my friend and I went to drop another friend who was travelling to the US and on our way back I was telling him our my confidence has dropped since the interview and I was feeling they might be calling to tell me no. See Satan!!!

As we got back home, my phone rang and it was the HR recruiter with her nice voice. She asked me what I tot about the interviews and I how tot I performed. My heart wan cut, i tot this is it, maybe they have rejected me. I told her I learnt alot and also that I am confident my skills and experience are well aligned with the role. And then I heard, WELL I AM HAPPY TO INFORM YOU THAT WE ARE OFFERING YOU A CONDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT!! I shouted!!! The thing just be like say I dey dream. I was like I neva even get house, I don get job. All the things the woman dey talk I no even hear, I was just too happy.

So my peeps, na so our tory be so far so. Na so God show say Na HIM be the REAL GOD oooo. Much as this is an entry level job, I am happy I can quickly have my CV updated with a Canadian Experience.

I pray we all have good stories to tell in this Canadian dream!!!

My dear God bless your hustle.

This was exactly the kind of post i requested for before i was shut down by powers that be (Alagbaras). This type encourages someone who has been there too that he/she is not alone in the struggle. It will end in praise my dear. Everyone has a story. Keep the faith. My story is loading too.

Keep them coming. The testimonies and the struggles so that there is balanced information and people can make informed decisions. Also so that people who have not gotten their testimonies yet will not feel left out.

On the new immigrant struggle;
Before moving I already set my mind on doing survival jobs knowing it was going to take quite a while before getting licensed in my profession. What I was not prepared for was the struggle in getting a menial job, and no! I wasn't doing anything wrong. For a full month I was only able to get 2-days job through an agency ( I registered in ALL i could find), finally what seemed like a breakthrough came during the last week of another month. I was sent to this warehouse for a seasonal job, the work was damn excruciating, but I didn't mind. I found out from another temp who was a regular at the company that the job would last for 6 months, I was happy I found something doing. Just 2 weeks after, the agency left a voicemail they got another job for me, lol! I already knew what that meant. I don't know if it's supposed to be painful, but I was hurt momentarily.
The downside of everything was the website of my profession was updated a week before I landed of which I wasn't aware of, and the new changes makes it almost impossible for foreign trained graduates to practice. I never considered a post graduate program in my field because it was not going to be helpful. I have other options to explore and by God's grace will succeed.

The thing with IT is it's quite very wide and a lot of people do not know where to start from. A lot of people visit Google looking for information about the IT industry and end up being more confused than before. It happened to me.

So, I think the starting point for most people is to look for that point where their current job or something they would like to do in the future intersects with IT. That way, it is easily relatable and narrowed down. For example, someone interested in programming should first ask the language used to write that HR software they use at work; someone interested in the web should ask the languages used to develop websites. Someone interested in networking should ask himself or herself who the leading manufacturers of routers are before taking any classes.

Another misconception a lot of people have is that IT all about programming. This is not true as there are many jobs in the IT industry that do not involve writing a single line of code.

If we can do some time travel back (like 10 years), we would see that IT has evolved the way things are done and when you decide to risk doing it forward, you are not even sure if you will still have your job in the next 10 years. i was shocked when i watched a robot that can open doors on linkedin video. One can't just sit on the fence when it comes to IT. IT has come to disrupt things. Do you know AI experts have joined the league of highest paid people? They are paid to design machines that will replace human beings in the offices and human beings are not bothered.

IT has been opening up job opportunities. With this new GDPR in EURO zone which is taking effect in May 2018. All companies that operate within that zone or handle data of EU citizens must comply or pay fine of 4% of their worldwide revenue or 20million euro whichever is higher. This has just created job for 28,000 Chief Data Officers so you can imagine if one was already available in the market with such skills. Canadian companies operating in the Euro zone would have need to employ CDOs to take care of their data. Even the regulatory body would also need subject matter experts that would test compliance of organisations with the new regulation.

Like you said a lot of them dont require coding or scripting. Some are compliance, risk management or even governance related. Don't be too scared to cross over to IT because it is not rocket science. some will employ you to just be doing research and poll (likes of GARTNER) Just make a decision on which area of IT that interests you and go for it. I read the Bio of a lady that wrote an article in our ISACA journal and found out she is a wounded veteran who could not continue her service and then switched to IT. Now she is an authority in IT security. In the US, they train these veterans free of charge in the area of IT Security and absorb them to work for government. (You know Russians are giving US sleepless nights in the area of hacking) I have also seen a lot of auditors who switch to IT audit and from there to IT security and IT risk.

Good enough in this part of the clime nobody is bothered about your age when it comes to education/personal development. Your starting point could be joining an IT professional body and attending their seminars, webinars, conferences etc. I believe that will grow your knowledge base.

I noticed i have never come accross people sharing their struggles here (except one oluwapelumi84 that her case was not properly handled)and so when my friend (i got to know her from here) called me and narrated her experience, i shared my experience with her too. At some point i was in a worse situation than her (I am not even open to sharing it here again) and this encouraged her. Someone else chatted me that her my story encouraged her ( i didnt get to ask her which of my stories). Beside feeling good with myself for being a source of encouragement, these two instances really got me thinking. i was like probably people here are not open to sharing their hustles meanwhile these hustling stories no matter how minute they are can encourage someone else.

That is why i requested that we be open to sharing our stories here to encourage ourselves. Iron sharpeneth Iron.

I am not also oblivious of the fact that some people got their job even before landing. Infact my sister's colleague got a job with one of the consulting firms while still in Naija. When i asked him how he did it (i hadn't relocated then), he said his selling point was his SAP experience. IT people get job either before relocating or immediately after landing (This is not to make anyone in this category who has not gotten a job yet feel bad, As long as you have done your bit, In His time it will happen just keep on hustling for it).

I think i have done more explaining than it is required for this issue.

You can decide to agree with anyone. It does not take away the fact that we need to encourage ourselves with our stories. That said, i have not also said here that i want to fall off (as in hang in there) or that i am loosing it so please don't make me a victim. I am a victor it is just that my time hasn't come.

It has been a crazy and emotional journey for me so far.

2016- MSc programme at the University of Saskatchewan.
2017- Moved to Ontario (Job opportunities) and the hustle began!
A friend who graduated at the same time as I got a good job and had me wondering if I was not good enough. I literally slept and woke up on my laptop. I lost an opportunity because my work permit was not ready.

After almost three months of editing, structuring, matching and sending out resumes to companies. I recently got an entry-level job in a bank. I believe it is a great way to start my banking career, take the financial exams etc.

Everyone will have different timelines, just stay focused and optimistic.

Shun any negativity thrown your way. For example, a friend of mine was always flaunting his salary in every conversation which sometimes made me feel bad cos I was on $0 (lol).

I have not gotten there yet but I am pushing through. Someone might land today and become the manager of Company Z and while another might struggle for three years.

As long as you work -regardless of the type of job you do- to put food on your table, be thankful.

Currently on the lookout for evening and weekend jobs to do, as exams are expensive and rent is not a joke cheesy grin.

We will all look back and smile. #MayOurHustlePayOff

Please, how do you meet people in new cities as I am currently friendless in Mississauga sad

Please be aware that some fraudsters are sending out text messages and emails to people on anonymous e gift of various amount asking you to click on a link.

I got one on the 13th and clicked on it yesterday the link took me to a cloned interac screen with several banks to choose from. When i clicked on my bank, it took me to a screen where i was to dump my credentials. I noticed that while doing all that the url did not change.(they are not even as smart as Nigerian fraudsters).

I called interac to report and the first message i got was a warning about the incident.

If you receive such please call interac to confirm before they clean up your account. Guys are not smiling.

Please i cant see where i posted here that i need help or advice.

i said here that we need balanced report. and i was going to share one of my experiences to open the ground for balanced report so that people will not feel left behind.

czaratwork:
Hello everyone.

I have noticed that we only share our success stories here and this doesn't give a true picture of situations. We make people yet to move to think that jobs are so waiting for them and those who are here and have not gotten something or managing some small jobs to feel God has forgotten them.

I remember someone shared her struggles and challenges in getting job last year here and we all came for her. Some said there must be something she is not doing right. My humble self though still in naija at that time told her it may be village people after her. This could have stopped others from sharing theirs.

Please let's be open to sharing and encouraging people who have challenges settling in.

What prompted this post is my phone conversation with someone going through her struggles. By the time i shared mine, she was relieved. Someone else chatted me that my story encouraged her.

Mine may not be that i got that big job but that i am able to still hold it together and appreciate God for thus far He has led me.

I will share one experience that i shared with them that lifted them when i come back from chirch. Right now service mode activated. It's also one of those Sundays that we sit down to mingle and chop after service so i came with an empty stomach. There is an adage in my place that says "Open your eyes like fish". My eyes are wide open now. No dulling. shocked shocked

vcole:
@czaratwork, hang in there. It takes a new immigrant on the average 5years to fully settle into Canada according to statistics. So it's easier said than done but you would be past this stage sooner than you think.

In my opinion, it is important to properly research job prospects in your intended field as well as jobs you may be able to get on arrival even if it is in a lower role or a "survival job" that you feel you would be comfortable doing to earn an income prior to arriving in Canada. It keeps you realistic and focussed by the time you get here.

For regulated professions, it is a realistic plan to be willing to settle for any job on arrival if you need an income quickly and then map out a route to obtaining your license if you so desire or map out a route towards an alternative career.

In my case, I already decided to go back to school prior to arrival to earn a qualification or two in an area that I have an interest in for the long term as well as one that would make me more employable. Obtaining my license is a long windy road that I would fit into the pipeline at some point along the way as it is not a top priority for me. I did job hunt for a few months and got a job working with special needs kids at a job fair but passed up on it for a govt sponsored employability skills training program. Most jobs readily accessible to foreign professionals with a health care background are nursing aides, dietary aides, care aides, community support workers, etc. I do not think I am well suited to those roles and did not want to get stuck in a job I didn't like for a while and so I enrolled in school and started this winter when my baby turned 6 months. So far, so good.

So if a survival job isn't something you feel you can handle, getting an additional qualification may be a good plan. Save up some funds for that purpose if you can. You could also consider applying for student loans from the government.

I find that Indian immigrants are a lot more realistic in their expectations as regards migration. They hit the ground ready to go and are willing to work at any job, get into school and work hard. It won't hurt for us to take a page outta their book.

For every success story of someone getting a job in their field soon after landing, there are several others slugging it out at Tim Hortons or Walmart. In the end, it will still turn out as a success story for both parties, just different timelines.

I think you people read posts here with preconcieved idea. i am going to repost my initial post here for emphasis. i just felt within me after i spoke with one of us who was not having it good with her job hunt but got relieved when i shared mine with her and another that chatted me that my story encouraged her that people dont get balanced report here and so when it is not happening for them, they feel left out. I network a lot. i attend ACCA, ORACLE and presently mentorship programmes and have been sharing my experiences here.

In one of the ACCA networking programme i attended, the members shared their experiences and from what i got, i am still on track. i met a Nigerian lady at the oracle event i attended last month and we talked about my job hunt and she was like that she is impressed that i came for the programme.

The embolded too got me. i have also shared here how someone here helped me get my first job in December so what is it about feeling that survival job is not good for me. I also shared how i met someone at Meadowvale town centre who confirmed what God said concerning me.

I am tired of this distorted response and my mail being bombarded with solutions to my preconcieved job hunt problems.

Until you people make this place conducive for sharing balanced report. People will read what we have here and think that jobs in Canada are just for asking. I am already being made to look like a victim when i know i am a victor.

@All, it's not about me. It's about sharing our experiences, good and bad ones. Its about being real.

People are out there reading this thread and forming their opinion about settling down based on what they read here. The problem is that they never get to read the negative side because people are afraid to share it so they are not percieved as negative nancy if i may borrow the words from honey86.

When reports are balanced, it gives room for better preparation for those coming in and a sense of i am not alone in this struggle for those already landed.

What prompted me to raise this like i earlier mentioned was a phone conversation i had with one of us and a chat i also had with one of us.

When i got my visa, i quickly chatted a friend who has been here for 10 years. Her advice was that i should come in in April after the winter when business would have picked up but i would hear none of that. I came mentally prepared so nothing really moves me.

If i share my experience and you see there that i cried, it's nothing serious. It's just me. I am a very emotional person. Even in church when worshipping God, i cry.

This is the difference between the ''living in Canada thread'' and the ''living in Australia thread''. The Australia thread is balanced.
I am all for sharing both side of the story. Like I have previously mentioned earlier on this thread, it can be difficult to get a ''good'' job in Canada due to its small economy, heavily regulated industries, downturn, nepotism and widespread cities. It takes a lot of work, luck, dedication and God's grace. Some are very lucky while others are not so lucky at the start. Everyone's case is different. There is really no manual for success in Canada. One has to know what works for them. I worked survival jobs for 3 years myself. Some think I have seen it all as far as Canada is concerned, but I am still learning myself..

1 million like for this. You know someone who has only spent 6 months here and is already wondering what she is doing stucked up with 1 survival job or the other will be encouraged that her wonderful break can still happen.

I don't know how we can lie to ourselves even in another man's country. I think the problem is because there is no dignity in labour where we are coming from. Everyone wants to share her story when she has landed the big job and will make sure no mention is made of the survival job.

Okay now make we dey deceive ourselves with one equation to success wey no exist while people are feeling left behind doing survival jobs or not even getting one now because of the weather.

Lemme come and be going jare.

Looking forward to this

I don't want to birth a controversial issue now.

I have a meeting with my mentor next tomorrow and have some assignments before that meeting. I dont want to use that energy on rules and regulations of success or any john maxwell or brian tracy books.

@seniors.

If one has to attend school or go for a course, is it possible to get a bank loan for that? And at what interest rate would that be?

Yes there is one OSAP loan for people in Ontario. Dont have the details though. You can google it.

People don't want to hear the truth. You try to share reality and they call you negative Nancy. I dont have power to exchange words, so I park for one side.
Another thing is this, depending on your career and experience, you may have to go back to school.

My dear i tire. I discussed that school option with my friend and she is considering it. There were some other options i suggested which she had also considered.

In fullness of time we will all share our testimonies.

Preparation & Opportunity

People by now are familiar with the two words above as the ingredients for success. These words are repeated by life coaches, mentors, motivators and the likes with such frequency that they are cliché at this point. Nonetheless these words still ring true as markers of success.
The quest for employment, on the average, is largely dependent on one’s level of preparation and exposure to opportunity.

Job seekers can make the necessary preparation to enter the Canadian workforce by ensuring that their resumes and work profiles are effective enough to convince recruiters and employers in the now fabled 6 seconds window that they are the best fit for the job.
(BTW here’s an article that I think many may find useful on how to write effective resumes https://medium.freecodecamp.org/how-to-write-a-really-great-resume-that-actually-gets-you-hired-e18533cd8d17 )

Some of these things have been discussed in earlier pages of this thread but here's a recap:

• Armed with a good resume you should apply to at least 10 jobs every day. You don’t want to send in the same resume to every application. Working off your template you should tailor your resume to the specific job role bearing in mind to include key words and all the other job application tips you have learnt.
• Seek and join network groups in the field you desire to work in. Consider taking on intern roles or positions that are ancillary or related to your desired job as these might be stepping stones to land the desired job.
• Maintain high visibility on job sites such as LinkedIn, Indeed, Monster etc.
• Brace yourself for rejections. Even with a stellar resume you may still get rejections, they will come for a variety of reasons but that shouldn’t deter you. Where possible, like after an unsuccessful interview, ask for feedback so you can course correct and improve for next time.

Do not be deterred. Be of a positive disposition always!

I have experienced everything I have written here and long since landed a job in my field. I am confident that the points above work, me and virtually all the people in my circle of friends can attest to them. As daunting or unexciting as this may sound I built a weekly routine that allowed me to apply for jobs, attend network meetings, study (had to keep my skills sharp), do a part time job then and also explore this beautiful country (always try to build fun into my schedules). My thinking then (and now) was that I must be doing something tangible today that I will benefit from tomorrow. No time to waste! lol

You are in this life to experience and grow. Take on the experiences of this stage of your immigration journey with an achievers mindset and continue to apply yourself; eventually you'll get to the goal you desire and you’ll be a better person for it all.

This is the kind of posts that scare people away. Life does not wear straight jacket. Life happens.

Please give room for people that aint there yet not because they didn't prepare or they didn't have opportunities but because it is not yet their time. When i wanted to post it, i asked myself "Are you sure you are ready to handle all those that have the formula to success here"? But then i responded by telling myself that this post is not for them. So if you think you have used the formulars of those 7 habits book please stay off my post. Please waka pass. I am reaching out to those hurting. I am so stirred up in my spirit. Dem do us?

Can you imagine that one person chatted me that she has been down recently until she read my testimony and you are here reeling out formulas for success!

I knew people like you will come out with the same epistle we have read here.

I beg us as much as we share our successes, let's also share the dissapointments. It doesn't mean you are negative. It only means you are letting others know their attempts can flip either way. And getting the person encouraged to move on to better things.

If you have followed my story you will know that my testimony is confirmed back home and even here in Canada but waiting for its manifestation. So nothing i see in my job hunt discourages me but i need to share experiences so that people (Most don't even post here, they just read) don't feel it's happening to only them.

We need to be more humane. That said. In a shortwhile i will share one of my experience.

So nice to hear you had a pleasant experience with TRIEC, to think that I happen to be a registered mentor with both TRIEC and ACCES. It's my little way of helping others climb up the ladder. Though I'm not able to select the mentees assigned to me from the pool but I remain open to sharing the info I have concerning entry-way into banking especially for those who have Audit, Internal Control and Investigation background. The mentoring support I received while I was a mentee validated the networking strategy I had started on before I left Nigeria and helped to guide my job hunting efforts. Networking and mentorship opens doors here if applied appropriately.

It is still ongoing. My mentor is a full blown Canadian who told me frankly that he may not inderstand what immigrants go through to get integrated into the system but he will link me up with naija immigrants who will share their stories. Infact he introduced me to a naija colleague of his whom will have a 30 minutes talking session with me just to share his experiences in our next meeting.

It is really an interesting experience. I could feel the excitement the mentors on my table had during our introductory meeting.(First time mentors though).
