4712A6: Which province did this happen? This is so wrong. It is always announced before the go train stops at union station that it is a criminal offence and offenders will be prosecuted. It's better to put a call to them that you will be late due to some unforseen circumstances than to cross the railway track. It is best to leave earlier and sometimes you are the one to schedule your interview time so why not choose the time that you are sure to make it. Meanwhile if it is Union, where are you crossing to when you are supposed to go underground to burst into the town. This is real JJC in action. So sorry for your loss. We learn from such experiences. 2 Likes |

For those in Branch Banking Operations and even branch Internal Control, Do you know that experience can fetch you Anti Money Laundering Analyst role here in Canada? Check the JD of AML analyst online and look out for the transferable skills you have as customers service officer and operations manager and tailor your resume to those skills. You may need a little brushing up like reading and taking the ACAMS exams (Anti money laundering certification exams)to prepare for the market. If you don't want to take the exams, you can read the materials to prepare yourself and defend your resume. Back home most of us have our STR software that is integrated into our core banking application to pull out information for transactions above threshold but here you do the investigation and write a report which the manager would approve before filing the STR. You just need a little brushing up before launching yourself into that area. It has so many roles like analyst, investigator, quality assurance etc. People with operations and internal control/compliance experience back home just brush themselves up and launch into the market here. You know in Nigeria, one person is made to do 10 peoples work but not so here. Roles are seperated here. While thinking of what to do here also give it a thought. 35 Likes 6 Shares |

salford1: Then in school, because the curriculum would only allow them teach you COBOL, BASIC, FORTRAN IV AND FORTRAN 77, you would have to find a way to learn the modern languages. We (my class) had to pay a lecturer to take us on C++. We ended up borrowing courses from other departments because they didn't have core computer courses to teach us. I think it is better now. |

[quote author=simiolu1 post=678356 czaratwork one thing developers know is that there is no single source of truth for learning. Over time, we usually know where to go for the best in a particular topic. Lynda, Treehouse, Udemy etc are great places to learn Php! But to learn Laravel (a Php framework) and generally be a better Php developer (mastering text editors, IDEs, asking questions and getting replies), everyone knows that laracasts.com is the place to go. There is a free plan but its subscription is $15/month. Even though Jefferey Way (the owner of Laracasts) is an extremely good teacher, if you ever want to set up authentication for multiple users in a Laravel project (say your project is going to have users, admins, super admins etc like Nairaland), the multi-auth tutorial by devmarketer on youtube is what you should be watching. We know these things because subconsciously, we have learnt how to learn. This in itself is a skill everyone should master. So as a person, do you learn well with videos? What kind of videos keep you engaged? Or do you learn best with books? These are questions you need to answer And that is how I ended up typing an epistle [/quote] Simiolu 1: My dear, programming is not fun for me no matter where i go to learn it. I just dont have interest in programming. I can do with scripting, structured query language but not to sit down and write a program to solve a problem. Learning the syntax and semantics of those languages, having to develope the algorithm and all that is not just my calling. Probably if i had gone into IT after i left school, i may have developed interest. Then for my best learning method, anyone that can impact on me is good. I remember using videos to learn some ACCA courses but now it's difficult for me to sit down behind the screen and learn. Even to learn advanced excel online is a problem. I had to sign up with a church member who volunteered to teach me alongside his students. I have not been able to study the one he drops on my webex account. I think because a lot is going on around me, i loose concentration easily. Lets see how it goes because i am beginning to deal with those issues. My IT SECURITY dream must not die. 3 Likes |

Thanks tollu, vascey and randomsue. I am great. Just trying to keep a very low profile. You know that moment that you are in a meeting and you are told to reach out to your network and tell them about your group. That was the situation this morning. I am new to the group and the least amongst them in all respect. I have seen a lot the group has to offer. Opportunities to meet leaders in the industry. Our founder delivered the keynote address at the last CPA event and has been volunteering for so many events. You don't have to be a chartered accountant to be part of the group. If you have built your career in the financial sector, you are also good to go. Our meetings are once in 2 months. 8 Likes |

I dont know much about settling in Manitoba because i have never really asked about the province. Any reason you want to be in Manitoba? Because your skill that i see very lucrative in Ontario is IT CONTROL. I know banks are interested in that kind of role(IT AUDIT and IT CONTROL) and most banks are headquartered in Toronto. Also most banking roles are found in Ontario. You have some (mainly branch roles) in other provinces too. If you want to pursue the accounting profession, you can easily do that in any province. even though i would still say there are more accounting roles in Ontario.(my opinion) If it is accounting roles you need you can start sending out your resumes to recruitment agencies like Robert half, international financial group, kelly services, etc. then you can also google indeed, glassdoor, eluta, workopolis, hays, AltisHR, the few i remember now but remember to tailor your resume to the job description on each advertised role so that your resume can pass the scanning stage.(This is not to claim a role you cant defend when shortlisted) Also accountant roles come with skills in some accounting packages like JDedwards, quickbooks, sage, advanced excel (vlookup, pivot table, macros) and even SAP.(FICO). I would suggest you train on these skills back home because when you convert the cost to get trained here to our naira, you would have preferred to have done it back home. You can also google for some of these training online, some are free online even on youtube. Then which certification do you have? if it is ACCA, you can start the process of conversion immediately. I dont know the process for ACA, you may have to ask others. I will send an accountant's resume to you as requested. You can also google it online so that you have so many to work with. Best of luck in your job hunt. I know others here too especially those in Manitoba can also guide you with their contributions. hayor2014: 19 Likes 8 Shares |

no worries dear. i have also seen them try to stop someone who made a suggestion on sending his passport from middle east for stamping and was not happy and i decided once and for all to tell them that this is a free thread where you respond to issues relevant to you and ignore the ones you dont like. i personally decided to do that yesterday and wont go back to doing it. worse case i mind other things. (leave the thread) its just apalling that we cant tolerate ourselves. Take care tollu: 6 Likes 2 Shares |

It will be wrong for people to come here and say someone has not made preparations before landing just because the person is not lucky to have gotten a job before or immediately after landing. I am not supposed to go into the details of my preparations but if that will make some people feel better, I need to state it here that immediately i got my PR back home, i started the process of CPA conversion with the mindset that i will go into accounting career having gained that experience in my banking career. i spoke with some people who gave me leads to companies that hire accountants and i started applying right from home. I am sure the same applies to everyone who had plans of relocating because some of us were communicating ourselves on CPA conversion. I am just apalled by the way we draw conclusions for others. If it doesnt bother you about peoples struggles, give them the benefit of doubt that they have done their ground work well before moving. I see a lot of people here asking questions as soon as they get their PR and believe they are also preparing for their relocation. You can believe whatever you want to believe if that makes you better. Like i said i was prepared for this. 13 Likes |

@vcole you remember i told you i have not shared anything to suggest your hang in there sentence. I told you i only recommended that we share not only the good experiences but also the bad ones. I also told you i encouraged someone on the phone with my experience. I am really tired of going back and forth on this issue. You made your mistake by your words then and so i should not encourage someone because i corrected you? This is the same reason why i almost did not make that suggestion knowing what befell the person that shared his/her experience on page 36 of this thread and how people came for him/her. But i said it is better i post it and face the consequences than i ignore it just to please the ancestors. Trust me I can handle whatever hate speech that would come from it. Whether it is needing a refresher course or being Paranoid or the next ones to come, I counted my cost before making that post. I am a very open person. I can share to the minutest details what i think will benefit someone else but when some people want to claim ancestors and control your postings, the essence of the thread is lost. vcole: 9 Likes |

If you dont care about peoples struggles then jump and pass. I care so much and that is why i try as much as i can to contribute my little quota. Not being boastful about it, i know a number of people i helped with the CPA conversion process. You have no right to shut anybody down here. If a post here that has to do with the subject matter does not appeal to you, the best you can do is to jump and pass it and not to be throwing stones or shutting people down. If i remember clearly the person that opened this thread gave his reasons for opening it. If his reasons for opening it do not appeal to you, i suggest you open yours. Canadianfly: 7 Likes |

For emphasis purposes. I had shared the reason why i suggested that we should also share the challenges we face in our job hunt to encourage ourselves and I know the backleash i got for that singular act. This same reason was given in our group mentorship programme today. If you could refresh your memory by going back to my testimony, i think it will only be fair that you also refresh your memory on the post i put up on sharing the good and bad sides of our experiences. And then for a long time you will really need to be responding to my posts on the need for shared experiences because i will keep re-emphasizing that.I really have no apologies for that. Maybe that will teach you how to jump and pass posts that are not relevant to you (the job this and job that posts). That said, Also my faith based narration of my experience is also something i cannot stop. If it bothers you that you are an ancestor in Canny Land and someone just landing gets a fantastic job i suggest you also deal with it. Many a time i ask myself if it is worth it being here? But remembering that what i post can be beneficial to someone else, I cannot but continue to contribute in my little measures to make integration here easier for us just like i also throw questions here to guide me in my integration process.
