Hello everyone. I have noticed that we only share our success stories here and this doesn't give a true picture of situations. We make people yet to move to think that jobs are so waiting for them and those who are here and have not gotten something or managing some small jobs to feel God has forgotten them. I remember someone shared her struggles and challenges in getting job last year here and we all came for her. Some said there must be something she is not doing right. My humble self though still in naija at that time told her it may be village people after her. This could have stopped others from sharing theirs. Please let's be open to sharing and encouraging people who have challenges settling in. What prompted this post is my phone conversation with someone going through her struggles. By the time i shared mine, she was relieved. Someone else chatted me that my story encouraged her. Mine may not be that i got that big job but that i am able to still hold it together and appreciate God for thus far He has led me. I will share one experience that i shared with them that lifted them when i come back from chirch. Right now service mode activated. It's also one of those Sundays that we sit down to mingle and chop after service so i came with an empty stomach. There is an adage in my place that says "Open your eyes like fish". My eyes are wide open now. No dulling. |

Blackbuddy: So nice to hear you had a pleasant experience with TRIEC, to think that I happen to be a registered mentor with both TRIEC and ACCES. It's my little way of helping others climb up the ladder. Though I'm not able to select the mentees assigned to me from the pool but I remain open to sharing the info I have concerning entry-way into banking especially for those who have Audit, Internal Control and Investigation background. The mentoring support I received while I was a mentee validated the networking strategy I had started on before I left Nigeria and helped to guide my job hunting efforts. Networking and mentorship opens doors here if applied appropriately. It is still ongoing. My mentor is a full blown Canadian who told me frankly that he may not inderstand what immigrants go through to get integrated into the system but he will link me up with naija immigrants who will share their stories. Infact he introduced me to a naija colleague of his whom will have a 30 minutes talking session with me just to share his experiences in our next meeting. It is really an interesting experience. I could feel the excitement the mentors on my table had during our introductory meeting.(First time mentors though). |

Blackbuddy: Hi, in addition to your course and job hunting efforts, you could consider joining CRIEC right there in Calgary and go for their mentorship programme. I know a number of people who got jobs in Calgary based on the networking opportunities and through the efforts of their mentors. You lose nothing by giving it a shot, https://www.criec.ca/ We have the Toronto version called TRIEC. I got matched with a mentor not long ago. It's been an experience. I am hopeful that the programme will be beneficial to me. In our introductory meeting, i met some naija people who were also matched the same time with me. One person said *** had to go physically to TRIEC office to get matched. Some said they wanted to be matched with elderly immigrants who had walked their path and now have their network of friends for them to tap their experience from. You really have little control over who you are matched with. If you are in Toronto and surburbs and not yet matched, be on your TRIEC coach and if possible visit the TRIEC office to get matched. |

rainazoe: a million miles away from prompt service. if you want a fast response copy professionaladvisory@bccpa.ca. You will get a response sharperly.
I didn't "read" the Law and tax o. I downloaded the text, flipped through the next, next key to the questions and did Ctrl find to look up the answers. You can take the tests multiple times so have no worries.
On my first try I noted the answers passed and failed and took time to get the correct answers again. I even googled. Correct guy. I downloaded the pdf version and was searching for the answers with the keywords. Now it's almost time for tax returns i am dreading going back to read the overview of tax. |

maziude: Hello Boss, Sorry for the delay in response. I have been battling with meeting deadlines.
Other bosses have already given the best line of action that your friends might have to consider.
They should contact supervisors in their intended research areas with a few worded email signifying their interests, experiences, the reason why they chose the researcher, attach their transcripts, resume and a list or links to their publications if they have any;at this point there is no need including research proposals unless explicitly asked to do so. They should contact as many supervisors as possible. They should ask the supervisors the funding criteria too because most schools require that the phd students be funded by their respective research labs.
The above applies to almost all disciplines. I do not know if your computer science friend has any publication atleast in a conference. If s/he does, /he has a higher chance. But then, s/he just needs to be convincing in her/his mail. Thanks man. |

saucepan: Sorry to reply late. Just to add to all that has been said. Choose a very relevant and interesting topic, develop a research proposal. First letter of contact should be a polite letter of introduction , introduce yourself, mention your research interest, mention you have met basic requirements which in most instances is a minimum of second class upper for both undergraduate and masters, finally ask if he is accepting graduate students and if so can he contact you as you want to work with him. Hoping he replies( being that you sounded poilte and all , he will likely reply at least not to be rude). At this stage he asks for a proposal and any other documents he deems necessary. Reply by sending the documents. All mails should be brief and polite not solicitous.
Let them do their homework well, check out google. Some kind professors have websites where they have put up guides for securing supervisors. Pray for God's direction to the right person. One day soon I will share my grad school admission experience ( testimony) I wish your friends the best. Meanwhile what is their field of study. As already noted, refer them to the student thread, advise them to read at least from the previous 2 threads then ask any question if confused. Thanks. One did M Sc in Computer Science while the other is doing her Doctorate in Banking and Finance. |

Omomabo: Just to add to this. It wouldn't hurt to read some of the professor's previous research and mention some of the things you gained grom their work and how you feel they can help you when sending your mail to them. I noticed i started getting responses from them when I started doing this. Some even gave me pointers on potential data sources, past research in my area, what can be improved or areas that should be considered which have been helpful. I should mention i applied mostly to Australian and New Zealand schools. Eitherway, it doesn't hurt to learn as much as possible about potential supervisor and their track records academically and supervisory wise. If they feel you are worth it, a lot would fight for you at the admission panel.
The major issue I've had so far is that most of them don't have funding for international students. But now that I have PPR shouldn't be an issue for Canada Thanks for this post. Dunno whether to still wait for @maziude or refer my friends to this thread immediately. |

vcole: they should look at the Canadian student visa thread. I bet there are loads of info there. Also Google typing in "contacting prospective supervisors in Canada" would also be a useful resource. I think the most important advice you should give them is to encourage them to be proactive with their independent search seeing as they intend to pursue a doctorate; foundation of which is research. Thanks for referring me to that thread but i was thinking its content would be visa related issues. I will also refer them to that thread. |

Thanks @salford1 and @tamm. I await @maziude's response before i refer them to the pages of this thread that dealt with their issue.
This place is some kind of wikipedia. The only thing lacking in some is decorum in responding to enquiries. I dont know how you will feel when you unmask the person behind the moniker and find out it's an old friend you have been rude to all these while. Do you read your post before hitting the submit button? Do you ask yourself how would i feel if someone responded to me in same manner?
Abeg let me come and be going before they pounce on me. |

Kayla10: Who said they would not admit them? The universities? If that's the case, they must have provided reasons for their stance. An admission refusal at the doctoral level could be for a variety of reasons. A major one being if one does not possess a thesis or research based Masters degree. Some schools would then recommend a second Masters by research degree as a prerequisite to admission into the doctorate program. However, before deciding on a course of action, it may behoove them to shop around and see if they can still find takers as different universities have different requirements and varying degrees of leniency.
For doctoral programs, admission processes at various universities will differ however, they usually follow the same rough guidelines below: 1.) Identify a school; read extensively about the school to ensure it is a good fit for you. 2.) Study their admission requirements to ensure your qualifications are a total or close match. 3.) Develop a research proposal or question and approach the supervisors (lecturers who have delegated supervisory roles) whose research interests are in alignment with your research proposal. Secure a supervisor who is willing to walk the often arduous road that is academia at the doctoral level. 4.) Apply for admission on the basis that you meet the stated requirements and have obtained a research supervisor at the university. Also, having published papers or works in respected journals will immensely help your case along. 5.) Wait for the admission decision.
Hope this helps. Thanks a lot. I think no 3 is the problem. Getting a supervisor for the research proposal. How do you get to know the superrvisor's area of interest. Do they have to visit the school and discuss with the supervisor before writing their proposals? One is already pursuing her doctorate degree at UNILAG but wants to relocate. Both did thesis based masters. |
