​Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) has released names of successful candidates that appeared before the Armed Forces Selection Review Board held from July 8 to August 26, 2017.

The list was released on Wednesday.

Candidates were selected from all states of the federation.

NDA stated that those whose names appeared on the reserve list are not expected to appear until invited.

The NDA at Kaduna is the only Military University in Nigeria.

Duration of training in the academy is 5 years, which include 4 years of academic studies and 1 year of military training.

It was established in January 1964 as a reformation of the British run Royal Military Forces Training College (RMFTC), which had been renamed the Nigerian Military Training College (NMTC) on independence.

The military institution trains the officer corps of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force. The initial class was only 62 cadets, and trainers were mostly officers in the Indian Army.

The NDA grew to an all Nigerian training staff only in 1978.

In 1985, the academy commenced offering undergraduate programmes to Military Officers In Training and now also currently offers post graduate studies both for Msc and Ph.D for both military and civilian students.

​​Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, says Nigerian government was creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

Enelamah said that government’s loans and grants were being accessed by some firms.

He assured that this will drive the growth of the Small and Medium-scale Enterprises in the country.

He added that the intervention projects would reduce unemployment among the teeming youths.

The minister spoke at the Accelerate Labs project aimed to activate and promote entrepreneurial skills of youths and start-ups.

It also seeks to equip 2,160 youths across the six geo-political zones.

Enelamah, represented by his Special Adviser, Olubunmi Adeboye, said, “As a ministry of industry and investment, we actually have a project, the Growth and Employment project which is one that we are actually coordinating.

“Grants are given specifically to the SMEs and businesses that have ideas across agriculture and technology all over the country.”

​​The introduction of The Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) banking service across banks in Nigeria has made banking transactions seamless. This is a type of banking that allows you perform bank transactions by simply dialing a short code on your phone without internet connection.

The USSD is a Global System for Mobile (GSM) communication technology. It is used for sending texts messages between a mobile phone and an application programme in the owners’ network.

Uses of USSD code

You can use the USSD code to perform various banking transactions such as buying airtime, opening bank account, checking your account balance, transferring money to your bank and other banks, and payment of utility bills, etc.

How does USSD banking work?

You must have a bank account linked to your mobile telephone number to perform a USSD transaction. You don’t need to go to a bank to register for the USSD code. Registration is done with your mobile phone as long as you have your bank’s debit card and Biometric Verification Number (BVN). You can only use the particular SIM card or the telephone number you provided when opening your account. There is a limit to the amount of money you can transfer through USSD banking, and this is determined by your bank.

Process of USSD banking

Depending on your bank, there are various ways you can use the USSD application on your phone to carry out any of the numerous bank transactions. All you need to do is dial your bank’s USSD code. Each bank has specific codes for specific type of transaction. These are provided on the bank’s website. For some banks, a list of options will appear on your phone screen. Choose the transaction you wish to perform and follow subsequent instruction from the bank.

Some banks may request your Bank Verification Number (BVN), Personal Identification Number (PIN) or the four digit number at the back of your ATM card. This is to confirm the authenticity of the person performing the transaction. If you find it difficult to perform USSD transactions on your phone, contact your bank customer service.

The dos of USSD banking

There are some things you need to do when performing a USSD transaction: Your phone should be charged to avoid loss of power in the midst of the transaction. Double-check the receiver’s account number when transferring funds or paying bill. You must wait for the confirmation text from the bank that the transaction is successful. In absence of such confirmation and your account is debited, contact your bank immediately to resolve the transaction. In case of transfer, call the receiver to confirm receipt of the fund. If the response is no and your account has been debited, contact your bank to resolve it immediately.

The don’ts of USSD banking

You must have avoid the following for a safe and successful USSD banking: Do not reveal your PIN or BVN to a third party. Do not repeat a transaction delayed or interrupted by the network. This is because the transaction might have been processed. If you repeat such transaction your account might be debited twice. All you need do is to wait for an hour or more for a notification on such transaction.

​President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday performed this year’s Eid- el-Kabir prayer in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State. The president later charged corps members who visited him after the prayers to uphold the country’s unity.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, who addressed the corps members on behalf of the President, assured them of government’s commitment to the unity of the country.

Buhari said the NYSC scheme was the best reconciliatory scheme and would remain relevant, adding that his administration would continue to uphold the unity of the country.

Speaking to newsmen at his country home after the prayers, Buhari said the NYSC scheme had over the years continued to pursue the purpose of integrating the country, noting that diversity of cultures remained Nigeria’s greatest strength.

Nnamdi John, who spoke on behalf of the corps members, commended the President for granting them audience. He said that as corps members, they would continue to promote the unity of the country through enlightenment and community development services.

The corps members were presented with 10 bags of rice, a bull and N250,000 cash for their Sallah celebration. Corps members in Daura always throng the President’s residence for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

​Premier League clubs spent a record total of £1.413 billion over the course of the summer window, representing a rise of £293 million from last year.

The league confirmed the figures on its official website.

In the 2014 and 2015 summer windows, the clubs shelled out only £809.6m and £858.6m respectively.

The BBC also reports that clubs spent a record £210m on transfer deadline day, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Danny Drinkwater and Mamadou Sakho representing Thursday’s biggest deals.

The increase in spending, is funded by the introduction of the new TV deal, which covers 2016 to 2019 and is worth £5.136bn.

In 2014 and 2015, before the TV deal, official revenue was £3.368bn and £3.648bn respectively.

Dan Jones, partner and head of the Sports Business Group at Deloitte, explained it further.

“These are the biggest numbers we have ever seen but these are the biggest revenues we have ever seen.

“It is absolutely not out of step on previous years and we don’t anticipate revenues going down any time soon. I was asked in the mid-1990s, on the back of Euro ’96, if this was sustainable and if the bubble was going to burst, but the fundamentals remain very strong,” Jones said.

​The victorious female national basketball team has been received by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

The President approved N1 million each for the D’Tigress, who conquered Africa in the 2017 FIBA Women AfroBasket tournament in Mali and qualifying for the 2018 FIBA Women Basketball World Cup in Spain.

He also approved N500,000 each for the team officials.

President Buhari made the announcement before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting on Wednesday.

Team captain, Aisha Mohammed told reporters that the cash reward would spur them to go for gold in Spain next year.

​President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Biodun Ogunyemi, has explained why they stayed away from the scheduled meeting with the Federal Government on Tuesday .

Ogunyemi stated that the union had earlier submitted details of views collated from its members, following the meeting with government a fortnight ago to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige. as well as his Education counterpart.

According to him, the union will only accept a meeting if government replies its proposal.

“Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, were forced to proceed on indefinite, comprehensive and total strike action on Sunday, 13th August, 2017 following Government’s failure to implement issues, on which understanding was reached during the suspended warning strike of November, 2016.

“We have since held talks with representatives of government and consulted our members nationwide on steps to be taken to immediately resolve the lingering crises.

“Among issues in the dispute are the registration of the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO), fractionalization of salaries in Federal Universities and gross under-funding/non-funding of State Universities, and arrears and implementation of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

“Other issues are release of fund for revitalization of public universities as spelt out in 2013 Memorandum of Understanding, guidelines for retirement benefits of professors i line with 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement, Treasury Single Account (TSA) and withdrawal of support for universities’ staff primary schools.

“On Thursday, 17th August, 2017, we met with officials of the officials of the ministry of education and labour and employment where it was agreed that the union should consult and “revert back to government”. Following the due consultation, we have collated the views of our members on the offers from the government in dispute in the latter of 16th August 2017. These views were submitted to federal government vide our letter dated 28th August 2017.

“As we await the Federal Government’s action on our letter, we hope that it would not be long before we receive a positive response which will bring an end to the dispute. Meanwhile, we thank all Nigerians, particularly our student (and their parent) and the media, for their understanding, so far ,on the need to speedily address the issues in the best interest of the Nigerian University System and for the overall development of the country.” he said in a statement.

​The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has defended the pegging of 120 as minimum cut-off marks for university admission.

The decision, which was reached at a stakeholders’ policy meeting in Abuja, has generated controversy with many universities rejecting the marks.

JAMB’s Head of Information Dr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement yesterday in Abuja, said the board would not be deterred and would continue to support policies that would bring Nigeria’s education out of the woods.

He explained that previous cut off marks were never strictly followed by most institutions.

Dr. Benjamin said most universities failed to fill their admission quota in the last 10 years.

The statement reads: “The much trending controversy over the just released cut off marks for 2017 admission exercise by stakeholders at the policy meeting is quite unnecessary.

“All Heads of tertiary institutions were requested to submit their cut off benchmark to the board which will then be used for the admission. And these benchmarks once determined cannot be changed in the middle of admission exercise.

“Again, it is necessary to explain that the 120 mark does not in any way suggest that once you have 120 then admission is sure for you. Institutions will admit from the top to the least mark.

“We are now starting the actually monitoring of adherence to admissions guide lines, cut off marks inclusive. The cut off marks being branded by the public as previous cut off marks were never strictly followed by most institutions.

“The board will equally ensure that it correct all anomalies existing, especially as regards the powers of institutions to make pronouncements on admissions and other related matters affecting the institutions.”

According to him, institutions in the past went behind to admit candidates with less cut-off marks, while also accusing some institutions of admitting candidates without JAMB results.

“Institutions were going behind to admit candidates with far less with others admitting candidates who never sat for JAMB. This act to say the least is very distasteful and damaging to our national data and identity.

“Unfortunately, the public has been kept away from this fact for such a long time and now that we are saying it the way it is and working to address it, the public is criticising us using non existing parameters that were only announced and not followed.

“In years past, admissions were done with worst cut off marks. We are determined and ready to correct all these with the 2017 exercise. The Board has designed a Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) to check back door admission and other unwholesome practices associated with admission.

“We are sure that the system will bring out the good in us as it will also make provision for candidates to track their admission. This empowers them to raise queries if a candidate they have better scores and other prerequisites are admitted which CAPS will not allow anyway. This is the inclusiveness and transparency that education needs,” he added.

​Osun State Government has announced free train for Osun-bound travellers from Lagos, for the purpose of easing the mobility of those who wish to celebrate Eid-el-kabir in the state.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Industries and Cooperatives, Hon. Ismail Adekunle Jayeoba-Alagbada, made the announcement on Sunday through a statement.

He said the gesture was in furtherance of Governor Rauf Aregbesola administration’s commitment to the welfare of the ordinary people.

“The free train is expected to move from Lagos twice to Osogbo and will operate only one trip for the post-sallah return journey.

“The first train moves from Lagos on Wednesday August 30th, 2017 at exactly 10am from the Iddo Terminus, Lagos enroute Ikeja, through Ogun and Oyo State to end the journey in Osogbo. Another one leaves at the same time on Thursday August 31st, 2017”, the statement reads.

​There is an imminent mass failure at the Osun State University, a multi-campus state-owned institution, as students of the university were made to write examinations amid panic and tension.

This followed a second semester examinations in the school scheduled to commence on August 14, which coincidentally was some days after Academic Staff Union of the University (ASUU) declared an indefinite strike across the country.

The management of the ivory tower, led by the Vice-chancellor, Prof. Labode Popoola, therefore, resolved to go ahead with the examinations despite irrecoverable stance of the academic staff in the university to comply with the directive for full action .

We gathered from reliable sources that Popoola, a professor of Forest Economics devised a means in which the examinations would be conducted without members of ASUU, by securing the services of Non-academic staff, including security personnel.

Our Reporter exclusively obtained a protest letter by ASUU, dated August 22, with a subject”Re-Request For Full Compliance with Strike Action, where it expressed it’s disappointment over the development, and reiterated the earlier stance it has taken to comply with the strike order without compromise.

The letter, which was signed by the trio of the Chairman, ASUU, UNIOSUN chapter, Dr Abiona Oluseye, the Secretary, Dr Wande Olaosebikan and the Coordinator, ASUU Ibadan zone, Dr Ade Adejumo reads”ASUU-UNIOSUN via a letter dated 18th August, 2017 communicated to the Provosts, Deans, Directors, and Heads of Departments, the observation of their non-compliance with the strike action on the 12th August, 2017.

“The strike action was to be total, comprehensive, and indefinite, which among other things include non-participation of its members in the conduct of the ongoing 2016/2017 Rain Semester examinations.

“Recall also that members of this union in UNIOSUN overwhelmingly voted in support of the strike action via a referendum conducted on Thursday, 10th August, 2017.

“It was observed that some unconventional personnel (Technologists and Security Officers) were used in the conduct of the said examinations in some of the University’s campuses.

“This situation is unacceptable to our union and we make bold to say that examination answer booklets that emanated from such an exercise shall not be assessed by our members when the opportunity to that presents itself.

“Sir, we also wish to remind you that while efforts are ongoing at resolving issues raised by the union, academic staff members in UNIOSUN are still resolute in their resolve to have total compliance to the strike declared by the union”.

The union, thereafter followed up it’s stance with action, by invading examination halls to chase away students and destroying examination materials.

The incessant invasion of examination halls by members of ASUU invariably created panic and tension among students, and many of them faulted the back-door approach of the management in conducting examinations through boycott.

While the whole Faculty of Agriculture at Ejigbo boycotted MTH 102 examination on August 24, Physiology students at the main campus of the university in Osogbo followed suit, and even went further to confront the Vice-chancellor to know their fate.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the university, Mr Jibola Oyekunle in his reaction denied that students in the school were made to write their exams under tension and panic, but admitted that they were being chased out of examinations halls constantly by members of ASUU.

Oyekunle said it is not correct to say that the university management was forcing students to write examinations under duress, rather it is the students that “are eager to complete their studies.”

According to him, the situation on the campus is not as bad as it has been painted, alleging that some of the students who have not been well prepared for the examinations were those spearheading the boycott.

He added that academic staff in the university are not “cooperating with the management to put things in the right order”.

“To the best of my knowledge, students are not writing examinations under duress, it is the students that are eager to complete their studies.

“The university management has been making frantic efforts to make ASUU see the pertinent reason why they have to cooperate and make the university to have successful completion of this session to no avail.

” I can confirm to you that there is tussle between the management and ASUU.

“You will agree with me that no serious management will close down the school because ASUU is on strike, ” Oyekunle averred.

We further gathered that a circular from the office of the Vice-chancellor on Friday informed the university community of a new date for the aborted examinations, which have been re-scheduled to hold between Saturday, August 26 and Thursday, August 31.

​The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board says the admission processes for 2017/2018 will commence on Sept.15 and close on Jan.31, 2018.

The Head of JAMB Information and Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria in Bwari, Abuja, on Friday.

Benjamin said that the direct entry applications for admission would close Sept. 15.

He explained that students could only secure admission after they might have passed through the rudiments of admission processes.

“We have come up with Central Admission Processing System this year.

“This entails that once candidates are admitted and the institution approves, then JAMB will approve, the information about the candidates will be keyed into CAPS automatically.

“Candidates can monitor their admission process through CAPS online and those who want to get admission letter can do so by printing such online.’’

According to him, CAPS will make record gathering easy and give easy access to students to print their admission letters among other things.

“What we are trying to do now is that we are looking at the perimeter realistically; we decided to come up with new strategy aimed at ensuring the actual data.”

​There are indications that three non-academic staff unions of Nigerian universities are set to embark on industrial action.

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are currently on indefinite strike nationwide over non-implementation of the demands, including the 2009 signed agreement between it and the FG.

A major aspect of the issues in contention is the non payment of N880 billion Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).

The non-academic staff on the platform of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) had therefore mandated the various branches to conduct referendum to ascertain whether to down tools in protest against non-implementation of their demands by the Federal Government.

JAC made up of the leaders of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) met in Abuja on Wednesday and directed branches to conduct referendum on the impending strike.

SSANU National Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abdussobur Salaam, who confirmed the directive, said the various branches of SSANU, NASU and NAAT have up to next week Wednesday to submit the outcome of each congress’ referendum.

He told newsmen on Thursday that they have, “decided to throw back the issues to our members in various branches to take a position.

“I must let you know that our members in SSANU, NASU and NAAT are agitated. JAC gave the various branches up till next week Wednesday to send in the result of the referendum.’’

He disclosed that part of the reasons for the proposed strike was the non-implementation of the National Industrial Court (INC) ruling on university staff school teachers and earned allowance of members.

He debunked insinuations that SSANU was following the footstep of ASUU.

“We were the first union to embark on warning strike this year. We only suspended it. If the referendum gives the order, we will only resume from where we stopped in January 2017,’’ he said.

This is as he declared that anyone calling for the President’s resignation or wish him dead shall fall sick.

He added that persons calling for the resignation of Buhari are insane.

Akanbi spoke during a prayer session he organised for the President in Iwo yesterday.

According to the monarch, Nigerians ought to be praying for Buhari and other leaders rather than wishing them evil.

The monarch said he wished to be affected by any sickness which would affect the President so that he (Buhari) could continue to work to make Nigeria better.

He said, “If anyone claims he or she loves Nigeria, the love for the leaders can’t be sidelined. If you claim you love Nigeria and you don’t love the leaders, you have just told a lie.

“It is painful that those who launched that campaign of ‘Resume or Resign’ are not patriotic as they claimed. They politicised the campaign which shouldn’t be.

“Buhari is my son and I won’t be happy when people are wishing him dead.

“If any civil servant or police officer falls sick, will you advise such persons to resign? Those clamouring for Buhari’s resignation are not sane.

“Nigerians don’t love those that love them but they are passionate about those that hate them.

“All those who are wishing him dead and those who are clamouring for his resignation shall fall sick.”

​President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has revealed how the national assembly intends to end backdoor employments in the country.

The Senate President said that the Upper Legislative Chamber will accelerate the passage of the Existing Vacancies in the Federal Civil Service (Prohibition) Bill, once it resumes in September.

This was contained in a statement signed by Saraki’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu.

Saraki said in the statement that the Bill, which is currently due for Second Reading, will be given priority as one of the Senate’s legislative interventions to curb the increasing rates of illegal recruitment into federal government agencies and parastatals.

The statement said, “The Existing Vacancies Bill will put in place clear-cut procedures that will help to curb and possibly end the trend of ‘silent or underground recruitment.

“This country belongs to every Nigerian, and as such, all vacancies that exist in the Federal Civil Service must be properly advertised to give every Nigerian that meet the requirement a chance to apply.”

Saraki further said that the objective of the Bill, which was introduced by Senator Biodun Olujimi, the Senate Deputy Minority Whip, is to make it an offence for a Federal Ministry, Agency or Parastatal to fill existing vacancies in their organizations if such vacancies have not been advertised publicly.

He added, “With this Bill, we will set time-frames for recruitment and the publication of recruitment in national dailies.

“This will make it the duty of the heads of government agencies and ministries to ensure compliance or face punitive measures.

​The Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Abdullahi Baffa, yesterday disclosed that a high-level fraud involving some academics and staff of his agency had been uncovered.

According to him, the lecturers and the staff had abused the intervention funds of the agency on pretext that they were pursuing further academic qualifications or attending conferences.

Baffa made this known when executive members of Senior Staff Union of Colleges of Education in Nigeria (SSUCOEN) paid a courtesy visit to his office.

He particularly disclosed that the scholars and the staff were awarded sponsorship to attain further degrees as well as attend conferences but ended up abandoning such programmes and used the monies for other purposes.

The development, according to him, violates the terms of approvals the funds were granted to them. To this end, the Executive Secretary vowed that henceforth, violators of the intervention funds would not go without facing the full wrath of the law.

The TETFund boss, who decried the detected infractions and described it as “very unfortunate”, said: ‘’a situation where some scholars and other staff engaged in the abuse of intervention processes by not adhering to guidelines stipulated by the Fund must stop.’’

The TETFund Executive Secretary, who expressed his unflinching resolve to adhere strictly to the provisions of the TETFund Act in carrying out the activities of the Fund, described transparency and accountability as his watch words.

While thanking the union leader for recognizing the role of TETFund in providing physical infrastructure and human capital development necessary for the promotion of teaching and learning in public tertiary institutions in the country, Baffa described the interventions of TETFund as the live wire that has sustained the activities of beneficiary institutions.

Speaking on some of the efforts that have been made since he assumed office to ensure equity in the disbursement of funds for the various interventions, Dr. Baffa stated that non-teaching staff of beneficiary institutions who hitherto were not involved in workshop attendance are now eligible to attend workshops for five days for a start.

Reacting to the request by the union for inclusion of non-teaching staff in the Academic Staff Training and Development Programme, the Executive Secretary stated that his organization has been receiving such requests, adding that the matter may be tabled at the next Strategic Planning Workshop and perhaps a policy on the issue made.

On the request for adjustments in the percentage of allocation of funds to teaching and non-teaching staff, Dr. Baffa informed the leadership of the union that the Fund has introduced the ICT Support Intervention which is meant for both teaching and non-teaching staff, with no mention of ratio of disbursements.

This development, he said, was a step towards accommodating both categories of staff in beneficiary institutions.Dr. Baffa commended the harmonious relationship which he noted, has been existing between the different unions in tertiary educational institutions in the country

​The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has revealed how the cut off marks were fixed for higher institutions.

It said contrary to insinuations that it fixed the Tuesday’s tertiary institutions’ minimum admission cut-off marks, it was rather a collective decision of stakeholders in the education sector.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, spoke to reporters yesterday, insisting that stakeholders in the sector unanimously agreed that the minimum cut-off marks for the university degree for the 2017 academic year be put at 120, lower than the previous years, which stood at 180.

He allayed fears that the development might further lower Nigeria’s education standard.

He stated that besides the board recommending cut-off marks for universities, polytechnics and colleges of education as well as monotechnics, individual institutions could raise their admission benchmark higher but not above 180 and below 120 for universities.

He said, “With this decision, universities are not to go below the minimum 120 cut-off points adopted by the meeting for admissions.

“What JAMB did was a recommendation, we only determined the minimum, whatever the various institutions determine as their admission cut-off mark is their decisions.

“The Senate and academic boards of universities should be allowed to determine their cut-off marks.“

​Nigerians applying for UK visas now have to go through a new process, the British High Commission announced on Friday.

In a statement obtained by DAILY POST, the spokesperson of the Commission, Joe Abuku, explained that the slight change means “visa staff now only need electronic versions of support documents”

This new process takes effect from December 5, for those who will be applying for a UK visa in Victoria Island and Ikeja in Lagos.

“TLSContact (responsible for UK Visa Application Centres in Nigeria) will scan your supporting documents whilst you’re at the visa application centre, and then return your original documents to you,” the statement said.

“They will then send these (electronic) documents to UKVI, with your passport and application form, and visa officers will consider your application in the usual way.”

The Commission has requested that applicants provide all documents in A4 size to avoid delays. Documents smaller or larger than A4, should be photocopied onto A4-sized paper.

It also advised customer to remove any clips or pins from documents before submitting their application.

​The end to the ongoing strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) seems not to be in sight as the meeting between the Nigerian government and the union has hit the rocks.

During the meeting, which held on Thursday, the Federal Government promised to fulfill some of the conditions being demanded by the Academic Staff Union of Universities in an attempt to end the strike by the union.

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chris Ngige, who convened the meeting with the union leaders, said the government would meet certain conditions.

It was gathered that the ASUU leaders who attended the parley did not agree to call off the strike.

The ASUU President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi who led the executive members of the union to the meeting said he needed to brief other members of the union.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, while meeting with Senate Committee on Tertiary Education at the National Assembly complex.

The National Youth Service Corps members (NYSC) have issued out a warning strike starting from 1st September to 14th September, 2017.

This is to implore the Federal Government of Nigeria to keep to it promise of increasing the Corp members allowance (Allawee) from N19,800 to N49,800, starting from August 2017.

It was agreed during National Corpers Forum meeting held in Abuja, that if at the end of August, Corper’s allowance is not increased to N49,800, NYSC will embark on a two week warning strike.

During this period Corps members nationwide will adhere strictly to the following:

“ 1) That Corps members nationwide will not go near their PPA or carry out their primary assignment in any form.

2) That all CDS activities will be suspended indefinitely.

3) That Corps members will not put on their khaki or anything relating to NYSC kits.

4) That Corpers will no longer hid to the Clarion call.

​The governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose, has asked the Federal Government to increase the monthly allowance of Corps members in the country from N19,800 to N50,000.

He made the appeal in Ise Ekiti during the closing ceremony of the orientation course of the 2017 batch “A” stream 2.

Represented by Lanre Ogunsuyi, his Commissioner for Information, Youths and Sports; Fayose said: “Nigerians must collectively join me to mandate the federal government to increase the allowance from N19,800 to N50,000.

“On our part, the Ekiti government will provide all the necessary support for the Corps members to make their service year memorable in the state.

Meanwhile, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) State Coordinator, Ukagha Eze, charged the corps members to see themselves as leaders of tomorrow.

“I want to charge all Corps members to always see themselves as leaders of tomorrow and stay away from corruption during and after the service year,” she said.

On the security of Corps members, the Permanent Secretary State Ministry of Information, Kola Ajumobi assured corps members deployed to the state of safety in their national assignment.

“Ekiti State is the most peaceful state in Nigeria, Corps members can tour the 16 local governments of the state any time they like, they are very safe,” he said.

The corps members’ allowance was increased by former president Goodluck Jonathan in July 2011, from N9,775 to N19,800.

​The Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, yesterday assured Nigerians that the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), may end in two days.

In an interview with The Guardian, the Minister stated that the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has a policy of engaging unions, including ASUU.

“I hope and believe that this would be a one or two days strike. We have a policy of engaging the unions, including ASUU and I think now we are very serious.

“This is the first time in two years that ASUU is declaring a strike,” Adamu said.

Adamu also held a closed-door meeting with the leader of the Federal Government Renegotiation Team, Dr. B. O Babalakin (SAN).

Babalakin had in January, inaugurated the 16-member team to renegotiate the 2009 agreement.
