​The Presidency has said that the industrial action declared by ASUU on Monday was totally unnecessary.

This was said by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, who also indicated that the amount of money being demanded by the union was unrealizable.

Shehu spoke in an interview on Channels Television’s programme, Sunrise Daily yesterday.

According to him, the leaders of ASUU were aware of the fact that the current administration inherited the agreements based on which the industrial action was declared.

He said ASUU was also aware that the Federal Government had set up a committee on the matter.

Shehu gave an indication that the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government might not be able to meet the huge financial obligation the striking lecturers were demanding since the N850bn debt was more than the total allocation to the Ministry of Education in the 2017 Budget, which he put at N369bn.

Shehu said, “Governments enter into agreements that they can pay for. Ability to pay is a key requirement in going into agreements.

“Since President Buhari assumed office, he has sent words out there in form of a warning to all government institutions that they should not go into negotiations and agreements that they cannot pay for; but get clearance.

“I understand that they are talking about debts owed their members to the tune of N850bn. If I am correct, the entire appropriation for the Ministry of Education for this year is N369bn. So where do they want us to get the money from?

“We have inherited these agreements and we are not running away from them. Government has set up a committee led by (Dr Wale) Babalakin. They are already sitting. Why didn’t they sit down and negotiate?

“This strike is totally unnecessary. The issues can be resolved, especially where we have full understanding of where we are coming from. The governments that signed those agreements did not deem it fit to implement because the capacity was not there.

“If they are ready, they can sit down and discuss with the committee that has capable and qualified people as members.

“They want all the problems to go with a wave of the hand. They want all the answers to all their problems at a go. There is an avenue that the government has opened for them for dialogue and it is not closed yet.”

The​ ​National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has​ ​reacted to th​e ​indefinite strike​ ​declared by​ ​the Academ​ic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)​.​

Chinonso Obasi, National President, NANS ​in a statement ​on Monday,
​urged government to negotiate with the lecturers.

“It is with deep pain and regret that NANS received the news of another indefinite strike by ASUU over the Federal Government’s indifference to their plight.

“Nigerian students see the break down in negotiations as a further proof that political leaders don’t care about their future.

”Consequently, we wish to call on the Federal Government to do all it can to get ASUU back to the classrooms.

“The demands of ASUU are reasonable and touch on the integrity of government, especially in the light of the fight against corruption,” he said.

​Obasi lamented that past governments ​f​ail​ed​ to honour agreements with members of ASUU for more than seven years.

Obasi​ urged government to resolve outstanding issues with ASUU in the interest of Nigerian students.

​One hundred and nine corps members posted to Jigawa in the Batch `A’ Stream have been redeployed to other states, according to Mr Michael Amolo, NYSC Coordinator in the state.

Amolo disclosed this on Monday in Dutse, when NYSC Director General, Brig-Gen. Zakari Kazaure, paid an inspection visit to the NYSC camp.

“Among those redeployed were 25 pregnant women, 11 nursing mothers and 73 others with health challenges,” Amolo said. He said that the affected corps members were redeployed after management considered their pleas and found them genuine and legitimate.

According to him, 1,767 corps members were registered, compromising 1,278 males 489 females. In his response, Kazaure, who was represented by Mrs. Adetun Makinde, Director, Human Resources Management, NYSC headquarters, Abuja, advised corps members to respect the religion, culture and tradition of their host communities.

He also urged them to take advantage of the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme to prepare for a more productive life after the service.

​N-Power has announced that its online assessment test will end on August 31.

The information is contained in an update/reminder on the N-Power website.

N-Power commenced online assessment on July 1.

Three categories – Tax, Health and Agro – have attempted the test.

Assessment test for N-Power Agro applicants ended August 1 while N-Teach assessment tests commenced on Wednesday, August 9.

Teach volunteers are expected to improve basic education delivery in Nigeria and will be deployed as teacher assistants in primary schools nationwide.

The programme explains that they will not replace the current teachers, but are to work as support teaching staff, assist with school management and other functions within the schools.

The duration of the programme is 2 years and participants will undergo an initial induction training prior to deployment.

Meanehile, the programmed has​ revealed when physical verification of applicants will commence.

The N-Power Volunteer Corps is part of the Federal government’s Social Investment Programmes, under which it plans to hire 350,000 unemployed graduates

​The Senator representing Kaduna Central constituency at the National Assembly, Shehu Sani has thrown his weight behind the commencement of the indefinite nationwide industrial action by members of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU.

Shehu, who took to his Facebook page, on Monday urged the executive to meet up with the demands of the body.

He wrote: “First, I wholeheartedly support ASUU strike. Secondly, I call on the executive to dialogue and meet up the demands of the Union.

“Thirdly, the need to declare emergency on the state of public universities, polytechnic and colleges of education is now.”

DAILY POST had earlier reported that ASUU’s national President, Dr. Biodun Ogunyemi, had during a meeting of the National Executive Council of ASUU in Abuja announced the commencement of a nationwide industrial action.

Ogunyemi said that during the strike, there shall be no teaching, no examination and no attendance of statutory meetings of any kind in any of the union branches across the country.

​No fewer than 44,000 companies have been delisted from the database of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

The commission has also registered over 1.5 million companies.

Registrar General of the CAC, Bello Mahmud, said this in a chat with the Economic Confidential in Abuja.

He said the development was sequel to several breaches of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) and other extant regulations of the commission, notably, late and outright refusal to file returns.

“So far there is an improvement and a current ratio of 45 per cent. We are still checking on company records, especially in terms of compliance for those who have not been filing.

“If we discover you are not a going concern, the law establishing us gives us the power to delist from our database.

“If we discover and write you first, second and third letter without reply, we now deem it that you are not a going concern and we delist you from our database.

“So far, the first batch we delisted were about nine thousand (9000) And in the second batch about thirty-five (35,000) totalling 44,000 firms delisted from our database and is still ongoing”, he said.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has today on its official Facebook page denied launching a portal for payment of N75,000 to ex-NYSC corps members.

Earlier this week, the news of the NYSC scheme launching a portal for ex corps members to register and get N75,000 stipend has been circulating, but the scheme has come out to say its all false.

In the Facebook post by the NYSC, the scheme stated that the information is false, and misleading, as they advised the general public to disregard the claims.

Brig.-Gen. Zakari Kazaure, the Director General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has encouraged the corps members to inter-marry.

“I am encouraging inter-marriages between you; I want all the girls in this camp who are not married to marry, I will gladly attend,” he said at the orientation camp in Amada, Akko LGA of Gombe State.

Kazaure, while addressing Batch A Stream 2 corps members, also urged them to set up small businesses after their service year.

“I want you to set up small businesses, no matter how small after your service year.

“I do not want my corp members to be going around offices in the name of seeking for white collar job which is not forthcoming.

“Set up your small business no matter how small it is, do not despise your little beginning,” he said.

He appealed to them to shun social vices capable of destroying their future.

Ibe Tobias, the NYSC Coordinator in Gombe State, said there were no less than 1,470 corp members in stream 2.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Sunday Roberts Aroni, earlier today, Tuesday 1st August, kick started the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) in Ondo State, by laying the foundation of the SAED Centre in the state.

The bricklaying of the ultra modern SAED centre was done at the NYSC Ondo State permanent orientation camp, Ikare Akoko.

Aroni made it known to the public that the SAED center was to help create conducive atmosphere for corps members to be self reliant and sufficient entrepreneurs. He said;

“Since our mandate is to enhance the corps members to be self reliant and sufficient entrepreneurs after the National Youth Service, the least the scheme can do is to create a conducive atmosphere that can help in achieving the mandate.

“The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), holds the largest population of literate and talented youth in Africa if not in the world, so the scheme is trying to refine and annex these talents and skills, and thereby challenge them towards nation building in the area of entrepreneurship.”

​The Comptroller General (CG) of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Muhammad Babandede has disclosed that the border police will employ 1,112 officers in its ongoing recruitment drive.

Babandede made this known yesterday during a chat with the media.

According to him, the current recruitment drive was meant to fill the shortfall of slots left after the service had re-absorbed 888 of 2,000 officers engaged in May 2015, who were later disengaged in August of the same year.

“I inherited a big problem when I came on board with a lot of young officers protesting on the streets about the recruitment that was cancelled in 2015,” Babandede said, in reference to the 2,000 officers that were fired by the Muhammadu Buhari administration in August, 2015.

The Comptroller General said it was based on his recommendation the sacked 2,000 officers were re-screened to verify their credentials and security reports.

He further said that at the end of the exercise the Immigration Board authenticated and reabsorbed 888 officers back to the service; adding that the ongoing employment was therefore aimed at providing replacement for the 1,112 laid off by the re-screening of the initial 2,000 hired in May 2015.

Biography of Late Sikiru Kayode Adetona the Awujale of Ijebuland

Late Sikiru Kayode Adetona was born the 10th of May 1934 and was the Awujale (king) of the Ijebu Kingdom before his death. He reigned as king from 1960 to 2017.

Late Sikiru Kayode Adetona was the son of Prince Rufai Adetona and Alhaja Ajibabi Adetona (née Onashile) and represented the Anikinaiya ruling family.

Late Sikiru Kayode Adetona Biography – Early Life

Young Prince Adetona, variously attended Baptist School, Ereko, Ijebu Ode; Ogbere United Primary School, Oke Agbo, Ijebu Igbo; and Ansar-Ud-Deen School, Ijebu Ode between 1943 and 1950. For his secondary education, he was at Olu-Iwa (now Adeola Odutola) College, Ijebu Ode from 1951 to 1956. Between 1957 and 1958 he took up appointment with the then Audit Department of the Western Region, Ibadan. The prince resigned his appointment in 1958 to pursue further studies in accountancy in the United Kingdom, which was the colonial ruler of Nigeria at the time.

How Late Sikiru Kayode Adetona became king

By a letter dated January 4, 1960 referenced CB. 4 1/333, the Permanent Secretary in the Western Region Ministry of Local Government conveyed to the Local Government Adviser in Ijebu Ode approval of the Western Region Governor in Council, the appointment of Prince Sikiru Kayode Adetona as the Awujale of Ijebuland with effect from that date (January 4, 1960). It became the lot of Ijebu notables like the late Ogbeni-Oja, Chief (Dr.) Timothy Adeola Odutola, Bobasuwa I, Chief Emmanuel Okusanya Okunowo (MBE, KFNM); and Asiwaju, Chief Samuel Olatubosun Shonibare to arrange for the home-coming of the King-elect. On January 18, 1960, the Head of the Ijebu Ode Regency Council, the Ogbeni-Oja, Chief Timothy Adeola Odutola formally presented the new traditional ruler to the whole world. This presentation, which was a novelty, signalled the commencement of the installation ceremonies of the king-elect. It was indeed, a new dawn in the annals of Ijebu people. The king-elect thereafter, proceeded to undergo the traditional seclusion at the Odo for three months.

Late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who had earlier been nominated along with five others by the ODIS was unanimously selected by the king makers in conformity with Section 11 of the Chiefs Law of 1957 applicable in Western Region. The then Governor signed the Instrument of Office approving Prince Sikiru Kayode Adetona as Awujale of Ijebuland. The formal coronation took place on Saturday, April 2, 1960.

On Tuesday, April 5, 1960 newly crowned Oba Adetona, took his seat as a member of the Western Region House of Chiefs, after a formal introduction. Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona was a charismatic Prince, and some Obas and Chiefs nominated him for the presidency of the House of Chiefs. Albeit, an older and traditionally more senior Oba, late Sir Adesoji Aderemi, Ooni of Ife was subsequently elected the President. The thought here was that early as a monarch, the twenty-six-year-old Awujale was a fit and proper king for the exalted position. No doubt, this consideration was an admission of the uniqueness of the Awujale of Ijebuland.

Sikiru Kayode Adetona was born 10 May 1934 and wad the Awujale (king) of the Ijebu Kingdom, a traditional state in Nigeria, having reigned since 1960. He was the son of Prince Rufai Adetona and Alhaja Ajibabi Adetona (née Onashile) and represented the Anikinaiya ruling family.

​Assessment test for N-Power Agro applicants will end August 1.

This is contained in an update/reminder on N-Power website.

The current Agro test only applies to those who registered between June 13 and July 14.

Applicants in different categories in N-Power test which started July 1 have attempted the test. They are Tax, Health and Agro.

Fabinfos reports that applicants under Teach category will be start theirs by August 2.

However, applicants who registered between July 15 and 27 will commence their test from August 17.

The N-portal reopened for registration on Tuesday​ June 13 and was scheduled to close on July 13.

But Acting President Yemi Osinbajo intervened and extended registration by two weeks.

Meanwhile, Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, has assured the N-Power teach volunteers in the state that they will be absorbed into the civil service at the end of their service.

THE National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Imo State, yesterday, swore in 1,515 corps members of 2017 Batch ‘A’ Stream II deployed to the state for their one year compulsory service to the country.


This was made known by the NYSC State Coordinator, Imo State, James Olugbodi. He also made it known that among the 1,515 corps members who were posted to the state, there were 777 males and 738 females.

The State Coordinator also said that the orientation course had been structured to adequately prepare the corps members for the task ahead, particularly against the rigours of the service year.

The Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, represented by Basil Aharanwa, permanent secretary in the Deputy Governor’s Office, congratulated the corps members on their deployment to serve Imo, assuring that his government would reward corps members that distinguish themselves in the service year.

Abegunde stated that the Governor has heard the calls from the scheme for uplifting of the camp, and is set to intervene.

When asked by fabinfos correspondence on how soon the project was going to commence, a clearly confident Abegunde assured that once the money is released the renovation is going to commence. He also went further to state that visible changes are expected before the next set of corps members step on the camp (i.e 2017 Batch B).

The NYSC Stae Coordinator, Ondo State, Mr Sunday Aroni, also called on the 18 Local government Chairmen in Ondo state, to make their presence felt in the camp, by erecting structures to ease the accomodation problem.

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Ondo State, today, swore in 1,882 corps members of 2017 Batch ‘A’ Stream II deployed to the state for their one year compulsory service to the country.

This was made known earlier today by the NYSC State Coordinator, Ondo State, Mr. Sunday Robert Aroni, while delivering his speech at the Swearing-in ceremony of the 2017 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members at NYSC permanent orientation camp, Ikare Akoko.

Mr. Aroni also revealed that the figure of sworn in 2017 Batch ‘A’ Stream II corps members in the state is made up of 1,417 males and 465 females.

The State Coordinator appreciated the state Governor for his prompt response to the schemes request for Counterpart funding and renovation of the camp to bring it to standard level.

He also used the opportunity to call on the 18 Local government Chairmen in the state, to make their presence felt in the camp, by erecting structures to ease the accomodation problem. He said;

“I wish to appreciate His Excellency for his prompt response to our request for Counterpart fundung and renovation of the camp to bring it to standard level. I believe in no distant time this camp will be wearing a new look.

“Let me also use this opportunity to plead with His Excellency to encourage the 18 local government Chairmen in the state to make their presence felt in the camp by erecting structures which would be named after them to ease the accomodation problem faced in the camp by corps members and all camp officials.

“I am equally calling on all well meaning citizens of Ondo State to contribute towards this noble gesture of transforming Ondo NYSC camp.”
