The Federal Government has pledged to support in the growth and sustenance of the one-year-old Sierra Leonean National Youth Service scheme.

The Director-General of the NYSC, Brig.-Gen. Suleiman Kazaure, made the promise when he received a delegation from the National Youth Service of Sierra Leone and the Sierra-Leonean Ministry of Youths on Tuesday in Abuja.

Kazaure said the scheme would share with the Sierra Leone national youth service, its challenges and successes which would provide more insight into how best it can succeed and sustain the programme.

He said that the scheme would also share with the organisation the strategies it had put in place over the years which has enabled the scheme succeed in all areas of its endeavour.

“The NYSC though continues to count successes in all areas; it has not had it smooth. The scheme continues to face challenges even though we always make the effort to address them as they come.

“Currently the scheme mobilises over 300,000 corps members yearly and that is a challenge for us because this number increases every year.

“We always have to contend with availability of facilities to cater for this increasing number,’’ Kazaure said.

Earlier, Dr Sheku Kamara, the Sierra Leone Presidential Adviser on Youth, who led the delegation, said the government was ‘eternally indebted’ to Nigeria for supporting it in times of war and peace.

Kamara recalled that Nigeria was by the side of Sierra Leone when it struggled with the Ebola crisis, adding that it is also coming to its assistance now in the development of its national youth service.

He said the team was visiting the NYSC to see what examples and lessons can be learnt and possibly implement back in the country.

“We are here to learn from the 44 years of the existence of the NYSC. We are here to see what lessons we can learn and take back with us.

“Our main aim of visiting is to get a study tour to find out from you what have been your challenges, successes and what we should do to make our youth service stronger and gain success within a short time.

“We have researched a lot from countries that have voluntary youth service after graduation from the university and I am proud to say that Nigeria emerged the best example in Africa.

“Our youth service has only been in existence for a year now so it is still very new. We want to try and see that we do not make mistakes so that we can be assured of its success,” Kamara said.

Members of the delegation included Prof. David Koroma, the Chairman, National Youth Service (NYS) Board, Sierra Leone, and Dr Mohammed Bah, the Executive Secretary, NYS.

Others are Mr Ibrahim Kamara, the Deputy Executive Director, NYS; Mr Charles M, Director Youth, Ministry of Youths, Sierra Leone; and Mrs Marie Kamara, the UN Liason Officer to the Ministry of Youths.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has cautioned prospective applicants seeking employment into the service not to pay any money to any person or group of persons.

NIS Comptroller-General, Mr Muhammad Babandede, gave the warning in a statement signed by the service Spokesperson, Mr Sunday James, on Monday in Abuja.

On Monday, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Fire Service, NIS and Nigeria Prisons Service boards announced approval for recruitment.

Babandede has now told applicants to follow instructions given in the advertorials.

He said: “the public is hereby advised to strictly follow the instructions as specified in the advertisement.

“Applicants must shun every request for monetary inducement by any person or group of persons, either in person or through fake online accounts.”

Babandede also urged the public to visit the NIS official online account —www.immigration.gov.ng for further information and clarification.

According to a statement made available to the press by Fabian Benjamin, JAMB Head of Information, there is no bill anywhere on the board’s 2017 UTME performance.

“We urge candidates to disregard all funny connotations online on their results as the board will not contemplate doing all that is being speculated as that will negate the ethics of an examination body as critical as JAMB.”

“There is no bill anywhere, not even a motion has been tabled before the two chambers of the National Assembly on the board’s 2017 UTME performance.” The statement read.

Benjamin added that the major concern of JAMB had always been to ensure that cheating during and after examination were reduced to zero level, and this, he said, the board had substantially achieved.

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, yesterday in Lagos said that out of the 1,648,429 million candidates writing the ongoing UTME, the results of 1,048,914 have been released.

This was just as he also announced the extension of JAMB’s portal for registration, adding that it will finally close its registration portal on 28th May.

He said that in addition to the 1,048,914 results that have been released, over 30,406 results are also ready for upload before midnight today.

He said: “As at today, 1,648, 429 are taking our examination and we have released the result of 1,048,914. That is the result we have released up till yesterday.

“On the first day, we released the results of Sunday because anything you call CBT, the results are ready, but for environmental reasons, we do not release the results immediately.

“That is to ensure we go through the CCTV camera to see whether there are report of malpractice and prevent the situation whereby those who do not pass become agitated at the CBT centres.

“We have released the results of Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and we are going to release today’s result before 12 midnight. This morning, the results of 30,046 will be release.

Asked the performances of candidates results so far, he said: “The candidates have not done badly from the results released so far.” As soon as the last person finished writing the last paper today, we will upload additional over 30,406 results before 12 midnight today.”

Oloyede, also disclosed that JAMB’s portal for registration has not closed, adding that it will finally close its registration portal on 28th May. He said that he got the mandate from the Senate few weeks ago to increase the UTME registration period by one month, which according to him will elapse on 28th of May. “As I speak, we have registered additional 1,100 candidates,” he added.

Oloyede who disclosed during this during his visit to one of the CBT Centres in Lagos said that in 2018, fingers print may no longer be required.

He explained: We have now been able to catch those people who registered two people with the same names. The impersonator and the one being impersonated went in collaboration with the CBT centres after screening them.”

He said: “Both the impersonator and one being impersonated used each fingers.

While, the impersonator used two thumb fingers, the impersonated used eight fingers to register.

Thus, we have ten registered fingers and the ten fingers were not from one person.

“In some centres, when we tested all their fingers, we discovered that they were impersonator who had used two of their fingers thumbs in both hands.

“By next year, we may not use finger print, there are other technologies whereby with the technology, everything about the candidate is captured. We need to move in that direction.”

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed the report that the scheme has been scrapped, describing it as a malicious and mischievous rumour.

Here are 10 Things to Do after You Get Your Call-Up Letter

1. All You Need to Print your call up letter is the email you used in Registering at the NYSC portal and your Password. (I doubt if NYSC will send your call-up to your email).

2. Print the Original copy, (twice) make 5 photocopies as you would need to submit some duplicates at camp. (MAKE Photocopies of All your documents because it’s expensive in camps)

3. Rearrange your documents. What you need to take with you are : CALLUP LETTER, GREEN CARD, STATEMENT OF RESULT OR ORIGINAL CERTIFICATE, PASSPORT, ID CARD and others
NUMBER, please make sure your statement of result carries your school stamp and not a fake one.

4. Put all these documents in a water resistant file and seal properly. DO NOT LAMINATE YOUR GREEN CARD OR CALLUP LETTER.

5. Pack few stuffs please. Don’t give yourself unnecessary stress. Basic things to pack should be YOUR WHITES,WHITE SHORT,WHITE TENNIS SHOES, TOUCH,TORCHLIGHT, MOSQUITO NET,ONE OR TWO CASUAL WEARS, SOAP, ANTI-MALARIA DRUGS, BED SPREAD, DETERGENT, CREAM, POWER BANK, CASH AND ATM CARD, SOCKS, ETC…

You don’t need much loads. Because after camp, you are given 3 weeks terminal leave from Your PPA. Which you are go home and get set for your primary assignment.

6. Find people you are posted to same state, state create a WhatsApp group and talk about when to Leave and how to go. If anyone suits your schedule you both can meet up at the Bustop and move.

That is why this group is created. Once you get your call-up letter. Indicate the state you are posted to here and meet up with people of same state.

7. PLEASE check your date of deployment very well to avoid mistakes.

8. Safety, a lot of Corp members have gone due to road accident and the likes. You really don’t have to blame NYSC. Our transportation system is messed up. Look carefully at the bus you are to Travel with and know the kind of driver that is going to drive you and MOST ESPECIALLY PRAY TOO. Prayer always work.

9. Be happy and positive. The country economy cannot decide your happiness. You don’t have to think about thousands of unemployed youths out there. You do not have to think about your past. This is another phase of your life and you should face it with courage. You are a man. This is your chance to prove you can be a positive change.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has released call-up letters for 2017 ‘Batch A’ stream I prospective corps members.

The corps, in a message on its website, urged prospective corps members to proceed to print their call-up letters.

Online printing of call-up letters is expected to take place between May 18 and 23.

The NYSC has also instructed PMCs to carry out immunisation for meningitis before heading to camp.

“2017 Batch A PCMs are encouraged as a matter of priority to be immunized against cerebrospinal meningitis before reporting to camp,” said a statement on its website.

The NYSC had in a recent statement informed PMCs about the modalities for printing their call-up letters.

It reads in part: “Prospective Corps members are expected to log on to the NYSC portal to commence printing of their call-up letters from 18th may to 23rd may 2017.

“While those who did not subscribe for online printing should start collection of Call-up letters from 18th may from their various institutions of graduation.

“When you eventually receive your call-up letter either via email or institution, make sure you read it very well, at least three (3) times before printing it out. Those that will receive via email are in better advantage because they have the opportunity to print their call-up letters, anywhere, any time and many times.

“They cannot lose their Call-up letters because since they have the opportunity to print and re-print many copies at any time.

“Those that will receive via institution are in less advantage. Well, we advise you to guide your call-up letter with your life if you’re in this category. If anything happened to it, no more, you cannot retrieve it. You must go to camp with your call-up letter which must be in coloured format.”

Nonwa Gbam Tai Orientation Camp is located in Tai local government of Rivers State, where you will be camped for the first 3 weeks (21 days). It has a very good and serene environment, about 30 minutes’ drive from Port Harcourt City.

REGISTRATION

Your registration starts right from the main entrance where you will be checked for dangerous and sharp objects, then you will proceed to the pavilion where you will be allocated into a hall, afterwards you will proceed to the dinner hall/store to possess a mattress and get a bunk in the hall you were allocated to you.

You are expected to keep all your luggage’s safe in the hostel before you proceed to the camp clinic where you will check if you are fit or not fit before you will be allowed to register.

After passing the clinic stage, you are to proceed to the registration hall with all your print-out and necessary documents where you will be duly registered as a prospective corp member, before you proceed to the church hall beside the registration hall for all your camp accessories (khaki, White Short and so on).

A Bill seeking to provide for free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills by youth corps members has passed second reading in the Senate.

The Bill which is titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the National Youth Service Corps Act 2004”, is aimed at equipping corps members with entrepreneurial skills to help them after service year.

Sponsor of the Bill, Senator Stella Oduah, emphasised that the period of the NYSC is to prepare Nigerian youths to rediscover their passions, talents, and skills.

According to the Bill, the NYSC service year will now be split into two, with the first part to be directed towards gaining experience in the work environment while the second part would be geared towards free and compulsory acquisition of vocational skills.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, urged his colleagues to remain committed to overhauling the NYSC that suit the present day Nigeria.

“When the NYSC was introduced, the focus was integration and strengthening of Nigeria’s unity but it is clear now that there is need to incorporate vocational skills acquisition to equip our young graduates for better service to the nation and to themselves. I thank Senator Stella Oduah for sponsoring this Bill,” Saraki said.

The new Bill is seeking to insert a new section 5 to provide for a compulsory vocational training for corps members.

Other goals and benefits of the Bill include, securing the future of corps members through the acquisition of relevant skills for business success, learning in a conducive environment with state of the art teaching materials to maximise the service year.

It would also provide access to several funding windows towards starting or improving one’s business, and learning to develop a winning, investor ready business plan, among others.

Teach For Nigeria (TFN), an NGO, said that it would partner the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) by recruiting 60 outstanding graduates as teachers during the one-year compulsory service.

Miss Folawe Omikunle , Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of TFN told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the recruited graduates would be from the country’s tertiary institutions and from the Diaspora.

The CEO said this was coming under a two-year fellowship and leadership development programme initiated by her NGO.

Omikunle said that the graduates who would be recruited from all fields of studies; would on recruitment, be addressed as fellows.

She said that the fellows would work as full time teachers in some of the understaffed public schools in Ogun and Lagos States after TFN would have trained them.

According to her, the NGO will be paying them monthly stipends in addition to their normal monthly allowances from the NYSC.

“It will be recruiting 60 fellows out of the no fewer than 4,000 graduates that had applied."

“The 60 fellows will teach in public and low income schools,’’ Omikunle said.
She said that the objective of TFN was to bridge the education inequality in the country.

According to her, the TFN-collaboration with the NYSC becomes necessary because some outstanding graduates who had studied abroad are applying for recruitment by the TFN for the scheme.

She said that such graduates could not be employed because they had not participated in the NYSC one-year compulsory programme.

“We are already talking with the NYSC officials on how one year out of the two years such fellows will spent with us can be used as service year."

“This is because our programme is in line with the policy of the NYSC that encourages most corps members to teach in schools during the service year,’’ she said.

THE Bank of Industry (BoI) said it has revised its interest rates on loans for members of the National Youth Service Corp, NYSC, under its Graduate Entrepreneurship Fund (GEF) programme to zero per cent from nine percent as part of its move to encourage youth entrepreneurship.

The GEF scheme being implemented by the bank in partnership with the NYSC Directorate, currently in the second edition, has recorded over N262.9 million disbursements to 177 successful candidates.

BoI, in a statement, said the loans at zero per cent interest became effective from May 01, 2017, adding that existing GEF loans and those to be disbursed from that date will require repayment of only the principal amounts, while the 177 candidates that have been financed under the scheme will be required to pay loan interest that accrued up to 30th April, 2017.

The bank noted that as at March 31, 2017, it approved N583.8 million for disbursements for entrepreneurs under the scheme, adding that the gesture was motivated by the larger part of the 177 candidates who have exhibited strong dedication to their businesses and have demonstrated unusual commitment to repayment of their loans, including the nine percent interest.

“The Bank of Industry is highly delighted in the outcome of its investment in these young Nigerians. The bank firmly believes that entrepreneurship is a critical pathway to resolving the worrisome unemployment problem in the country. Hence, the bank desires to ensure the businesses that have been created through the GEF programme remain sustainable with progressive migration from small businesses to medium and eventually to large enterprises.

It is believed that this gesture will further attract young Nigerians that are undergoing their one-year compulsory National youth service to embrace entrepreneurship by participating in the GEF programme. It is pertinent to reiterate that the zero per cent interest charge on loans only applies to the GEF programme which is implemented in partnership with NYSC Directorate,” the bank stated.

The British government has announced a special service for Nigerians which enables them get their UK visa on the same day of application.

British High Commissioner, Mr. Paul Arkwright disclosed this on Monday at the 40th anniversary of the Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce, NBCC, in Lagos.

Mr Arkwright while speaking at the event said that the British embassy has made provision for visa applicants in Nigeria to get their visa on the same day or within five days of application.

He noted that the embassy as part of its special services has reduced the maximum turnaround time for all classes of visa application to 15 days.

“We have introduced a same day visa service – at a cost – for visas in Nigeria.

“We have also introduced a service that means you get a visa within five days, at a lower cost than the same day process.

“Our turnaround time for all other visas is 15 days.

“The key thing, however, is that all visitors to the UK, whether they are from Nigeria or anywhere else, must respect the law and the length of time their visa says they can stay in the UK.

“In 2016, around 140,000 Nigerians applied for visas to the UK. Of those that applied for student visas, 90 percent were successful.

“For those that applied for other visas, around 70 percent were successful.

“There are as many as 250,000 Nigerian nationals or dual Nigerian-British nationals living in the UK at the moment.

“Some claim the total Nigerian diaspora in the UK is well over a million. We want Nigerians to come to the UK. They come to do business, to study, to see family and to invest in our economy.”

Nigerian government on Monday said the number of days required for registration of new businesses in Nigeria has been reduced from 10 to 2, courtesy of a reform agenda of Buhari administration.

Also, prospective business owners can now search on Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) portal (www.cac.gov.ng) to avoid duplication of names and prevent selection of prohibited names, while company registration no longer requires lawyers as it is now optional for SMEs to hire lawyers to prepare registration documents.

These are among highlights of a report presented at a Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council, PEBEC, at the Presidential Villa, marking the end of the 60-day Action Plan on Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria reforms.
The Council established by President Muhammadu Buhari is chaired by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

However, Tuesday’s meeting was chaired by Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi.

Others in attendance were Foreign Affairs Ministers Geoffrey Onyeama, Minister of State for Industry Trade & Investment Aisha Abubakar, and her counterpart in Budget & National Planning Zainab Ahmed. Other government dignataries at the meeting included the Head of Service, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, and several heads of MDAs.

The report was presented by Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Trade & Investment.

According to the report, CAC has introduced single incorporation form (CAC1.1) to save time and reduce costs while the agency has introduced document upload interface on its website to enable e-submission of registration documents.

Other aspects of the reforms now actualized in the last 60 days include the Integrated FIRS e-payment solution into CAC portal to enable e-stamping while the reform empowers CAC internal lawyers to certify company incorporation forms and conduct statutory declaration of compliance for a fixed fee of N500.

According to the report, the PEBEC listed “Dealing with construction permits, Getting electricity, Registering Property, Getting Credit and Paying Taxes,” as some of the areas where the council has recorded progress in the past 60 days.

The report also highlighted the completed reforms on the “Entry and Exit of People,” indicator which includes Simplified Visa-on-Arrival process, Infrastructural improvements at the Abuja airport, and the new Immigration Regulation 2017.

It also indicated that the completed reforms are being closely monitored to ensure diligent implementation with minimal disruption while pending reforms are being escalated to ensure completion in the coming weeks.

Maintaining faith and confidence » in God can be challenging.

This is because we are constantly plagued with doubts, wondering if He hears us or listens to our prayers.
