Sometime in May of 2016, Lagos State, alongside Enugu State and hundreds of other cities around the world was nominated by the Rockefeller Foundation in the 100 Resilient Cities project.

The project is dedicated to helping cities around the world become more resilient to the physical, social and economic challenges that are a growing part of the 21st century. And only two days ago, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode received the Certificate of Admission of the State as one of the 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) in the world.

According to him, it was a starting point and a positive partnership that would help the State address the challenges of urban planning, transport gridlock, environment and modern infrastructure.

Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode speaking while receiving the certificate at the event which took place at Renaissance Hotel, GRA Ikeja , Lagos said that this recognition was significant in showing the government’s efforts, coupled with that of relevant stakeholders, geared towards building and sustaining a globally competitive state is noticed and applauded on an international scale. “This is historic in the annals of the state,” he added.

The Governor said it was satisfying to see that in spite of the obstacles faced by the people of Lagos state in areas such as transportation, security, climate change, the surge of the Atlantic, flooding, unemployment, population density as well as pressure on physical and social infrastructure, growth of slums and a huge housing deficit, Lagos remained progressive, true to the spirit of excellence and resilience.

He said: “We acknowledge these challenges and needs; and now as a member of the 100 resilient Cities of the World, we have a platform to compare notes with cities who have similar experiences and create innovative and mitigating strategies.”

“Lagos is currently home to about 23 million inhabitants with an estimated 86 people moving into Lagos every hour. This creates challenges of managing a daily increase in human and vehicular movement,” he said.

Governor Ambode further said that resilience had always been part of the Lagos story, pointing that in spite of its small size geographically, its economic power and population size is staggering.

“We have initiated many interventions all over the State to shorten road travel time and we are in talks with the Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) to introduce rail transportation in the Ikoyi-Lekki corridor. We have also engaged in massive road construction and opening-up of our rural communities, continuous clearance of drainages and the upgrade and construction of Primary Health Care Centers (PHCs). Our objective is to make every community in Lags economically liveable and stem rural-urban flight.

“The ocean surge is a huge challenge and the Lagos State Government in partnership with notable investors have invested in the development of Eko Atlantic City to not only contain the ocean surge but to deliver a new city which will be a future financial, commercial and tourism centre,” he said.

President of 100 Resilient Cities, Mr. Michael Berkowitz said out of the over thousands of entries received and a tedious selection process, Lagos was chosen for its “innovative leadership, infrastructural strides and influential status not just in Africa but in the world”.

This award reflects the sentiments of Jumia Travel CEO Paul Midy, who only a while back reiterated that despite the recession Nigeria (Lagos) is still a great place to do business.

With this Resilience Award, it is believed that Lagos state has taken a giant stride in cementing its position as a global city of the future, attracting investment, bringing people from all over the world, and with it the blossoming of the hotel and hospitality industry which all players from hotel owners to tour guides would no doubt stand to benefit from.

The persistent losing streak on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, NSE, was halted, yesterday, as investors gained N33.9 billion propelled by positive activity in Nigerian Breweries Plc, Dangote Cement Plc and Forte Oil Plc.

This came as the NSE launched Lagos Chapter of Nigerians in the Square Mile (NISM). NISM, established in 2008, is a membership organisation and think tank made up of outstanding individuals in the financial and professional services sectors in the City of London and has become a quietly and increasingly influential organisation advancing the interests of Nigeria and Nigerians in the world’s leading financial centre.

At the close of the day’s trading session, the market capitalisation of all listed equities rose to N8.697 trillion from N8.774 trillion on Tuesday, representing 0.4 per cent increase.

Similarly, the All Share Index, ASI, rose by 0.4 per cent from 25,460.45 points to 25,130.26 points. Performance across sectors was mixed as three indices recorded price gains while two declined.

The consumer goods sector rebounded from a six-day bearish run, adding 1.7 per cent as investors swooped on shares of Nigerian Breweries Plc which rose by 4.2 per cent and International Breweries Plc that appreciated by 4.7 per cent.

Similarly, the industrial goods sector witnessed 0.3 per cent increase on the back of gains in Dangote Cement Plc that recorded 0.6 per cent returns. On the flipside, the banking sector decreased by 1.1 per cent as a result of negative disposition to shares of Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Zenith International Bank Plc and Access Bank Plc, which went down by 2.0 per cent, 0.9 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively, while the insurance sector closed 0.5 per cent lower on the back of 4.5 per cent and 0.3 per cent losses in Continental Reinsurance Plc and Custodian and Allied Insurance Plc respectively.

Speaking at the launch of NISM yesterday, Oscar Onyema, CEO, NSE, said that the establishment of NISM in Lagos would provide a better link that works for Nigeria by connecting the best of two cities – London and Lagos.

He noted that the link would connect leaders in finance and commerce in Lagos with those in London, while creating a powerful alliance of the best thought leaders in both cities.

He assured that the Exchange is open to opportunities that would create durable wealth for all legitimate investors, adding that it is the reason the Exchange has championed the listing and trading of multiple products, including equities, Exchange Traded Funds, ETFs, bonds, Real Estate Investment Trusts,REITs, and have developed a strong market data business to provide timely information to investors through multiple channels.

Osun state police Command has paraded two suspects in connection with the murder of a female Student of the Osun State University late last year.

One of the suspects Elijah Oyebode according to the commissioner of police Fimihan Adeoye, has confessed to killing the victim and dumping her remains somewhere in Iragbiji, Boripe Local government Area of Osun state.

Adebisi Rofiat Damilola, a four hundred level student of Chemistry Education was found dead on December 22nd 2016, after boarding a vehicle from ipetu-jesha where her school campus is located.

The suspect, Elijah who was the driver of the commercial vehicle, claimed the deceased willingly followed him home, after agreeing to his advances.

"I toasted her and she agreed to follow me home, which she did. After having sexual intercourse with her, I went to the bathroom to clean up only to return to the room and found her dead"

"I thought she was pretending, so I bite on the thigh, but all efforts to bring her back to life was futile. Later that night, at 11 0clock when everybody had slept off, I switched the security light of the house off, drove her corpse off, and abandoned it along Ayekanle Egbede Iragbiji road"

Elijah also said he did everything by himself with no help from a second person.

He disclosed that he only sold the deceased I-phone 5 mobile to the second suspect paraded by the police, Yusuf Ajibade.

Commissioner Adeoye said, investigations are still on going and assured that the suspects would be arraigned in court very soon.

Paraded along Elijah and Yusuf, were a middle aged man Ismaila Afolabi for allegedly killing his client Saheed Afolabi over land matter, and a 32 year old Kazeem Ayoola for the murder of his biological mother of 85year, whom he claimed was responsible for his misfortunes.

While many are gearing up to complete registration for UTME 2017 and prepare academically for the examinations, here are some vital updates they must keep in mind:

1. Registration has not started
It is vital that we begin with this, because many have put up posts that the registration has begun. However, in his latest discussion with the press, the JAMB registrar stated clearly that registration has not commenced , but will commence soon. UTME 2017.

Therefore, ignore any other news to the contrary as we will be breaking the news, when registration commences.

2. 1.7 million candidates are expected
In 2016, the number of candidates that registered for the exam was: 1,561,443, this year about 200,000 more people are expected.

The registrar of JAMB, Prof Ishaq Oloyede himself gave the figure while speaking with students and other bodies . This means that you need to ensure you begin registration as early as possible to get a good centre and avoid been caught in last minute rush.

3. Mock UTME to be conducted
This is also good news for those who are taking the exam for the first time as it will help them have a feel of what it is like, before the pressure of the real thing.

Plans are in place for a mock UTME and this might explain the delay in beginning the sales of the examination forms. So if you are preparing, start your preparations now, so you can do well in both the mock and the real deal.

4. CBT Centres
As the number of expected candidates has increased the board also has plans in the works for more Computer Based Testing (CBT) Centres in order to the make examination exercise far better.

Since there is only one week to satisfy, 1.7 million students, it is totally understandable that more centres will be brought into play.

5. There Will Be CCTV
Another key feature of the 2017 UTME that students need to keep in mind is that cheating and any other form of examination malpractice is really frowned upon.

To ensure this is enforced, the guideline for CBT centres include: The adoption of CCTV cameras for all of them. This means one thing, the exams will be closely monitored.

6. Technology Will Be Deployed
Also, technology will play a big role in this year’s exam. This is the type of hall to expect as a UTME 2017 candidate:

A single hall containing 250 functional desktop or laptop computer systems with extra 25 as backups.

The computers must be minimum 15 inch screens and must be connected to robust computer server with capacity to carry a minimum of 250 systems concurrently.

7. Validity Duration
Another wonderful news for students is that unlike previous years, the result they get from this year’s exam will now be valid for 3 years and not one year as it was previously. The Nigerian Senate passed the extended validity period into law on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

8. Harmony of timetables
Lastly, the organizers of the major examinations, including JAMB met to avoid a clash in schedules and in order to have a harmonized timetable. An agreement was reached at the national headquarters of the Board in Abuja on Tuesday, January 24 , after a meeting with National Examination Council (NECO), West African Examination Council (WAEC) and National Business and Technical Examination (NABTEB) to harmonize the timetable.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Monday expressed its displeasure at employers conniving with absentee corps members to evade service. Mr Benjamin Omotade, the NYSC coordinator in Delta said this during the passing out of Batch B stream 11 corps members.

He said that employers in the state should join hands with the NYSC to imbue these young Nigerians with virtues of honesty and uprightness for the sake of their future and the country.

He also solicited the cooperation of employers to provide an enabling environment for corps members to discharge their duties optimally. Omotade told the employers of corps members that it was their responsibilities to provide basic accommodation and transportation to corps members posted to them for their one-year primary assignments.

In the alternative, employers of labour were supposed to pay the coprs members commensurate allowances in lieu of such facilities during the period, he said.

Also, Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta in his address said that the government was aware of its responsibilities to the NYSC and the corps members. Okowa, represented by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Mr Jude Sinebe, said that government would continue to do everything within its limited resources to live up to its expectation.

He advised employers of corps members to accept and make proper use of the services of all corps members posted to them.

The governor also advised all local governments’ chairmen, traditional rulers, community leaders and security agencies to take the security of all corps members seriously.

Okowa said that all should be mindful of the fact that our environment must be peaceful and conducive for these youths who had converged on Delta to contribute their quota to the development of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the management of the NYSC recently said that there was no plan to scrap the scheme.

It said that it had helped to bridge cultural barriers among the ethnic groups across the country since it was established on May 22, 1973 by the military administration of General Yakubu Gowon.

The Director General of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Joseph Ari has hinted of plans by the agency to train over 500 youths in 18 states of the federation on skill acquisition.

The DG said this when his four-month old management team paid a courtesy visit to the head office of Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation newspaper titles.

According to him, arrangement has reached advanced stage for the takeoff of the fifth phase of the National Industrial Skills Development Program (NISDP) in 18 states of the federation to facilitate the mass training programme, adding that the trainees will be trained by ITF per state.

The programme, which is the initiative of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), ITF and Bank Of Industry (BoI) under the Ministry of Commerce Trade and Investment, would help youths to become employer of labour thereby reducing unemployment in the country.

“Let us see how you can help us rebuild the core of our training structure. Our goal is to train young people who we call ‘Agro-preneurs’ and support them with credit,” said Ari.

The ITF boss added that the visit to The Nation was part of ITF’s Operation Reach Out programmes geared towards human capacity development in the country.

He also hinted of plans to partner with National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to train corps members during their one year programme in any skill they want “So that after the programme they don’t need to seek for job under government but can be employer of labour as we are doing everything to make sure we reduce unemployment in this country.”

Ari further said the organisation had also introduced the graduate re-skilling programme aimed at training 500 graduates of engineering and technology with vocational and entrepreneurial skills.

“The Industrial Trust Fund, in its Graduate Re-skilling Programme, will train 500 graduates of Technology and Engineering with vocational and entrepreneurial skills from each of the six geo-political zones. We are reviewing the ITF/DVT, that is, German Chamber of Crafts and Commerce Dual, to train apprentices in line with German Dual System, equipping and retooling of existing skills training centres and procurement of Mobile Training Units,’’ he said.

Responding, the General Manager, Vintage Press Limited, Mr. Soji Omotunde thanked the management of ITF for the visit and promised the company’s commitment to support them in reducing unemployment in the country.

“There is a renewed effort to use the mass training programme to aid poverty eradication, job creation and effective diversification of the economy as envisioned by the federal government and will not succeed if Nigerians are not skilled,” he said.

​As a child, you are spoon-fed everything. What food is, what life is, what respect is, what to do, what to think, how to act, everything is taught to you.

These teachings become fewer and eventually stop as you grow into an adult because you are expected to know or figure things out on your own.

Thus, people are left to their own devices, to figure out what life is really about.

For some, life becomes about making money, building big houses, driving fancy cars, while society teaches the girl child that life is simply about getting married and raising kids.

However, in my short time on earth, thanks to the Bible, God, and the amazing people He has put in my path, I am slowly learning and becoming certain that love is the sole reason for our existence. (Matthew 22:36-40)

I think we are put on earth to show people the God (love) in us.

We are planted here to provide a different perspective, to inspire and motivate through our words, and actions.

Think about how much we can change others with nothing but a smile, or a hug.

Love does not come from religion, love comes from God, from knowing, at least, trying to knowing Him.

1 John 4: 7-8 says, "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love."

Verse 16 goes on to say, "And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him."

Love is not only only tied to sex, or family, love just is.

The kind of love » that we are put on earth to give is simply unconditional.

It's choosing to smile at people, even things are not well with you. It's putting others above ourselves. It's being selfless.

In loving like this, we fulfill our purpose on earth because we get to show others that God exist.

1 John 4: 9-12 adds, " In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has seen God at any time. If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love has been perfected in us."

His existence is further proven in cases where the person is not even religious, yet the God (love) in them is still seen.

It does not take anything to love, only love requires is a smile, a hug, a conversation and it blossoms.

The next time you are feeling down, wondering if your existence means something, hold on to the knowledge that love, not material things is the reason for our time on earth.

Take pride in the knowledge that you have fulfilled your purpose when you are nice to a stranger, or respond with kind words to a mean person.

By simply living the way God intended, loving Him first, then ourselves and our neighbours, as much as we love ourselves » , we have fulfilled our purpose on earth.

The National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) says it will partner with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other commercial banks to provide soft loans to corps members across the country.

The Sokoto State Coordinator of the scheme, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, disclosed this on Saturday at the permanent orientation camp in Wamakko, headquarters of Wamakko Local Government.

Abubakar spoke during the NYSC cultural carnival and exhibition of wares produced by the corps members under the 2016, batch”B” stream.

He said that the other collaborating banks are the Bank of Industry, Bank of Agriculture and Heritage Bank.

Abubakar said that the corps members had gone through two weeks training on various skills, saying the training would continue throughout their service year.

”They have been trained on various skills like ICT, film making, photography, fashion design, tie and dye, cosmetology, brick making, interlocking and food processing, as well as preservation among others.

”Each of the beneficiaries may get between N3m and N10m to enable them establish their own small scale businesses.

”This will reduce unemployment, poverty and the post service trauma of searching for white collar jobs,” he said.

Abubakar said that the loans would be advanced to the corps members through the scheme’s Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Department of the scheme.

According to him, with the loans, corps members would be transformed into self employed citizens, while others may become employers of labour.

On the carnival, Abubakar stated that it replaced the defunct endurance trek due to some emerging security challenges in the country.

”The carnival is aimed at boosting unity, cultural and ethno-religious integration.

”It also helps to bring out the hidden talents of the corps members, as well as explore their business potential,” Abubakar said.

Newsmen report that the highlight of the ceremony was an exhibition of the various products produced by the corps members.

​AS part of its effort to boost the creative economy, Nigeria’s developmental bank, Bank of Industry (BoI) has organised a two-day masterclass for fashion designers in Lagos and Abuja on February 8 and February 10 respectively.

At the Lagos segment of the event which held at the Oriental Hotel, Lekki, on Wednesday February 8, top fashion designers who attended the session were excited to interact with Mercedes Gonzalez, the famous international fashion strategy and brand development expert who was brought in by the bank to help sharpen the skills of Nigerian entrepreneurs operating in the various segments of the fashion value chain.

The initiative is also a testimony of the company’s listening ears, going by demand from the Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN), urging the management of the bank to provide training, build capacity and guidance for budding entrepreneurs in the sector.

President of FADAN, Mrs. Funmi Ajila-Ladipo, had made the request during the launch of a special fund for the fashion industry recently, as part of the bank’s support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).

Organised in partnership with Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investments, the intervention in the fledgling fashion industry is seen as remedy for the current economic recession.

The session began with an all-inclusive exhibition of made-in-Nigeria goods, showcasing the ingenuity of Nigerians in making dresses, beads, hats, shoes and other gorgeous fashion items.

It was exciting to several fashion enthusiasts that the session conducted by the world’s renowned Mercedes Gonzalez, from America, was free of charge.

Speaking at the event, Acting Managing Director, Mr. Waheed Olagunju, said the project, “is to ensure that we sharpen the skills of our entrepreneurs in the textile and apparels company value chain such that they can be able to export and access international market especially the US market, while also taking advantage of our huge population.”

Olagunju said there are a lot of people who like clothes that are made in Nigeria but are unable to meet their demand because of certain limitations.

“So we want them to realise their potentials by bringing such an international strategist and expert and as we can see they are following the presentation and enjoying it and as a financial institution, when they pass through processes like this, they becoming substantially briefed such that when we lend to them, chances of payment are higher. And it only when we lend to them that they pay us with interest which is when my salary is paid because our customers pay our salaries. That is why they say customer is king. So it’s good to help our customers to help ourselves,” Olagunju said.

​Relocation and redeployment of corp members is a thing that is open to any corp member that is willing to take it. NYSC has made it in such a way that if any prospective corp member has genuine reasons why he/she should not serve in the state they have been posted to, such corper has the right to request for a change of state. And that’s exactly what is called “NYSC Redeployment/Relocation”. But mind you, such reasons must be genuine and reasonable.

There are only two ways through which you can apply for Relocation and get approved afterwards.

1. Applying on Camp: One of the major ways, and of course, the initial way of applying for Nysc Relocation and Redeployment is applying for it on camp.

During the 21 days Orientation course on camp, interested corp members will be given the opportunity to apply for Relocation at the 2nd week on camp.

A form will be given out to any interested corper to fill. This form will require, among other things, the corper to state the reason he/she wants a relocation and also give reasonable evidences to back up any excuse given. Together with the form, you will also be asked to submit an application letter.

2. Applying Online After Camp: Before, it’s very difficult or rather impossible to get a Relocation approval after camping is over. But now, it has being made possible and easier to apply for relocating by simply allowing corp members to apply online even after camp is over. Some believes it’s not possible to get approval for relocation until 3 months after camp. But i will tell you, that’s also not true. You can apparently get approved for relocation even after 2 weeks of application. So, how do we go about the online application for Nysc Relocation;

1. Visit the Relocation portal: that is the Nysc official website

2. Sign in with your email and password; same as the ones you earlier used in registering on the portal.

3. Click on “Relocation”

4. Fill in your details appropriately into the fields provided .

The Central Bank of Nigeria said on Tuesday that the monthly supply of dollars at its disposal had dropped to between $600m and $700m.

While the bank had a stock of up to $3bn monthly in 2013 and 2014, it said the forex scarcity that hit the country lately had left it with roughly $700m.

The Deputy Governor, CBN, Mrs. Sarah Alade, who appeared before an ad hoc committee of the House of Representatives in Abuja, explained that the forex scarcity was the reason why the apex bank was unable to meet all demands, particularly those coming from importers of petroleum products.

The ad hoc committee, which is headed by a member from Imo State, Mr. Nnana Igbokwe, is conducting a public hearing on the review of the pump price of petrol from N145 to N70.04 as proposed by the House.

The committee had summoned the Governor of the CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, to respond to allegation by importers that the bank was denying them access to forex.

Emefiele was also to explain how International Oil Companies got involved in the sale of foreign exchange to importers and petroleum marketers in the country.

But Alade, who represented the governor, told the committee that it was impossible to meet every forex demand in the light of the present scarcity.

She said, “Things are not the way they used to be.

There is a shortage of foreign exchange. In 2013 to 2014, the Federal Government used to get $2bn to $3bn monthly, and the CBN in the interbank market sold about 30 per cent of that. Seventy per cent came from foreign investors.

“Today, we get $600m or $700m. Nothing comes in from interbank market; $1.5m is sold every day and $1bn was done in December to clear matured Letters of Credit. It’s not the way it used to be.”

The Minster of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, responded to the question on why the IOCs were involved in the sale of forex to importers.

He stated that it was an arrangement to ease supply to the importers, who received between 35 per cent and 45 per cent of the available forex.

The minister described it as an “intervention scheme,” which was coordinated by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation and the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency to ensure that beneficiaries were screened after duly applying for the forex.

Kachikwu added that the pressure on forex by fuel importers could reduce if the country refurbished all its refineries.

He stated that the government’s plan was to make the refineries fully functional and produce around eight million of the 20 million litres of daily petrol intake.

“By 2019, we should be able to exit completely the importation of petroleum products in this country. This has consistently served as a target for this government so that by December 2018, the NNPC must be able to deliver on some of the terms given them, one of which is to reduce petroleum products’ importation by 60 per cent,” he said.

Having depreciated in value to N500 to the dollar at the parallel market, the value of the naira appreciated to N498 to the dollar, the value it had been trading for weeks or weeks, even as external reserves rose to $28.28 billion the highest in the year highest in a year.

The naira however remained stable at N305.25 to the dollar at the interbank market, on the website of the Association of Bureau de Change Operators; the naira was quoted at N315.38 to the dollar.

Demand for the greenback grew and the Central Bank of Nigeria rationed dollar supply, having sold $660 million in 3- and 5- month currency forwards at an auction aimed at clearing a backlog of dollar demand. Traders however said the dollar sale was not enough to satisfy the market.

Data on the website of the apex bank showed that the nation’s external reserves has risen by 7.89 per cent since the beginning of the year.

Traders said while the apex bank has been selling dollars on the official market to support the naira, dollar shortages were causing the naira to weaken on the black market.

Head of Africa Research at Standard Chartered Bank, Razia Khan said, “Despite rising foreign exchange reserves, it is the amount of forex that is supplied that matters.

​Comrade Oyinkan Olasanoye, first female President, Association of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), in this interview with TAIWO OMILANI insists that government policies are forcing banks to retrench staffs even as she urge the federal government to review policies that might affect the insurance and the banking sector.

What are you doing to protect the job of your members giving the fact that there are reports of mass sack especially in the banking sector as the economy continues to bite hard?

We realized that our members are losing their jobs and it has become a tripartite issue in the sense that it is no longer the fault of the employees or that of the employers, but the policy of the government. The sector we operate on is a financial sector; it is not a manufacturing sector, so the only thing we deal with is fiscal. For example, majority of the banks have been trading with Treasury Single Account (TSA). No matter the advantages of TSA, the government cannot just withdraw all their money from the banks and expect them to survive. We are trying to take a proposal to the government that if they are withdrawing their money from the banks because of TSA, why don’t they loan it back to them as an investment and at lesser interest rate, with that there is still going to be money because with the way we are going, there is no money in the system. Government is the highest spender of money and now they are not spending and the little from government parastatals and agencies that we can work on in the banks are being withdrawn to the warehouse. This is really affecting our members, majority of our employers have issues because the policy is making business difficult to run.We are tackling the issue this year by going to the government on the monetary policies and also engage our employers in order to save our jobs. It has gotten to a stage that we can no longer be shouting that banks should not retrench when the policies in place are forcing them to retrench. It is not about the government coming out that banks should not retrench, but what are they doing to make it possible for banks not to retrench. We will meet government to know what they will do for us alongside with our employers.

Are you saying TSA came at the wrong time?

What I am saying is that for every policy, there should be a human face. TSA is a very good policy for those that are overspending. For the federal government that is not directly in control of their income, TSA is perfect, but putting TSA in place is like the government is trying to throw away the baby with the birth water. That we are trying to save government expenses and income does not mean it must totally collapse the banking sector. When the government was bringing TSA, they should have considered so many things. People are saying banks are no longer doing their core business, but that they run after government investment, yes we should go into retail banking, but before we get into that stage, there must be a foundation. Things should be done gradually; the government should have considered the human factor.The government should allow the banks to take loans, do not forget that before the introduction of TSA, banks had loaned out some of these monies to individuals for some periods and in the cause of trying to get the money back, businesses will collapse.

What should be the step by step approach to manage this?

The government should have separated or divided different parastatals into different banks. For example, Skye Bank could be collecting all the TSA involving customs service and Unity Bank could be collecting that of the Nigerian Army. With this, no bank would run out of liquidity, and then may be after some time, in the course of doing this, they will know that they need to go after the masses for retail banking and combine them. Before now, ASSBIFI had been shouting, even when some policies on the banks were not professional, and the government was setting unrealistic targets for our members because once they know that your brother is the Comptroller General of Customs and Excise, you can go there, and this contributed to why bankers were not going through the system. Then you see bankers not rising through the process and professionalism. Our appraisal should be based on the target we are bringing in because most of them are now unrealistic.

What is your view on MMM despite the warnings by the CBN, Nigerians still stake their money in the ponzi scheme?

Everybody has said both the positive and the negative aspects of MMM, but my view is that MMM is of no value to the Nigerian economy because anything that is not assisting production, we don’t need it. It is like we are eating our future today, MMM is not adding any value to the country. When we set our priority on just spending without bringing anything in, such is not an investment to me.

MMM is just a matter of money changing hands. For an economy that is on recession, it is of great disadvantage to us because the money we are getting is still purchasing the same thing. If we are not careful, there will be liquidity problem.

Does it have a negative impact on the banking sector?

Yes it is. Although, the money is still within the bank. MMM does not have a face, and they use the banks to transfer money. The banking system is being used, but savings are affected because the amount somebody supposed to have saved in his own account is being transferred because the person wants a quick return on it and at the rate it is going, it will get to a stage that no other person is transferring money. That is where it is going to affect the masses. Initially, people are very smart, they are able to get their interest and their money back, but those that started late will be in for it. Now, people are now asking for help, but it is not coming. There is no way it will not affect banking sector, but it will affect individuals more than the banks.

What Is Your Blueprint For ASSBIFI?

I have been part of ASSBIFI national executive since 2007 and I have been behind the scene since 1993. I have few things to do to keep the flag of the association flying. I want this association to have more visibility and to have a cordial relationship with the government. However, some of our members have apathy for the union; they believe that the union is just there to collect their check-up dues and would not come around until they are retrenched. I don’t believe in fire brigade approach. I want the people to know what our objectives and aims are. There will be more training and seminars for our members, and we would be more innovative in the way we run the union.

Do you have any gender challenges, being the first female President?

I keep telling people that leadership or the position of ASSBIFI President is not gender sensitive. It is about who is there and your ability to deliver, the intelligence you are bringing on board, and the relationship you have. So, I have never had any challenge because of my gender. I have not had any intimidation or violence from anybody since the past 10 years. Though, I am very conscious that I operate in an African setting and if you say women first, it will always be after men and I know that in the cause of doing my job, men have cooperated with me and they have learnt to respect me and my view. I also reciprocate by respecting them. It is not about individual but superiority of argument. They call me ‘Mr. President’ because the constitution of the association says so, may be it would change before I leave.

The Joint Action Congress (JAC) of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, FUTA, Saturday, expressed concern over the National Universities Commission, NUC, rating which pushed the institution to the 15th position.

The JAC comprises the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU).

It’s Chairman, Dele Durojaiye, blamed the present leadership of the institution for the poor rating.

Speaking in Akure, Durojaiye said: “Before the assumption of office of Prof. Adebiyi Daramola as VC, FUTA was the best university of technology in Nigeria.

“But in the last NUC rating released in December, 2016. FUTA was in the 15th position.

“Many of our courses are on interim accreditation. A good example is the School of Environmental Technology with six departments where only one department (Building Technology) got full accreditation due to lack of equipment in the laboratories.

“Prof. Daramola embarked on global tours all in the name of signing MOUs which has not added any value to the university but rather, causing more harm to our foreign exchange as a nation.
“As at today, there is no single foreign student or expatriate in FUTA again unlike before.

Durojaiye asked the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, EFCC, to either clear the institution’s Vice Chancellor of alleged corrupt practices or charge him to court.

He expressed concern over the slow pace of investigation which started three months ago.

It is a common thing for corps members to avoid the SAED training during the 21 days orientation program. Many argue that the program is boring and of little help as must instructors teach corps members only the introduction to must of this skills all in an attempt to make sure the youths later sign up for the full fledged training after their orientation course.

In Katsina state some set of corps members remained in their hostel during the lecture, well

Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, is to strengthen economic regulation of all domestic airlines in 2017 as a way of checking increased cases of airlines neglecting the welfare of their staff. This is one of the 4 point agenda the agency will pursue in 2017.

Director General of the agency, Capt. Muhtar Usman, made this know while enumerating challenges, achievement and projections of the regulatory agency for the outgoing year and the new year, 2017. According to Usman ,”to sustain zero accident in aviation , reviewing and strengthening economic regulation, improve consumer protection and a continuous prioritization of training for the industry are part of the 4 point agenda for 2017”.

He also said the agency will sustain zero accidents in the aviation sector through an increase in safety oversight, wider and more regular surveillance, stringent enforcement of regulation as well as appropriate sanctions to apply.

The DG also revealed that in reviewing and strengthening economic regulation, the NCAA would ensure that the regulations were much more far-reaching and the airlines operational books will be looked into with increased regularity .

He further said the Consumer Protection Department will be motivated, and made visible at the airports. The officials would work with security agencies to stem passengers’ rage which has become a new phenomenon in the airports due to the high level of airline’s cancellations and flights delays.

Training of staff will be accorded priority this year according to the DG. He said training remains a key project of the NCAA as all staff will be trained locally or foreign where applicable to accelerate next generation of professionals and facilitate industry replacement for ageing workforce.

According to the NCAA DG, the year 2016 was a successful year in Nigeria as it recorded zero accident in the commercial transport category.

He also said ticket sales in 2015 between January and December stood at N385,909,897,028.80 billion while total passengers traffic for the year was 11,402,899 and 233,845 flights was recorded within the period.

He further said “ in 2015 airlines airlifted 42,000 passengers daily, 700 flights daily while 2016 also recorded an average of 42,000 daily and 597 flights on a daily basis. From January to September, 2016, 8,030,816 passengers were airlifted with 130,745 domestic flights. Also, foreign passengers between January and September, 2016 was 3,272,331 and with 33,099 flight. Total number of passengers was 11,344,936 and 163,833 flights in the past year”.

“From the statistics available, 2015/2016 passengers’ volume were similar with just marginal difference. 2016 had less number of flights, but, increased in passenger volume anticipated annually as we are still awaiting the last quarter 2016 data, which is under collation and authentication.”

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the Federal Government has resolved to remain with the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The Spokesman of the ministry, Dr Clement Aduku, clarified the Federal Government stand in Abuja on Wednesday.

Aduku said Nigeria’s stand on the issue as explained by the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama, has not changed.

The African Union had in January during plenary at the 28th AU Summit in Addis Ababa called for collective withdrawal of its members from the Court.

The summit argued that African countries were not fairly treated by the court, hence members should withdraw.

Onyeama said Nigeria did not subscribe to strategy adopted by AU for collective withdrawal from the ICC.

The minister said that when the issue came up during a meeting, several countries kicked against it.

According to him, Nigeria and others believe that the court has an important role to play in holding leaders accountable, hence Nigeria fully stands by it.

“Nigeria is not the only voice against it; in fact, Senegal is speaking very strongly against it. Cape Verde and other countries are also against it.

“What AU did was to set up a committee to elaborate a strategy for collective withdrawal.

“After, Senegal took the floor, Nigeria took the floor, Cape Verde and some other countries made it clear that they were not going to subscribe to that decision,” he said.

Onyeama said that a number of countries also took the floor to request for more time to study it before acceding.

He said Zambia, Tanzania, Liberia, Botswana and a host of others were not willing to withdraw from the court.

While faulting AU’s position on ICC, Onyeama stressed that each individual country willingly acceded to the 1998 Rome Statue on the setting up of the court.

“Each country freely and willingly acceded to the Treaty and not all of the members of the AU acceded; each country acceded individually, exercising its own sovereign right.
“So, if each country wants to withdraw, it has the right to do that individually.’

“AU, which was not a party to the Rome Statute that established the court, should not be developing a strategy for a collective withdrawal for something that each country entered into individually.

“Those who feel they want to withdraw should do that individually,” Onyeama said.

NAN reports that three African states in 2016 publicly declared their intention to withdraw from the court in what seemed to be a continental domino effect.

The countries are Burundi, South Africa and The Gambia, with reports that Namibia, Kenya and Uganda were contemplating withdrawing from the ICC

The court has been repeatedly criticised by African states as an inefficient, neo-colonial institution of the Western powers to try African countries.

This argument is supported by the fact that nine of the 10 situations under investigation, with three others under preliminary investigations, involve African countries.

African state, which are parties to the Rome Statute make up the biggest regional membership, comprising 34 of the 124 members.

From 2009, some African countries have called for collective withdrawal from the ICC.
