My question Is why do so many Generals go on compulsory retirement whenever a new chief of Army staff Is appointed. I have noticed that there are always a lot of Major Generals in the army. In which there are always no lieutenant Generals, except promoted to chief of army staff.

Also, from my years of observations, all the selected chief of army staff are always major generals before being promoted to Lieutenant Generals, when picked as chief of army staff.

Usually, from the position of Brigadier-General or Commodore, a lot of politics comes into promotion from there already.

COAS is a very political position. The most political even.

So, if somebody from 41RC is made COAS, like the current gentleman, it's not great to have too many Major Generals from 40RC or 39RC or earlier, who are his seniors by date of commissioning, to be under him. Even Brigadier-Generals commissioned before him may have to quietly go, too.

The political move of retiring senior officers, who should be senior to the COAS, Chief of Naval Staff or Chief of Air Staff, ever so often, every about two years at times, is very costly to national wallet. At times, up to 40 senior officers are retired together across the three services. Prematurely. Their retirement packages run into billions of Naira.
