The bolded refres,we are really in trouble in this country, like I said in my previous post we just don't look at events/scenarios holistically before proffering solution simple secondary school economic laws if applied by our government in formulating policies relating to catalisation of of battered economy will simply do the magic instead of applying all the Harvard,Oxford economic theories which can only work in developed countries in Nigeria.
Guy, in fact i will take it a step further, i wish i could go to the central bank of Nigeria and the Ministry of Finance and give every employee a copy of the book along with the President's economic council along with a copy of the book Atlas Shrugged cos it looks like none of this people understand what they are doing.

KONJIKILLER:
Good day, Nairalanders, I don't know what the females here have to say about this but I'll gladly welcome any criticism.

So there's this girl, Sharon(not her real name), I met her November last year. Ok, she's smoking hot, very attractive and absolutely smart. We got so close and told each other a lot of things, darkest secrets, and stuff she wouldn't even tell her mom. She concluded that we become best friends but deep down, I wanted more than that because I was already falling, I just didn't know what to say. Every time we talked on the phone, it was usually for more than 30minutes that my friends would be wondering if we were dating, even my close pals made fun of me that I was being friendzoned. One night in December, I called her and from the way I was talking to her, a normal girl would catch the cruise that a nigga was flirting although it wasn't obvious. After the call, I texted her that I had something to tell her but then, I just told her I'd say it later. She laughed and told me she knows what's up with me but that she's been waiting for me to spit it out. I asked how she knew, she said by behavior towards her and everything was obvious that I had these feelings for her. She added that I should be patient and not rush it, I was totally relieved, even my buddies said 'she go gree, no worry, the babe like you die'.

Guys, from that day, I've been treating this girl like a queen, buying her stuff, calling her and doing the regular things a boyfriend would do, hoping she'd eventually agree to date me. Her mom even saw the stuff I bought her, she asked her if we were dating and she told her we were talking about it. All these events happened late last year and she still hasn't made a brother happy. The last time we talked about it was on the 30th of December and she specifically told me she had feeling for me but that "she wants to get her emotions right". Sister what does that mean now?

We stepped into the new year, the first week passed, so did the second week, she hasn't said a word about "US". Her birthday is coming up in two weeks and I plan on confronting her day before her birthday to know exactly what she wants with me.

Am I moving too fast? Am I impatient? Some of my friends are saying she might be too shy to say the three letter word, that I should try and make a move by kissing her or something. NAIRALANDERS, what am I missing
Why do Nigerian guys have to buy stuff for people they are dating? Kai! i tire o.

Last time i checked, you dont need to pay cash upfront for a brand new car or house in America, thats because mortgages/loans are available by banks and foreclosures/repossessions are possible. In Nigeria, you need cash upfront to get a house or a car, getting a loan from a bank in Nigeria is a sour deal for the medium and low income earners while the rich take billions in loans they never repay. A director in the state civil service for example may earn N120-300k monthly depending on the ministry, a mortgage on a 3 bedroom bungalow will be upwards of N10million, no bank will be willing to keep open a mortgage for 13-34years if 20% of the salary is the amortization plan. Banks will usually like to close such loans in les than 5 years, to achieve that one has to earn atleast a million Naira to afford to get a mortgage or loan in Nigeria and stilll be comfortable. The cost of real estate in Nigeria is so high and personal income so low that the loan system in Nigeria cannot work. Some of this things are the root cause for corruption plaguing Nigeria.

This illustration is to paint a small picture of how things are. As it is now, local governments only pay salaries of staff with great stress, no one will buy a bond from a local government because they have no means to pay.

In Nigeria, only the FG issue bonds. No one, i repeat, no one will buy bonds issued by a local governments, not even states.

For the last time, Nigeria is not America! Neither are they on the same level and you are beginning to sound like you've never been to Nigeria.
Dude, where there is a will there is a way. All you have told me is to stick with the status quo and shot down anything different but you are forgetting is that at some point the baby has to be allowed to walk. It should stop being coddled and carried by its parents.

You are right that i am an outsider and that is good because outsiders see things with a fresh set of eyes. They see things from a different perspective. They say those outside the forest can see the entire forest but those in the forest can only see trees. There is a reason why the United States and Israel are some of the most innovative countries in the world and its because they attract 'outsiders' from different places in the world who brought there ideas and different ways of thinking to the country. I visited Naija recently and boy some of the things i witnessed where so ridiculous it was not even funny. Things that are soooooooooo illogical that they made me scratch my head as to who was making this horrendous decisions. You see outsiders observe things that insiders either cannot see or have stopped seeing. That's one of the reasons companies spend a fortune on consultants (outsiders) to take a look at there current processes and why failing companies usually clean house and start afresh with new people.

You don't need to be a genius to realize that Nigeria does not need 36 states and over 700 local govts. You don't need to be a genius to realize that Nigeria does not need 27 different ministries (and let's not talk about there counterparts at the state levels). You don't need to be a genius to realize that a govt going through hard times should be downsizing and not hiring more govt employees. This is just common sense.

I am sorry bro, but you can't keep doing the same thing over and again and expecting different results, that would be call insanity. Sticking with this same structure despite the failures shows that people are not willing to take the risk. They are willing to stay in Egypt because they are scared of the risks. Well guess what, there are no ideas that come risk free. Every new idea has a probability of not failing but still you try. Our current model is not working and we need a radical change. Leadership is not being afraid to make bold moves simply because of the disadvantages that come with the proposed solution or the fear that it might not work. This is what kills a lot of ideas in Nigeria. People shoot down new ideas everyday because they believe it won't work or because they only focus on the risks or demerits. How about focusing on what works. Great leadership is about weighing the good and the bad of every option and still picking one despite its disadvantages instead of simply doing nothing because of fear. Its about making bold moves and not being paralyzed by over analysis.

Sorry bro but there are no perfect solutions out there, Nigeria has to pick the best one possible. It has to sink or swim.

Did you Check the corruption index or just concluded based on the corruption cases in Nigeria that Nigeria is the most corruption-tolerant country? And as regards my view, this is not about being simplistic of the world view but I only cited Haliburton scandal as an instance.Whether it was between foreign company and some Nigerian politicians both were not existing in a vacuum or just fell from space, they all belong to particular races.Mind you, I'm not endorsing corruption or saying it's okay at some certain degree but my point is about selective fight against corruption and travesty of justice.I'm happy you agreed with me that there is no perfect system in the world as long as it's being run by human beings.I would rather prefer the use of available statistics to the vague summation that no country in the world tolerates corruption like Nigeria. We should not paint our country darker than it is neither do we paint it less dark than it is because that will be tantamount to dishonesty or being unpatriotic.

No. It would be better if our private companies bought steel on the international market from the cheapest producers, while we used the little money we have to fix more important things, like our electrical grid and our transport infrastructure. Would you think it better to raise your own cattle and grow your own vegetables, instead of getting a good job that would allow you to buy those things? It's exactly the same reasoning at work here.
Bros, they truly need to make Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations required reading in every secondary school in Nigeria cos the lack of understanding of economics is really glaring not only on this thread but in the policies of our central bankers.

And what is your alternative oh wise one. To continue importing steel that provides no jobs to Nigerians and eats up or forex?

The obsession with it is that no nation industrializes without steel!
The law of comparative advantage states that countries should focus on goods that they have a comparative advantage of making and for Nigeria that does not include steel.

and where did you read me say I am an advocate of socialism of state control? I said governments need to intervene and indeed they do from time to time even in so called free enterprise economies. Government's role is to teleguide the economy, act in emergencies/crises and intervene when the private economy has not got the capacity or profitability to deliver a service or product that is in the national interest.

If you think Nigeria is ever going to industrialize or generate sufficient power with private capital, you are living in dreamland, we are already 60 years into our independence, in 60 years we will be talking asbout the same problems if you are waiting for private capital. Government is the only one with the capacity to establish certain large industries, once established they can and must be privatised. That is what these countries you mention did and that is indeed the lesson you should learn from these countries. The problem is not government setting up industries, the problem is government running them.

Please don't get bogged down with theory and throw the baby out with the bath water, there is a difference between who establishes and who runs. It has been proven all over that governments getting involved in running commercial enterprise has been a failure but that does not mean that governments should not establish critical industries and sell them. A lot of the industries privatized by the Thatcher govt are very profitable organizations today employing loads of people. According to you because they were inefficient under state control, I guess they should never have been established? We live in an environment where access to capital for long gestation businesses is almost impossible, so we should continue exporting raw materials and importing finished goods?

If the British government did not establish or save from collapse at some point in their history, the following companies would not exist: British Petroleum British Aerospace Cable & Wireless Amersham International National Freight Corporation Britoil Associated British Ports, Enterprise Oil Jaguar,British Telecommunications, British Shipbuilders, British Gas, British Airways , Rolls-Royce , BAA, British Steel and about 50 more.

Govt took control becuase it was in the national interest, jobs and national development were at stake and that is what this govt needs to do.

Again I stress the problem is state running of businesses not states establishing industries. I have never said govt should run Ajaokuta or any other state enterprise, I challenge you to quote where I said so. You need to read and respond to what I actually said, not what you think you read because of preconceived ideas.
I am sorry to tell you but in a free market economy, govts should not be in the business of chosing winners and loosers. That's the job of the markets. If you bail out everyone then you lose the most important motivation of all. The fear of failure. When you take away the fear of consequences then people do stupid things in the markets. I believe its called moral hazard. Which in other words means that if you bail someone out of a problem they put themselves in, what motivation will they have next time not to do that.
Bailing out an institution is setting a precedent and you risk going down a slippery slope towards govt control of private enterprise. The job of the govt is to make sure the rules are being followed and not to be getting involved in the outcome of the game. They are the refs, not the players.

Instead of the govt focusing on getting involved in almost every industry in Nigeria from the oil & gas to sports (yes, the govt owns 18 out of 20 football clubs in the NPL) the govt should instead focus on creating strong democratic institutions with the rule of law and an environment where private enterprise can thrive. The reason why there is hardly any capital inflow into this country is because its not seen as stable enough. Its too corrupt, it ranks 136 out of 167 nations of the corruptions index by transparency international (http://www.transparency.org/cpi2015#results-table). It is ranked at 169 out of 190 nations in the ease of doing business (http://www.doingbusiness.org/rankings) and most importantly it ranks at 116 of 178 nations in the economic freedoms index
(http://www.heritage.org/index/ranking). This is why only govt run business seem to be able to operate in Nigeria.

This is what the govt should be concerned with, not trying to get into an over saturated commodities (steel) market.

If you build it, they will come - Field of Dreams

By the later 1930s, most U.S. journalists realized their mistake in underestimating Hitler or failing to imagine just how bad things could get. (Though there remained infamous exceptions, like Douglas Chandler, who wrote a loving paean to “Changing Berlin” for National Geographic in 1937.) Dorothy Thompson, who judged Hitler a man of “startling insignificance” in 1928, realized her mistake by mid-decade when she, like Mowrer, began raising the alarm.

“No people ever recognize their dictator in advance,” she reflected in 1935. “He never stands for election on the platform of dictatorship. He always represents himself as the instrument [of] the Incorporated National Will.” Applying the lesson to the U.S., she wrote, “When our dictator turns up you can depend on it that he will be one of the boys, and he will stand for everything traditionally American.”

These tit for tat attacks must be condemned and both sides should be told to exercise restraint. However, I think it's important to remember that the fundamental reason for this violence - a factor which predates even the recent abductions and killings of youths on both sides - is the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the continued building of Israeli settlements on Palestinian territory. Even as someone who usually supports Israel and who loathes Islamist fundamentalism, I find the construction of settlements on seized land simply unconscionable, especially since the United Nations Security Council has on several occasions declared those settlements illegal. While I sincerely hope for a resolution to the age-old grievances between Israel and its Arab neighbours, I have no reason for optimism. As anyone who has studied the Middle East can attest, these are historical conflicts founded in the religions of these peoples and deeply ingrained in their psyche. Only God can deliver the children of the Middle East. May God deliver them.

Enough of that, now back to Trump. Where were you when Arnold became Governor or let's go backin history, have you ever heard of Nixon, Buchanan or Jackson? You've called him every name in the book and now he's Hitler, seems the liberal media are really good at educating you. First of all, I think you mean The Art of the Deal not the "art of negotiation".

Secondly, if you think putting someone who is an enemy of public education in charge of education good policy then good for you.

Thirdly, if you hate deregulation so much why don't we get rid of the FDA, FDIC, SEC and the EPA. Let's go back to the 20's where the wealthy and the powerful can get away with alnost everything. Let's get rid of the clean air act after all breathable air and clean water is bad for business. Let's remove the checks and balances that were put in place in the 30's to prevent the excesses that wrecked the economy. I guess that will please you people.

i dont think you should be saying what you are saying if you know a little about governance especially n Nigeria.

No local government has the funds to build or maintain an airport in Nigeria. No local government can build an power generating station in Nigeria. 80% of electricity generation the the US is by the private sector while a huge part of the 20% balance is by the US federal government. Do you even know what a power grid is? Below is a picture of US power grid, are the Americans, Indians, Chinese, Europeans and the whole world all foolish by having power grids? Pls read some more.

If the repairs of Shiroro dam cast N2.4billion, how much do you think the construction of such a dam cost? How long do you think it will take a local govt earning N10million/month to build and maintain as if they dont pay salaries or attend to other responsibilities. last year 2016, a state like Nassarawa had a budget of only N77billion for a whole year. How long do you think it will take the state to build a N20billion power plant?

Let me stop here and encourage you to embrace reality and stop comparing Nigerian states and LG to developed countries.

TravelRe: FG Begins Rehabilitation Work At Kaduna Airport Despite Senate’s Opposition by davidif:

Bro, even the US you are inferring has states and lower levels of governance. There is no doubt that states and LG are as important as the FG but our laws are weak and have several loopholes around them. LG used to have autonomy, what happened all of a sudden LGs became an appendix to state governments. The structure of Nigeria is OK, laws are archaic and weak. The legislature and the Judiciary are the real reson Nigeria will not get meaningful growth. Who makes the law? Legislators. Who presides over the law? Judiciary. If those 2 are weak, the FG, States and LG will always be misruled by the executive and that is what we are experiencing. Without proper laws and independence, state police agitation will end up in the wrong hands giving governors too much powers.

Back to the main issues, Air transportation can never be the responsibility of states because it is wholly either an interstate or international transport. In fact any form of social service that governments most provide that cuts across states is no longer a state responsibility. Providing water is a state responsibility because water networks must not cut across states. All roads linking 2 states or more automatically becomes a federal road. All rails cut across states. A sea port not only serves the state it is located but the entire country so it becomes a federal responsibility. Tertiary, Secondary and primary education must not cut across states so responsibilities are shared between FG, states and LG resp. Every country in the world has an electricity grid. Thats because not all states have the necessary factors for producing electricity. Factors of electricity production are hydro, gas, coal, nuclear, wind and sun. Coal is not as effective as gas, nuclear, we are not there yet while the last 2 are expensive and not very reliable. Basically, most countries rely on hydro and gas which cannot be done in every state while electricity can be transmitted across states, so it becomes a federal responsibility. Agriculture is a major social responsibility for provision of food security and foreign exchange, all tiers of government are equally responsible here.Of course external security belongs to the FG but internal security could be shared. However, It needs a very high level of interstate coordination to be able to split the federal policing we have to states as it will make it difficult for law abiding citizens to move with goods and services across states which is why it has remained a federal responsibility. As it is now, state governments provide logistics and other services to police in the state for efffectiveness. The list goes on and on.

My point is, restructuring is not our problem but effectiveness which only the law and law enforcement can provide.
First of all, restructuring the Kaduna airport should go to the local govt that the airport is in. That's how things work in other countries. You build your own airport and you maintain it irrespective of if air travel cuts across state lines.

Secondly, in a lot advanced nations powergeneration is done at a local level. The local govts should contract the building of a power plant to a utility company. It could be coal, hydro or wind. If one local govt cant afford it then they can band together with few other neighboring LGA's to invest in one blthroufh the bond markwt. Having a national power grid in a country of around 180 million is complete and utter foolishness as far as I am concerned and it is becoming clearer by the day. Its sad that the fed govts are still flogging the dead horse and expecting a different result.

Finally, if you think the Nigerian structure is OK, then ask yourself why almost all of them need allocation to even exist and then ask yourself what happens if you cut off that lifeline. Let's see how many of those states that won't fold.

The stupidity of the state and local govt officials being paid by the fed govt is stunning. What's even as stupid is that the majority of the revenue of the States come from the fed govt and don't even get me started on the local govts.

This country has been living beyond its means for so long and now that the country is in reckoning everyone is running helter skelter. As bad as this recession has been. It has exposed the weakness of the current system. You can't be using a significant part of you paying members of the govt from the fed level down to the local level.

Read the full article below. For those lazy readers (which happen to be a majority of Nairalanders), I would also summarize what the article says (Synopsis).

Major take aways:

1. American foreign aid money is probably stolen by African leaders, therefore due to high level of corruption Trump would withdraw foreign aid to Africa or at least keep it at a minimum.

2. Trump in this document questions... "On terrorism, the document asks why the United States is even bothering to fight the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria..."

3. China is out competing the United States in business in Africa, and Trump would find away to reverse this.

4. Trump questions if the billions America funnels to fight AIDS in Africa including Nigeria is "even worth it". Even though his nominee for Sec of State Rex Tilerson lauds the program. Trump is not game, and may scrap it and let African governments fund AIDS treatment for their various countries.

5. Trump is considering "extreme vetting" for people coming from "ebola-ridden" countries. As he stated in the article "American has enough problems already"....

and what's ur say on CNN as experienced as they are, openly supporting a candidate over another huh
I don't know what exactly you mean by open but if you want to see any news network that openly supported a candidate then you should have gone to Breitbart news or the Drudge Report, Info Wars, and several segments of Fox News like the Bill O'Reilly hour and see how brazenly they became the mouthpiece for Trump the candidate. It was so glaring that after Trump won he decided to make Breitbarts chief editor his senior advisor in the white hiuse. Now that's what you call "openly supporting a candidate".

well IMO no matter his flaws the media house shud av remain professional and stay neutral btwn d contestants
Which media house are you talking about because as far as I am concerned the major networks apart from Faux news tried to present a balanced view of Trump by even bringing Trump spokes people on their network at some cost to even their credibility. CNN brought in former Trump campaign manager Cory Lewandowski as a commentator on the network in addition to other Trump surrogates like Jeffrey Toobin and several others so what are you talking about?

Openly support a candidate? Like Breitbart news and conservative radio openly supported Trump? The fact that they were critical of Trump is because he is is the most flawed candidate to ever run for a party ever. Never have we seen a guy with so many character flaws and transgressions as this guy and maybe that's why the media focused inordinately on him than the other candidate. I mean we are talking about a guy who openly made racist, xenophobic remarks about minorities and people of different religions.

I'm already getting tired of this! No one is comparing FDR's greatness to Trump, for goodness sake FDR is listed as one of the greatest. The debate is can a flawed president also be great? So far, you have not disproved my point that being flawed does not automatically make you a disastrous or unsuccessful president. So leave your definition to the side and argue based on facts! Election is over, Trump is the president, judge him after 4 years like every president!
Nope, the debate is that can a leader so fatally flawed as this one ever be great. Big difference. Not all flaws are equal and in leadership there is no flaw as bad as Trumps. The fact that some of you guys are not afraid that someone as thin skinned as this guy is the most powerful man in the world really makes me wonder how blind the people are.

First of all, in terms of national security you need a leader to be calm and restrained not a thin skinned loud mouth who is so easily provoked.

Secondly, you need a leader who is level headed and has a first rate temperament and who has the patience to work with his party and those on the other side of the aisle. Not someone who divides.

Finally, you should ask yourself why it is that someone with Trump's fatal character flaw has never been elected to the highest office in the land before? Do you think this man could ever be elected in 1932, 1980 and any other election in U.S history

Why did bubu divde naija nd refer to dos dat didn't vote for him as "other 5%" huh

And I believe CNN should av had more experience in election related issues than going against a man nd supporting another...

Let's call a spade a spade
That's the difference between Naija and yanki. Americans hold there leaders to a higher standard than they do others. That's why there country has worked for centuries unlike Naija where a leader would be corrupt and the people from his village will still be supporting him even if he is under investigations.
