Gomeromo1: This call from madam Kemi just confirms her incompetence. She is supposed to be providing leadership to the CBN and not cry like someone who has been given a task too big for her. Nope. She is not supposed to be providing leadership to the central bank. They are supposed to be independent of each other. That's how things work in advanced economies. |

Truth234: That is one of the reasons we are where are now. Wasn't Okonjo there when the economy started current downward trend? The truth is there is lack of confluence between monetary and fiscal policies, and until both complement each other we won't have a balanced economic policy. Wrong! That's not how economies work. Both entities are supposed to be independent of each other. That's how stuff works in most modern economies. The problem to me seems to be that Mrs. Adeosun seems to have run out of ideas. |

Earth2Metahuman: She is right.
Imagine ministry of finance suggesting a low interest rate for small scale business while a capitalist dunderhead at cbn insist on high interest rate.
Cut cbn power now. Actually, she is wrong. They are both supposed to be independent. The job of the ministry of finance is fiscal policy (govt expenditures etc) while the job of the central bank is supposed to be monetary policy (setting interest rates by controlling the money supply in the economy). In fact, the central bank is supposed to be completely independent of the govt. They are supposed to make decisions independently from the President. I can't even imagine Donald Trump beginning to tell Janet Yelken what to do. You would see an uproar over here. Now having said all that, this is a scary situation. You are supposed to have the ministry of finance and the CBN partnering and working together but they seem to be in confrontation with one another. |

ApexTitan: What you present as evidence does nothing to support the narrative that Nigerians are being targeted. They are all reports of the new and expanded scope of directives issued to border officials. As reported and included in your links the new mandate of the border agents is this: the detention and if warranted, the eventual removal from the US of those found to have violated immigration laws. "These include people convicted of fraud in any official matter before government and people who have abused any program relating to the receipt of public benefits." These are the types of people that previous administration turned a blind eye to and who the media is agitating for to remain in the US.
Why was I expecting figures to show those turned back or detained at the borders so we could compare with a previous date? Please lemme retire for the night. Maybe my explanations have not been clear enough but what I have been trying to tell you is that detentions and repatriations have been higher than usual because of Trump's direct policies and the unintended consequences of those policies. You do know about the law of unintended consequences right? Well If you dont, you can google it (also see collateral damage). What i am saying In essence is that many travellers are suffering from the 'spillover' effect of those initial policies and some of this people happen to be Nigerian not that they are targeting Nigerians specifically. As for asking me about the data of the number of people who have been turned away at the airport, that's like asking me to produce a video footage of O.J Simpson killing his wife or else he is innocent. It's completely preposterous to the nth degree and with due respect, no one with common sense would say that. Also that data even if it is collected is most likely collected by airport security in the multiple airports across the country and even if homeland security decided to compile that list they are unlikely to release it to davidif. |

ApexTitan: Thank you for clearly stating your position. In the same vein, please provide evidence of the claimed increase in deportations so that we can all analyse to determine if there is indeed a targeting of Nigerians or Africans which has been the point of this thread. I maintain that the hues and cries of so-called unfair deportations are so far the product of political bodies and the media that are still smacking from defeat at the last November 8 polls. Trump’s executive order aims to deal with immigrants and aliens who are in or seek to enter the US via dubious means and those whose intents threatened the security of the US, something the previous administration had taken a milder stance on. That’s one of the reasons many Americans voted for Trump and a prerogative of the US as a country. Nigerians with legitimate reasons and who have met the stipulations for travel to the US have nothing to fear. The governor, while on the inspection of some of the lands said there is no going back on some Certificate of Occupancies of filling stations revoked, citing priority for safety of lives and properties.
He said he was on the side of the masses and would not shift ground on the new order on the granting of CofOs and due consideration of policies guiding the citing of filling stations.
The governor said he would not wait till lives and properties were destroyed unnecessarily before taking further actions.
He cited the example of a new filling station taking off beside a school that has been in existence for over 15 years in Irona, noting that the construction remain suspended while the land remained acquired by the government.
The governor emphasized that the safety and love of the people come before personal interests, saying the government will not allow the gains of some sets of people to result in wanton destruction of lives and properties of others.

ApexTitan: Sorry that question was directed at davidif. Up until now the impression he had been giving was that people were not denied or detained at the POE by border officials in the past, that this all started because of Trump. Right now he has changed his position saying the rate of denials has increased. We will wait for him to provide specifics on how this rate has supposedly increased.
Trump is a controversial figure and that's without a doubt. What has been playing out in the leftist bent mainstream media is a sad comedy where every one of his actions is presented by them as actions of victimisation or abuse. Much of their outcry is unwarranted, baseless or purely sensational like this "Trump is targeting Nigerians" narrative. Like any country, the US reserves the right to place conditions on people who wish to enter through its borders. The US has had forms of travel bans in the past even under Obama. https://www.dhs.gov/news/2016/01/21/united-states-begins-implementation-changes-visa-waiver-program Nobody said anything then. Maybe i didn't state my initial thesis clearly so i will be clear this time. There are more deportations now in the Trump administration than there were in the Obama administration at this juncture in the Obama administration because the Trump administration has made it a priority and they have expanded the criteria for deportation and detention giving immigration officials more discretion than before. To execute this massive operation there are more immigration enforcement officials and border patrol agents and this guys have been given broader powers and expanded criteria required for deportation. So while Trump's travel ban has been struck down as illegal, the deportations have continued at a much higher pace than they were at this time than any previous administration (including Obama's) What is happening in the airports now is a spillover effect of Trump's initial travel ban. Just like You have had a rise in hate crimes since Trump has been elected into office the same thing is going on with detentions at airports and refusals. This is one of the multiplier effects of policies passed at the top. That's why leadership matters a lot, especially executive leadership because the higher you are the bigger the impact you have downstream; intended or unintended. You have heard of the law of unintended consequences right? Here's how Trump trashed Obama's deportation policyhttp://www.washingtonexaminer.com/heres-how-trump-trashed-obamas-deportation-policy/article/2613015Immigration Agents Discover New Freedom to Deport Under Trumphttps://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/25/us/ice-immigrant-deportations-trump.html?_r=0 |

ttmacoy: if she truly wants to help American companies recognise investment opportunities in Africa why not take them to Africa which will be a lot cheaper and easier?
They were probably refused the visa because the organisations don't seem to have much merit and also probably past attendees 40% of whom were refused ended up doing a runner or didn't even attend the summit at all.
Go and look at the website below. Her objective is to help US companies see investment opportunities in Africa so why doesn't she take them to Africa where they can meet a lot more small businesses who cant afford to fly to America and who need investment?
http://www.agedsummit.com/
This so called summit is supposed to be in it's 3rd or 4th year yet we can't see any photos videos reviews of past summits, attendees or speakers. We have no clue who is speaking at this event which was cancelled and it is for 3 days. See below website for another submit and see how they have a program with speakers and topics etc? Are you telling me you will really pay for a summit where you have no idea who is speaking or what topics they will be talking about? No idea what investors, companies etc. will be attending? Such events will put on their websites the companies they are expecting etc. to sell the event.
http://www.ccausafricasummit.com/
And for all US embassies in all the African countries to deny all invites it must mean that summit has been blacklisted for previous visa abuse or there are concerns about the summit.
The summit website is just one page, no links, nothing just one page. The text they have under climate change etc. is copy and paste from the UN publication on climate change. Dude, this is a fairly young summit. It's not as established yet so I doubt if they have acquired the sophistication or have the clout for that yet. Secondly, your assertion that "if she truly wants to help American companies recognise investment opportunities in Africa why not take them to Africa which will be a lot cheaper and easier?" shows that you have not worked in the corporate world over here because if you have you would know that no one is going to send there employees on an all expenses paid trip to a far flunged country for some summit somewhere on planet earth. That's a waste of my time and resources especially if I am a small or mid sized company that can barely afford it. If you want me to come and invest in your country come and convince me first and introduce yourself to me. |

So a continent that depends on aid from western countries for survival is sooo valuable to the rest of the world will collapse without it? Isn't that like saying a rich man would go bankrupt without the beggar who begs him for good? For you to even say that because 191 planes land in nigeria daily is a sign foreigners want to come to Africa is just fallacious. Foreigners who usually come to Africa are aid workers, the adventurous type or the guy who grudgingly gets sent to Africa on a posting from his employer because they can't find a local guy to do the job better. So for you to say that foreigners want to come to Africa is just plain fallacious bruh. Your comment is so full of false assumptions and conflated mumbo jumbo that I am even wondering whether to even waste my time to unpack the rest. because i dont want to derail the thread. So I am going to re-iterate what I said earlier about people's perception of Africa, Sub Saharan Africa is not a prime business destination nor is it a desirable vacation destination meaning that if you want people to come you have to give them a very convinvincing reason to and that includes going there to present your case because of you think a westerners who values his time so very much is going to take time out of their day and leave there family (not to mention the multiple antimalarial injections they have to take before even coming here) then you have either never lived abroad before one worked there. |

Politics › Re: Lagos Is Sinking? by davidif(op): 11:53pm On Mar 20, 2017 |
chijiblaze: What difference does it make what the president Trump believes or not. Even other world leaders who believe and claim to be championing the climate change gospel and seeking green policies are rather helpless to stop what nature is doing. Most times it's all talk and condemnation but little action. China says it needs to burn billions of tons of coal to power its bulging population. India says it's just playing catchup with the emissions of other developing countries. Even Canada and Australia with less than 2% of China's or India's population are competing to surpass the pollution of these giants. All these results in more CO2 in the atmosphere exacerbating the already catastrophically menacing greenhouse effect and politicians in Europe will gather just to talk about it or even how to make money from it. Meanwhile, all these green politicians and activists fly around the world in highly carbon emitting jet planes to deliver their lectures. Besides there's a school of thought that rejects the link between Carbon IV Oxide in the atmosphere and global warming. Many scientists and politicians subscribe to this point of view. Same as Trump. If all CO2 emission is stopped today, global warming still continues. Methane gas emissions from cattle herding and the gastrointestinal organs of ruminants worldwide produces more greenhouse effect than all the fossil fuels burning in this world. Add one or two volcanic eruptions to the mix and you'll realise man made pollution is just minuscule. So all I'm saying is: All those things happen on their own. The earth alternates between epochs of very cold and very hot climatic conditions. Have you not heard about Ice Age? So the temperature will continue rising, the oceans will continue surging, coastal areas like Lagos and the Niger delta will continue sinking, and nothing will stop it. Only that the government should be aware of these things and prepare adequately for any eventuality. It isn't wise that tens of millions of people and trillions of naira capital be invested in Lagos now to the detriment of the rest of the country. If the government can move the political capital of the country away from Lagos to the North for strategic military insecurity, the government can likewise move the economic capital away from Lagos to say the East, for strategic climatic insecurity. That way we would be able to safeguard the economic survival of the people of the largest black nation on earth. But as for Lagos, it's simply beyond salvation. Let the ocean have it! Actually it has been proven that global warming is caused by CO2 don't mind all those internet trolls and climate deniers in the Trump camp. |
