Politics › Re: The Richest Man Ever In The World Was African by Day169: 6:08pm On Nov 24, 2019 |
I have a different take on this. Mansa Musa may have been the richest man ever but what lessons or inspiration would we draw from this? I recall from history that he was a leader of old Mali empire. A monarch. Thus all wealth in the kingdom was his by law. Fast forward to today, we have people like the Sultan of Brunei or the Arabian kings and princes who are wealthy in similar fashion. These leaders have become the inspiration for Kleptocracic leaders (mainly in Africa) who try to corner the nation's wealth after hoodwinking their electorate to ascend to power. Contrast this with self made billionaires of today, the Gates, Buffets, Bezos' and our own Dangote. The have harnessed their potential genius, providing jobs for multitude of people and paying taxes to government. These are the true billionaires worth emulating! |

Why is it that a war ravaged place like South Sudan will install electricity a few years after major conflict in it's city while darkness pervades most of our (giANT of Africa) capital cities here, decades after conflict. Worse still a Nigerian clergy helped sue for peace whilst his homeland is in disarray. .. still scratching my head over the Nigerian conundrum! |

I think the guy is extremely lucky to have escaped with his life. In a city of 25 million angry people, struggling to make ends meet within the ambit of the law, an unscrupulous traffic attendant not only trying to rip off the hustling public but smashes a phone bought with hard earned money. Great write up, with real 'food for thought'. It can be described as a burger served, but with 90% beef! .. however, those who have the insight to read and assimilate this hardly do have the wherewithal to influence the desired drive for a change in the pattern of consumption in our country. The so called 'money-miss-road' economic class have little or no concept of saving for the rainy day while those who have some of this have been bugged down by the need for survival. I just wonder when, where and how the change will begin. |

Politics › Re: Border Closure Hits Benin Republic HARDER by Day169: 6:45am On Oct 24, 2019 |
Builderman: "Benin Republic has a population of 12 million people. But it is the worlds 5th importer of rice. In 2018, it imported rice worth US$996m.
Benin is also world's largest importer of used cars and second-hand clothing. All with a population of only 12 million people.
Do you wonder how? Don't! 98.2% of these imports into Benin are only on transit. Their final destination is Nigeria!
Nigeria is world's largest consumer of used cars and second-hand clothing, and is also Africa's largest consumer of Asian-grown rice.
The problem here is that all these imported goods attract appropriate import duty and trade tax, which are paid to the Beninoise Government while the goods are thence SMUGGLED into Nigeria WITHOUT ANY PAYMENT to the Nigerian Government, thereby, adding zero value to the Nigerian economy!
Sadly, THIS IS ALL DONE BY NIGERIANS! Granted, ECOWAS/CEDEAO charter allows for free trade between member states, but on goods produced in member countries, and NOT on imports from other economic blocs.
Where foreign goods are transiting through a member country, and ending up in another member country, the ECOWAS charter stipulates that the country of transit MAY collect a token trade tax, and its Customs officials should then escort the goods to the border of the importing country and hand it over to the Customs officials of the importing country!
But what we see in the case of Benin Republic is that it collects CUSTOMS DUTY plus TRADE TAX, and then allows the goods to pass through its hinterland for onward smuggle into Nigeria!
This is a clear violation of ECOWAS statutes and no nation can condone such costly infraction.
Nigeria has tolerated this nonsense from Benin for far too long and it is time to stop the malpractice if we want Nigeria's economy to grow.
Therefore, whoever cries foul because we have closed our borders to smugglers while we're putting our act together, IS AN ENEMY OF NIGERIA!.
Nigeria makes up about 74% of ECOWAS population and about 71% of its economy. It is ECOWAS that needs Nigeria and not the other way round!
ANY RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MEMBER COUNTRIES MUST BE BASED ON EXTANT REGULATION." Concise and brilliantly written! |
