Simbrixton:Per the first bolded, I disagree. The situation is actually the other way round. Older generation Yorubas always, by their words and actions, refrained from anything suggestive of superimposition of Yoruba identity on Edos. I have given you examples like how Awolowo clearly separated all parts of the present Edo State from Yoruba nation in his ethnographic survey report. Does Awolowo belong to this present younger generation? I have also cited how the Awujale of those days would as chief whip of the Western Legislature House leave out all future Midwestern area monarchs in his floor opening salutations and then declare that he had finished saluting all the Yoruba monarchs as far as he was concerned. Is that Awujale part of the present generation? But on the contrary, it was the present Awujale that came out few years ago to stir the hornet's nest that Oba of Benin is next to him in Yoruba hierarchy all in a bid to sound politically correct. Then the older generation are not the Yoruba monikers who stay all day on NL provoking Edos with tales of how Binis migrated from Ife. Even you were tagging Akoko-Edo a Yoruba founded enclave until I had to do justice to that falsehood. I guess you are of the older generation? The YOLICOM agitators who produce the Oduduwa map in which all parts of Edo up to Urhobo and Isoko lands were included, I guess they are also of the older generation? Per the second bolded, Edoids generally didn't harbor any resentment for Yorubas until some Yorubas began to drag them into Oduduwa maps. Whenever you do such, what it portends to especially the Bini man is a subtle envy inspired attempt to obliterate the rich history of the Benin Empire and its allure. |
Simbrixton:What you need to understand is that this is Nairaland which is a faceless forum where anyone can claim any identity and origin to create false impressions about sympathy for any movement. No genuine Edo person romances Kanu in his madness. How you know this is that no prominent or obscure Edo person is known in real life to have ever sympathized with Kanu or write and publish articles in the dailies appologising to Igbos purportedly on behalf of Nigeria the way Fayose, Sowore and one popular but controversial Yoruba columnists whose name has escaped me now does. If you look out for genuine Edo monickers like myself, Mullatto claro, and others, you would notice that the Igbo monickers on NL hate us far more than they hate even you Yorubas. |
Simbrixton:For you to allege that lands are being sold to Igbos in Edo State is an evidence that you know virtually nothing about the tradition and culture of Edos who you claim to so desperately seek alliance with. Lands are hardly sold to non-natives in Edo State unlike in Yoruba land where the extent to which you have sold your lands to Igbos has over the years emboldened them to keep labelling Lagos a no man's land. Ordinary Igbo participation in the politics of Edo State is not allowed by the natives let alone selling of lands permanently to them like you do in Lagos State. We all know how Jimi Agbaje, in his rabid quest to connect himself to Igbo sympathy votes to become governor of Lagos, threw caution to the wind and promised to elevate Igbo Ezes in Lagos to the same status as Yoruba Baales, and despite that he still got some Yorubas standing behind him. What greater evidence can there be that Yorubas have been courting Igbo friendship the most? No matter the desperation level, no governorship candidate of any party in Edo State (not even Igbos's APGA) can utter such a promise to elevate Igbo Ezes in the state to the same status as the even the least chief. That candidate dey crase? Abi dem swear for am? In fact such a candidate will be banished from the entire state. On your oral gesture of preference for an Edo person to hold power in Lagos or anywhere in Yorubaland, may I inform you that we are not interested in intruding into the governance of other people or states. We have our troubles to face in Edo State and which we have not finished solving. We are not like those folks from across the Niger who claim they want to develop other people's territories while their own homeland lay in ruins and reeks of underdevelopment. I can bet you that if not for the introduction of unitary system by these same greedy and self seeking folks, hardly would any Edo person have been migrating to Lagos or anywhere in Yorubaland and in the entire Nigeria to seek greener pastures. The ingredient that made the political alliance days of Enahoro, Odia Ofeimun, Alfred Rewane, etc cordial and which is now absent was the fact that Awolowo, as your leader back then and in his spirit as a true Federalist, made sure that no Yoruba attempted to superimpose their identity on the tribes of these persons... not even the Alfred Rewane's Itsekiri tribe which was even yoruboid. You would recall that Odia Ofeimun went all out fuming against Awujale for the latter's recent outburst by which he sought to subsume Edo under Yorubas. If The same Ofeimun (whom you listed among the men whose days with you were memorably cordial) could take exception to Awujale and turn rabid in it, then do you need any more evidence that the bigotry and resentment of today is founded on this new attitude of trying to superimpose Yorubaism on Edos? |
MelesZenawi:See inverted accusation. Which person in Edo has ever asked for Biafra membership? Edos detest that fraudulent hoax proposed nation and would not even touch it with a 100m long pole. If anything, it is Igbos that have been trying to forcefully include Edo in Biafra and Edos' rejection of the proposal made Igbos develop the Sour grape syndrome for Edo. A photographic evidence of Igbos literal begging of Edos to join them in Biafra is attached below together with the Biafra website where you have that information. https://biafran.org/the-biafrans/ If your Biafra agitation isn't about crude oil quest, how come the territory of Itsekiris in Delta State is included in Kanu's Biafra maps despite Itsekiris are manifestly Yorubas and don't deny their Oduduwa roots?
|
Simbrixton:Now, you are talking. If you had been slogging it out with Igbos like you have just done above, no tribe, not even Igbos themselves, would have been labelling you cowards. However you need to remember that Kanu, in all his madness and annexation of lands in the name of Biafra agitation, enjoys the backing of some prominent Yorubas, like Fayose, Sowore, whom Afenifere has to call to order. |
MelesZenawi:Indelible records of Igbo-Yoruba alliance: 1. In the1938 NYM chairmanship election conducted to choose the successor to the outgoing Yoruba chairman, Igbo members of NYM supported the candidacy of another Yoruba man (Afikuyomi) against that of Ernest Ikoli (an Ijaw) who ended up defeating the Yoruba candidate to the bitterness of Igbos who, led by Azikiwe, pulled out of NYM in anger and went to join the party NCNC founded by another Yoruba man named Herbert Macaulay. 2. When Northern delegates rejected independence motion in Lagos, Igbos and Yorubas colluded to stone them and do them other forms of harrasment on their way back to the North. 3. In the heat of the Western Region crisis Igbo members of the Western Legislature aligned with their pro-Akintola colleagues to get Balewa to unlawfully interfer with the proceedings in the house thereby leading to the unlawful state of emergency declaration by Balewa which sparked off a chain of violences that culminated in the death of the First Republic. 3. After the announcement of the 1962 census result figures while Awolowo the head of AG was in prison, the Igbo dominated NCNC led by Michael Okpara aligned with the remnants of the decapitated AG led by Alhaji Adegbenro to announce their own results differently from the FG's. 4. While Awolowo was in jail and the Igbos found themselves at the receiving end of the NPC-NCNC alliance which had used and dumped Zik for Akintola, Zik sent Michael Okpara to Ibadan to meet with Awolowo's wife to mend fences.... the result of which gave birth to the East-West UPGA alliance which went into the 1965 election as the joint party of Yorubas and Igbos. 5. At the height of the seeming brewing national anarchy occasioned by the Western Region crisis, a section of the military composing a Yoruba and four Igbo officers colluded and plotted a coup to forcefully and unlawfully oust the Hausafulanis dominated government at the centre. The coup however failed as the Igbo participants couldn't really thoroughly fulfill their part of the plot. 6. The failure of the coup and the observed lopsidedness in the ethnic pattern of the killings led to a civil war for which Igbos and Yorubas once more aligned by a joint secession declaration agreement which however failed too. This led to the loss of millions of Igbo lives which inspired in Igbo the present sour grape syndrome they bear towards Yorubas. 7. Even right now in 2020, Nnamdi Kanu the supreme leader of Igbos is currently seeking alliance with Yorubas on the issue of security. Check it out here below: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/01/i-will-give-yorubas-1million-ipob-members-to-support-amotekun-nnamdi-kanu/ I can go on and on. Igbo-Yoruba alliance has always been a recurring decimal in Nigeria's political history. |
Simbrixton:All these don't answer the simple question I asked you. |
MelesZenawi:Simbrixton has also severally ascertained that Yorubas and Igbos are brothers, and the utterance of the Obi of Onitsha coupled with the linguistic affinity between Youruba and Igbo Languages as shown below prove it all beyond reasonable doubt. Of all the over 10 different Languages in Edo State, none has any appreciable linguistic affinity with Yoruba unlike Igbo has. IGBOS, FIRST SETTLERS IN ILE-IFE BY OBI OF ONITSHA https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2017/05/either-restructuring-referendum-ezeife/amp/ 1. Ear: Nti(Igbo), Eti(Yoruba) 2. MelesZenawi:Unfortunately, you have not been able to state this history and the issuing authority as I have done about Obi of Onitsha. This is it again: IGBOS, FIRST SETTLERS IN ILE-IFE ACCORDING TO THE OBI OF ONITSHA THE FOREMOST TRADITIONAL RULER IN IGBO LAND https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2017/05/either-restructuring-referendum-ezeife/amp/ 1. Simbrixton:The bigotry you allege in the first bolded is only a reprisal to the discrimination, derogation, bigotry and oppression which all midwestern minorities suffered in the old Western Region that made them pull out of it. Before being labelled Kobokobo in the Old Western Region, there is no record of any Edo person provoking Yorubas with any derogatory utterance or bigoted action. The second bolded is an insult which I am warning you about for the second time. Igbos are equally as treated with disdain as Yorubas in Benin because of the attempts by both of them to drag some Edo tribes into their Oduduwa and Biafra. We can't seek friendship with Igbos who are responsible for the structural alteration that caused all the problems in Nigeria today as revealed by history. If anything, only you Yorubas have some soft spot for Igbos as it is only in Yorubaland that Igbos are voted to represent constituencies in both state and federal elections. As I speak, there is an Igbo man voted into Lagos State House of Assembly representing Oshodi-Isolo constituency. Another three are in the Federal House of Reps on behalf of a constituency in Lagos. In fact it is on record that those parliamenterians who jumped on a table and broke the mace all to frustrate the motion to impeach Akintola back then in the Western Region were Igbos voted into the Western Region Legislature by Yorubas themselves. So if anything, it is you Yorubas that have always sought friendship with Igbos and sacrificed your own interests in pursuit of that. Azikiwe's aspiration to become the first premier of the West had a lot of Yorubas in support of it despite the fact that Igbos had never made a reciprocal gesture to you Yorubas. As we speak, a lot of Yorubas are in the forefront of 2023 Igbo presidency agitation. Fayose visited Kanu in prison even when his own brother governors of the SE abandoned him. I can go on and on. So if you want to know which tribe has sought friendship with Igbos most, then look at the mirror. On your being labelled as cowards by Igbos, it is due to the alleged betrayal of them by Awolowo. And this has nothing to do with Edos as Awolowo wasn't an Edo man. Beyond this, the coward label Igbos hang on you yorubas has continued to stick because rather than debunk the Awolowo betrayal allegation with available superior contrary facts as to what really transpired between him and Ojukwu, you waste your time chasing after theories of some phantom founding of Edo towns by Yorubas. In your attempt to be nice to Igbos in pursuit of this fake Southern unity which Awolowo sought in vain and which the present generation of Yorubas also erroneously believe in, you leave unchallenged all the revisionist tales Igbos throw around against you Yorubas. So how won't other tribes take it that you are really the cowards they call you when they don't see any counter argument from you setting the records straight on the alleged Awolowo betrayal? Just visit NL threads about the War and you could even see some Yoruba monickers admitting that Awolowo betrayed Ojukwu and even also admitting that Awolowo betrayed Zik for allegedly usurping Zik's premiership victory with a tribal clarion call all in Yorubas belief in this rather fake Southern unity. So whose fault is is that you people continue to be viewed as cowards? Be honest!. The third bolded is by your admittance, an evidence that even your claims about Bini history are full of fallacies. Per your last bolded, Edos are rational people who give back to you only what you give to them. If it appears they are acting like Igbos towards you, then check yourself. You must have provoked them to it. Thank God you used the expression "starting to act" ... meaning that they weren't doing so before now. Why not ask yourself why now? |

MelesZenawi:Oga, your attempt to rewrite history will not change the fact that Igbo is the actual Yoruba subgroup whose Language has a lot of Yoruba words as incontrovertible evidence to Obi of Onitsha's affirmation of their co-Oduduwa descendant status with Yorubas. |
MelesZenawi:Land grabber in action. You want to reclassify Urhobos, Isokos and even Ijaws as Igbos. There is no illogicality and reviosionism that the quest for other peoples' lands and resources can't lead to. Your ipobian lust for crude oil that makes you try to separate Edoid tribes will always fail and remain dead on arrival. The earlier you learn to limit your Biafra agitation to your Igbo land, the better for you. Or better still look towards Oduduwa whom your Obi of Onitsha has told you are your actual ancestors. |
Simbrixton:You are rather the one being political in your views, if not, how can you yourself agree that someone of a non-Yoruba origin went to a Yoruba community and naturalized there, and then you argue that such naturalization translates to him having Yoruba ancestry? Do you read what you write at all? Are you sure you know the dictionary meaning of the word "naturalization"? The only actually Yoruba people ever to exist in Akoko-Edo are the Imeris who actually speak a dialect of Yorubas Language and don't understand any of the native Akoko-Edo Languages of Igarra, Okpameri, Uneme, Okpe, Sasaro, Ikakumo, etc. For feeling odd and strange among other Akoko-Edo tribes with whom they were together in Bendel State, they had been agitating to join their kit and kin in Ondo State and the 1991 states creation by IBB came as an opportunity to them to realize this agelong wish which they really cashed on and got carved into Ondo State where they now belong. If Akoko-Edos are Yorubas, then why were Imeri people having a feeling of oddity among them? Please answer this question and don't dodge it. Then above all, it is only online that Yorubas peddle this attache theory on Edos whereas physically on-ground they call Edos omo-Igbo because to the average Yoruba person, if you are neither Hausafulanis nor Yoruba, then you are automatically Igbo. When they see an Urhobo, Ijaw, Bini, Isoko, Esan, Akoko-Edo, Etsako, Ibibio, Efik; etc they label them omo-Igbo. The wife of my former boss, an Ijebu woman, once told me to my face that all my explanations about the difference of Edo/Delta from Igbo does not make sense to any truly Yoruba person because they see all of us as Igbos since we don't speak Yoruba. |
Simbrixton:You are only trying to shy away from the crux of this matter which is simply that the political encounters between Bini ancient Kings and their Ife colleagues doesn't pass for Binis having Yoruba ancestry or vice versa. How the childlessness of the last Ogiso impart Ogiso lineage with Yoruba ancestry and also makes Binis and Yorubas ancestral brothers is what you have not been able to to clearly and logically explain. You are the one guilty of tribalistic ego. |
Simbrixton:The bolded is an insult to the non-Wazobians of the South. Please refrain from making such utterance in future. The South-South people resist the attempt by both Igbos and Yorubas to superimpose their identity on them. They rather want to remain their original self hence the resist being included in both Oduduwa and Biafra. The presence of OPC in Sapele, Benin, and other enclaves in the South-South doesn't make these places Yoruba settlements any more than the presence of IPOB in same places make them Igbo territories. In Magboro, Ogun State there is an Igbo dominated community with an Igbo monarch, I guess that makes Magboro a town founded by Igbos? In Lagos, there are a lot of Igwes whom Jimi Agbaje even promised in his 2015 to make equal in status to Baales in his attempt to attract sympathy votes from Igbo voters. Had he won and proceeded to fulfil the promise, would that have made Lagos an aboriginally Igbo land? |
Simbrixton:If Ogisos were not Yorubas as you agree above, then how come they are related to Yorubas? It is like saying that Yorubas are not Hausas yet they are related to Hausas by blood. This is the biggest joke of the year. |
Simbrixton:He attempted to get them in too but just that those ones refused and chose the Midwest option. Recall that it was even he who sort of upgraded the Olu of Itsekiri to Olu of Warri against the subsisting tradition of Warri people. |
truefact:And how does Nzeogwu come in here? Wasn't it even the so called mistake of Zik that Nzeogwu was purportedly trying to correct? Look at the diabolical fool in the mirror please. |
Simbrixton:Aren't there Igbos who speak pure undiluted Yoruba and with the genuine Yoruba ascent far better than some Yorubas? Does that make them Yorubas? Awolowo fought throughout his political career to have every genuinely Yoruba speaking people assembled together into one region. To that end he argued that the Okuns in Kogi State and Igbominas and others in Kwara be carved into the Western Region. When Akoko-Edo joined the other Western minorities in seeking Midwest creation, Awolowo didn't resist them on the argument that they are Yorubas. In fact before then he had published his famous book "Nigeria's path to greatness" in which he clearly separated all the Edoid groups from Yoruba both in terms of culture and an ancestry. |
Simbrixton:When I say Edo and Delta, I am referring to the Edoid tribes alone and not the Igboid or Yoruboid ones who are a minority among them. Itsekiris are not Edos by ancestry. Only their royal lineage is Edo. Contrary to your claim in your second paragraph, there are really no Yorubas who migrated to Edo to take up Bini names. This is a fallacy that had been debunked in many threads here with the purveyors going silent for want of superior counter argument. That friend of yours is probably a victim of Ignorance about his home likely because he doesn't visit home. You should have asked him why his native Okpameri/Uneme/ Igarra /Okpe/Sasaro, etc is not mutually intelligible to Yoruba at all. |
Simbrixton:The mere fact that you agree that the original royal lineage of Benin was the Ogiso lineage punctures all the conjectures you laboured to sell above. The title "Ogiso" has no meaning in Yoruba hence the first Ogiso couldn't have descended from Oraminyan which is clearly a Yoruba title. Moreso the word 'Igodomigodo' which stands for the original name of Benin Kingdom has no meaning in Yoruba as well. So your theory above fails. |
Napoleondegreat:You really can't treat any part of our history in isolation. They are all interwoven. Did I hear you say say honest mistakes made by Igbos? So only Igbos made honest mistakes while other tribes made deliberate mistakes hence your continuous bashing of them for the consequences of those 'honest' mistakes made by Igbos? And why don't you also give Ugundipe some benefit of the same honest mistake? |
Simbrixton:Keep dragging Bini into Yoruba. Meanwhile during the Old Western Region times when traditional chiefs were members of the parliament, the chief whip, Awujale, would mention all Yoruba monarchs in his salutation leaving out the Oba of Benin and then declared he had greeted all the Yoruba chiefs. In addition, all the representatives from the later Midwest were labelled Kobokobo by their Yoruba colleagues as a way of derogatorily saying that their languages they spoke were unintelligible to theirs. And none from the future Midwest ever felt slighted or complain against any of these gesture for they knew they really weren't Yorubas. I guess they were not aware of the oraminyan tale by moonlight when they did all that? The Ekalderan story remains logically superior to the myth that Oduduwa fell from the sky. Ekalderan was the first Oduduwa and his name Izoduwa got corrupted to Oduduwa by Ife natives since there is no letter z in Yoruba alphabetical system. |
Dedetwo:Here is an unbiased account given by an Igbo man, Uchenna Nwakwo, who was not only a live witness to those events but was a direct participant. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.vanguardngr.com/2012/07/zikeyo-ita-face-off-aladinmas-misrepresentations/amp/ Please note where the report reads thus: "Secondly, the“famous carpet-crossing saga” is usually somewhat over-stretched and has been used to foist inter-ethnic misunderstanding between the Igbo and the Yoruba. It is not true that Yoruba NCNC parliamentarians abandoned Zik on the floor of the Western House of Assembly and crossed over to Awolowo’s side as often painted. "The truth is that five members of the six elected parliamentarians from the Ibadan Peoples Party, IPP, led by AdisaAkinloye (and some other fringe groups)tilted the balance in Awolowo’s favour by teaming up with the Action Group, AG; the sixth member, AdegokeAdelabu, joined forces with the NCNC to form the NCNC-Mobalaji Grand Alliance. For too long, many Igbos have been deceived into believing that the Western NCNC abandoned Zik and that the Yoruba are therefore a bunch of shifty, non-trustworthy people that are unworthy of strategic (political) alliance. Far from this, the Western NCNC stood solidly behind Zik to the bitter end." |
Simbrixton:Toyin Aimakhu speaks Okpameri or Unemeh which are Edoid Languages and unintelligible with Yoruba. The Aimakhu in the name is already enough evidence that the Toyin there doesn't make the bearer a Yoruba. Akoko-Edo imbibed the appearance of Yorubanness due to the expeditionary raids on them by soldiers from the Oyo Empire at the time the Benin empire had begun to decline hence couldn't send a counter expedition to dislodge the Ibadan soldiers from the area. I guess Awolowo has become the greatest enemy of Yorubaland for not ever targeting Akoko-Edo in his Yoruba irridentism battles? Awolowo, the most enlightened and most knowledgeable Yoruba man to ever walk the earth's surface did a comprehensive ethnographic survey of Nigeria and in his report placed Akoko-Edo among Edo ethnicity and never among Yoruba. Likewise, E.A. Bradbury, a British ethnographer had as far back as 1957 classified Akoko-Edo as a part of the Edo Nation and never Yoruba. Don't let the Akoko tag in the name deceive you for it was borrowed for political nomenclature and doesn't really connote any cultural or ancestral affiliation with Yorubanness. The Yoruba names you hear of in Akoko-Edo and indeed in parts of Edo and Delta States doesn't make these people Yorubas any more than the names Bello, Sani, Lukman, Fatai, etc makes the Yorubas who bear them Hausafulanis. In fact in Akoko-Edo, people also bear Nupe names like Zaiki, Damisa, Daudu, etc and that doesn't make them Nupes. Examples of actual indigenousAkoko-Edo names are: Pendo, Emmasealu, Okuo, Ozioma, Onize, Onyonnude, Oyionorifo, Okondo, Eneyufuo, Ozaveshe, Upe, Ukannah, Oyoifo, Idaomi, Eshemokhai, Asesho, Avazi, Avioganna, Ajimego, Eneze, Now, tell us what they mean in Yoruba. |
Simbrixton:So the fact that your monicker above is Simbrixton makes you an English man? |
zoedew:Edo PDP family is insurmountable when it comes to that. |
zoedew:But hasn't Obaseki now opened up Edo State treasury to the PDP now with Lucky Igbinedion still a member? |
okuta007:And you never read it here on NL that their resignation was in response to Obaseki's order that they either defected with him to PDP or resign? |
Brandonx:And in the process of revealing Oshiomhole's hypocrisy, he exposed his too by going to PDP to dole out over N20bn after having accused the same Oshiomhole of asking him to dole out a far lesser amount to the APC. |
