martineverest:So the APC's 18/18 of 2012 was not convincing enough? And you really think the average Edo voter loves PDP except those from Edo Central? |
Confirmedzombie:May one not find himself in the way of your missiles. |
Racoon:Story! Seniority got bastardized before then, and that was when Ojukwu and Ironsi refused to arraign before any military tribunal the Nzeogwus, Ifeajunas, Ademoyegas, Okafors, Anuforos, etc who gruesomely murdered their senior officers like Maimalari, Shodeinde, etc in very cold blood. |
Napoleondegreat:Wasn't that how Ademoyega implicitly trusted his Eastern accomplices to eliminate all the names in their mutually agreed hit list only for them to deliberately do a very shabby job at the point of implementation? |
Napoleondegreat:Ojukwu's excuse for pushing for Ogundipe's assumption of power was that the tradition of seniority in the army should be held sacrosanct. Good argument, no doubt. But how did you want Ogundipe to have trusted in Ojukwu's feigned commitment to seniority when all before then he was part and parcel of the Ironsi's administration and he couldn't impress it upon his boss to punish the January 15 coupists for gruesomely murdering their seniors like Ademulegun, Shodeinde, Maimalari, etc innocently? So much for a sticker to the tradition of respect for seniority. |
Napoleondegreat:Soldiers take power through carefully planned and executed coups like Ironsi did and Ifeajuna tried to do but failed. How then could Ogundipe have been able to just miraculously seize power in those circumstances without having had a carefully hatched and nurtured coup plot prior to that moment in question? Or you think to seize power militarily is a one officer show? |
Napoleondegreat:And if Azikiwe had assumed legitimate power by accepting the proposed NCNC-AG alliance, don't you think all the events which culminated in the dastardly coup and put Nigeria in the Ogundipe versus Gowon situation which ended up in the civil war would have been altogether avoided? |
Napoleondegreat:And it doesn't occur to you that prior to Ogundipe's alleged refusal to seize power hence failing to do what Yorubas we're allegedly supposed to do, Azikiwe too had already, on behalf of Igbos, refused to do what he was supposed to do by declining power which was legally due to him by virtue of Yorubas's proposal of the East-West alliance that would have in the first instance prevented the coup which led to the suggested illegal seizure of power by Ogundipe much later on? Ogundipe could be excused for the fact that military involvement in politics was illegal regardless of the circumstances. But how do we excuse Zik's and Igbos' refusal to seize power through a legitimate democratic opportunity which Yorubas threw open to them and by which Nigeria would have been salvaged from day one? |
Godlylifeoneart:The part of the story in your link which reads : "The early signs that this was a bubble was when spare part traders abandoned their trade to get in on the gold rush" got me rolling on the floor. Long terming in NSE is surest route back to one's village. |
Esseite:Except rustication now has another meaning, or else the party accusing him of being rusticated should have sued him for lacking the pre-requisite certificate to contest. That the authenticity of his L.LB from his alma mata is not being challenged by the opposition which itself used him as candidate in 2006 puts a lie to the alleged rustication. Thirdly, the linking of thuggery to him at all is another phantom which his accusers have not been able to establish with concrete evidence. Meanwhile the PDP now fielding Obaseki had been accusing the same Obaseki too of empowering thugs until the very moment he joined their fold. So how do all these sound logical to you? |
Esseite:But do you realize that the party that introduced thuggery and Agberoism into Edo State is exactly the one Obaseki defected into and claiming he wants to continue fighting thuggery? How does that sound to you in a logical sense? |
Jeux:Most of your responses are correct except on the issue of Nevis Street which is actually existing and was actually concrete tarred by Obaseki but less than 500m in length hence still a poor campaign point by Obaseki's supporters. In addition, the Edo Agripreneur Scheme, the 5000b/d capacity modular refinery, and all other achievements being bandied around by his supporters are all a ruse. |
martineverest:You mean the five Edo Central LGAs were not among the 18/18 Oshiomhole won in 2012 guber and that even the Igueben LGA which Obaseki won in 2016 was also not in Edo Central? |
kingzizzy:You still choose not to get it. If an egg is broken, it is almost impossible to gather the spilled contents with a fork. Nigeria was clearly an egg and Igbos knew this deep down in their hearts but deliberately broke it all the same, and are now asking why other tribes have not been able to gather it back in the past 50 years in which they held the fork and plate. Why did you Igbos break the egg in the first instance when you knew that a broken egg is almost impossible to recover? And mind you that only an Igbo man, in the person of the same Nwabueze, was ever given full authority at a point in time to correct Ironsi's blunder. That was when Obasanjo made him the head of the committee on the fiscal aspect of the drafting of the 1979 constitution and rather than recommend devolution of powers, he recommended the transfer of nearly every remaining duty in the concurrent and residual lists to the exclusive list and Obasanjo so adopted. Contrary to your claim, a president doesn't have the final say in a democratic regime, hence the refusal of Ekweme to make a case for restructuring under Shagari is his blame. Even in a military regime, the president's powers are not absolutely final else they wouldn't have been formulating their policies through civilian committees. |
ofeco:Ironsi's Unification Decree was meant to give unfair advantage to Igbos over other tribes, and the evidences are as follows: The strict federalism he met on ground did not allow a person who migrated from his home region to enjoy the same privileges being offered by the host region to her natives until such a migrant has lived up to ten years and somewhat naturalized there. This did not resonate well with Igbos who were most notorious for seeking greener pastures in other regions outside theirs. So Ironsi had to find a way to free up other regions for Igbos, and he found unitary system handy. Secondly, Ironsi's post Unification Decree immediate announcement that civil servants of Eastern origin would start being posted to the North to take up headship position was the clearest policy evidence that his constitutional 'reforms' were directly aimed at placing his tribe in a position of undue advantage over others. Three: the fact that his constitution review committee was overwhelmingly Igbo in composition and also chaired by an Igbo man, in the person of Professor Ben Nwabueze who actually advised him to dismantle the regions, was the clearest evidence that he had an Igbo domination agenda up his sleeves. |
kingzizzy:It will please you to note that in addition to the fact that Igbos featured prominently in government within the past 50 years in question as exemplified and evidenced by the vice presidency of Alex Ekweme to Shagari, the retrogressive civilian governments that came after the Biafra war were all actively voted into power by Igbos. Take for example the candidacies of Obasanjo, Yaradua and Jonathan were endorsed and voted massively for by Igbos despite these candidates and their party never pretended to be negatively disposed to the idea of reversing, through restructuring, the blunders of Zik, Ojukwu and Ironsi. In 1999 we all honesty knew that the party and candidate which had restructuring as manifestos was the AG but Igbos preferred to vote for the one-Nigerianist thus unitary system advocating PDP under the cover of being the only national party. Even in the ill-fated Third Republic, the NRC which was mainly rooted in the section of the country which would rather die than see a return to the pre-Ironsi status quo was the party of choice of Igbos as it swept the Igbo states in both the guber elections that period and the June 12 election. So anyhow you look at it, Igbos are still at the root of the difficulty in getting the Ironsi blunder corrected in the past 50 years. |
kingzizzy:What happened in the last fifty years when Igbos were partially out of power can't be treated in isolation of the pre-independence events as the former are actually the fallouts of the latter. Had Azikiwe, Ojukwu and Ironsi harkened to the voices of reason like Enahoro, Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello and Balewa; the Nigerian tragedy which still defines our present lives as a people would have been avoided. |
antadiop2:https://www.thenewsnigeria.com.ng/2017/06/25/my-opposition-to-secession-zik/ My opposition to secession-Zik Sunday, June 25, 2017 8:28 pm By Nnamdi Azikiwe When the 1954 constitution conference started, my good friend, Chief Obafemi Awolowo tabled a motion to the effect that in the new constitution, provision should be made that any state which feels like seceding should do so. I was opposed to it and said ‘no’ and said that once we have a federation, we are indivisible and perpetual. That was when we began to use that expression – ‘The Indivisibility and perpetuity of the federation’ – and that to secede would amount to treason. And so, a debate ensued. The Secretary of State then was Oliver Littleton, later Lord Chandos and he was very much interested and that was his first time in saying that the people of African descent were people actually debating at a high level. So a full day was given to Chief Awolowo to make his points. He spoke brilliantly as a lawyer. He made his points why secession should be incorporated in the constitution. He cited the case of the Soviet Union which is a federation, and that secession is written there so that any state in the Soviet Union can secede at will. He also cited the case of Western Australia and eventually he finished his case and was applauded. Lord Chandos said that on the face of the arguments before him it would be suicidal to incorporate secession in our constitution and that is why we have section 86 in our constitution that if any region or state should secede, then it will be an act of treason We adjourned. The next day, I had to reply. I availed myself of the opportunity to, well, demolish the arguments of my friend and I cited the case of United States which based its constitution on that of the Swiss Confederation. That is Switzerland. I pointed out a case, I think, that of Texas versus White, where Mr. Salmon Chase, the Chief Justice laid down the principle – he was really an arbiter – that the union was intended to be perpetual and indivisible and that any attempt to divide the union by secession was treasonable. Also read Why Awolowo did not make West secede The North (NPC) supported Action Group. The question was then: Should we have secession? The Colonial Office came to our rescue. You know, the usual principle of Britain – ‘divide and rule’ (laughs) but this time, it was in our favour. So, the colonial office backed us. Lord Chandos said that on the face of the arguments before him it would be suicidal to incorporate secession in our constitution and that is why we have section 86 in our constitution that if any region or state should secede, then it will be an act of treason and that was what led to this war, because Col. Ojukwu seceded and so violated the constitution. — Excerpt: Nnamdi Azikiwe’s interview with New Nigeria in 1975 |
remonics:Awolowo was a die hard apostle of federalism and federalism is a system which, in principle, seeks to give every tribe the right and power to assert themselves and decide their own destiny within the larger national framework. So federalism naturally has some trappings of tribalism. This is what many accusers of Awolowo of tribalism don't understand. What Awolowo actually fought against in Zik's attempted political incursion into the Western Region was the idea of someone from one region going to rule another region which he was not a native of. The regions were created in the first instance by the colonial authorities as a response to the demands for self governance by the various Nigerian peoples. Therefore Zik's attempt to rule the Western Region was a violation of the essence of the creating the regions. In addition, Awolowo wasn't really against a non-Yoruba ruling the Western Region. Rather he was against having a non-native of the region occupying the seat of power in Ibadan. Mind you that there were non-Yoruba tribes like Binis, Urhobos, Esans, Etsakos, Itsekiris, Isokos, Ijaws, Etunos, Unemes, Okpameris, and even the Igboid Aniomas none of whose prospect to rule the region Awolowo ever frowned at let alone resist. We are all asking for a return to true federalism today and I guess we have all become tribalists by the same scale we misinterpret Awolowo's pro-federalism advocacy as tribalistic leanings? |
Freestainworld:Ironically the names of the NDDC contracts beneficiary list just released by Akpabio are all PDP senators. |
https://www.sunnewsonline.com/impunity-killing-nigeria-phillip-asiodu/ Please note where the report reads thus: "In fact when the coup happened, he wanted me to join him in Enugu and I told him that I was not a regional man. And Ojukwu told me ‘we shall abolish the regions within 6 months''. |
RabbiDoracle:Just as corroborated by BBM, moment simply means SA. especially in a bear or sideways movement market. |
winterfell007:You reason like me. Southerner one-Nigerianists are terming him a bigot rather than smell the coffee that Nigeria is not really one. |
Nomswag:I realized that we are our own problem as far back as during GEJ's tenure when the hitherto frenzied resource control agitations all suddenly died down and the tunes changed to "Jonathan must have his 8 years to balance the power equation". |
operationmoses:Kiss the truth. |
espn:Lagos State alone is enough to act as a SW Development Commission just like FCT could easily pass for a NC Development Commission. You know that a lot of national revenues have been pumped to these two places over the years courtesy of them being Federal capitals amidst our practice of unitary system. ![]() |
Yebosola:The average SS person doesn't bear such resentment towards the SW. The Ewedu and Amala name calling stuffs are actually a thing of the SE due to agelong resentment over the allegation of betrayal during the war. To a very large extent the SS is neutral to the SE vs SW rivalry. If you want more evidence to this, then consider the fact that in the last federal and governorship elections, GEJ surprisingly worked for and delivered victory to the APC for his own senatorial district, Federal Constituency and even governorship which the Supreme Court snatched away. |
CashDiMkpa:Couldn't have been better said. This market is unpredictable so it is better one plays it by the moment. |
MelesZenawi:The same argument has started coming up for Yoruba vs Igbo. And unlike that of Edo vs Yoruba which emanated online from no identifiable authority, that of Igbo was stirred up by the highest traditional figure in Igbo land. Edo State is actually home to different tribes, at least 17, which speak different languages and bear different cultures. So how does it even make sense that they are all related to Yorubas who don't even understand any of these languages? Anyway, why would I even be surprised about it when it is coming from an IPOBian who claims to be a cousin to each and every SS tribe which are in themselves different from one another? Yoruba shares ancestry with Igbo. Direct your pains over it to the Obi of Onitsha who so affirmed. |
MelesZenawi:And I explained that the monicker did so out of a similar ignorance/quest for politcal correctness which Igbos too are guilty of. The mere fact that he is Yoruba but sees Edo as an Ipob enclave despite all glaring contrary evidences is similar to Igbos perception of Edo as Ooduans despite the preponderance of unassailable evidences to the contrary. This is the long and short of my argument. |
MelesZenawi:Just as you twisted my words as regards my comment on your shared politcal history with Hausafulanis and the Sokoto Caliphate by implication. I insist that Igbos share ancestral links with Yorubas. I have provided evidences from the words of a first class Igbo manarch the Obi of Onitsha. And mind you that all Igbos generally agree that Onitsha people are the genuinely full blooded Igbos. So whatever their monarch says about Igbo origin and history is the gospel truth. |
