k2039: No,we have nigerians who cant control their temper, who will use it for the wrong reasons(spouse killing one another and so on).

The above post is absolute balderdash. Nigerians are not more temperamental than other citizens of the world where it is legal to bear arms. Before Nigeria\Biafra civil war, Nigerians have rights to bear arms. However this concept changed after the civil war when the cabals at the helm of Nigerian government realized it safe to ride defenseless citizen anyway they wanted without consequences.

The first frontline defenders of eastern region were civilians armed with shotguns and local made pistols. It will not hurt a thing to allude to the fight put up by the Ijebu Ode cocoa farmer’s assoc\Agbakoya who revolted Gowon’s stay in western region while prosecuting a war against eastern region in the name of price control and tax. The aforementioned revolt took Nigeria’s newly formed 8th battalion under Major Ochefu to stop the riot.

It will be nice if Nigerians should be allowed to bear arms legally.
Politics › Re: Letter From Lt.col. Ojukwu To Lt. Col.banjo by Dede1(m): 1:11pm On Oct 09, 2012
The most idiotic aspect of the forgery is the conclusion of the alleged letter from Ojukwu to Banjo.

It reads:

"Yours very sincerely,

signed Lt. Col. Odumegwu Ojukwu,

Military Governor and Commander in Chief of Biafran Armed Forces."

I had hoped the ninnies who composed this crap knew little about military parlance. Ojukwu can not be a Military Governor of Eastern Region and Commander-in-Chief of a country’s armed forces, in this case, Biafra at the same time. I have known Yoruba peeps for writing outlandish stories of events in order to project their delusional image. If I had not read the prose purportedly written by Lt Col Francis Fajuyi while begging to die with Ironsi, I would have given a benefit of doubt to this rubbish.

Katsumoto: lol

Let me explain percentages to you, just in case you missed it in class.

If you claimed that Ndigbo contributed 87% of officers, then you should provide a list that shows all officers and then we can identify 87%. Providing a list of Igbo officers does not prove 87% or 60% or even 20%. To get a percentage, you need a numerator (Igbo officers) and a denominator (total number of officers).

I provided a total number of officers which indicated that Igbo did not constitute 87% or 60% but 33%. And I cited two British authors Miners and Luckham while you cited your brain.
Also I remembered posting list of Igbo officers that trumped the percentage suggested against the backdrop of your so-called number of Nigerian armed forces officer’s cadre.

You are commenting again without being familiar with the subject; you should take your own advise. Lincoln declared a blockade in April 1961. This led to ships, called blockade runners, being used to supply goods to the confederates. However, they were largely unsuccessful and most were british run ships. At least 1200 ships were captured or destroyed by the Union Navy.
This is why I cautioned the previous poster about unrelated analogy. It is very disingenuous to introduce main announcement of blockade without enforcement and blockade with total enforcement. I hope you remembered the battle of Ironclads and the blockade runners against the backdrop of so-called blaockade.

By the way, I guess you meant 1861.

Stop spreading lies. You initially claimed that Ndigbo constituted 87% of Officer Corps in 1966. Now it is 60%. When are you going to provide a comprehensive of all officers so that we can verify that 'bogus lie'?
I remembered obliging you by posting the names of Igbo officers from the rank of Maj General to Captain in Nigerian armed forces as of January 15, 1966. I have waited patiently for more than a year expecting you do append names to this conjectural crap.

I guess you remembered I purposely omitted the name of your favorite Igbo army officer, Lt J O Osuma, from the list.

dabossman: Oh, I see. I didn't know that war now recognizes tribe and race. Accept my apologies. I bet The Union Army in the American Civil War constantly provided food for Confederate soldiers and Southern secessionists. You obviously never had of the Union Blockade that crippled the Southern economy ensuring that the Confederates could not sustain the war. Oh, I bet General Franco was very magnanimous in the Spain vs. Basque Civil war.

Are Americans and Spanairds not living together in harmony and building their economy, even with the global meltdown? We Nigerians act like other people don't have a history. Well, news flash, many counties have fought internal wars, patched things up as much as possible and continue to live in peace. Let us continue to sow the seeds of hate and see where it will get us.
Please I suggest you reread the history of USA civil war. There was no blockade of Confederate or Southern secessionist by Union Government. Britain was a major supplier of Southern Confederacy. Unlike Biafra, Southern Confederacy did not have other North American countries performing the dirty jobs for Union side as Cameroon, Egypt, Tchad and Niger did for Nigeria.

It is foolhardy to remotely juxtapose Nigerians, Americans and Spaniards in any sort of comparison because Nigeria is county not a nation. There is nothing I cherish more than disintegration of Nigeria.
Politics › Re: Somebody Needs To Write A Book On The Foolishness Of Biafra And Ojukwu by Dede1(m):
Rossikk: That mode of thinking is a recipe for disaster. Civilized societies welcome and entertain variety of opinion. Pre-colonial Igboland was one such society, as Achebe's books clearly illustrated.

Two points:

1) Assuming there was a ''heat of the moment'', in which everyone was losing their heads (there wasn't), the Igbos deserved a clear, level-headed, thoughtful leadership at the helm to guide the peoples' actions. Instead, it seems, we got a mob enforcer.

2)There was no ''heat of the moment'' relating to the secession declaration. The declaration of secession occurred 8 months after the Sept 1966 massacre in the north, for which it was alleged to be a response.

Be honest. The coup was led by predominantly Igbo officers with Nzeogwu at the helm. Even pro-Biafran scholars do not dispute this fact. The outcry in the north was that these officers had killed leading northern and western politicians in a supposedly national coup while sparing all the Igbo leaders, many of whom those northerners also regarded as corrupt and decadent. The Igbo-led Ironsi military regime which had taken office failed to bring the perpetrators to justice for 7 months into its administration, despite repeated demands from around the country. (It was afterall a criminal offence to slaughter the prime minister, northern and western premiers in cold blood). Obviously some northern elite took advantage of this popular outrage at the Sardauna and Balewa's death and govt inaction, and used same to unleash mayhem against the Igbos living in the region.

My brother, let's call a spade a spade. The Igbo leadership screwed up. You would not be yarning all this stuff had Igbos won that war. Who would remember what Awo said or didn't say if Igbos had won the war? You see, your musings are the musings of a defeated man. A defeated person. You need to step out of that cage, and reclaim your power back from Awo and the FG. You've given them the power over Igbo lives and destiny which they do not deserve. We gain more dignity by questioning our internal mechanisms and how they might have served us better.
In one of your idiotic posts, you foolishly requested intelligent response to your posts. Do you think any reasonable fellow will respond intelligently to your series of moronic posts?

If you remotely think that Nigerian armed forces with, at least, 60% of Igbo in its officer’s cadre will stage an Igbo-led coup and Igbo officers will not dominate number of participants, then you are bigger fool than I thought.

Again, let me remind you that Ironsi might have been the Head of State however the policies and decisions of the Nigeria government flowed from the Military Executive Council. It is unfortunate you have flaunted your acute state of ignorance on a subject matter you knew little or nothing.

Ironsi inaugurated a tribunal to investigate the January 15, 1966 coup in Nigeria. The tribunal was to report its findings to the Military Executive Council for further recommendations. I hope it will add to your little knowledge to understand that three-man-tribunal that consisted Yakubu Gowon , Bala Usaman and MD Yusuf sat on the investigation. The only thing the tribunal accomplished was the to delete the names of Atom Kpera and Gibson Jallo as well as diminish names of Yoruba and Ijo officers as participants to further paint the coup as Igbo.

Please remember that Ironsi did not run a one-man show when he was the Head of State of Nigeria.

dabossman: Err, while not saying Achebe is right or wrong since I was not born during the war, neither was I (or Achebe for that matter) a member of the ruling junta back then, I do wonder at the logic in your comment.

Do the Americans supply food to the Taliban? Where they constantly shipping essential grains to Iraqis during the Gulf War? Did the Allied Forces provide sustenance for the Hitler-led Nazi Germany?

I would want to think that a strategic move in a war situation would be to cut all forms of food and arms supply to your adversary. Now, if that equals war crimes, then Churchill, Roosevelt, George Bush Snr and Jnr as well as Obama should be on their way to the War Crimes Tribunal. Even today, various forms of aid are withdrawn by world powers to show their displeasure with certain "unfriendly" governments.

Would you feed your enemy in a war situation? Just wondering.
The above post is a typical example of useless analogy borne out of undue pressure from tribalism and ill form of educational background known among so-called Nigerians. The last time I check, Taliban was a group of Muslim extremists that ruled Afghanistan. USA citizens and Afghan Taliban have nothing in common and will not have any national linkage after the war. Whenever USA armies leave Afghanistan, the group known as Taliban may decide to assume the affairs of the country and reverts to its Islamic indoctrinated way of life.

I do not think the debate or the so-called controversy over Achebe’s book on civil war would have ensured if Biafra and Nigeria were separate countries today.

'If we can't get a northerner to fill the post on a permanent basis we'll try and get a white man on contract, if we can't get a white man on contract, THEN, we'll consider other Nigerians'.

Seems to me like the beginings of quota system and federal character. I just wonder why some of these characters are so romanticised in Nigerian history.
This is one of the major reasons that triggered January 15, 1966 coup. Also Ironsi promulgated decree 34 to unify Nigerian civil service but those who want Nigeria in a sorry situation labeled it unitary move. As long as I live, it is my cardinal duty to preach the idea of disintegration of cesspit call Nigeria.
Politics › Re: Somebody Needs To Write A Book On The Foolishness Of Biafra And Ojukwu by Dede1(m): 11:53pm On Oct 07, 2012
Prof Corruption: Let's start with your foolishness first.

1. Was the fiat of Ironsi to proclaim Nigeria a unitary state constitutional? Why did Gowon and co have to plan a coup? When the going was good for Igbo, it was constitutional but when it turned sour, it wasn't. Why do you select issues that favor you to discuss and completely ignore preceding events?

2.Your second point only reinforces why you are not bright. Your point support completely the assertion of Rossikk that why declare a war you were not prepared for? In the 60s, each region had consulates in many friendly nation. Read about Nigeria. To expose your intellectual laziness, why you admitted your region could not make such investment, why exactly did you need the support of France for? How did a region manage to get such support? If they had the support of France, why not other nations as Rossikk has opined?

3.May be you were there planning the war with them. Why writing on what you know little about? Gowon did not declare an outright war. He started with police action which was a child splay compared to real military action. In any case, are you not alluding to Ojukwu's foolishness. Why declare a war if you can't secure food for your region? Did he expect food to fall from sky during the war? Was he expecting his enemies to feed his army?

4. Your point 4 is too vague. Soldiers are trained to kill. They killed their targets during the war. If a civilian behaved like military target, you applied your bullet. Simple. If an earthworm walks like snake, it has to be killed like snake. Simple

5. So what did they bank on? They banked on nothing and got nothing. You are dishonest if not it doesn't take much to know Ojukwu declared Biafra at the point the region was not prepared for war. That's the same thing Awolowo did not do and all you folks called Yoruba cowards. There is no point leading your nation on a suicide spree.

@OP,

Thank you for being objective and using your logic. These issues are glaring for honest and sincere minds to grasp. It's not rocket science. Will Israel embark on a war where an arab nation is expected to supply food? Ojukwu was foolish for declaring a war that was lost from the word go. Simple as abc.
Since you proved a worthy sack of hammers, I concluded your posts do not demand a glance. I guess you are not allowed to cross busy traffic roads because you appear as a potential road-kill.

I guess the appropriate step would be for someone to write a book on the Foolishness of Rossikk.

1. To inform you that alleged military fiat was unconstitutionally constituted.

2. Eastern region was not a sovereign nation and could not have been in position to make such commensurate investment on weapons and weapons sources.

3 There could have been efforts to make commensurate investment in food and agricultural production, food import sources and entry routes if eastern region had peacefully existed as sovereign nation for, at least, six (6) months before Nigeria, led by Gowon, precipitated a war against it.

4 If the so-called federal troops you foolishly alleged in your post were the same troops that murdered civilians and soldiers of Igbo extractions in certain parts of Nigeria and did not include soldiers of Igbo or easterners, you are the one peddling in dishonesty.

5 Only moronic dingbats such as you will insinuate that Biafra leadership banked on nation like France for military support.

shymexx: I had to create this thread to ask questions and defuse the arguments, counter-arguments, and boring back and forth between Yoruba and Igbo posters on NL... This madness is getting boring now, and something has to be done before the 'fire' consumes everyone... Personally, I don't need Chinua Achebe's memoir to know what actually happened before, during, and after the war... I've a father and a late uncle who fought on the Nigerian side during the war(they joined the army as teenagers after Ore was invaded and Lagos was bombed several times by Biafran white mercenaries)... So, I have been privy to first-hand FACTS about the Biafran war since I was a kid... And I remember vividly that my father told me he joined the Nigerian army after Ojukwu boasted on Radio Biafra that he would be eating breakfast in Ibadan(can't remember the exact place in Yorubaland) by the next morning - and Awolowo subsquently pleaded with every Yoruba parent with more than two sons to allow one of them join the Nigerian army - to save Yorubaland from invasion...

The counter coup and pogroms against Igbos were done by both Northerners and Mid-Belters - and they were also the bulk of the Nigerian soldiers who fought during the war - why are my Igbo brothers and sisters not holding them responsible for the warhuh How come they only talk about the role(s) Yoruba people played during the war?? Yoruba people are also not more culpable in the 'genocide' than the other minority tribes in Southern Nigeria who joined the war after the Biafran invasion of their homelands... Yoruba had Awolowo, Adekunle, Obasanjo etc... Old Bendel had Ogbemudia, Ejoor etc... Rivers/Ijaw had Adaka Boro, Ken Saro Wiwa, Lt. Col. Abogo Largema etc... Calabar had Colonel EA Etuk etc.. Yoruba people played arguably the same role(s) as the other Southern tribes to end the war - however, why do Igbo people continue to blame only the Yorubas for their woes and the supposed 'genocide'?? Why not the Northerners who executed the counter-coup, pogroms, and subsequently invaded Igboland at the beginning of the war??

I'm tired of this never ending back and forth, it's getting boring now... If the two loud tribes are tired of Nigeria, get the hell out of the country, and let those who want to remain in the Nigeria live in peace... Nigeria has 250 tribes/ethnic groups - not just Igbo and Yoruba!!!!!!!

Over 200,000 comments on the internet in the last three days alone - you guys are sick in the head!!
The above is really the only issue I have against Ojukwu. I lost some relatives due to the said starvation - I actually lost relatives on both sides.

The blockade was designed to put a quick end to the war, but instead of Ojukwu calling it off, he used the food supplies which were coming to biafra through the red cross for troops, while women and children died in vain.

Instead of surrendering when it became obvious that the war had been lost, Ojukwu and his officers ambushed the Red Cross vehicles and took the foods to their friends and to their collaborators and to their children , while the e masses were suffering. It was these attacks on Red Cross food supplies which resulted in the complete termination of Red Cross activities in biafra. It was after the food supplies were completely cut off because of the activities of the biafran army that most of the starvation we read about took place. If there was genocide, it was perpetrated by Ojukwu and his officers for the reasons I've stated.

Its a shame that Achebe is now using these unfortunate events to make money. SMH
What an arrant nonsense. One wonders how many ambushes were staged and lorries of Red Cross vehicles carted away. Sometimes people tend to make unbalanced statements for the sake of them.

It was a game of Russan roulette to fly food and medical supplies to Biafra as the wild-eyed Egyptian, Australian and Nigerian Mig17 pilots were eager to down the slow-moving DC3s ferrying medicine to Biafra.

The incessant calls for disintegration of Nigeria are fueled by functional illiterates such as Robert J Clarke who slept through the cracks of Nigeria’s delinquent academic system. I concluded Robert Clarke is a delusional nitwit when I got to the portion where he said “We are not Israel that has been occupying Palestinian state for so many years”. There is no doubt the so-called “SAN” practiced law off the pages of obscure newspapers. If he had paid rapt attention to unbiased historical facts, he would have realized that Palestine was Israel and Jordan combined.

In his goofy statements about Bakassi, Eastern Region and Southern Cameroon, I guess nothing could be farthest from truth. Bakassi was under Calabar before the arrival of Europeans at Bight of Biafra as the Protection Treaty of 1883 between Obong of Calabar and Queen Victoria of UK suggested. Also, Bakassi was a contagious territory of Calabar before either Nigeria or Cameroon was declared independent.

One of the most unfortunate statements from the so-called SAN are “The Northern Camerounians decided to stay with Nigeria, but the Easterners who are the Bakassi and West Cameroun, as they were known then said no, that they had not been treated well by the regional government. Of course they were not the only ones that complained, Cross River also complained. So, they opted to go back to the French Cameroun”.

From the above quotation accredited to the quark called Robert J Clarke, one wonders when Northern Cameroon left Nigeria and became independent. The true of the matter remains Bakssai may or may not be part of what used to be called Southern Cameroon. However, Bakassi never constituted the entity called Southern Cameroon as the junk lawyer would want us to believe.

Political agitation is everyday activity of human beings. There were political elements in Nigeria who did not want Eastern Region to become a very large entity hence encouraged certain characters from Southern Cameroon to decamp from eastern region and join the Northern Cameroon to form the Republic of Cameroon. Even as I write the post, the political characters from Southern Cameroon are still agitating for sovereign nation to be known as Republic of Ambazonia.
