Pls learn to distinguish between Capitalism and Socialism. Capitalism is an economic system that is free market oriented and provide room for economic players to compete to with one another in the production of goods and services. Where as, socialism is an economic system run by the state in the sense that economic decisions are majorly taking by the govt. In socialism, the govt determine what to produce, where products will be produce, and which company to support. This economic system is highly characterize by MONOPOLY (Domination) for the production of goods and services by companies favoured by govt. In socialist economies there's little or no room for competition.
Nigeria at present practice mixed economy which is heavily tilted towards Socialism - the bane of Nigeria's underdevelopement. This economic system is the reason why the country's power and petroleum sectors is so underdeveloped.
Hope you see the difference? Socialist economies gaurantees no long economic development. Checkout world economic powers, they practice Capitalism. Even China, a communist (extreme socialism) country did away with socialism to develop their economy.

Your veneration of Dangote is based on the premise that he could write a good business plan?

So, in your reasoning, this is what it takes to thrive in a business after benefiting from ethno/political patronage that ensured he monopolized lucrative sectors of the local economy. Avail that privilege to any idiot and forget about the headache of writing a business plan.

I know many Nigerians have short memory, but Dangote's exploitative trajectory is still fresh.

Dangote does not need to write a business plan. He is a successful business man. It is you that needs go through the challenges and learning process.

And if you feel you are above same. Set up a business and manage appropriately

Now I'm sure I wasted my time engaging you. Before i quit, you said 35 billion naira in taxes, right? But have you heard about the Panama, Swiss and other papers leaks? Have you heard how much Nigeria loses in taxes and major contributors? Take solace in google.

You say Nigeria small businesses pay the lowest taxes in comparison with what obtains in other parts of the world, right? This one will be a long journey, so I'll leave you and google to it.

About your accusation that I am ethnic in outlook, I reject it totally. I prefer being a Nigerian to being an Ibo person. I believe in the capacity of each individual to contribute to progress. I believe in fairness, competition and sportsmanship, devoid of the feeling of entitlement.

My question for you is this. is it only Nigeria involved in Panama leaks? Even in the whole debacle of events, Nigeria is small fry when you compare the level of rot the leaks brough to light.

Even governments of countries were involved and so long as tax heavens exists, people will continue to take advantage of them.

Again, I said the problem with Nigeria is bigotry which is a broad statement directed at Nigeria in its entirety. I never directed at you personally neither did I mention any tribe, ethnic group nor religion.

Your quick assumption that I directed same to you just shows that you have both low IQ and dismal emotional quotient. My advice to you is work on the two aforementioned then come back for a well balanced intellectual discourse.

As per CAC records we have 300k registered and active SMEs while as per FIRS records only about 50k of same pay taxes.

My question where is the gap coming from? People register companies to add legitimacy to their business but trade in their personal names to avoid taxes. Yet ya'll cry foul because he gets concessions from govt. Maybe you should also seek solace in google for this anomaly.

Dangote is the reason the food vendor across the road with very bad attitude and who sells food in an unhygienic environment is not making sales

Dangote is the reason why the online retailer who sells wigs and hair attachment, who is very nasty on the phone and does not reply DM or WhatsApp enquiries isn't making sales.

He is also the same reason why the shady electrician/mechanic/plumber/site engineer isnt getting more jobs

He is the reason why the shady importer who brings in sub standard drugs thereby endangering the lives of Nigeria has been caught and his business closed down

He is the reason why Nigerians import expired foreign rice into the country, treat same with chemicals and sell to us, increasing our risk of colon cancer and other deadly ailments

He is the reading why FFK is a wife beater and corrupt person with no known source of income

It pains me to the bones of course. Why? Because small and medium sized businesses are taxed to the bones. These businesses (SMEs)are popular for creating employment and revenue. Yet, these businesses which employs less than a quarter of what is obtainable with the aforementioned types of business forms, are given all forms of concession running into billions of naira. This is daylight fraud and robbery on the citizenry. Foreigners are also granted impossible concessions if they would invest in the EPZ - which is another blanket term for saying the North - and for investing in foreign currencies into the country.

Let me summarize, foreigners and the likes of Dangote cannot never experience loss in business. If they do, there are many concessions enough to absorb it. For the average man wishing to start and develop a business, the indices are not favorable. There is 70-30% chance that he will not succeed. It takes ingenuity and immense hard work to break even for small businesses. Nigeria cannot be better, let alone be great under an unfair system.

What you fail to understand is that the economy needs big conglomerates like Dangote and Co to survive.

We are in an ecosystem and in this ecosystem, everyone has to fit in and play their roles. Think of this as a pyramid where Dangote is at the top of the food chain and he has other SMEs that depend on him and vice versa in a symbiotic manner.

There are small businesses today employing tons of people that won't be able to exist without Dangote and Co.

The thriving real estate sector around lekki-epe is because of the refinery he is building there. Is it the sub distributors on his Dangote Cement Distribution Scheme you want to talk about or same for his FMCG business all of which employ thousands of people both directly and indirectly? Or the construction company employing people all over the country? Is it the back ward integration and back to farm program he is currently sponsoring in the North to encourage farmers to return to their farms despite the security situation that you want me to talk about? Or the fact that he has set up a scheme where off takers are guaranted for farm produce thereby encouraging farmers to produce and also providing seedlings for same? All of which will help reduce the food crisis we currently face?

Or you think he does not grapple with the same issues every business faces in Nigeria?

So in your mind, destroying his business is the only recipe that will guarantee success for small business that don't even play same space with him. Anybody can invest in the EPZ and Free Trade zones, it is not the exclusive right of foreigners. Albeit the foreigners have seen the long term benefits of investing in these locations and they are capitalising on it. Nigerians with our get rich quick mentality and short term mindset haven't seen same.

You see the problem with Nigerians is that of ethnic, tribal and religious bigotry. And to challenge your claim, small business are not taxed to the bones, infact, Nigeria has the lowest tax collection regime in the world compared to the number of SMEs in circulation. You people just rant without any substance to back it up.

Despite the so called government concession that is giving ya'll a hard on, Dangote still paid about 35billion naira in taxes to government in 2019 across all his businesses. Even now FIRS has created a tax exempt policy for businesses with less than 25m annual turnover and I know most people look for ways to avoid paying taxes by doing business in their personal names.

Finally Nigeria is a capitalist system and capitalism is first and foremost about profit. If you want to operate in a socialist economy, please relocate to China or North Korea.

Ya'll want to enjoy the benefits of capitalism on socio economic policies. What kind of catch 22 situation is that?

Big grammar yet empty content. What business acumen do you have? Can you even write a business plan and implement to the latter?

Can you build a company from down up growing and expanding it both vertically and horizontally whilst also managing the visstitudes of the unstable business environment in Nigeria?

Do you even have the leadership acumen to manage a workforce of 10?. Talk is cheap and ya'll can hide behind your devices to critic.

I challenge you and will give 250k to produce a 10 year business plan for any product or service of your choice. Let's see if you are as good as the big grammar you are blowing up and down.

Dangote makes about 40% of cement revenue from exports to other West African countries, he declined offers to build a cement plant in Ghana because he felt that would be in direct competition to the back ward integration efforts in the country to create jobs and auxiliary support for small businesses, instead he has to grapple with paying tarrifs to get his cement into their market as an alternative.

He has also said that the plan is to export refined products from the refinery to other West African countries so with or without local sales, he will be fine

Dangote is the largest employer in the private sector and I know alot of the people ranting here are doing it out of pure jealousy.

All countries give some form of concession or the other to strategically important businesses.

When the privatisation exercise started, Ibeto Cement and co who were even bigger cement importers than Dangote then, had the opportunity to bid for acquire and a few of the government owned cement plants, but alas he refused and continued importing cement because it was easy and he was making a quick buck.

Dangote acquired same, took business risk, turned those moribund plants around, expanded his scope of operations to other West African countries and ya'll beefing him because he is now reaping and enjoying the benefits. SHAME ON YOU ALL.

My question to the Ibeto apologists is this-why has he not gone ahead and invest locally instead of is continued fixation on imports? Afterall, BUA Cement has also done same and we are seeing his business and networth increase daily.

Nigerians and their entitlement mentality. The man even offered to construct the entire stretch of the Oshodi Olodi Apapa Road for government yet ya'll still complaining, saying that government is giving him twice the amount for the construction as tax credit. Let me explain to you and thankfully Dangote is a publicly quoted company,if you want to know how much tax credit he gets from government , please go through his audited annual reports.

Finally, he is the only one currently building a brick and mortar refinery while other people with refinery licenses including your almighty Ibeto and Ifeanyi Uba etc are busy paying lip service to same. When he is done and becomes a giant controlling prices in the sector, ya'll start ranting again like a goat in heat.

Kpele Mr expert banker.

Mr Agbaje is one of the founding members of GTB, has been an ED since early 2000s, to DMD and then MD. His ten year tenor as MD is ending by FY 2020.

He has worked to deliver fantastic returns to shareholders along side Fola and the late Uncle T. GTB shares has given 3500% returns (in capital appreciation, bonus shares and dividend payouts) since their first IPO.

The first duty of obligation of the MD and board of any publicly quoted or privately held company is creation of wealth for shareholders. They owe no duty of obligation to you other than the monthly wage you are paid in exchange for services you render as an employee.

The moment you feel the employer-employee contract is no longer in your favour, you are at liberty to leave. On the flipside too, the employer can terminate the contract as business evolves and in response to business externalities.

The business of banking has evolved through the years. For e.g, I can't remember the last time I walked into a branch to process any transaction. I do everything online now (ATM, POS, Mobile App, USSD etc). With this paradigm shift will come changes to business operations and cost optimization ( though a tough route to take) is one of them.

Why not go and apply for license to run your own bank instead of trying to belittle the efforts of others?

Nigerians still see electricity as a public service that must be subsidised just as they see fuel.

And until we change this mindset, the required investment needed to guarantee 24/7 light won't be available.

Many people don’t ask why most Nigerians are praying and fasting for visas to be voluntary slaves in obodo oyinbo, where governments don’t generally subsidise utilities and consumption.

Please explain to the short myopic people on this forum.

Nigeria-a country where people want the benefits of capitalism with socialist economic policies.

We want light 24-7 yet we don't want to pay. Even the small they are struggling to give us, people still refuse to pay. Yet we want the Gencos and Discos to perform magic

Govt parastals alone are owning these Discos about 100b naira in unpaid bills. Throw in the NPF, Navy and military nto the equation and the amount is over 200billion. My question is how do we expect the Discos and Gencos to invest in critical infrastructure, if we refuse to pay and when cost benefit does not make sense?

As it is they are already lose about 7-10 naira per kilowatt generated from the moribund national grid infrastructure that is still with the govt then add energy theft and refusal our consumers to pay for consumption.

Ya'll think the NASS care about you? NAH, they are just using this to score cheap political points as usual.

Dear all,

I really need an advice. I currently work with one of the Nigerian banks. My monthly take home is about 450k and quite good. My major problem right now is that I have just been transferred from a Branch at one end of Lagos to another end of Lagos. All efforts to convince my boss to deploy me to a closer branch has proved abortive.

Going to work daily right now is a very difficult especially during this raining season and covid 19th period. I spend roughly 3-4 hours on the road when going to work and back home.

I am currently raising my kids on my own right now and dont know how I would manage when school resumes. Before now I drop them off on my way to work in the morning and my friend picks them up to her house in the afternoon till I get back.

I currently have a savings of 2million and would love to start a biz( I dont know what kind) as am comptemplating resigning and start a biz instead so that I can have time for my kids and not die due to stress

Please i really need advice for you all.

My honest advice, please keep your bank job for now. 3-4 hours commute to and fro work is a normal routine for most people in Lagos-self employed or otherwise.

Entrepreneurship is not an easy route in Nigeria especially when you are starting up. Besides 2m is really nothing depending on the kind of business you have in mind.

I will suggest you try and work around creating a balance so you can still retain your job at keast for now, have significant savings, have a full proof plan on what you want yo do as an entrepreneur before resigning.

Leaving a 450k per month job simply because you can't cope with a 3-4 hour daily commute esp in the midst of all the economic uncertainty is a really bad move. Starting a business with meagre funds might even be more stressful.

We are headed for a recession in the country because of covid 19+ oil price crash and consumer spending will be affected negatively along side rising inflation.

You can also consider moving closer to your new place of work to reduce the daily commute.

All the best.

Family / Re: The Biggest Mistake In Marriage Right Now For A Woman by deenee: 6:29am On May 23, 2020
KingSatan:

As a man, a father and a grandfather. I have lived life to an extent and this is my view on this subject.

The previous thread was simple and concise, "Never marry a woman who has no means of income".

But that is the truth!

Gone are the days when people marry "Obiageri's" according to the Igbos.
Back then, things weren't this bad. Considering the family setting in those days, women had no other role than to cook, birth, raise children and clean the house.

So their parents prepare them for marriage, teach them how to cook, satisfy a man and raise children. They also spend alot of time grooming their hairs, taking care of their skin (Some parents send their children to fattening rooms) and waiting to get married.

When we got married, we married to keep them at home and show off to our friends. Only a few of us married because of love. Some of our partners were not our choice but our parents.

So when you marry, your wife and children should always reflect your wealth and networth. Most especially, YOUR WIFE.

I repeat, back then things were not this bad and everyone knew their roles.

But in today's world, so many things have changed.

Women should bring to the table as much as they expect from the man.

Raising children costs alot of money and shouldn't be the responsibility of the man alone.

So many marriages have crashed on the alter of poverty or "One stream of income".

We must learn to tell ourselves the truth always.

Back then, you don't spend so much to raise a child. If he or she wants to go to the community school or follow the white man's way of life, you send them as a punishment. But those humble and loyal sons, follow you to the farm and when they come of age, you give them farmlands and wives if possible. But that's not the case anymore.

Apart from formal education abroad, I also encouraged my children to learn sellable skills. One of my son is a fashion designer and that is what puts food on his table in the UK. His college degree only reflects on his call cards.

I told this to my children (Daughters inclusive) never to marry a man or woman who has no verifiable means of income.

Money is needed to run a home in the 21st century. Alot of money!

We no longer live in mud houses or drink from pots.

As for "Entitlement", I think every couple should have that mentality depending on the context.

The man is entitled to his wife's emotional commitment. She is his wife and this also applies to the man.

I am tired of typing.

To be truthful, i warned my son's against mingling with an average African woman. They simply don't want to know the truth. They hate the truth with Passion and that is why true feminism failed woefully here.

In the Diaspora, most men who want peace of mind avoid African women because of their "Entitlement Mentality" and how exploitative they are.

Many of these women don't work but enjoy proceeds of child support from numerous partners. You think it's a coincidence? No it not. It was deliberate.

They just want to seat at home, get fat, enlarge their butts and walk up and down the street like a pussy cat that resides in Buckingham Palace.

Should I talk about Nigeria, where you meet an average Nigerian lady and realise that;

1. She is a college graduate because a "Man" sponsored her in school (Both of them are no longer together as a couple).

2. She has a roof over her head because a "Man" made that available (She has no intention of marrying him).

3. She uses the best smartphone because a "Man" bought it for her (Just another random man).

4. She has clothes on her body because a "Man" gave her money for shopping (Obviously he is "One of those mugus"wink.

5. She has food on her table because so many men send her money.

This same woman has no other skill but sexual skills. The only thing she can offer is "Sexual Intercourse", "Birthing Children" and "Companionship" but she expects the man to "Mark her birthdays with a brand new Escalade", "Buy her parents a new house and train her younger ones in school". Is that not exploitation?

This same woman hates her mother inlaw because she sees her as her rival. Anyway, women have always hated themselves from time immemorial, don't get moved when you see them shout in solidarity, it's just for a few seconds.

When asked about their contribution in the relationship or Marriage, some will say "I birthed children for him". But that's your natural default woman!

Even if you sleep with a sexually active mad man, you will get pregnant and birth for him.

Some will even say, "I satisfy him sexually. I gave him my body and soul". But that is same thing you did with your numerous ex lovers.

According to Pastor Sam Adeyemi, he said "If a woman does not help her husband financially, then how else does she want to help him".

In this age and time, it takes two adults who have a verifiable means of income to build a healthy family.

Cheers!

God bless you and your loved ones

But they took on risks and now they are living off their wealth. Eg Tony Elumelu with his foundation helping other young ones. that's the point I am making.

Now is the time to buy landed properties, some people are cash strapped and will do anything to raise money by laying off thier assets. I don't support building of house tho it's a tie down of limited cash . But like I said he should use a bit to buy land and watch it grow , while he invests the rest in his hustle.

Ok good for you. Please go and buy land both at the North and South poles and recognise as assets in your statement of networth.

The economic perspective which you very much don't want to talk about is the reason we are all here, arguing back and forth.

Let me recap again for you-poster has 11m and he is torn between building a house, renting or business expansion. So, basically insatiable wants and needs against limited resources which is Economics101.

It's funny how Nigerians equate land and house ownership with riches and wealth. For an average Nigerian, the moment they have 1m cash....boom they go and buy land and spend the next 6 or 7 years scrapping to complete the house losing alot of economic opportunities in the process.

Jeff Bezos just bought his first house like 3 years ago despite having been worth over 100billon dollars. Warren Buffet has only one house and he was already worth over 10 billion dollars before he bought it.

Property acquisition if it is not for commercial reasons is not worth it. That said one can invest in a nice house for residential purpose but only when you have built a reasonable portfolio of income generating assets.

Thank you and please stay safe.

FGN bond, investment grade commercial papers and a simple conversion to USD and fixing same is a good store of value.

Basically anything not giving you a return above inflation rate ain't worth it.

Definition of fixed asset:-assets which are purchased for long-term use and are not likely to be converted quickly into cash, such as land, buildings, and equipment.

That said any fixed asset that is not generating income to match its depreciation through wear and tear or its been obsolete is a liability.

Please we shouldn't allow class room accounting to confuse us. Even land that is said to appreciate in theory can be a liability in retrospect esp if one cannot easily convert the land to cash in time of urgent need.

Also there is a huge difference between been asset rich and cash rich.

Even from a asset perspective only-there are still wide gaps. E.g

Mr A who is worth 100m and lives in a owner occupied house of 25m with the rest of his networth in cash generating investments is way richer than Mr B who is worth 150m but lives in a 120m owner occupied residence with the rest of his networth in the saame class of investments.

The only way Mr B will termed to be richer than Mr A is if he can convert the residence to cash or a cash generating asset. Overall cash is king!

Otherwise we can all just walk into a bank and simply exchange our title documents for cash irrespective of where the property or fixed asset is located.

I think people need to look at his investment options from an economic profit point of view-comparing all the options against the opportunity cost of other investments

Finally, as i said in my earlier post 11m is and is not small money, depending on how we look at it.
And rushing to build a house or buy land will not be a top of mind investment option for me if i was in the poster's predicament.

you have a hustle that you started while in school.

despite the school distraction you were still able to save 11million and yet you are asking what hustle to engage in.

Tell us the truth, are you a Gee boy?

Nobody will make 11million in 6yrs of hustle and still be asking for direction, why not expand the so called hustle abi you be Yahoo boy.

Just a word of advice building a house is a tie down of cash, Jeje buy land fence it and allow it to grow or rent it out to Farmers/block makers while you use the rest to expand your hustle.

You are still young, now is the time to take on risk coz you have the years to recover.

House of 100m here will return a miserly 5-8m on rent, it's fu--cked up really, just buy land and fence it for safety.

First and foremost he is not young at 29. Tony Elumelu became bank MD at 33 years. Late Uncle T of GTB founded GTB alongside Fola Adeola and Segun Agbaje in their early 20s.

Secondly, it is very ok for him to know how to hustle and make money yet without any knowledge and direction about investments and wealth creation.

Finally, i agree with you, building now is not the best optimal investment but will not support purchase of land though at this point.

Pls dont listen to any of the get rich quick schemes suggested here and disregard spam mails because am sure you must have gotten like a million spam mails by now.

Nigeria is heading towards a recession. Infact i would say that we are already in one-just that Uncle Covid-1.9 is trying to take the shine of the recession and this is a double whammy for us.

From your original post and responses it appears that you still need to bit of exposure with regard to financial literacy. Yes, you have 11m which is and is not alot of money in Nigeria today-depending on the context. However, you are not wealthy because you are yet to discover how to make your money work for you.

My advice.....read books on wealth creation from warren buffet, napoleon hill etc....there are a few other classic books from not too popular authors that will also be insightful.

Now back to your question. Pls diversify by converting some portion of the 11m (like 30%) to USD to store value-make sure the USD is in a fixed deposit account. Make sure that your working capital is still intact and create a little buffer zone of cash around it so you can continue to do your business unhindered. It will be painful to have your savings tied down in iliquid assets when there is opportunity to use same for business.

In this period, cash is king because when recession hits full blown people with cash are the first to benefit because there will be alot of investmets (including houses) that will be on offer at ridiculous prices.

I personally wont advise you to build at this point
because the opportunity cost and economic profit of building will be negative considering the amount you have.

All tbe best!

Fine!

But if they are yet to receive the consignment, then their promises can said to be as good as failed because the Nigerian Port Authority will sure disappoint them either by delaying the delivery or at most fail to clear it for them.

The congestion at the port the last time I checked is 99.9% full to capacity. They can't take delivery of what so ever for now.

Congested ports or not, this is good. Besides am sure there will be some form of arragement to speedily clear the kits when they arrive.

Cacovid is managed by the the influential people in the private sector and am happy that there is no govt interference in their activities so no politics and there is accountability and transparency

It's hightime Nigeria stopped international sales of oil in full capacity.
Let us channel ample amount of the oil to a reservoir and save up for a better day.
Cut deals with some African countries and use their reservoirs if ours is filled

When we save enough, the Government should declare our refineries ''out of service".

After this Covid -19 pandemic, we begin to sell from our reservoirs for the main time, while the refineries will be under renovation.

And also very importantly is the need to diversify.

Govt should just hands out completely otherwise its just going to be another vicious cycle all over again.
