Actually, First Registrars. But I'm not basing my opinion on her alone, nor is it my claim that everyone doesn't work hard in Nigeria.

I worked at my uncle's sawmill in my teens, and I and his own children slaved for our dinner. I also worked for myself and wouldn't say I was lazy. And Nigerians who worked for me in my early days in UK found the pace rather hard going.

I was home ten years ago and struggled to get workers for my farm despite paying double the going rate. People would rather go sit outside Kami, the state rep's, house and collect than come work for me.

Fact is, a nation where many go night vigils instead of resting at night can not be as productive as where most get a good nights sleep. And if we can't clean our streets or generate constant electricity, we are either not hardworking or unknowledgeable.

But all that's anecdotal. Check were we are on a productivity by country list and tell me we are as productive as some.

Even our Gross national income is not to boast about.

I have never come across any rankings of dollar millionaires that put Nigeria above South Africa, but most rankings put Nigeria above South Africa in dollar billionaires rankings. And in any South African ( which I think concerns most Nigerians, always go and find out what percentage of the SA list are black and pit that number against yours,SA will always be the winner in millionaire status but Nigeria will bear us merciless in the dollar billionaire status.

I think this will explain the reasons behind this phenomenon more clearly;

Nigeria produces more billionaires because wealth is concentrated at the top. South Africa produces more Black millionaires because wealth is more evenly spread across a larger segment of the population.

South Africa has a more visible and substantial Black middle class, which grows steadily into millionaires.

Nigeria, many entrepreneurs may have significant influence or success, but it’s either informal or tied to a few massive deals, creating billionaires but fewer formal millionaires.

South Africa has had a longer history of formalized wealth accumulation among Black South Africans post-apartheid, partly due to policies like Black Economic Empowerment (BEE), access to property, and developed financial institutions.

Nigeria’s history and politics, corruption, and instability have limited wealth accumulation to fewer individuals at the very top.

South Africa: More developed financial markets, property markets, and formal sectors where wealth can grow steadily. Investments in stocks, businesses, and real estate allow more people to become millionaires.

Nigeria: Informal economy is huge, and while some people strike it rich in oil, trade, or tech, many people’s wealth isn’t fully captured in formal “millionaire” stats.
+
The last words in bold give you the real answer. Records are not our strength in this matter but I can tell you for free that NG has FAR many more dollar millionaires than black SA.

Have you ever been to Nigeria?
Foreign Affairs › Re: American Politics Thread: 2026 Midterm Elections Live! by DeepSight(m): 2:12pm On Dec 17, 2025
Lionessza6:
Yes, Nigerians have produced a high number of talented professionals who are excelling globally, and that’s commendable. But numbers alone don’t capture the full picture. South Africa has a different historical trajectory. Despite apartheid, we have a larger black middle class proportionally, more black-dollar millionaires, and a functioning public service. That’s a level of structural empowerment most African countries...including Nigeria are still building.

Nigerians abroad excel individually, but domestically, much of the wealth is still highly concentrated among a small elite. In South Africa, a bigger portion of the black population has real purchasing power, (even though whites still beat us there domestically)... property ownership, and business influence. We may have fewer globally scattered ‘stars,’ but our structural middle class and wealth distribution are arguably more advanced.

Many Nigerian professionals abroad achieve great personal success, but if you look at public institutions, service delivery, and governance, South African black professionals manage more functional systems at scale. Our ministries, local governments, banks, and professional associations operate more reliably, even under challenges, than those in Nigeria

Talent is important, but so is the ability to translate it into sustainable, collective progress. South Africa’s black population has a critical mass in the middle class and public service that ensures broad social and economic impact...something scattered individual brilliance abroad doesn’t automatically achieve.

In short, Nigeria produces impressive individuals; South Africa builds sustainable systems. One excels in global talent export, the other in local empowerment and functional institutions. Both are impressive in their own ways I guess.
+
Very well and thoughtfully written I must say and I agree with much you have said.

However I will contest the idea that SA has more black dollar millionaires. I doubt it very much.

This is an important point you have made. A sad fact of war is that civilians often get killed along with the intended targets. Despite this fact, war is unavoidable sometimes, and the terrorists must be made to understand that they can not hide behind civilians lest they are all carpet-bombed as a regrettable yet unavoidable consequence of aerial bombardment.

The Nigerian Airforce should endeavor to be more precise and accurate in their future bombardments, and in so doing they will also derive a wealth of intelligence data that can be forwarded to the US when they too commence their bombing of terrorist targets in Northern Nigeria.
+
The difficulty distinguishing between terrorists and civilians is truly significant. And where the NAF may even care, a foreign power may not.

The instances of drones bombing weddings and other family gatherings in Iraq and other places are too many to mention.

The quantity and quality of professional expertise in various fields. If you compare both locally and in the diaspora, NG has one of the biggest and most accomplished classes/ sets of professionals scattered all over the world. In science, in arts, in finance, name it.

I am speaking generally, but specifically in terms of comparison to the black African population in SA which still has a long way to go on account of the many inequalities of the apartheid era.

Funny this.

My sister, an accountant with like 20 years work experience in Nigeria, recently completed her masters in UK and got a job.

"Damn, they make you work for every penny here", she told me.

She'd arrive at work in Lagos at 7am, she said, because leaving for 8am when her office opened meant she wouldn't get there by ten. She'd do about an hours work, and by noon its break time, during which she'd go shopping at market and arrive back by 2 and potter around till 5 and be done and home by 7. Whereas, in UK she gets a 45 minutes break, and despite working from home three days, its work every single minute.

"How can we expect to develop as a nation working like we do back home when the competition here is draining every minute for the money they pay", she laments, glad she finally came over saying she's learnt more about work in a year in UK than she did in 20 years in Nigeria.

Hard working my toe, says I, but most wouldn't know of it unless they travel out of Nigeria.
+
Let your sisters experience speak for her alone as this is not the experience of everyone. Sounds like she worked in one of the laid back govt offices in Nigeria. In the private sector things are tasking, fast-paced and demanding, and no one gets by via pottering around or wasting time.

As a South African, this is exactly why we laugh at the lazy claim that “other Africans are more hardworking.”

What many call hard work across much of the continent is actually time lost to chaos. Long commutes because systems don’t work. Long days because nothing runs on schedule. Presence without productivity. Survival dressed up as virtue.

South Africa, for all its problems, still runs on structure:fixed working hours, enforced deadlines, regulated labour standards ,institutions that expect output, not excuses.

That’s why people from across Africa come here ...and why the same people who brag about being “hardworking” suddenly complain that South African workplaces are too strict, too formal, or too demanding.

Your sister’s UK experience proves the point perfectly. When Africans leave disorganized systems and enter structured ones, they don’t discover they are more hardworking... they discover what real work actually is.

So no, South Africans aren’t insecure or lazy. We simply understand something others romanticize away....a nation doesn’t develop on hustle, it develops on structure, discipline, and accountability.

Listen.

Pride, unnecessary arrogance is a needless thing. Not only is it needless it often takes one backwards in life. It makes one unteachable. Hubris, arrogance, these things destroy and they actually make one less of a person and diminish character. When I say this, I am also talking from some measure of experience as needless pride has harmed me in life in the past. I mean this advice sincerely, you are free to take it or leave it.

Now, one thing which almost all human beings are guilty of is condemning in others the exact things we ourselves do and failing to see when we do those exact things which we condemn.

When I say that you worship Trump it's not because you don't agree with me simply. Its from the level of things he does and says which you are able to defend.

When I say I see needless pride in you - and you are not the only one - it is because you can never concede a point no matter how crystal clear it is. One should have the grace to be able to say, okay, I see this or that point, or I didn't quite understand that properly. It makes one bigger, more sophisticated, more refined.

You are free to take these pieces of advice seriously or not, your life your choice.

Yes na, under Tinubu's government while he looks away because the looting going on in his administration is a bazaar...

That's why I laugh when Tinubu, his cabinet and people like you claim importation is what is killing the naira, you see what you posted here is the biggest killer of the naira, just Imagine just one official under Tinubu using 5 million dollars for only children school fees, then you can imagine how many million dollars he has also stolen for keeping his children abroad, with various cars, houses and domestic staff, then the ones he has also stashed in in his bank accounts.

We should be looking at over 100 million dollars without producing a pin for Nigeria in return or adding value to Nigeria, all he did was steal available naira convert to dollars and achieve all of that, so no value in return to the economy, just thrashed the naira and made it of lesser value, importation still adds value, serious value to the economy for every dollar that leaves something comes back in return...

Now this is just one government official and we are talking of thousands in Tinubu's regime right from the presidency doing this at the same time and you expect the naira to have value.

And when one understands the level of corruption in this country with this one man as an example, then one will also know that rather than remove subsidy to punish the masses, the better thing to do would be to fight down corruption because if you reduce the corruption by even ten percent, what will be saved will more than cover the subsidy - which was corruptly ballooned by the way.

Yesterday (Tuesday, December 16, 2025), at a White House Hanukkah reception, Donald Trump condemned the recent Sydney, Australia, shooting as a "horrific and antisemitic terrorist attack" and declared that "All nations must stand together against the evil forces of radical Islamic terrorism".

In the last few days antisemitic terrorist have a carried out attack
_The Brown university shooting target was the leader of the Republican chapter who supported Israel. The shooter has not been identified.
_Australia saw a terror attack
_An Jewish MIT professor of nuclear and electrical engineering was found killed in his home.

I would hope your criticism of Obama was of downplaying if not outright coverup of Islamic terrorism.

Not so fast. You haven't criticized Donald Trump. You merely disagreed with what he said, saying he should not have said so. You have not categorically condemned it as the repugnant and vulgar shameless celebration of violence that it is. You have not spoken to the hypocrisy of him claiming that the left did such regarding Kirk and then proceeding to do the same thing now. You have not said just how callous it is to attribute the death to so called TDS. You have only made a very guarded soft statement that he should not have said what he said. That's not criticism. That can pass as preferential advise.

It still surprised me though that you didn't fall down in worship of the statement.

Can you see just how your own hatred has caused you to put hateful evil words into the mouth of your own God? God doesn't say this in the Bible. He actually says the opposite.

The verse you are thinking of is 1 Corinthians 2:9, it talks about the beautiful things God has prepared are for those who love him, not those who hate him.

"However, as it is written: 'What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived'—the things God has prepared for those who love him." — 1 Corinthians 2:9

This is taken from Isaiah 64:4 which says - "Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him."...

*Common natural sense already tells us, if you see the good, then you can see the bad. The Bible even mentions His Right Hand, yet no one remembers to check for His Left Hand"

So, the thread shows that it is you who is the lieyar!

For after my answer you did not have any reasonable thing to say other than to accuse me of making an "inference" saying

'It is you that is inferring the opposite by force."

To which I replied that

"Is inference not part of speech?
If you say you are not at home, have you not impliedly also said that you are outside your home?
Or if you say I will give my employees Christmas bonuses, do you not impliedly also say that you are not giving Christmas bonuses to people who do not work for you?"

Only for you to even agree with me and proved what I already said by you saying

That is completely different. If I say I am inside my house of course that means I am not outside.

Therefore, you have proven that I am not wrong for thinking the way I did.

All these are clearly laid out in black and white for God and all to see and Judge
+
