Back in 1994, I was very young but could remember how we used to go pack sawdust at sawmills to make Abacha stoves because kerosene was unaffordable. I bet a bag of rice wouldn't be more than #1000 back then. But today someone will bring out a 1994 price list and say "Haaa! When Nigeria was still great."

If the girl broke the rules of NYSC, what exactly is Sowore expecting to do? Prevent her from being disciplined?
There is also report from the girl that NYSC threatened the girl. What exactly constitutes a threat? I think she was asked to delete the video, which in my view was to protect her from the fame she wanted.
It never ends well.
If we do not run a society by the rule of law, a time would come when people would commit murder and the likes of Sowore would egg him on because they hate the government of the day.
We'd also ask the authorities to abandon selective justice so that they'd not be seen as being biased. This is with reference to the misnomer of "repentant bandits" or "repentant terrorists". Let them face proper trial and let them be severely punished.

BreconHills: The interlocked nature of fuel and fx means you cannot deregulate one without the other. They are Siamese twins. Our FX is heavily dependent of crude oil exploration and refining. Petrol is a subset of that refining. The market and costs are USD. Everything in the oil Industry which was my tax focus way back is denominated in USD; rigs, equipment, supply/bunkering and even salaries. So the idea of phased deregulation is a nonsense.
If you dereg fx and allow marketers to earn unbooked earnings from supplying neighbouring countries with subsidized fuel, you inflate daily supply figures and reduce amounts allocated for exports.
The rising prices on electricity, data and mobile calls is a fall out of deregulation. Higher costs mean that to provide equal or better services prices must go up. Over time competition will force down prices. The alternative is to revert to NITEL type service standards.
Nobody improves services without profit headroom. Creating that headroom means higher prices across all utilities. Until deregulation only importation made sense. Now NG has a positive trade balance of $18bn due to non oil exports rising faster than imports.
There is still a lot to do; healthcare, power, security, mining etc. But all these are impossible without addressing the funding gap.
Nigeria had no choice. It's balls were in the firm grip of inadequate FX and inadequate FX Pause. I will try to make this brief, but please take it all in: If you remove subsidies on petrol, the price goes up (it went up by 200% in one day, a thing which had never happened in history in any counrty in the world). Now, you are importing that petrol (Dangote had not come on stream). So you are paying USD for it. If you devalue your currency at the same time, you immediately have to pay much more for it again - because you have doubled the cost of the USD you use to buy the petrol. This is why it is self defeating. I will pause here and see if you absorb this point first. |

BreconHills: Let me answer your question or take up your challenge even though I am not satisfied with your bona fides in this discussion- and I fo not intend to spend precious time throwing bricklayer.
The Governmrnt should have thought out CNG and provide incentives and infrastructure for its deployment with more energy and focus.
The Government should have opened the borders earlier to food imports. True there was a laudable attempt to protect farmers but the farmers have shown that they do not need protecting. Profiteering and food inflation which are the major area of public discontent would have been significantly addressed.
Third _ Federal Allocation - The additional revenue ( approx x3) cannot be withheld under the constitution but moral station and pressure should have been imposed on governors to justify their expenditure. There is a huge causation between fx prices and FAAC releases.
Let me give a fourth - the privatization of NNPC should have been one of the big targets of this first term. NNPC should embrace the highly successful NLNG model ( which is was privileged to work on) to create an efficient and transparent company with unlocked capital. The concept of the Ministey of Finance as a Holdco should have been employed earlier to cover NNPC and the unbundlingnof the Railway corporation into Railtrack, Regional Services and Regulator and Standards Commission.
A lot of these would have helped address the impact of deregulation ( which I agree with. NIGER 🇳🇪 is a case study for the success of fuel dereg) on citizens while unlocking the value locked up in NNPC, Rail and other non performing assets. I am nothing if not honorable. I reciprocate and answer your challenge. 1. The Tax Reform Bill is positive. However certain elements there are worrisome such as the attempt to tax Free Trade Zones. 2. There has been some balancing act in key Federal Agencies which were once the sacred preserve of the North. I previously feared that we would never see a Southern EFCC Chairman in the past, for example. 3. The security situation in the North seems to have somewhat improved, even if just marginally. There you go. Bona fides. |

BreconHills: Well if you were born in 1959 you will definitely have seen more of Nigeria than me.
I hold the position that Government is not black or white. It is nuanced as most of life is.
I can agree that the governments policies have made life harder for its citizens. I cannot accept that it is stupid or in error. I cannot see any alternatives to any of the policies of the government.
If you have alternatives then spell them out so that we can have a considered discussion. If you don't see a problem with removing petrol subsidies at the exact same time as floating the naira, and if I have to explain how defeatist that is to you sir, I don't think we can have any considered conversation. Indeed it is already obvious that you are an extremist since you say that you cannot see any alternatives. That alone says enough. Anyone who says that cannot have any objective, serious or nuanced conversation. And that makes it doubly odd that you use the word "nuanced". . . Doubly odd that you deny that things are black and white, when for you, they clearly are. Have a good afternoon. PS: 1959 makes you far older than me. But heading to fifty, I am no child either. |
Politics › Re: Update About The Nsyc Lady, Rita Being Threatened By Nysc by DeepSight(m): 9:51am On Mar 17, 2025 |
BreconHills: Fair enough. I respect your opinion.
I have probably seen more of Nigerias nuances and context than you and I am probably privileged in having a ring side seat, so I fully understand when people make polar back and white statements. But let me say this, you might not understand it but there may be others that will.
The art of government is making vested interests agree to destroy what they have built and rely on in exchange for an infinitely better future.
If you can understand this, you will understand why being in government is harder than talking about government.
Partisianship and hatred of political foes makes one stupid because it imposes a Messiah vs Evil understanding on a complex situation. It is simple, convenient but stupid.
Start by listing three things that this government has gotten right. If you cannot find three there is no reason for us to discuss because you are in the messiah vs evil matrix.
Want to try? I struggle to find the three, sorry. I might, just might be older and more experienced than you appear to guess. We can have different points of view, that's fine, that's in fact excellent. However I will throw you a question of my own. Read what you wrote, the philosophical question about destroying things inorder to build a better future and please point me to one single government in history, no matter how sinister, no matter how corrupt, no matter how tyrannical - that that statement could not be used in excuse of. There is none. That statement would defend Hitler's government just as surely as it would defend Idi Amin's, Stalin's, Pol Pot's, Mobutu's Abacha's, Napoleon's, Henry the VIII's, name it. Once you recognise that your argument is a blanket one which can be employed by the Devil himself to suit his purposes, then you know you have a non-argument. By contrast there are many terrible things one can point to at the snap of a finger regarding this government. This President is, like the poor NYSC Girl rightly said, a terrible president. He is also deeply corrupt, insincere, greedy and grossly insensitive - and this is not to speak of his shadowy past. You appear to attempt to bestow him with some sort of nobility when you speak about the art of governance and the willingness to destroy for a better future. This is pure sophistry. You are watching a naked emperor and adoring his fine robes. However I will take up your challenge on the condition you take up the same in the reverse, namely name three things this government has done wrong. And oh - as an aside, if I am not mistaken, I saw a post where you appeared to defend the Lagos Calabar Road Project. If it is true as you said, that you have a background with the top-5 in consulting, I would honestly expect you to be the first one to point out all the legal and ethical wrongs about it. However, it appears you wear rose-tinted glasses when it comes to this deeply corrupt president, who has set himself the target of achieving the greatest suffering for the greatest number. |

Flows001: Very funny .
Go and check history, the JEWS who resided in Arab countries in the 7th century revolted vehemently against Muhammed and Islam, they never forsook nor substituted their identity and religion at all, reason why Muhammed had so much hatred towards them and the Christians.
The JEWS were the ones who were paying the "Jizyah" because they refused to convert to Islam but were still staying in Arab countries. In fact, the young lady who poisoned Muhammed and his gang, the poison that instantly killed one of Muhammed's fighters, and eventually led to the slow and excruciating death of Muhammed was a young JEWISH lady, she was a slave that was captured by Muhammed and his gang during a raid on her village..
There can only be ARAB-ISRAELIS, and these are Arabs whose parents or grandparents decided to stay back in Jerusalem when the JEWS captured the Old City from Jordan during the Six day war in 1967. They refused to vacate the city despite the falling into the hands of the JEWS, and had to succumb to the Israeli authority. Today, they have taken up residency permits, many of them now have Israeli passports, they now participate in Israeli politics and even take parts in Military services in Israel. The State of Israel is a democracy, and a lot of Arab-Israelis would prefer to remain under Israeli control, rather than be under the "Palestinian" authority.
The land of ISRAEL is the promised land for the children of Israel who make up the 12 tribes of Israel. There is absolutely nothing anybody can do about it because YAHWEH himself had given this land to them as an inheritance. Let the so called "PALESTINIANS" trace and return back to their original roots: either Egypt, Jordan, Syria or Lebanon...
There was NEVER any ARAB on that land during the Times of King David and King Solomon, the "conquering" nature of Islam pushed the Arabs into claiming the land, even going as far as building a Mosque on the exact spot where King Solomon's TEMPLE once stood, and claiming that Muhammed ascended from there, which Muhammed? The one that was killed by a lady and died shamefully, or another one Illiterate. |
