toneyb:
The "soul" uses the brain to apprehend the world?

Here is a post from the link that was provide which shows how flawed your hypothesis is.

"The soul, apparently, must be somehow separate from the brain. There are a number of gaping flaws in this idea (as is often the case with religious pseudo-science). The most obvious one is this: If a person has a major physical change to their brain (due to injury, surgery, disease or oxygen starvation), it will often bring about a major change to their personality. Many people who suffer accidents that cause brain injury also undergo a personality change. It used to be common practice to lobotomise (surgically remove the frontal lobes of the brain) dangerously violent people as this brought about a dramatic change in their personality - they became much more subdued and docile.

There have been several cases where a person went into hospital for an operation, something went tragically wrong, perhaps with the anaesthetic, and the person suffered massive brain-damage as a result. Healthy, thinking, reasoning person before the operation, and a vegetable afterwards. What happened to the soul? Did the material drugs damage the immaterial soul?"
Sorry, but this says nothing.

Will a defective tool not hamper the performance of its principal just as clearly suggested in the example you gave of a violent person?

What do you understand by the word “tool?”

Not good enough.

I hope you understand that you are suggesting to me the reverse;

Namely that the brain is the independent creature in itself and the man (with physical body, legs to walk about, etc) is its tool.

Abeg joooooooooooor!

No it doesn't work and I'll break it down for you with an analogy.

I am quite capable of parasiting off my brother.

I am also quite capable of parasiting of my wife.

I can even parasite of my co-workers.

Does that mean that I can sustain myself without parasiting of anybody?  Does that mean that I can exist independent of parasiting of someone just because I have a variety of means of doing so?
Your very words affirm that:

1. YOU EXIST (Thus the information exists)
2. YOU ARE NOT YOUR BROTHER, YOUR WIFE OR YOUR CO-WORKER (Thus the information is not the brain, or the mechanical brain, or the microchip, but is contained within them)

This already says a lot. For one thing it affirms the existence of the immaterial part.

If I understand you correctly, you are asking if that immaterial part can exist without a material “container”, “host” or “cloak” if I may use these terms.

Does it not strike you that what seems to be required is the “enabling environment” (if I may borrow a Nigeria political cliché) for the parasite to exist?

The parasite IS THERE. Just as the information is there.

What it requires is the environment to support it, and in this you are right.

But what you miss I believe, is the implication of the fact that a different environment corresponding with the nature of the parasite will enable it to sustain itself.

Thus once the “information” loses its “enabling environment” – in this case the physical body – death occurs.

This very fact suggests that the information is no longer within the defective host, and lies outside of it, yes?

Now I ask you; is there any logical problem with an immaterial thing resting in an immaterial environment? Or put differently – an abstraction being part of abstractions?

It is my personal belief that the information being immaterial is naturally held within an immaterial environment: the world of forms: which some refer to as the spirit realm.

For me it is sufficient to state that the information being immaterial is therefore abstract and rests in abstraction.

This is altogether different from stating that it does not exist any longer, for God itself is the ultimate abstraction.

If absolutely every aspect of human behaviour can be caused by the brain then what does the Soul do?
I would have thought that the brain is a tool via which the soul apprehends the world. Of course if the tool is defective, apprehension would be defective or impossible.

The question now is, can pure information exist without it being encoded on some sort of material or the other. I mean, the mechanical brain, the microchip etc are all material and so the information exists in some material form still. What about purely abstract information?
If the information can be removed from one material thing and placed in another material thing, that deductivey affirms that the information exists independently of either of the material things.

Christianity Etc › Re: Mind-body Problem by DeepSight(m): 2:35pm On Jan 06, 2010
Perhaps i may assist.

It appears to me that the analogy of splitting a brain may have certain problems: and more importantly it has a number of holes through which the escapist materialist may seek to divert attention and ask endless questions.

Let us rather come up with a different analogy:

Again, it is the year 2097, and mankind has discovered a way to make mechanical brains - in much the same way as mechanical parts are made nowadays for hearts, glands, ears or limbs.

Thus Tom's natural brain is defective or has a terrible tumor, or cancer. . .

We take out all the information in the natural brain and transfer it into the mechanical brain - a computer which will be implanted into his head in place of the brain.

Questions –

1. Where was Tom during the period of transfer of information?

a. In the original brain

b. In the machine

c. In between

i. He was not in the original brain as it is being discarded

ii. He is not yet in the machine, as it is just being “filled” with the information

iii. If he is in between, the materialist worldview collapses instantly – as it is thereby shown that the man may exist without a physical brain. . .

2. Let us ask: what if that information is stored for a while on a micro-chip, prior to being placed in the new mechanical brain?

a. Is Tom in the Micro-Chip

b. Is the Micro-Chip Tom

c. Where is Tom?

3. Since it is asserted by the materialist that “the brain is the man” – now that the brain has been replaced by a mechanical computer (or a micro-chip), can we also with equally-footed logic assert that “the computer is the man” or “the micro-chip IS THE MAN?”

4. If the information passed from the brain to the computer is what defines TOM the man, then clearly that information itself is TOM – Not the brain, and not the computer – but the information. Accordingly and automatically it follows that the materialist assertion that the man is the brain must fail as the man can now exist without the brain. Rather the information stored within the brain is now what is more important, and is transferred to a computer or a microchip which can perform the function of the discarded brain? Once this is accepted, as it per force must be, then it has been incontrovertibly shown that the brain is not the man but that it holds something else which defines the man – and which may be transferred outside the brain!

5. If that information can be transferred outside the brain, then there is no reason to suppose that it cannot be transferred to another brain for example in the form of a baby. . . thus. . .reincarnation?

Se.xy stuff. . .Puristic materialism is a joke. . .

Absolutely.

The highlighted is what I wanted to explain to the guy who posted the image of a starving kid. At our level, it's a starving kid, and it looks terrible, but at the ''God level'', it's similar to God hypothetically scratching his left wrist.

As he scratches, the cells under the His 'skin' get battered as one cell smashes into another, knocking it out. The other cells recoil in horror. 'What an evil world we live in', they'd lament. 'What did that poor cell do to deserve this horrible fate?'

Yet to God, nothing at all has happened!!

He only scratched his wrist for a couple seconds!!

lol

NB I know this analogy is a bit of a simplification, but not by a lot to be honest.
I am sorry, but this is frankly meaningless.

You are yet to answer the conundrum of purpose and motivation.

If its all virtual reality, then what is its purpose? See the question on purpose I raised here –

https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-375644.0.html

You stated very clearly that it’s all a game: In reaction to that I wondered what sort of game a supreme deity would be enjoying by expressing himself through starvation of children, for example.

It makes far more sense to think that human spirits are within a process of spiritual development, hence all the trials and tribulations in the world; and not that it’s a macabre game being played by some whimsical and careless deity?

Get real.

Finally you are yet to respond to what I laid out here:

And philosophically, it must collapse; for its suggestion, I hope you realize, is that the only purpose of creation was the formation of evil.

This is the direct implication of your surmise: because creation involved bringing into existence “individualized” parts of consciousness – thus “separating” infinite consciousness into parts. You yourself stated that “separation” is the basis of evil, whereas “oneness” is the basis of good.

Thus, if God wanted all things to be good, then he would never have created any “individuals.” All would have remained one, indivisible great oneness.

I hope you can see that your surmise leads irrevocably to the conclusion that creation was only done for the purpose of introducing “divisions” and thereby evil.

On this ground, your summation must fail in its entirety.
Any takers?
Christianity Etc › Re: What Do You Do In The Name Of Your Worldview? by DeepSight(m): 1:40pm On Jan 05, 2010
Some people are forced into doing certain things by their religion. Paying tithes for example.

Not everyone is generous or charitable at heart. But for many people, giving to the poor is a ceremonial part of their religion.

Doubtless, doing such things ceremonially and without gut feeling is empty and almost valueless in spiritual terms.

For me, as you well know, i do not have a religion: my worldview, other than the fact that i categorize myself as an empirical and intuitive deist, centres around humanism.

This is my belief.

It goes without saying that if i did not have a humanist worldview, i will see no big point in going the extra mile to be charitable to strangers.

Without a doubt therefore, belief does colour behavioural patterns.

Now understand clearly and do not muddle this up: I am not saying that it is not possible for other persons outside my own worldview to be charitable as well: they certainly can. I am saying that what informs MY being charitable is my humanist tendency.

Thanks Prizm.

By reasonless intelligence i actually mean intelligence that exists without a reason i:e - a purpose within the universe.

What is the purpose of man within nature or within the universe?

I doubt very strongly that nature produces ANYTHING that it does not need.

Common observation has informed the age-old maxim that nature abhors a vacuum.

Why would nature "produce" man, with all his intelligence, if he serves no exact purpose therein.

The reality is that nature would not do such a thing - it has not been shown to work in this way.

Are evolution and creation mutually exclusive?
Christianity Etc › Reasonless Intelligence? ? ? by DeepSight(op): 2:05pm On Jan 04, 2010
When the idea of the existence of beings (humans) in a void of chance, or as a result of chance is mooted by the atheist, i am dumbfounded by the bizzare absence of basic recognitions inherent therein.

This is because the best postulations till date concerning the reasons for a need for anything to develop into its current form centres around a need; i:e: a need for survival, or self defence. . .these needs of course form the core plank for natural selection, as the need for survival, for example, will lead to the development of features suited to survival and the extinction of species unable to develop such features as against the flourishing of species able to develop the needed features.

In all lines of reasoning therefore, development tends to centre around a requirement or a function.

Thus I in terms of cosmological reasoning i ask:

     1. Did the singularity (or whatever one may term the pre-big-bang state) need an expansion? Why could it not remain a singularity - as it may well have been for all eternity in the past?

    2. Did the resultant Universe need living organisms? If it did not need them, why did living organisms develop?

    3. Did the Earth need mankind?

Scientific thoughts progress around the idea of development by necessity or requirement to suit a function
(E.g: a creature develops sharp teeth for the function of killing prey, or bright colors for the function of attracting a mate).

What function did nature require mankind for, such that it produced mankind?

Does Nature produce ANYTHING that it does not need?

Are there reasonless voids or gaps in nature?

The idea of a reasonless intelligent being such as man is the most splendid contradiction the atheist can be saddled with.

Is the very existence of intelligence consistent with purposelessness?

Viaro -

1. Could you assist to distinguish between "the soul" and "the spirit."

2. If man is said to become a living soul (= "living creature" according to the hebrew you laid out) upon the breath of life being breathed into his nostrils - then clearly prior to that act he was not a "living creature". . .pray tell. . .what was he then? And if not a "living creature" prior to the breath of life, could he at that point be called a "man?"

Or simply a lump of clay. . .a lifeless statue which no person can reasonably address as a man anymore than a barbie doll may be addressed as a woman.

I Fear that you are too caught up in word sequences (i.e: man became a living soul. . .) and that reading between the text might be more apt than strict reading of word sequences.
Christianity Etc › Re: Life Out Of Dust-the ‘miracle’ Of ‘evolution’ by DeepSight(m): 9:53pm On Jan 03, 2010
Viaro, i do hope you have averted your mind to the fact that only the physical body is said to be formed of the dust of the ground.

"God breathed into him the breath of life and man became a living soul" - is surely enough to suggest that the quality of being a soul (i:e: the real man) came from the "breath" - which is not dust.

So Man (according to the bible text) is not made from dust per se: only the physical aspect is made from dust: the real man (the soul), in bible terms - and this rhymes with my mind: arises from the "breath" of God - which is certainly not said to be dust.

Hope i'm coming across.

I state it again:

Since the origin by natural implication rests before (i.e: precedes) the universe and since we cannot move beyond a singularity, then any analysis (i.e: science) based on physical laws within this universe cannot apprehend the realities preceding it as such must per force be said to rest in a preceding dimension absolutely unknown to this dimension.

Deal with it through logic, Tony, not escapist laziness and references to my postulations which are not at issue here.

Where is Toneyb? ? ?

I need your response before 2009 runs out on this -

Deep Sight:
Modern science CANNOT EXPLAIN IT.

The reason is simple:

Since the origin by natural implication rests before (i.e: precedes) the universe and since we cannot move beyond a singularity, then any analysis (i.e: science) based on physical laws within this universe cannot apprehend the realities preceding it as such must per force be said to rest in a preceding dimension absolutely unknown to this dimension.
And this -

viaro:
[edited.]

I didn't say that you argued evolution as dealing with the origin of living things. In my previous post, I had a parenthesis for what I was referring to - "(as in your initial post)" - where you had indicated that modern science can explain "all of these phenomena" such as . .
* the origin of the universe,
* the design of the universe,
* and the origin of living things.
What discipline in 'modern science' can explain the origin of living things, toneyb?

Abiogenesis does not even come close to 'trying' - that is the point. If anything in abiogenesis could be put forward as possibly able to explain the origin of life, we should have seen some of these - but what has emerged from abiogenesis is mere speculation that continue to embarrass us all.

The 'beginning' of the Universe is not to be confused for the 'ORIGIN' of the Universe. The BB does not say anything about the 'origin' of the singularity from which the Universe emerged - that is why it is important to know where we are starting our discussion, and for that reason I mentioned Plank Time.

Modern science could explain a lot of things; but the particular things you have indicated is not what modern science has shown itself capable of doing, to wit: 'the origin of the Universe' and 'the origin of living things'. One may not need to invoke deities or atheistic materialism in these things; but the atheist who make such huge assumptions about what modern science 'can' do, still himself has to show us the most basic of all things: how 'nature' came into existence completely on its own to produce an ordered and orderly Universe. The moment one asks questions like this, the typical response from the atheistic naturalist is to flag a disclaimer that his worldview does not deal with such kinds of 'origins'.

No, it is the other way round. No one here is begging to discard the scientific processes involved in any explanations; rather, you seem to be the one making claims about what modern science 'can' do and yet completely discarding the processes involved in science! grin

^^^ Escapism, Toney.

I did not say God by Default.

YOU stated that science "CAN" explain the origin of the universe.

I positively assert that it cannot.

In case you missed it, this is my reason again -

Deal with that. I hope you can absorb it intoto.

Instead you descend into contradictions. . .in one breath you say that science can explain everything, in another breath you say that science does not have the answers for every query. . .

And NO: do not foist that “God by default” thing on me: I have labored too hard on this forum setting up my objective arguments for the existence of God for anybody to accuse me of adopting “God by default.”

Please Toney, if Modern Science "CAN" explain it, then just go ahead and explain it so that we shut up completely? ? ? ?

Modern science CANNOT EXPLAIN IT.

The reason is simple:

Since the origin by natural implication rests before (i.e: precedes) the universe and since we cannot move beyond a singularity, then any analysis (i.e: science) based on physical laws within this universe cannot apprehend the realities preceding it as such must per force be said to rest in a preceding dimension absolutely unknown to this dimension.

Indeed this is the very postulation that agnostics re-characterize to assert that God (if existent) must be absolutely unknowable.

Science thus cannot explain the origin. Not now. . .and not ever.

A FEW POINTERS, though, may be found in philosophical reasoning.

I just revealed to a new Nigerian friend that just came here recently that I am an atheist and he was stunned grin, He asked my why I was an atheist and I told him, We began discussing about the stories he has been made to accept as the basis for his existence since childhood and he was very uncomfortable and began throwing and the normal mantra at me. . . Jesus loves you bla bla bla. . .When we get to heaven we will ask god those question. . .believe and save yourself from hell. . .bla bla bla. . .He got so uncomfortable with my questions and left feeling scared and believing he meet the mythical satan grin. . . That really got me thinking abou religious beliefs and its endless stories and this my own conclusion. . .To control people and make them believe and hold unto what you want them to believe you instill fear into them. You give them a loophole and show them that they are nothing without your stories, You don't have to fear anything if you worship a story. If you question the story, the story will hurt you by sending you to the most awful place imaginable for eternity. Everything good you see is because of this story. Everything bad you see is merely a test from the story. So, no matter how badly your life goes, as long as you worship the story, your SALVATION will come from the story. Hence we have people believing in all these stories and trying to rationalize them by all means possible even if it means lying to themselves. . .

Just see what is happening in the world today, we have people blowing themselves up because they live according to stories they were told were true. . .People denying themselves medication because some story tells them that some people prayed and they were healed. . .People hating others because some story told them not to associate with them or hate them. . .Why do Nigerians give too much credence to Jewish and Arabian mythologies and stories and discard their own stories and myths?. . . .
Mazaje. . . you missed out your favourite word. . ."fantsaies!"

"These deluded people with their myths and fantasies will not stop lying to themselves. . ."

The God hypothesis is a theoretical entity that is postulated by theists to explain various phenomena, such as the origin of the universe, the design of the universe, and the origin of living things. Modern science, however can explain all of these phenomena without postulating the existence of a God.
The bolded in red is a major and absolute LIE.

You are FULLY aware that "modern science" HAS NOT explained the origin of the universe.

Is it not intriguing that the Atheist assaults the Theist with the question: "Where did God come from?"

Failing entirely to realize that this question applies just as poignantly to his atheistic dogma: to wit: "Where did matter come from?"

@DeepSight:

There was a conception without copulation.
This flies against the grain of natural law and comon observation. It has been said of many human beings, but of course is not that which is known by common observation throughout history.

It is quite certainly a myth.

And I commonly find that the religious mind will go to any length to defend obvious myths.

Take a look at this terrible contradiction.

In an attempt to deny the VERY CERTAIN AND OBVIOUS FACT THAT “Alma” means “young woman”, you wrote or culled the following -

Those who are opposed to the interpretation of Isaiah 7:14 as a prophetic passage referring to a virgin birth claim that ‘ almâ does not mean “virgin,” and that the word used exclusively for “ virgin” is the Hebrew word betûlâ. Both of these claims, however, are inaccurate.
And then instantly contradicted it with –

According to John Walton, one of the translations of ‘almâ is “young woman,” but there are certain nuances to the Hebrew term. After examining all occurrences of the word, and looking briefly at its etymology, Walton gave the lexicographical definition of ‘almâ as “one who has not yet borne a child and as an abstraction refers to the adolescent expectation of motherhood.”
In the above, you have accepted that “Alma” does indeed mean “young woman.”

Worse still, the alternate meaning that you propose still does not not refer to a virgin It referred to a woman not yet with child. This is vastly different from a woman who has never had sex.

But worst – that inference is altogether speculation. Because you know very well that it is an improbable attempt to extrapolate a meaning which is not contained within the Hebrew context AT ALL. This is because it is certain that “alma” means “young woman” – “and not virgin.”

In application to Isaiah 7:14, he admitted that virginity seemed to be implied (1997a, 3:415-418).
.

Thanks for acceding that virginity is not within Isaiah but introduced by speculation on what is “implied”. . .

The Septuagint renders ‘almâ in Isaiah 7:14 as parthenos, which means “a female of marriageable age with focus on virginity” (Danker, 2000, p. 777). Concerning the Septuagint translation of the Hebrew, Dohmen noted:

It is unlikely that the LXX [Septuagint] tried to import the concept of a virgin birth, a familiar idea in many religious traditions, into Isa. 7:14.
This is another contradiction. It is stated that it is unlikely that the Septuagint would have tried to import the concept of a Virgin Birth.

It is then noted that the concept of a virgin birth was familiar in many religious traditions!

Need I say more? Is it not obvious that the familiarity of the idea within a multitude of pagan traditions at the time would provide the readiest platform for the translators to reach that presumptuous interpretation of a word that clearly meant “young woman.”

The translators of the Greek Septuagint rendered ‘almâ as parthenos, which generally means “virgin,” instead of neanis, which generally means “young woman” (Danker, p. 667).
Thanks. Another concession as to what actually happened!

It is interesting that the translators of the Septuagint took the thought of the Hebrew passage and translated it into a Greek word for “virgin.” Since they worked about two hundred years before Christ was born, then the translators of the Septuagint could not have been trying to “fit” scripture to a Christian viewpoint,
As noted above, they were simply fitting it into a pagan viewpoint.

. . .but instead were merely giving the correct translation for the passage.
. . .A translation based on their own existing traditions, you mean.

The renderation “virgin” has the support of the best modern Hebraists, as Lowth, Gesenius, Ewald, Delitzsch, Kay. It is observed with reason that unless ’almah is translated “virgin,” there is no announcement made worth of the grand prelude: “The Lord himself shall give you a sign—Behold!” The Hebrew, however, has not “a virgin” but “the virgin” (and so the Septuagint, h parthenos), which points to some special virgin, preeminent above all others (1962, 10:128, emp. in orig., italicized Greek words transliterated from Greek characters in orig.).
If you read the context you will see that the prophecy was referring to an imminent event to occur within Isaiah’s time. Read the next chapter!

Besides Isaiah 7:14, ‘almâ is used in Genesis 24:43, Exodus 2:8, Psalm 68:25, Proverbs 30:19, Song of Solomon 1:3 and 6:8. In an examination of the passages using the word ‘almâ, H.C. Leupold concluded that it “cannot be denied that such a one is to be classified as a virgin” (1988, 1:156). James Coffman drew an identical conclusion in his Commentary on Isaiah, citing Homer Hailey’s conclusion that the word ‘almâ , as used in the Old Testament, must be referring to a virgin (1990, p. 75). J. Gresham Machen, in his classic book, The Virgin Birth of Christ, indicated that “there is no place among the seven occurrences of ‘almah in the Old Testament where the word is clearly used of a woman who was not a virgin” (1980, p. 288).

In Genesis 24:43, the word ‘almâ refers to Rebekah, who we know from Genesis 24:16 was a virgin (which, incidentally, is designated by the term betûlâ). So here both betûlâ and ‘almâ are used to refer to a virgin girl. In Exodus 2:8, ‘almâ refers to Miriam, the elder sister of Moses. There is nothing in scripture to indicate that his sister was married at that time. In fact, it appears that she was not married and still living at home; therefore, ‘almâ likely is referring to her virgin condition. The Psalm 68:25 reference uses ‘almâ to designate young girls who were playing timbrels in what appears to be a religious parade or ceremony. It is highly unlikely that these girls were not virgins, since it would be uncommon for either a married woman or an unchaste girl to be involved in such a procession. Proverbs 30:19 is a little harder to decipher, but it appears that it is referring to intercourse between a man and a woman. [“There are three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: the way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maiden.”] However, it is impossible to ascertain from the verse whether or not the woman was a virgin. From the context of Song of Solomon 1:3 (“Thine oils have a goodly fragrance; thy name is as oil poured forth; therefore do the virgins love thee”), ‘almâ can refer only to a virgin. Song of Solomon 6:8 (“There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number”) also is obviously referring to virgins, as opposed to the queens and concubines who have lost their virginity.
Nuclear, I think that what you need to understand is the simple fact that “young women” of those times were socially presumed to be virgins, because that was the standard of decency expected. Thus in many parts ALL young women were referred to as virgins! ! !

In Matthew 1:18-25, the apostle Matthew provided a divinely inspired commentary, citing Isaiah 7:14 as a prophecy fulfilled by the virgin birth of Jesus Christ. “Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, ‘Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us’ ” (Matthew 1:22-23, emp. added).
Matthew’s presumption, given the illegitimate circumstances of the Carpenter’s birth.

Therefore, the only conclusion that one can draw respecting the available evidence is that the Hebrew word ‘almâ, as used in Isaiah 7:14 and elsewhere in the Bible, is properly rendered “virgin.” The term does not always mean virgin in non-biblical writings, nor do analogous terms of other Semitic languages necessitate this translation. Nevertheless, in biblical usage, the only example that can be found is of a young woman whose virginity is intact.
In law, this is what would be called a perverse finding as it is not supported by the facts at all.

In no wise can you escape the twin facts that –

1. The word “alma” means “young woman” and

2. ALL young women were socially referred to as virgins.

Nevertheless we should let this issue rest, as I sense there are no further arguments to make beyond what has already been said.

What’s your take on the next question – Redemption through the Sacrifice on the Cross. That is my prime interest.
