65 US Nobel laureates endorse Obama

By Agency Reporter

Sixty-five United States Nobel Laureates have urged Americans to support Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, in his quest to become the next US president.

The North America Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reported that the laureates made their request in an open letter they sent to the American people on Tuesday.

In a copy made available to NAN in New York, the scientists wrote, "This year's presidential election is among the most significant in our nation's history.

"The country urgently needs a visionary leader who can ensure the future of our traditional strengths in science and technology and who can harness those strengths to address many of our greatest problems - energy, disease, climate change, security, and economic competitiveness."

"We are convinced that Senator Barack Obama is such a leader, and we urge you to join us in supporting him,'' they said.

In reaction, Obama's campaign office said in a statement that the letter "marks the largest number of Nobel Laureates - `the nation's greatest minds'-- ever to endorse a political candidate.''

Americans will, on November 4, go to polls to elect a new leader to replace President George Bush.

Currently, Obama leads his Republican opponent, John McCain in most of the national surveys of preferred candidate conducted by some American media outfits and other polling organisations.

Airport police nabs undergraduate for kidnapping Lebanese passenger
Shola Adekola, Lagos
Thursday, October 16, 2008
There was a mild drama at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos State on Wednesday when the airport police command paraded a student of Ladoke Akintola University (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, who was having his Industrial Training (IT) with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), for attempting to kidnap a Lebanese on arrival at the airport.

The student, Samuel Olarewaju, was said to have posed as a protocol officer from Adamic Group of Companies with the intention of offering protocol services to the Lebanese, Mohammed Elmamud, who arrived aboard Qatar Airlines.

According to a statement issued by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos airport command, Hashimu Argungun, “the suspect was intercepted by security task force in the airport as he was leading the unsuspecting passenger away to a waiting vehicle manned by his cohorts who zoomed off on sighting him with the operatives.”

Olanrewaju, a 400-level Applied Physics student, was alleged to have posed as the protocol officer of the host company which the Lebanese was expected to meet at the airport.

“On arrival around 2.20 p.m., one Samuel Olanrewaju, of 21, Ikale Street, Ijeshatedo, Lagos and a student of LAUTECH, who was having his IT at NAMA in Ikeja, in his bid to kidnap the passenger, posed as a protocol officer from Adamic Group of Companies sent to pick the foreigner,” the statement said.

Family22 Die After Drinking Ogogoro In Lagos by DeepZone(op): 4:51pm On Oct 16, 2008
22 die after drinking ogogoro in Lagos - NAFDAC
Ayodele Adesanmi, Abuja
Thursday, October 16, 2008
The Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Dora Akunyili, has disclosed that over 22 people died last month in Lagos State after taking many bottles of locally brewed gin called ogogoro in local parlance.

The drink has other names such as Sapele water, Kainkain, Apetesi and Baba Erin. It is distilled from industrial alcohol and it is reported to be dangerous to health.

The people reported to be mostly affected were from the llaje community in Lagos State.

Speaking during consumer education and awareness campaign in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Akunyili appealed to the youth to stop consuming ogogoro, noting that for each reported case, many others must have died unreported.

She advised the people to reject any drug, medical device, food, cosmetics, drinks, that did not have NAFDAC number, saying that the agency had destroyed counterfeit and substandard products worth N24.25 billion in the last seven years.

She lamented that the agency enforcement officers had been attacked severally in the course of their duties which, according to her, “is too bad”

She explained that “on Monday, 12th May 2008, NAFDAC regulatory officers, along with some police officers on routine surveillance and raid on drug hawkers in a market in Damboa Local Government Area, were attacked and pounced upon by miscreants and lay-abouts youth who chanted “Allahu Akbar” thereby trying to give the raid action a religious undertone so as to attract sympathy for mob action against our officers

“Despite the number of armed police officers with the NAFDAC team, they were overpowered by the surging crowd and were chased away.”

Akunyili called on the people in the villages to cooperate with NAFDAC officials so as to enlighten them on the dangers of fake and counterfeit drugs and other substandard regulated products.

Fifty-six illegal aliens were eased out of the country through the Zone ‘A’ command of the Nigeria Immigration Service in the last two months.

A total of 412 inadmissible persons were also refused entry into the country, while 249 others were refused departure.

This was disclosed by the Assistant Comptrollers General (ACG) and Zonal Coordinator of Zone ‘A’, which comprises, Lagos and Ogun states, Mr. Samuel Eluwa, during a recent visit to the Zone by the Comptroller General of Immigration, Mr. Chukwurah Udeh.

He said between January and July 2008, the zone, through the entry posts, processed 672,484 arriving passengers and 582,763 departing passengers.

The ACG also told the Immigration boss that the zone realized a total sum of N2, 658,121,593 between January and July this year, while fines from defaulting Airlines was put at $624,000.

Eluwa explained that the revenue profile of the zone had been on the upsurge due to the on-line payments.

He said the zone had made appreciable achievements in service delivery, especially, in the areas of passport processing; issuance of residential and entry permits; control of entry and departure of persons; combating human trafficking, monitoring of illegal migration, among others.

According to Eluwa, the re-orientation of officers and men in the Immigration service had been on the increase since Udeh assume office, as a result of the strategies adopted in training and re-training of officers and men.

He said: " This laudable development has improved tremendously, the enforcement of Immigration laws and regulations and engendered international best practices on migration management and efficient service delivery. All the officers and men of this zone share your vision and mission for the growth of the service and would do everything to ensure that these objectives are fully realized."

The ACG further explained that the zone issued a total of 148,579 standard passports and renewed 18,435 to eligible Nigerians. A breakdown showed that Ikoyi passport office issued 93,296, while Festac and Ogun passport offices issued 41,873 and 13,410, respectively.

Similarly, 6,144 Resident Permits and 271 Aliens Movement Cards were issued to foreigners resident in the zone.

Responding, Udeh commended the zone for its efforts and promised to give the necessary assistance to enable it perform optimally.

He took time to explain the innovations he introduced into the Immigration since 2005. This include, the e-passport, and consequently, on-line payment, IT revolution, infrastructural development, improvement in the welfare of officers including prompt payment of salaries, among numerous others.

"should not imitate women.

The simple word imitate is used here, NOT "emulate". Mimicking such as voice, hairdo, dressing, etc, as opposed to emulating piety in a woman

Oh Allah, I seek refuge against knowledge which is of no benefit to me. Amin
Was it not Olabowale that always attack the bible about interpretation based on language? How come y'all are confusing 'imitate' with 'emulate'? Which one is it since you use the original translation?

LOL!!!! I just logged in here and read all this talk about my comment post, which was just my own person response to the question ( Re: What Have You Done To Hurt Your Ex? ) Did i do or say something terrible?!! ah ah! KILODE??!!its funny that d topic did a 360 flip to my story, and turned into my justifications for WHAT I DID. I'm not trippin, its how nairaland works unfortunately. But regardless~ i wanted to respond to a couple of d comments, and i wont recall who posted them.

#1. I never said d 2 chiks that he was sleeping with were my friends. i said in my GROUP of friends. this typically means that they know someone that i hang out with, so they are amongst d circle, but we are not close. (hence the reason for them being shady) I considered them scandalous women anyway- because they have a reputation so i wasnt surprised.

#2. i can never be envious of this man, nor this girl-his fiance. Everything he owns now is because of my guidance! and he knows this for sure. In fact, d car she drives- he bought for ME- with d cash from d job that I got for him when he was a JJC from naija. This is why he can never face me or confront me for telling his chik these details. I can drop a man quickly if he doesnt have respect for me, no shakin. So y hesitate to call him out? I was a happy girl when i left him oo- it was me who ended it due to his lack of appreciation and his cheating. AND i wasnt single when i did that- i had my own thing. tongue

#3. If you saw what i mean by her "attitude" and u know how some Nigerian chiks in usa can be, even when they are still small girls with no income-cocky as hell. u will understand y i wasnt shy to open my mouth. The straw that broke the camels back was when he got bold n said something so low to my girl. His fiance got in the argument (even though she didnt know anyone as a visitor) and she tested me by getting smart when i told them to calm down. thats how it started~~~~

#4 (ahem, KARMAMOD) this is the thread i meant to post on. 'stupid things u have done for love' is for you my dear. better yet for all d insane men that DARED to put up with your smart mouth.

#5 whats up with all this analyzing/dissecting of peoples comments or stories here, just to say something rude- instead of posting your own experiences or responses? I guess d arguing or fighting is more fun eh? grin lol. Its like black naija vultures that pic on a juicy comment when someone is being real or honest about something they did in d past. GOOD OR BAD! HE DESERVED IT SHA, no lie. Thats even just a small small thing karma brought his way. undecided
Eeyaah. Your picture is cute tho, that guy must be very stupid to leave you. Are you Itsekiri?
