Thursday, October 16, 2008 65 US Nobel laureates endorse Obama By Agency Reporter Sixty-five United States Nobel Laureates have urged Americans to support Democratic presidential candidate, Barack Obama, in his quest to become the next US president. The North America Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria reported that the laureates made their request in an open letter they sent to the American people on Tuesday. In a copy made available to NAN in New York, the scientists wrote, "This year's presidential election is among the most significant in our nation's history. "The country urgently needs a visionary leader who can ensure the future of our traditional strengths in science and technology and who can harness those strengths to address many of our greatest problems - energy, disease, climate change, security, and economic competitiveness." "We are convinced that Senator Barack Obama is such a leader, and we urge you to join us in supporting him,'' they said. In reaction, Obama's campaign office said in a statement that the letter "marks the largest number of Nobel Laureates - `the nation's greatest minds'-- ever to endorse a political candidate.'' Americans will, on November 4, go to polls to elect a new leader to replace President George Bush. Currently, Obama leads his Republican opponent, John McCain in most of the national surveys of preferred candidate conducted by some American media outfits and other polling organisations. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/16/406.html |

22 die after drinking ogogoro in Lagos - NAFDAC Ayodele Adesanmi, Abuja Thursday, October 16, 2008 The Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Professor Dora Akunyili, has disclosed that over 22 people died last month in Lagos State after taking many bottles of locally brewed gin called ogogoro in local parlance. The drink has other names such as Sapele water, Kainkain, Apetesi and Baba Erin. It is distilled from industrial alcohol and it is reported to be dangerous to health. The people reported to be mostly affected were from the llaje community in Lagos State. Speaking during consumer education and awareness campaign in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, Akunyili appealed to the youth to stop consuming ogogoro, noting that for each reported case, many others must have died unreported. She advised the people to reject any drug, medical device, food, cosmetics, drinks, that did not have NAFDAC number, saying that the agency had destroyed counterfeit and substandard products worth N24.25 billion in the last seven years. She lamented that the agency enforcement officers had been attacked severally in the course of their duties which, according to her, “is too bad” She explained that “on Monday, 12th May 2008, NAFDAC regulatory officers, along with some police officers on routine surveillance and raid on drug hawkers in a market in Damboa Local Government Area, were attacked and pounced upon by miscreants and lay-abouts youth who chanted “Allahu Akbar” thereby trying to give the raid action a religious undertone so as to attract sympathy for mob action against our officers “Despite the number of armed police officers with the NAFDAC team, they were overpowered by the surging crowd and were chased away.” Akunyili called on the people in the villages to cooperate with NAFDAC officials so as to enlighten them on the dangers of fake and counterfeit drugs and other substandard regulated products. http://odili.net/news/source/2008/oct/16/604.html |
