Honestly, its becoming more and more obvious that God did not creat man but the other way round. Why? Men having have been driving themselves crazy trying to defend God. They've hurled insults, issued curses and even threatened non-believers with imminent calamities! If God is not ignorant as against omniscient, impotent as against omnipotent and absent as against omnipresent then He would have prevented the attack or better still make an open show of the bombers by allowing them to be caught while planting the bomb. Some said its for a greater good why then do you blame the govt, especial GEJ who can only be at one place at a time. I pray such greater good does not befall you or any close friend or relatives. Even if the dead are in heaven, what about their grieving family members? My point: if God cannot defend himself or His existence, how is He expected to defend someone else? Thats probably why He relies on people like we have on Nairaland to defend Him. On a final note, I thought Oyedepo curse boko haram some time ago, how come this sect is waxing stronger and have noticed that apart from Ayo Oritsejafor no other prominent christian 'MOGs' have said anything? Am sure they are afraid of being targets should they make any unguarded statement.

It only shows that when push comes to shove the pastors themselves do not believe in what they teach. Boko haram does not understand touch not my annointed and they are not afraid to die. If Adeboye and co realy believe in what they preach, they will condemn the attack and dare the bombers.

This actually confirms what the atheists have been saying all the while. While I am not an atheist (Yet) am scared to death that their claim might be true. Now God is supposed to be 1) Merciful 2) omnipotent 3) Omniscient 4) Omnipresent.
That means he must have been there when these people were making plans to detonate a bomb in a church and also has the power to stop them from carrying out the act but we all know what happened. It means these attributes do not honestly qualify God. If He has the power to ensure this did not happen and yet he allowed it to happen, then he is not merciful and He takes delight in seeing people suffer. Some will say why blame God for man's inhumanity to man, but then I ask the question is God not supposed to be our Father? Those poeple are getting stronger and a lot more violent and precise on their target. More road accidents occur during Christmas than any other period of the year, and unscrupulous police officers make things worse for thousands of people travelling to the South-East by mounting too many unnecessary, illegal, and irksome checkpoints on the highways, which sometimes cause accidents.

Mr. Hafiz Ringim, the Inspector General of Police, should order his men to dismantle 99 per cent of the checkpoints on the Lagos-Benin-Onitsha-Owerri expressway so that travellers can get to their various destinations on time.

Now, while wishing my readers happiness-filled Christmas celebrations, I want them, particularly the Christians, to meditate on the supposed spiritual core of Christmas. To provide the intellectual catalyst for the serious contemplation we are recommending, I will investigate the enigmatic question: did the character depicted in the New Testament of The Holy Bible as Jesus of Nazareth actually exist?

Perhaps to devout Christians, the question does not arise, for the reality of Jesus’ actual existence has been definitively established by the Synoptic Gospels. However, as a sceptic and unrepentant unbeliever acquainted with the debate among scholars of the New Testament and church history, I know that the issue is far from settled. Therefore, our interrogation of the historicity of the most important personage in Christianity is motivated by the desire to encourage Christians to subject the fundamental doctrines of their religion to periodic intellectual auditing, thereby helping them avoid the absurdities of blind faith, which are emotionally satisfying but systematically misleading, with dire consequences for the peace and prosperity of humankind.

Aside from its appropriateness for Yuletide, my choice of topic is based on the fact that Christianity is more tolerant of dissenting views than its cousin, Islam, which still regards open-minded critical inquiry into any of its fundamental creeds and articles of faith as blasphemy deserving fatwa — is it any surprise that no Islamic nation is among the leading countries in scientific and technological innovation, despite the impressive oil wealth of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Libya, Qatar, Jordan, etc.? Perhaps in future I will compare Christianity and Islam, paying particular attention to how adherents of the two faiths respond to criticism.

Suffice it to say, however, that the inability of fanatic Muslims to tolerate and accommodate well-reasoned critique of their religious beliefs gives their religion a bad reputation among billions of people all over the world. Therefore, Islam desperately needs its own equivalents of Martin Luther, David Hume, Thomas Paine, Voltaire and Bertrand Russell to drastically prune the obscurantist brambles of insular fundamentalism and attenuate the bloodthirsty intolerance associated with it. Unless that is done, the religion will continue to conjure up images of horror in those who cherish intellectual honesty and free thought.

That said, although there are many sects and denominations within Christianity, the New Testament — especially the unique status it ascribes to Jesus, His birth, crucifixion, and resurrection — constitutes the single factor that unites all of them. The accounts of Jesus given in the Four Gospels are regarded by Christians as inerrant and unimpugnable word of God. However, most of them are unaware that the Gospels are contrary to one another.

In logic, when propositions are contrary, they may both be false, but they cannot both be true at the same time. Therefore, there is no way the Gospels’ narratives about Jesus can all be true simultaneously. Divergent stories about the family background and birth of Jesus illustrate the discrepancies we are talking about, some of which have been succinctly discussed by Michael Biagent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln in the enthralling book, The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail; and by J.D. Shams in Where Did Jesus Die?

Matthew, for example, portrayed Jesus as an aristocrat who could stake a legitimate claim to the Davidic throne through Solomon. Luke presented a somewhat different picture altogether: Jesus, though descended from the house of David, was of somewhat less exalted stock; and it is from Mark’s account that the legend of the "poor carpenter" originated.

Matthew says that when Jesus was born, He was visited by some wise men from the East. Jesus’ family was a little bit well-to-do and lived in Bethlehem for quite some time, where Mary was delivered of her first son. Luke, on the other hand, reports that the infant Jesus was visited by shepherds. His family resided in Nazareth: all of them then travelled to Bethlehem (where He was born in a manger) for a census which historians suggest never really happened.

In addition to discordant information on the quotidian details of Jesus’ daily existence, the Gospels also disagree on the day and specifics of the Crucifixion. The Gospel according to John avers that the event occurred before the Passover; the other three Gospels confirm that it took place a day after. The personality of Jesus presented in the Gospels are at odds with one another: in Luke, He was a meek and lamb-like saviour; however in Matthew, He was a powerful and majestic sovereign "who comes not to bring peace but sword."

The Gospels even reported different expressions as Jesus’ final words on the cross after He was allegedly crucified. In Matthew and Mark, Jesus was reported to have exclaimed, "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" In Luke it was, "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." Finally, in John, His last words were simply, "It is finished." Only a dishonest Christian will deny these discrepancies in the Gospels and their negative implications for the credibility of the events Mark and others purport to describe; or try to gloss them over with the facile rationalisation that "After all, the Gospels agree that Jesus was born, was crucified and resurrected afterwards."

As Biagent et al appropriately remarked, "Given these discrepancies, the Gospels can only be accepted as a highly questionable authority, and certainly not as definitive. They do not represent the perfect word of any God; or if they do, God’s words have been very liberally censored, edited, revised, glossed and rewritten by human hands."

Bishop David Oyedepo is a bloody liar and he will burn in hell (provided such a place really exist). 1) If you believe worship and serve God and you sleep with your wife, will she get pregnant? Chances are that she will especially if this happens during her ovulation which increases the odds of fertilisation.

This same analogy can be applied to almost any other thing in life and that almost brings me to a conclusion that life is cpntrolled by probabilities what you do per time shifts the probability of outcomes in different direction.

Interesting how people believe, even willing to die for, stories from a veeeeeery distant past that sounded more like fairy tales and yet find it difficult to believe things that are happening in their own life time. People can believe Elijah was taken up by chariots of fire but they cannot believe that a space craft has discovered another planet. The sad part for me is that those who should be the champion of everything that is good are busy amassing serious wealth but rather than put this to good use for humanity, they are busy building houses, and churches that can accommodate tens of thousands of people. What value does this add to our GDP. Japan was hit by a deadly Tsunami a few months ago, devastating the county's economy but rather than sit down hoping some God from somewhere who will come and bail them out, they stood up to the challenge. Nigeria entered the guiness book of world record, not because we performed any feat of engineering but because we built the biggest church. Factories in the whole of Lagos are being taken over by churches. Countries around the world are building economies we are building churches. If government officials are depraved, thieving kleptomaniacs, good for them! They are living up to expectation because in every country of the world, corruption lurks in every corner of the government establishments. religious people on the other hand are supposed to be examples of everything that is good, but what do we see, people who are only bothered about their pockets and how to milk the congregation dry.
Listen people, if you will wait for the government to make things better, you will wait several life times over. Things will be better when we change our orientation, especially as it relates to religion. We should ask questions from this 'Men of God'. The new finds bring the Kepler space telescope's total haul to 2,326 potential planets in its first 16 months of operation.These discoveries, if confirmed, would quadruple the current tally of worlds known to exist beyond our solar system, which recently topped 700.
The potentially habitable alien world, a first for Kepler, orbits a star very much like our own sun. The discovery brings scientists one step closer to finding a planet like our own — one which could conceivably harbor life, scientists said.
"We're getting closer and closer to discovering the so-called 'Goldilocks planet,'" Pete Worden, director of NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif., said during a press conference today. [Gallery: The Strangest Alien Planets]
The newfound planet in the habitable zone is called Kepler-22b. It is located about 600 light-years away, orbiting a sun-like star.
Kepler-22b's radius is 2.4 times that of Earth, and the two planets have roughly similar temperatures. If the greenhouse effect operates there similarly to how it does on Earth, the average surface temperature on Kepler-22b would be 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius).
Hunting down alien planets
The $600 million Kepler observatory launched in March 2009 to hunt for Earth-size alien planets in the habitable zone of their parent stars, where liquid water, and perhaps even life, might be able to exist.
Kepler detects alien planets using what's called the "transit method." It searches for tiny, telltale dips in a star's brightness caused when a planet transits — or crosses in front of — the star from Earth's perspective, blocking a fraction of the star's light.
The finds graduate from "candidates" to full-fledged planets after follow-up observations confirm that they're not false alarms. This process, which is usually done with large, ground-based telescopes, can take about a year.
The Kepler team released data from its first 13 months of operation back in February, announcing that the instrument had detected 1,235 planet candidates, including 54 in the habitable zone and 68 that are roughly Earth-size.
Of the total 2,326 candidate planets that Kepler has found to date, 207 are approximately Earth-size. More of them, 680, are a bit larger than our planet, falling into the "super-Earth" category. The total number of candidate planets in the habitable zones of their stars is now 48.
To date, just over two dozen of these potential exoplanets have been confirmed, but Kepler scientists have estimated that at least 80 percent of the instrument's discoveries should end up being the real deal.
More discoveries to come
The newfound 1,094 planet candidates are the fruit of Kepler's labors during its first 16 months of science work, from May 2009 to September 2010. And they won't be the last of the prolific instrument's discoveries.
"This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin," Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA headquarters in Washington, D.C., said in a statement.
Mission scientists still need to analyze data from the last two years and on into the future. Kepler will be making observations for a while yet to come; its nominal mission is set to end in November 2012, but the Kepler team is preparing a proposal to extend the instrument's operations for another year or more.
Kepler's finds should only get more exciting as time goes on, researchers say.
"We're pushing down to smaller planets and longer orbital periods," said Natalie Batalha, Kepler deputy science team lead at Ames.
To flag a potential planet, the instrument generally needs to witness three transits. Planets that make three transits in just a few months must be pretty close to their parent stars; as a result, many of the alien worlds Kepler spotted early on have been blisteringly hot places that aren't great candidates for harboring life as we know it.
Given more time, however, a wealth of more distantly orbiting — and perhaps more Earth-like — exoplanets should open up to Kepler. If intelligent aliens were studying our solar system with their own version of Kepler, after all, it would take them three years to detect our home planet.
"We are getting very close," Batalha said. "We are homing in on the truly Earth-size, habitable planets."

Gosh! These people's thought pattern beats me! There brains go on hybernation whenever their belief or pastors come up for discussion. Pity.

Sometimes I wonder how religionists, especialy christians speak from both sides of their mouth. When you ask them to let their God prove Himself by a little demonstration of His enormous power, maybe perform some kind of obvious, verifiable miracle they tell you God is not given into such show off. Yet their little black book says He took the same challenge for Elijah at Mt. Carmel against 400 prophets of baal. How come He doesnt take such challenges again, has He retired or relocated to another galaxy?

@islamrules, i guess you misconstrued my comments which is very typical of religionists and especialy islamists. In my comment you will see (zuckerman, 2005). I guess you are not familiar with APA style referencing otherwise you wont be asking for my source of information. Zuckerman conducted a feild research on the life of an average Dane and those were his findings. An average danish citizen is born a lutheran and not catholic. He is registered into the lutheran church and dats about all there is to church for him. The bible to him is just a big story book and nothing more, God, angels, miracles are more like the story odyseus, zeus, perseus and all the other 'euses'. But the life of an average dane is to say the least enviable, living standard is good, crime rate is low, healthcare is attractive and corruption index is one of the lowest in the world. Discussions abt God is a non-issue. Dubhai and Qatar are oil rich nations but then how well do the fair on corruption perception index? Obvious not as good as Denmark. You also made mention of China and Germany but am yet to run a check on the religios inclination of an average citizen but when i do i will make a comment cos i do not make comment that are devoid of empirical facts. An individual or country can believe in God and be successful, but nobody needs God to be successful. Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are some of the most successful men in our generation, but do this men believe in God? My answer is no. Religion puts a full stop called God at the end of anything it cannot explain whereas science and logical thinking put a comma called areas for futher research at the same spot.

@sexkillz, atheists did not become who they from birth especially those arround highly religious societies. They became athiests because they dared to think and question religious dogmas. Most of them were raised in religious home but then when the religious dogmas were put through logical tests, they collapsed like a pack of cards. Come to think of it, why would a God be bothered about his creation trying to perform a simple act of building a tower to the extent that He/They have to come down and confuse their language. And if He/They are the same yesterday, today and forevermore how come Bujh Khalifa in Dubhai was allowed to be completed? Nigeria is a highly religious society but is one of the most corrupt Nations in the world, 134 out of 187 countries assessed by transparency international. Denmark on the other hand is not religious. Evil brain, I love reading your contributions on this forum cos they are simple, logical and devoid of personal beef for anyone. I was a christian for many years and have asked questions about God since i was a child and the answers i have been, to say the least, unsatisfying. I am presently on the path to becoming an atheist and I must tell you its not so easy. This is because i have to unlearn all the crap and lies i have been taught from childhood, have to deal with friends and family who are deeply religious and to cap it up my house is a freaking house fellowship centre. I told my wife who is a very good christian about my decision, initialy she was bothered but when I explained my thoughts and findings to her, she agreeably left me to my convictions. @poser, atheists are not deceiving the world. The literal meaning of an atheist is someone who does not believe in God, and this affects all other mythical craps like satan,devils and demons that accompany the belief in God. Any practice that involves rituals or recognition of any of these mythical entities is not atheistic. Hope this makes some sense to you
