I completely subscribe to beating children in this part of the world cos this kids can actually get under your skin. I beat my kids and they neither hate nor fear me but and they understand the limits of my playfulness with them. I also talk to them when the need arises. The thing is parents should just understand how to balance the correction methods however it is important that when a child is threatened to be reported to his parents he or she should cringe a.little otherwise we are only breeding little tyrants

Truth be told, no one here has given any credible answer to the OP. Someone said the statements in Genesis are very technical however, will it not be better to eschew the technicalities and literally interpret the verses above. Verse 17Says you will die the very same day you eat the fruit but the couple did not die that same day or am I missing something here? And from the statements of both parties we can clearly see who was economical with the truth of what will happen after chopping the fruit.

Funny how we have sold out ourselves into slavery such that we willingly abandoned our own Languages and names. Today you hear people call their children Jewish, British and American names so that they may just feel and cool. When I was christening my last child I gave him one of our Local Yoruba names, Alabi and guess what? The pastor who came to conduct the ceremony frowned at it because, even though he himself is a Yoruba man he doesn't know the meaning of Alabi. However, when I told him Another name, Daniel, he accepted without question. Thankfully I am a core Yoruba man and I will not trade my heritage, thus all my children are addressed by their Yoruba names and they speak and understand the language even though they are still very young. I once went for a birthday party and I was talking with my five year old son in Yoruba, and a lady asked "does he understand what you are telling him?" I said yes, why not? My son speaks good English with good diction and he also speaks Yoruba. Infact if anyone acts surprised he tells them he is a Yoruba boy.

Most antiquities scholars think that the New Testament gospels are “mythologized history.” In other words, they think that around the start of the first century a controversial Jewish rabbi named Yeshua ben Yosef gathered a following and his life and teachings provided the seed that grew into Christianity.

At the same time, these scholars acknowledge that many Bible stories like the virgin birth, miracles, resurrection, and women at the tomb borrow and rework mythic themes that were common in the Ancient Near East, much the way that screenwriters base new movies on old familiar tropes or plot elements. In this view, a “historical Jesus” became mythologized.

For over 200 years, a wide ranging array of theologians and historians—most of them Christian—analyzed ancient texts, both those that made it into the Bible and those that didn’t, in attempts to excavate the man behind the myth. Several current or recent bestsellers take this approach, distilling the scholarship for a popular audience. Familiar titles include Zealot by Reza Aslan and How Jesus Became God by Bart Ehrman.

But other scholars believe that the gospel stories are actually “historicized mythology.” In this view, those ancient mythic templates are themselves the kernel. They got filled in with names, places and other real world details as early sects of Jesus worship attempted to understand and defend the devotional traditions they had received.

The notion that Jesus never existed is a minority position. Of course it is! says David Fitzgerald, author of Nailed: Ten Christian Myths That Show Jesus Never Existed at All . For centuries all serious scholars of Christianity were Christians themselves, and modern secular scholars lean heavily on the groundwork that they laid in collecting, preserving, and analyzing ancient texts. Even today most secular scholars come out of a religious background, and many operate by default under historical presumptions of their former faith.

Fitzgerald is an atheist speaker and writer, popular with secular students and community groups. The internet phenom, Zeitgeist the Movie introduced millions to some of the mythic roots of Christianity. But Zeitgeist and similar works contain known errors and oversimplifications that undermine their credibility. Fitzgerald seeks to correct that by giving young people interesting, accessible information that is grounded in accountable scholarship.

More academic arguments in support of the Jesus Myth theory can be found in the writings of Richard Carrier and Robert Price. Carrier, who has a Ph.D. in ancient history uses the tools of his trade to show, among other things, how Christianity might have gotten off the ground without a miracle. Price, by contrast, writes from the perspective of a theologian whose biblical scholarship ultimately formed the basis for his skepticism. It is interesting to note that some of the harshest debunkers of fringe Jesus myth theories like those from Zeitgeist or Joseph Atwill (who tries to argue that the Romans invented Jesus) are from serious Mythicists like Fitzgerald, Carrier and Price.

The arguments on both sides of this question—mythologized history or historicized mythology—fill volumes, and if anything the debate seems to be heating up rather than resolving. A growing number of scholars are openly questioning or actively arguing against Jesus’ historicity. Since many people, both Christian and not, find it surprising that this debate even exists—that credible scholars might think Jesus never existed—here are some of the key points that keep the doubts alive:

1. No first century secular evidence whatsoever exists to support the actuality of Yeshua ben Yosef. In the words of Bart Ehrman: “What sorts of things do pagan authors from the time of Jesus have to say about him? Nothing. As odd as it may seem, there is no mention of Jesus at all by any of his pagan contemporaries. There are no birth records, no trial transcripts, no death certificates; there are no expressions of interest, no heated slanders, no passing references – nothing. In fact, if we broaden our field of concern to the years after his death – even if we include the entire first century of the Common Era – there is not so much as a solitary reference to Jesus in any non-Christian, non-Jewish source of any kind. I should stress that we do have a large number of documents from the time – the writings of poets, philosophers, historians, scientists, and government officials, for example, not to mention the large collection of surviving inscriptions on stone and private letters and legal documents on papyrus. In none of this vast array of surviving writings is Jesus’ name ever so much as mentioned.” (pp. 56-57)

2. The earliest New Testament writers seem ignorant of the details of Jesus’ life, which become more crystalized in later texts. Paul seems unaware of any virgin birth, for example. No wise men, no star in the east, no miracles. Historians have long puzzled over the “Silence of Paul” on the most basic biographical facts and teachings of Jesus. Paul fails to cite Jesus’ authority precisely when it would make his case. What’s more, he never calls the twelve apostles Jesus’ disciples; in fact, he never says Jesus HAD disciples –or a ministry, or did miracles, or gave teachings. He virtually refuses to disclose any other biographical detail, and the few cryptic hints he offers aren’t just vague, but contradict the gospels. The leaders of the early Christian movement in Jerusalem like Peter and James are supposedly Jesus’ own followers and family; but Paul dismisses them as nobodies and repeatedly opposes them for not being true Christians!

Liberal theologian Marcus Borg suggests that people read the books of the New Testament in chronological order to see how early Christianity unfolded. “Placing the Gospels after Paul makes it clear that as written documents they are not the source of early Christianity but its product. The Gospel — the good news — of and about Jesus existed before the Gospels. They are the products of early Christian communities several decades after Jesus’ historical life and tell us how those communities saw his significance in their historical context.”

3. Even the New Testament stories don’t claim to be first-hand accounts. We now know that the four gospels were assigned the names of the apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, not written by them. To make matter sketchier, the name designations happened sometime in second century, around 100 years or more after Christianity supposedly began. For a variety of reasons, the practice of pseudonymous writing was common at the time and many contemporary documents are “signed” by famous figures. The same is true of the New Testament epistles except for a handful of letters from Paul (6 out of 13) which are broadly thought to be genuine. But even the gospel stories don’t actually say, “I was there.” Rather, they claim the existence of other witnesses, a phenomenon familiar to anyone who has heard the phrase, my aunt knew someone who . . . .

4. The gospels, our only accounts of a historical Jesus, contradict each other. If you think you know the Jesus story pretty well, I suggest that you pause at this point to test yourself with the 20 question quiz at ExChristian.net.

The gospel of Mark is thought to be the earliest existing “life of Jesus,” and linguistic analysis suggests that Luke and Matthew both simply reworked Mark and added their own corrections and new material. But they contradict each other and, to an even greater degree contradict the much later gospel of John, because they were written with different objectives for different audiences. The incompatible Easter stories offer one example of how much the stories disagree.

5. Modern scholars who claim to have uncovered the real historical Jesus depict wildly different persons. They include a cynic philosopher, charismatic Hasid, liberal Pharisee, conservative rabbi, Zealot revolutionary, nonviolent pacifist to borrow from a much longer list assembled by Price. In his words (pp. 15-16), “The historical Jesus (if there was one) might well have been a messianic king, or a progressive Pharisee, or a Galilean shaman, or a magus, or a Hellenistic sage. But he cannot very well have been all of them at the same time.” John Dominic Crossan of the Jesus Seminar grumbles that “the stunning diversity is an academic embarrassment.”

For David Fitzgerald, these issues and more lead to a conclusion that he finds inescapable:

Jesus appears to be an effect, not a cause, of Christianity. Paul and the rest of the first generation of Christians searched the Septuagint translation of Hebrew scriptures to create a Mystery Faith for the Jews, complete with pagan rituals like a Lord’s Supper, Gnostic terms in his letters, and a personal savior god to rival those in their neighbors’ longstanding Egyptian, Persian, Hellenistic and Roman traditions.

In a soon-to-be-released follow up to Nailed, entitled Jesus: Mything in Action, Fitzgerald argues that the many competing versions proposed by secular scholars are just as problematic as any “Jesus of Faith:” Even if one accepts that there was a real Jesus of Nazareth, the question has little practical meaning: Regardless of whether or not a first century rabbi called Yeshua ben Yosef lived, the “historical Jesus” figures so patiently excavated and re-assembled by secular scholars are themselves fictions.

We may never know for certain what put Christian history in motion. Only time (or perhaps time travel) will tell.

You are right. The response is always the same. I think it either they display the same set of recharge numbers throughout the day or that someone in their office has loaded the numbers long before it is displayed on screen.

These private school owners are just being unrealistic. How many children under 5 actually go to the market and interact at such close proximity such as obtains in schools. Even in religious gatherings, people monitor who their children interact per time. These people should not put financial gratification above public health. How many toddlers would readily use hand sanitizers? They will only see it as play things and they pose more dangers to themselves if this is randomly provided in schools without proper monitoring. Pls let them see it as sacrifices to be made in the wake of this Ebola scourge

1) when he believed he would be healed by Jesus, why did he accept Zmapp and other world class treatment given to him?
2) Does he mean that Jesus only heals white Americans but allows Spanish and other Africans to die?
3) Did Jesus have an axe to grind with Late Dr Ameyo Adedavoh and her family such that he allowed them to die from the same dreaded disease?

freshprincex49: It has now become customary for most General Overseers of our Pentecostal Churches to release a long list of predictions/prophesies at the beggining of each year of events that will occur during the year.

I have taken the liberty to go through a plethora of these so called prophecies for this year 2014, and never for once did any of them mention the outbreak of a dangerous disease like Ebola that has swept through Africa, Nigeria and spreading all over the world.

One would have thought that if our men of God can predict an issue as trivial as the death of a 'popular politician' then an issue as serious as this should not have skipped their attention

Infact, bros you spoke my mind. I wonder why the issue of Ebola went below their prophetic radar. While it is true that Ebola had been arround since since 1976, this strain is about the most virulent making WHO describe it as an international medical emergency.

The import of this post is not about death being a ticket or entry requirement for heaven however it is the only gateway out of life because you can't "go to heaven" if you don't die anyway. What the OP is trying to say is how come Christians run away from anything that has the.coloration of death especially in this part of the world, since when they die they are sure of heaven and their description of heaven is an extremely beautiful and idyllic place. For example we all see adverts about Canada being a nice place to live. If someone says you will get Canadian visa today nobody will reject it in Jesus name. Joagbaje: I can identify with this . I have experienced it with at least 2 cases . The individuals would not be aware a demon spirit use their phone to hurl treats to the minister . One of such case was to funny . The phone had no credit yet it was sending SMS to me. When I confronted the lady she said she didn't even have credit in her phone to start with for 2 days . I collected the phone and checked the credit . It was 0.00

It is quite interesting how either side is vehemently arguing that their holy book is the authentic declaration of the creator of the universe. However, one question I would love to ask is this. Who amongst all contributors here was there when the messages were being delivered such that they know without an iota of doubt that these were true words of God?
Lets even assume that the original texts were dictated by the creator (which to me is very unlikely), what is the guarantee that at least one scribe who was asked to rewrite a portion never made any typographical errors?
People just come and make assertions as if the writings were done in their presence.

As far as am concerned both books are religious books with no proof whatsoever but one the latter is a terribly twisted, falsified copy of the former.

Iganmode, a run down public school producing best mathematics students three years in a row! So what are the high paying private schools doing? Just collecting money from egocentric, status-hungry parents. Abeg, who is that math teacher who has really done so well to produce such brilliant students. Reminds me of my maths teacher way back in the early 90s, Mr. Akanbi of Methodist Grammar Schl, Bodija Ibadan, made maths a walk in the park for someone like me. I never thought mathematics could be so easy until he started handling maths for us and before we knew it, the whole class saw maths as the easiest subject and we all went on to score As at SSCE. Even further engineering maths in UNILAG could not stop me from scoring A's as an engineering student

I watch Ben 10 with my four year old son everyday and am yet to see anything wrong with it. Can you compare the contents, language and scenes of Ben 10 with cartoons like Mandy and Grim, Courage the cowardly dog or even Simpsons?. My son, on his own accord, doesn't even watch those. But Ben 10.... he loves it with passion. Why do we keep attaching undue sentiments to harmless things. Ben 10 quarrels with Gwen all the time and ALL KIDS do that, put two kids together for one day and you will settle quarrels all day, thus qaurrels between these two cousins is just normal for any kid(s) even at that, the two will go to any length to protect each other from harm. Infact I have never heard real insults in Ben 10, only words like 'DWEEB or DUFOS' - whatever those mean.

How many people here watched Voltron, Danger Mouse, Inpector Gadget, Super Ted etc...How badly did you turn out? I watched all those and am I sure turned out good. Today I have a four year old who adores Ben 10, in fact we just bought him omni trix and he is elated. He speaks good english, communicates with well and his expression are beautiful, in school he is well behaved and very good with his school work. What else does a parent want? I have watched the Ben 10 series and I do not see anything wrong with it. Despite Ben 10 and his cousin, Gwen, always having things to argue about, Ben 10 never hits her and despite her nagging and rantings he is calm and is NEVER violent towards her. Does that not teach you or your boy kids something?

An altercation has ensued between members of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, and Umuoji community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State over the killing of a snake in the community by the Overseer of the Mercy Throne Assembly, Umuoji, Rev Jude Chubueze.

The community believes Chibueze had desecrated the land by killing the snake, as snake killing in the area is a taboo, and they had gone ahead to seal his church with palm fronds.

The matter has been taken to the Anambra State Police command which is trying to mediate between the two parties to avoid a breakdown of law and order, and assure a peaceful resolution to it.

Reacting on the issue, members of PFN under the aegis of Umuoji Gospel Ministries Fellowship led by Pastor Celestine Ekpunobi, yesterday, described the tradition that forbids the killing of snake as barbaric, adding that such law should only concern the pagans.

Rev Chibueze said a snake stormed his house at night when members of his family were already sleeping. He said he heard his children screaming and rushed there to find a snake where his children had been sleeping.

“When I got to their room, I saw a big snake lying with them and I had to kill it and threw it into the nearby bush. The following day, some community members marched to my house and accused me of killing their god. They beat me up mercilessly.

“They wrote a list of items amounting to N54,890 which they said I should buy to appease their god. Being a Christian, I told them that it is against my faith and more over, I killed a snake and not a human being.”

One of the community leaders, Chief Paul Edekobi said, instead of the pastor doing what he earlier agreed to do with the community by providing the items, he dragged them to Ogidi Police Station where six of the community leaders were arrested.

The Chief threatened that what he did was capable of wiping out his entire family if sacrifices were not made to appease the gods.

“We do not want to destroy his property and that is why we used the palm fronts to tie round the church to stop him from worshipping there for now,” Edekobi said.

But the pastor said: “What they are talking about is not tradition; they see the killing of a snake as a taboo in their world of idol worshipping and not same in Christian faith

“If they do not desist from this act, our next port of call will be the court for the enforcement of our fundamental human rights.”

@op, it zis true that some men may be jealous butnot neccessarily because the kids are getting all the attention because he is not getting any. I have two beautiful kids, a boy (4) and a girl (2). There was a day my wife was dressed for an outing and my son came in and said "my pretty mama, you look beautiful" and gave her a kiss. I for one did not see anything to this more than aboy admiring his mother. But on a moreserious note, women should learn to balance the attention, otherwise there will be trouble. If you sacrifice your role as wife on the alter of being a mother you are driving your husband into the hands of other ladies waiting outside to give him all that you deny him of. Speaking for myself, ido not like going out, I prefer to at home with my wife and kids and catch all the fun together, however ifi am treated in my own home like a stranger, a second class citizen where my wife would pay all attention only to the kids andleave me in limbo, I will seek friendship and attention outside. And am sure you know the younger ladies definetely be willing to play ball. So my dear, for you own good and like you said "idi ere la ti n mo otito", ensure you dont push your hubbyinto the hands of another woman. I know a close family friend who dedicated all her attention on her kids at the expense of her husband. Now the kids no longer need so much attention but the husband has found an alternative. While he still spends on kids as if spending money is running out fashion he hardly talks with his wife at home. Make sure you dont do this to yourself because when the kids grow they will leave and then it will just you and the hubby you neglected for years and then he may have found solace with the boys, the boos and the babes
