brabus:
Sir Demainman1, you mentioned my name.

Some business models and tactics can never work here in Nigeria. I can agree that marine board is good, efficient, economical in the long run, easy to install and more inportantly, it makes a construction work looks more professional. But!!! It comes at a price.

When I started hiring boards as part of our business model to build a quality house at the most affordable price, I never thought of the following problem:

1. Delay period
2. Storage and Transportation
3. Cost of maintenance.
4. Economic value to clients.

Delay Period
As good as marine rental business is, I've had to face the harsh realities. One project was held down for 4 months after we've installed boards, reinforcement and was just about to cast. The reason was due to lack of funding. We couldn't pull off the board and we just had to leave with the issue. Another one was 6 months period of waiting.
Unless there's a firm agreement (which I really don't know how it can possibly work in Naija), this is going to cause some irregretable losses to both parties (the contractor and the owner). For me now, I'll suggest a marine board to clients, tell them about its advantages and disadvantages. So if you can afford it, you can buy.

Storage and Transportation
This is one of the most overlooked aspect of construction that eat deeply into our budgets. To run a successful rental business, you'll need a truck or van and employ able hands to assist in the transfer to/fro the boards to various sites. Now, these also comes at a cost which is not so favorable to an intending home owner. I can still remember one site where the locals took our boards and converted it to a table tennis. They even painted it.

Cost of Maintenance
I cannot really dwell much on this part but the boards need to be well maintained at all times.

Economic Value to Client
Except you're constructing a multi floor house or handling multiple units of houses, marine boards are not so economical in the long run for single builds.

Now, if you ask me as someone who have run the model before. Does it really worth the effort? I'll say "NO" it doesn't worth it as the client always feel cheated even though the contractor is making heavy losses on the rental.
Marine boards are very expensive and it's not an option when everyone is looking for affordable build.
Thanks for this insight Brabus. Does this mean you no longer use marine boards for your work? I think it is an improvement to buying all these woods and wasting trees.

I think what we need are companies that specialize in scaffolding installationd instead of one person being jack of all trade like in your case.

Before any installation is done please ensure materials and funding for casting are already in place so that you don't tie your equipments down in one site for up to 6 months.

Brabus, if God answer my prayers for money I will surely employ your talent one day. Your presentations and interior decor skills are up there with the best of them.

God bless.

Prof Spyder, I am still full of admiration for your work and integrity. More God blessings sir. My question is,

Do we not have marine board in the east for decking etc? Brabus is making good use of those in Lagos. It is quite cost effective in the long run as it is reusable and the finishing is also great.

Kindly research it and become the pioneer in the east if possible

I vividly recall the story of a man who became popular for engaging in money rituals just to buy the 80's edition of the Honda Prelude; you wouldn't buy that car for 50k today.
A guy brutally murdered his brother, just because he wanted to acquire the rave of the moment - Pathfinder Jeep. That same vehicle is now better described as a coffin.... Vanity
I remember as a kid, my whole street gathered at a neighbour's house to watch a"drama" shown on a "double-door black & white television". Today there is plasma television and its almost found in every student's room..... Vanity
Some ladies left their true loves because some rich guy then persuaded them with a Benz 190, which turned out to be the only car they ever owned till date. They found out too late that true love is invaluable..... Vanity
What about Santana, Mercedes Benz V boot, 505 Evolution, Toyota Crown?... All overtaken by latest models of Camry, Honda, Bugatti, Bentley, X6, Acura and Infinity.... Vanity!
A guy declared drinks because he launched the Nokia-3310 phone in 2002. Today that phone would embarrass the owner and is a joke compared to the low cost and everyday phones..... Vanity
What about the MTN SIM card that many people went extra miles before they bought for over 30k, today you will not buy it anywhere because all networks are begging people to even take it for free.... Vanity
People are still making the most horrific sacrifices over 'vanity' and make enemies over worthless material things. What can I say? Look back at that one thing you want to kill or die for today, and see what becomes of it tomorrow. There is absolutely nothing you can't achieve. ... Take it easy!
All you need is a little time and PATIENCE and you would thank God without regrets. There is actually nothing in this world that is worth going to Hell for, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
TAKE IT EASY!

You are right that life is not black and white. About @ Demainman's questions, I told him in my last response to him,

Yes it is true that a times plan fails but it is better to make a plan and no plan at all. Of course you could make a plan and at the end this didn't work out as planned. Let us be honest with ourselves, take a head count around you and you will noticed that most families ain't even considering that. Most of us are still stuck in the mentality that children are investment, thereby we can afford to bring as many as we want into this world without recourse to their future and how our actions/inactions will impact them.

If you work in the health sector one especially in the rural area you will understand why am hammering on it. My brother it is time we call a spade a spade. Trying to do things just the way our fathers did when it is obvious that it isn't working is nothing but foolishness. That there exist a slight possibility that one may be unfortunate to loos all they have acquired and worked hard for does not mean we should not encourage others to plan for the future.

The Demainman sounds as if because a plan could fail, hence the needs to breed as many children as possible without recourse on how to raise, just so that parents would have someone to look after them at old age.
My last question to you. How do you know the parent that planned and the one that did not?

What makes you think the parent in question did not plan?

Do you know how much it cost to train someone from year 0 through to the university?

Do you know if it was death and hospital bills that finished the parents life saving?

Someone's mother is down and needs help and you now conclude that the parents did not plan.

Thank God you have a choice having travelled out of that Nigeria. If push comes to shove you can declare yourself a refugee in your old age in order to avail yourself of free medicals. A lot of parents don't have that option and look up to their children for assistance when they become old.

Don't blame them. Blame the government that will rather loot all our common wealth than to look after the most vulnerable in the society.

Go to where pensioners they line up for verification after serving Nigeria for donkey years. You will weep my dear.

hahaha. My brother wetin u sey make I call am. Imagine mama wey dey sell akara and papa wey be ordinary carpenter, the type wey dey fix mosquito net or mend leaking roof, come get 6 children ontop of that they come live for city wey rent dey high. How them wan take train their pikin without going through 'hell' dragging those pikin with them. Tomorrow them go hit hand for chest sey all the sacrifice wey me and your papa do to raise una. Them for get sey their other option na to just one pikin less stress, better line for the pikin and better future for the pikin. In fact in the process the mama fit get some savings come begin do another business join the akara and the papa get saving rent shop by better equipment or even take time off go learn how to do this expensive future. But no they wan born full house with the hope sey one of the pikin go go carry their cross for them. Na only God go judge some parents ooh.
So the ones that cannot even to train one pickin must not have any by your logic abi?
So that they can become lonely and sad old parents in a country that does not care for its elderly.

I know you are still young and foolish that is why you reason like this.

I asked you before and I am asking you again, suppose you make all this wonderful plans while you can and in your old age your financial empire crumbles, what will then happen to you if your children would not help you out?

Well, like I said previously, let it be done to you according to your heart desire.

My brother is only when we see past sentiments that our society Will be a better place but for some unknown reasons we Nigerians are afraid of confronting status quo.
The only society where children are not obliged to help their parents is the western world because the government provide the help whether the parents plan for their old age or not.

Africans help out, indians help out, Chinese help out.

I don't know what you are talking about plan, plan and plan.

Where I live, whether you plan or not, you will not go hungry in your old age neither would you lack medical attention because the government makes sure you don't.

There is no excuse for child slavery at any point. A child that is left alone with strangers in a far away land quickly learns that they are alone in this world. Their parents SOLD them. Because their parents get a stipend monthly for that child. No matter how you try to twist it, it will be a special child that can still look back and say they have a family after such experiences. It's in Nigeria you see a 3 yr old hawking. When they kidnap children like water. I will not insult that girl because I did not live her life. Her experiences may have even killed me. Till I hear her story, I don't really believe the OP's mother is clean.
Believe whatever you like sister. I don't support child slavery or abuse but unfortunately it happens a lot in Nigeria. Blame the useless govt that we have, not the parents because most parents want the best for their children. And please don't tell them to stop having children o because no one wants to be lonely and without a child in old age.

You are your parents security in old age. Honour your father and mother the bible says. Thanks

My former house girls are mostly teachers. Their education was paid for by my parents to any level. If there was one that wanted to be a pharmacist, do you think she would not have been one? A lot of these girls lives with us from 12 and above. So what are you saying?
What I am saying is, who was training them before they became your house girls at 12?

Your parents would have contributed to your living one way or the other. Even ones that don't have anything to give will still give prayers.

Do not for once think that since they couldn't contribute financially, it means they deserve nothing.

Maybe na their prayers touched your parents to become the parents their biological parents could only dream about.

Everything they say happens for a reason.

By Nigeria/Africa context, a child is his parents social security at old age. Of course, there are exceptions.
FamilyRe: My Sister Is Making Her Success A Curse To Our Family by Demainman1: 10:33pm On Nov 26, 2015
And how many house girls ended up becoming a pharmacist in Nigeria?. Don't assume, how many do you know?

And who was it that gave them to their masters? Likely, their parents. And who cared for them from 0 age to 5 or 6 years. Their parents. If your parents are poor, you are not alone, a lot of us are from poor parents too.

In life, no condition is permanent. Goodluck Jonathan did have shoes to wear, but he became the president of Nigeria.

Well a lot of girls in Nigeria trained themselves with runs and prostitution. So many traded clothes and things to send themselves to school. A lot worked too. So you cannot assume the parents could afford to train them
I guess those people you described above also did all those hustle described from year 0 through primary school and secondary school. Their mama no even carry their shit and bath and wash their clothes sef.

You are missing the whole point. I am not saying that kids should turn down their parents. What I am advocating for is that our parents or parents of this new generation should start being responsible and stop mortgaging their children future.

Knowing full well that no help awaits them at old from the government, they should start planning towards it by having a family size that is at par with their income without shifting their burden to their kids.
You keep hammering on parents planning for their old age. What about the ones that planned, saved, had plenty but lost everything in their old age?

What happens to them then?

If you like don't take care of your old parents or your siblings. Na u sabi.

You do know some girl children are raped by relatives or even their father and the mother covers it up and blames the girls right? You never know the other side of the story so do not judge her harshly. Instead we should be asking the mother if her hands are clean. If such happened to you and you became successful, will you readily jump to helphuh
Who trained her to become a pharmacist? The rapist?

If that was the case that she had terrible things done to her while growing, then she should bloody well say so. Why neglect even your struggling siblings. Na dem rape you? Mtcheeeew.

Funny enough we are saying same thing the only problem is you can't stand me calling out our parents for their error in judgement.

Brother, I can't tell you my story on NL but truth be told most of our parents brought it upon themselves and it pains me to watch young people make same mistake. I know a family of nine children, their mom is a petty trader and their dad does whatever jobs he can find. Their household income is not up to 40k a month I know that for sure and they all live in two rooms. How in God's name do you explain that? How in God's name do the parents think they are going to raise the kids or even provide a decent childhood or a better education for the children?

Can you please explain to me how an okada rider whose combine family income in a month is not more than 30 thousands naira intend to give a family of 5 children a good life without putting them through difficulties? Can you explain to me what is wrong,if the okada man and his wife having assessed their budget and realized that their combined monthly income is 30k and decided to have just one child, while they raise him and try to save. If in the future they were able to improve their finances they can give birth to another.

What stops our parents from being responsible, rather than relying on fate or the believe that once we manage with the help of God to train the first child then the first child will help out with others. Please I know what it is to go to bed without food and I know what it is as a child to support a family.
The young eaglet who scored the highest goals in the just concluded FIFA under 17th world cup fits perfectly into the families you have just described. Today he has just been signed by one of the big clubs in Europe.

Should he now turn his back on his parents because of all the struggles he went through growing up? Think boy, think!

This story is about a daughter who is well off but refused to aid her sick mum.

The only reason I can think of is "PASTOR" or a guy man boyfriend.
