Akolawole:
@Dauda

Yes thats true but he can't win not even Abeokuta.
Yes he can win if we ACTUALLY vote for him. The error we're comitting is to presuppose that he cannot win so we use that as the justification not to vote for him. Fawehinmi fell victim of the same thinking in 2003 even though he was popular. I don't want to believe Nigerians prefer looting 'owambe' politicians to upright citizens.

PoliticsRe: Nine Oil Workers Kidnapped In Niger Delta by demmy(m): 8:39pm On Mar 02, 2006
MEND is not a serious group. They are extortionist 419ers with guns. They are probably sponsored by Alams and co. They'll soon realized that militancy is not a child's play.
PoliticsRe: Nine Oil Workers Kidnapped In Niger Delta by demmy(m): 4:33am On Mar 02, 2006
Only six of the nine hostages were released. They are "low valued" according to the militants so they have to let them go. smiley

PoliticsRe: Black History Month by demmy(m): 9:18pm On Mar 01, 2006
Nnenna1:
Totally agree with you. Black History month is a double standard. We don't need a history month to tell us of our achievement or suffering.
Black history month is mainly for African Americans in America to celebrate and acknowledge the mostly underrated black archivements and overcoming in racist America. There is nothing double standard there. When you said "we" you're obviously refering to us Africans and most of us have remote idea about what racism really entails.

It shows how frail and frigile these so called leaders of ours are. Once in trouble they crumble like a pack of card. He spent total of what 6/7 months in prison and he is sick already. Alams is in the same condition presently.
PoliticsRe: Open Invitation To Seun: Field Tour/vacation In The Niger Delta For Mr Admin. by demmy(m): 10:29am On Feb 27, 2006
owo you know quite well I wasn't calling on Ogomudia and Daukoru etc to be regionalists, but that they are Niger Deltans in the highest echelon of the policy making body in the country and are still unable, positively to influence events affecting the region they originated from? If Daukoru cannot use diplomatic means and bring the weight of his OPEC presidency to bare on SHELL to at least stop the environmental degradation in his region then what is the point? We might as well return Rilman Lukman to that position. Your narrow mindedness is reminiscent of the general nigerian malaise of blaming other tribes for their woes as if those other tribes are faring any better. Left to me they can keep all the oil money for all I care but with leaders as we have in Nigeria in general and they have in Niger Delta in particular you'll still come to the same result. Think about it.
PoliticsRe: Is Nigeria On The Verge Of Civil War? by demmy(m): 3:06am On Feb 27, 2006
ijebuman:
Lets calm down a bit. Nothing is going to happen. This time next month no one will remember this incident and then something else will happen and then we will go through the whole cycle again.

Why i'm not worried? quite simple. Majority of Nigerians do not have the foresight or patience required to effect social change. We think social change can come through occasional violence, crying out to God etc. People want instant results and when they don't get it they give up.

Change requires sustained action, not our typical fire brigade approach or knee jerk reaction to everything. Who will fight if they realise that it may take them 30 to 40 years to achieve their goal.

Then you also have the religious factor. As long as people wrap themselves in the cloak of religion, nothing will happen because religion absorbs most of the social frustrations people have.

Nigerians only react to incidents when it affects them personally. We don't really have this culture of standing up for each other (its every man for himself). You want to understand the true psyche of a Nigerian, then study the behaviour of Nigerians abroad.
A lot of Nigerians are victimised all over the world, but its surprising that even where avenues exist for many to seek redress (and probably even get compensated in the process smiley) they refuse to do so, placing their trust in religion.

As usual this crises will play itself out till the next one and the next one after that
correct analysis my brother. very very correct.

@owo trying to make the rest of us feel bad about the condition in the Niger Delta won't work. At least not to those conversant with the region's politics. The question is: what has Niger delta's elites/leaders done for their own region? And the answer is Nothing. Absolutely nothing. And there has been quite many educated elites from that Niger delta but nothing to show for them. Now for example Gen. Alexandra Ogomudia, the present Chief of Defense Staff is the one responsible for bombing Niger delta villages presently; guess what he hails from that very Niger Delta. Nigeria's unofficial minister of petroleum is Dr. Edmund Maduabebe Daukoru who is also the present OPEC president also hail from Niger Delta. Guess what his views are on conditions in that region, nothing. No opinion. He is too busy attending to bigger oil business deal in Vienna. So you see what I'm saying? You can't ignore the complicity, intrigues, neglect and disinterest of the Niger delta leadership in the chaotic and wretched condition plaguing their region. Saro Wiwa was sadly a victim of such intrigues. The present 13% derivation formula while little is still enough to provide a minimum form of living for the people but you have to wonder where the money are going.
CrimeRe: Christians Killing Muslims In Onitsha by demmy(m): 9:32am On Feb 24, 2006
Anybody who thinks that this is a religious or tribal issue is decieved. this is politics by other means. no amount of sitting together by religious leaders will solve this. Religious leaders has sat together before and nothing came of it. Only a positive, clear and assertive government intervention can curb it. As Seun has said arrest ALL the perpetrators wherever they come from and prosecute them. simple. If the federal government is unserious about the secular character of Nigeria its folly to expect religious synchophants to not play politics with it.
CrimeRe: Christians Killing Muslims In Onitsha by demmy(m): 4:09am On Feb 24, 2006
To be clear Iam not in surport of this retaliatory action but we have to admit those northern fanatics went too far this time around even if incited and put up to it by others. How easily they rose up and murdered innocent people for crime of others! And with our incompetent government to boot it is all expected. The whole crisis could have been avoided if we were not saddled with the likes of Obasanjo as leaders. Thats our lot. Predatory and parasitic leaders putting our lives in danger at every corner.
