Second, the report appeared only in the Tribune, whose reporting ability I have come to doubt lately.

And, third, the House of Assembly has no legislative power to postpone elections.

Nigeria's Muslim Kano State Most Populous: 2006 Census

ABUJA (AFP) - Nigeria's most populous state is Kano, in the Muslim-dominated north, according to state-by-state figures from the country's March 2006 census.

Kano has a population of some 9.38 million people, the National Population Commission (NPC) reported Tuesday, putting it ahead of the 9.01 million people living Lagos State, home to the sprawling commercial capital of the same name.

The United Nations put the population of Lagos city at 10.9 million in 1996, projecting it would rise to become the world's third most populous city with 24.6 million inhabitants by 2015.

According to the census, the third and fourth most populous states in Nigeria are Kaduna and Katsina, both in the north and predominantly Muslim, with 6.07 million and 5.79 million people respectively.

The Federal Capital Territory, Abuja has the smallest population of any state with just 1.4 million inhabitants, but has by far the highest rate of population growth, 9.3 percent. The next highest growth rate for a state is 3.5 percent.

NPC chairman Sama'ila Makama in late December announced that Nigeria's total population was growing at an annual rate of 3.2 percent and stood at just over 140 million, a 63 percent increase in 15 years.

The state-by-state figures released Tuesday indicate that the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital together account for 53.59 per cent of Nigeria's population, with the remaining 46.41 per cent in the 17 states of the south.

Census results -- especially the distribution between the Muslim north and the Christian south -- have often sparked controversy in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country.

Demographers and government officials said the latest figures are unlikely to be an exception.

Nigeria is the ninth most populous nation in the world behind Russia (143 million) and Bangladesh (147 million), and ahead of Japan (127 million) and Mexico (107 million).

Anyway Onitsha's claim to being the largest market in West Africa is based on what fact? The volume of goods traded? The number of people trading there or the expanse of land occupied?

PoliticsRe: Census Results Out - More Males Than Females by demmy(m): 6:37am On Jan 07, 2007
Well, whatever the case is, every census so far has placed Onitsha above Akure in terms of population and that is coherent with what I've noticed.
Indeed it has. However it also placed Ilorin above Onitsha and this would not be coherent with your theory.

I just take it you haven't visited Onitsha, go and see things for yourself. I've visited both places and I'm talking from EXPERIENCE as opposed to those things naijaone calls Satellite pics. Look at those pics., what do they tell you?. . . Nothing.
Experience and satellite photos are both inadequate in determining real population of an area. Anyway Onitsha may well be more populated than most towns however this will not be due merely to a presence of market.

PoliticsRe: Census Results Out - More Males Than Females by demmy(m): 12:29am On Jan 07, 2007
It is not my theory bro., it is fact that market towns outnumber administrative towns.
Not if they are merely market towns and I hope you are not confusing these with "commercial towns". Anyway in market towns people come and go, so if Onitsha is a market town as you're claiming its real population would not be affected by the market. Visiting marketers and buyers would not be there on the day of enumeration. Cotonou, a market town and probably the largest in West Africa (or is it Kumasi?) has official population of just above 700,000 people. Its real population is unaffected by the large number of people trooping there for her market. Mark you too that Cotonou has industries, academic institutions, government and diplomatic agencies, facilities lacking in Onitsha's case.
PoliticsRe: Census Results Out - More Males Than Females by demmy(m): 11:11pm On Jan 06, 2007
Well there are markets in Akure and Ilorin but they're not exacly places starting enterpreneurs will be looking to move to. Do you get it now?
Yes I get it now. There are no starting entrepreneurs in Akure and Ilorin whereas they are plenty in Onitsha.

I still insist : YOUR LITTLE THEORY NEED MORE WORK.
PoliticsRe: Census Results Out - More Males Than Females by demmy(m): 10:38pm On Jan 06, 2007
Onitsha is probably more populated than Ilorin. Ibadan/Enugu/Port Harcourt both serve as administrative/market towns so I doubt the same theory applies. Ehhh, make some sense bro.
Thanks for the advise bro. I ll try. Now to get your theory straight "Ibadan/Enugu/Port Harcourt both serve as administrative/market towns" and so this is why they are more populated than Onitsha whereas Akure and Ilorin do not, i.e they are merely administrative towns without market and trading. Can this assertion be true?

Maybe you need to rework that little theory of yours.
PoliticsRe: Census Results Out - More Males Than Females by demmy(m): 5:06pm On Jan 06, 2007
Donzman said,

Ask any Geographer or Urban planner worth his salt. A market town like Onitsha is more populated than an administrative one like Akure. This is a known urban planning fact especially for a country like Nigeria where more people are into trading as opposed to education/administration.
So by the same theory Onitsha would also be more populated than Ibadan, Enugu, Ilorin, Port Harcourt etc, cities not known for their large market but rather as administrative centres. Correct?

Actually its the reverse order that will happen. Yar'dua is probably brought in to be VP to Duke but mainly to scatter IBB and Atiku's ambition. That goal is largely achieved. IBB has quit PDP as expected and Atiku is in limbo, a dead man walking. Obasanjo for all his undemocratic behavior is still the most committed to the Nigerian project.

grin grin grin grin Dokubo at his funniest

Asari-Dokubo, supporters chant war songs in court
From Lemmy Ughegbe, Abuja

IT was a Federal High Court in Abuja, yet it looked like a theatre of war as the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force (NDPVF), Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo and his members took it over, chanting Ijaw war songs to re-affirm their readiness to lay down their lives for the freedom of the "Ijaw nation."

Asari-Dokubo stated that the Ijaw nation had the arsenal to wage war against President Olusegun Obasanjo and bring him to book for alleged crimes against humanity.

Like a choir master, Asari-Dokubo set the tone as he raised one song after another, with his members taking the cue and joining in.

The stage was set with the entry of the militant leader, who was escorted into the court of Justice Babs Kuewumi by security operatives at exactly 9.20 a.m. to resume his trial for alleged treasonable offences.

Dressed in black jeans trousers and a black T-shirt with the picture of Major Isaac Adaka Borro on it, Asari-Dokubo embraced some of his kinsmen and supporters and shook hands with others before taking his seat.

Having been cut off from his people, most of them turned themselves into emergency photographers, wanting to take something of him (his picture) back home. They had no cameras, so they improvised with their camera phones.

Ijaw faithful were quick to explain that the songs basically were re-affirming their unalloyed and unbending desire for self-determination.

"One of the songs we sang simply said we will fight for freedom of our people. We will die for our people to be free. Nobody can stop us," a member of the NDPVF explained.

Apparently fired up by the war songs, Asari-Dokubo sent a stern warning to President Olusegun Obasanjo, whom he said would someday be tried for alleged crimes against humanity.

In his address, Asari-Dokubo said Obasanjo was of the erroneous view that incarcerating him would break his spirit, make him beg for freedom and abandon the Ijaw cause.

"0basanjo has eaten more than he can chew. He thinks he can break my spirit and make me beg by putting me in prison. It is a lie. I can never beg."

He added: "I am ready to pay the ultimate price for my people to be free. The struggle is my life. We must be free! The Ijaw people must be free! The Ijaw nation must be free!"

The full address of Asari-Dokubo reads:

"I can see Obasanjo falling. He is falling. He is falling. Some people thought we were lying. Today, it is clear that we are now having a man, out to devour everybody.

"I promise him that the Ijaws will follow him every inch, every step of the way. I will be alive to see Obasanjo in chains and tried for crimes against humanity. The masses and the down-trodden will then have freedom.

"Freedom is not negotiable. The charlatans he gathered together as leaders of our people are no leaders. They won't be able to change the course of revolution.

"He has not come to terms with the reality of the Niger Delta, he will surely be brought down. He will be tried over the crimes he committed against Odi and Odioma. There will be no more Odi, no more Odioma.

"Let me say clearly that for every Ijaw person he kills, hundreds of his people will be killed in his stead. We are ready to meet him arms for arms, arsenal for arsenal. If all these do not work, we will use everything, including biological weapons.

"I am not an Owu captive. My father was a king, who fought their battle for them. I challenge Obasanjo to battle; the battle line has already been drawn.

"Obasanjo has eaten more than he can chew, he thinks he can break my spirit and make me beg him. It is a lie, I can never beg. The struggle is my life. It is Allah that gives life and it is Allah that takes it. It is Allah that establishes sovereignty and it is Allah that brings it down. Obasanjo shall be brought down Insha Allah.

"Somebody, who is fighting corruption, is giving arms out to counter revolution. We are not afraid to pay the ultimate price.

"When a lion roars, the hunter tames him. Obasanjo is the lion that has roared. I am the hunter and I will tame him".

No sooner had he finished than the trial Judge, Justice Babs Kuewum entered the court room at about 9.55am for the proceedings of the day.

The court clerk announced the treason case brought by government against the militant leader.

The Federal Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Malam Saliu Aliyu announced appearance for government, while Festus Keyamo announced appearance for Asari-Dokubo. They were both leading other juniors.

Keyamo drew the attention of the court to an application before the court, seeking a stay of further proceedings pending the hearing and determination of Asari-Dokubo's appeal, challenging the refusal of the judge to disqualify himself on the grounds of an alleged bias.

The appeal lodged at the Court of Appeal (Abuja Division) is scheduled for hearing on May 9 this year.

The application for stay, being just filed this morning, was not ripe for hearing, hence Justice Kuewumi adjourned arguments on it to May 5, this year.

PoliticsRe: Niger Delta: What Is The Problem? by demmy(m): 9:47am On Apr 13, 2006
@owo

Apparently you are choosing to forget the point of my argument with you. You're forgetting that I stated those quoted facts to debunk your earlier claim that the problem in Niger-delta and largely in Nigeria is due to tribalism. I disagreed and still does that this is the case and I tried to show you what I think with my "unlearned reading" complicate the Niger delta problem in addition to our general lack of competence leadership: a) the complicity of its local and national leaders in the continue degradation and b) the region's lack of political autonomy.

Now these as you claimed are irrelevant factors as already analysed at better informed fora but you're still to show what in your opinion the real factors are. The Attah's suggestion you mentioned simply coroborate my contention that the region lack political autonomy. Is PDP the party from where he can give "political prominence/relevance" to radical thoughts like that?
PoliticsRe: Niger Delta: What Is The Problem? by demmy(m): 5:28pm On Apr 12, 2006
@ono

You are making more sense than the tribal obsessed owo and I agree with you on that. I never deny that fat theives in Abuja are looting more oil money than local thieves in the creeks. As far as I'am concern they are all thieves and should be dealt with. In fact from the begining of this thread I've said that our problem are our looting leaders. I also believe that the current 13% derivation or the proposed 18% are not satisfactory. However I won't stand for it when someone try to turn it into a tribal issue or that extortionist groups like MEND represent the interest of Niger Delta people.

I've tried to show all along that Niger delta people contrary to owo's claims are not marginalized in the federal bureaucracy (Niger delta indigenes are second only to Yorubas in the federal civil service) or that their elites are powerless (e.g CDS Ogomudia, Daukoru and Omiyi and others all in very high positions) and that their fortune would have been better if their national and local leaders had made better political choices in the past instead of choosing for instance Shagari who merely deprived them more of their oil earnings.

Now my position is this we should put collective pressure on the national and local leaders by demanding for accountability. I think this is clear enough. owo's tribal ranting about inheritance and portion are very far from my personal principle.
