Believe me they were from Machiavelli's the prince. They were the same advise he gave to any prince intending on keeping on to power. Robert Green summarized his (machiavelli's) core points and made a modern book out of them.

PoliticsRe: Appeal Court Voids Ngige's Election by demmy(m): 2:05pm On Mar 16, 2006
C'mon people this has nothing to do with Obasanjo and his ongoing feud with Ngige. May I remind you that the election tribunal had earlier made the same ruling and Ngige was only able to stay on in office because he AND INEC huh appealed that decision.

And did you all read the judges' scathing verdict on INEC? superb.
PoliticsRe: What Has Pdp Abuja Government Done For The Yorubas? by demmy(m): 4:25am On Mar 16, 2006
I agree and this is why the Yoruba conservative politicians were distrusted in Yorubaland in the past until the last election. They lack substance except merely to occupy political posts. Look at all Obasanjo's Yoruba ministers. They have failed (except maybe Adebayo) in contrast with their Igbo colleagues. I hope the Yorubas will return back to Awo's idea: principled, substantive politics even if it means you have to be the opposition. This mainstream mediocrity is doing irreparable damage to the Yorubas future and not good for Nigeria either.

A lot of thse other countries you are talking about have a database of everyone from when they are born, so that makes life easier. Unfortunately, we don't have any form of filing or database, so counting needs time
Yeah you remind me. I've forgotten that we've wasted the past 40 years doing nothing. cry

CANADA will be doing there but that won't stop people from going their daily business, there r a lot wayz to coount people even Canadians outside Canada can be counted in via online or Canadian embassy in their host country
But Canada is not beset by corruption that might tarnish census result as in Nigeria. What I don't get is why it has to take 5 days to do.

PoliticsRe: The Western Media's Portrayal Of Africa by demmy(m): 8:52pm On Mar 13, 2006
As usual I have to agree with ijebuman on this one too. Bad images of Africa has crystallized into prejudiced opinion on Africa here in Europe. They believe that we do nothing else in Africa outside of sit around and die of AIDS, hunger and other various afflictions. Lets be frank most of those bad images are encouraged by the so called non-profit organisations (africans and non) calling for aids on Africa's behalf to do big business.
PoliticsRe: Niger Delta: What Is The Problem? by demmy(m): 6:24pm On Mar 13, 2006
The gas masterplan that has just be completed is in the books, go and read about it.
Now citing of gas facilities is to be done so as to reflect 'national character' because of the obvious benefits. When it was being flared, it is only the Niger Delta that bore the brunt.
If that is not tribalism/regionalism etc, then nothing else it. Have you not heard of OK LNG?
@owo
I don't think you need national character to lay gas facilities throughout the federation or else how would other parts of the country peruse LNG in future. Unless there is something I'm missing here of course so do point an appropriate books' title.

I'm afraid you need to know more about Nigeria Oil industry and the day-to day happenings and intrigues before you comment on things like this.
I agree I don't. I do know however that the reason the Northern oligarch has held on to power (until now) for so long and eventually destroyed the true federalism we started out with at independent was with tacit agreement of the south-south voters. Tell me when did the south-south (until last election) voted along with the rest of the southerners to dislodge this destructive oligarch? At independence all the regions got back all the revenue derived from their regions. At that time Eastern region was actually posting better economic returns than the rest of the regions due to oil, returns it eventually squandered on futile secessionist adventure. In 1974-75 after the federal government had reduced the derivation to 45% Rivers and Mid-west states were allocated 241 million naira (even though they both had a combined population of 4.1 million) compared with 104 million naira to the four remaining regions (with combined population of 30.2 million), this progressive reduction continued until the second republic of Shagari (who was over-whelmingly voted for by the minorities in Niger Delta) when it was ultimately taken away. The south-south's fear of domination from the major ethnics in the south made them aligned themselves politically with the conservative retrogressive North and the present is the result of that choice.
PoliticsRe: Third Term Agenda <Vote, Comments> by demmy(m): 5:43pm On Mar 13, 2006
Now my argument here is that, as we know we are all immortal, how come OBJ does not have an array of followers who have been groomed by him and believe in his ideals and can readily be trusted to take over from him anytime?
This is what i would expect him to do myself. Take Yelsin for example he knew that if he was not careful Russia could go to the mafias; to avoid that he personally handpicked Putin to help safeguard the democracy. Dose of limited autocracy is not bad if use wisely. Obasanjo however has not only failed to strenghten democracy he has also failed to produce ideological followers whom he could entrust the continuation of whatever achievement he wants to safeguard with by looking for third term. If they could only follow the rule of law,

Its cetain that Basil Omiyi is not a tribalist
You're being unnecessarily enigmatic. I can't discern what you mean to say. sorry.

On Basil Omiyi. Its good to know that he is not a tribalist but that is not the point here. The point is he head the company that is destroying his very own environment and you mean to say he can't do nothing about it? I understand he has just taken over but I would still expect him to have some kind of plan at least as the gas flaring is concern. But I guess none of that matter because according to you he is a stooge and the real problem are (the yoruba) tribalists who are hindering the likes of him.

He added that a former governor in the Niger Delta and some powerful politicians were funding the militants.
I smell Alams here no doubt.

Earlier, the Minister of State for Defence, Rowland Oritejafor, had lamented the path chosen by the militants to express their anger. He added that the present administration had done a lot to ameliorate the situation in the Niger Delta. He said the Federal Government had taken some measures to prevent the situation from deteriorating into a conflagration. The committee members urged the Defence Headquarters to swing into action before the situation got out of hand.
Watch the agitators dismiss Dr. Rowland Oritsajafor, a niger deltan as a stooge.

Several militant groups in the region, particularly the Front for Ijaw Survival and Hope (FISH) had demanded Zamani's removal as one of the conditions for the release of the nine expatriate hostages.
Zamani came under severe criticism following his approval to use helicopter gunship to strike at illegal bunkerers in Gbaramatu kingdom, Warri South-West Council, Delta State, after the militants released the first four hostages taken on January 11 in Bayelsa State.
Only this is false. Zamani did not order the bombing. Gen Ogomudia did.

http://allafrica.com/stories/200602160079.html

Hammed said the task force commander, Brig. Gen Elias Zamani, in turn reported to the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Alexander Ogomudia, who ordered the air strike.

Besides, if we take a closer look at these things, Alams is from a region that produces the bulk of the nations wealth. Alams is from Amassoma, a village that is home to several oil fields, producing the eggs that nourish OBJ & Sons purse. Why should he not take something that flows from his back yard?

On the other hand, OBJ & Son are from Owu, an enclave that practically generates NOTHING to the natonal purse. So, why should OBJ persecute Alams in the first place.
Incoherent arguments proffered by Niger Delta agitators:

1) Niger delta leaders are stooges

2) Niger delta leaders have right to steal since the resources come from their backyards.

3) Non Deltans (read Yorubas) are the cause of chaos in Niger delta and are the ones benefiting from it.

PoliticsRe: Chief Obafemi Awolowo: National Hero Or Villain? by demmy(m): 9:00pm On Mar 07, 2006
owo:
This question takes the wind out of your argument, you may want to rephrase / represent it.

Indeed that action, maybe indavertently, became the chief springboard for the practise of tribalism in that region and other areas.
1st) How many non-easterners were candidates for the election into the Eastern Region Assembly in 1956? And was any elected?

2nd) It was the political maneuverings on the part of Awolowo that people instead interpreted as tribalism. People defected from one party to another so often in those days and also Awolowo never make it an issue during the campaigne "that Zik was Igbo". It was merely a coincidence that Zik an Igbo was a victim of these political maneuverings. Not intended as a tribal issue. Eventually Akintola did defected from Awolowo and AG lost the Western Region. Now if both were from different tribes people would surely interpreted Akintola's action as tribalism which was clearly not.
PoliticsRe: Chief Obafemi Awolowo: National Hero Or Villain? by demmy(m): 6:29pm On Mar 07, 2006
On the other hand, some people simply see him as a nasty piece of work. Survivors of the Biafran War hold Awolowo - the wartime Nigerian minister of finance and deputy chairperson of the war cabinet – responsible for fanatically championing Nigeria's notorious "starvation as weapon/quick kill" strategy on Biafra, which resulted in the death of a huge percent of the total Igbo war casualty including children. They are not quick to forget the £20.00-limit financial/economic strangulation he placed on them immediately after the war, at a time when he instigated the privatisation of many Government owned concerns.
I wouldn't even try to defend him on this. To me his whole involvement in the Gowon administration was a blemish for a supposedly democrat. But the blame for the war lies with others not him.

A number of political commentators still believe that Awolowo single-handedly pioneered tribalism in Nigerian Politics.
Awolowo's political parties were opened to anybody from anywhere in the country to join as member and he did had members from all over country so for the life of me I can never understand the charge of tribalism concerning his person. For sure his party took the Western Region away from Azikwe pre-independent 1956 election but weren't they political opponents? Was Awolowo obliged to assist Azikwe win? And was a Yoruba elected as premier in other regions?

It is alleged and not decisively verified that he ‘promised’ to pull the Western region out of Nigeria if the Eastern Region did so, only to ‘chicken’ out when reality dawned on him.
Odumegwu Ojukwu who was in a position to know has never come out to allege such a thing so why is it still being peddle?

This indictment trailed him and somewhat unjustly gave members of his tribe an unwarrantable tag of spinelessness
Adekunle Fajuyi heroically choose to die along with Aguiyi Ironsi. Is that spineless?
PoliticsRe: IBB For President (2007) by demmy(m): 5:30pm On Mar 07, 2006
@delekan Nigeria is what it is today mainly because of Babangida. He didn't just destroyed the economy along with what was left of the middle class he also slapped us with communal insult by indignantly annuling what was the freest and fairest election in Nigeria and he laid the foundation for the scourging corruption raging the land today. Furthermore he hasn't answered for Dele Giwa's death and what happened to the $12billion '92 Gulf war windfall. There are others more qualified if we look at the right direction.
