Since i am in a writing mood today, I'd share an ayah about the motivations for marriage for men. This would explain why i am not married yet to an extent.

Often times, a young man wants to get married because his desires seem to be overwhelming him. It is not uncommon for men to put forward the argument of not falling into fitnah. We also often see that the marriage becomes a means of just fulfilling that lust. The comprehensive view of marriage is absent for many.

The desire for women is natural. Allah tells us that much.

Allah says in the Quran (roughly translated):

The love of desirable things is made alluring for men– women, children, gold and silver treasures piled up high, horses with fine markings, livestock, and farmland– these may be the joys of this life, but God has the best place to return to. (Surah 3:14)

Number one on the list: Women.

The desire is within us, we just have to navigate it properly within the limits of Islam. Are lusts enough motivation to get married? If this is your only motivation for getting married then your concept of married will be no different from that of animals. Marriage is supposed to build your deen, it is called half your deen for a reason.

So what should be the motivation of getting married ??

Allah uses a very interesting phrase to describe the motivations for marriage in the Quran:

....muhsineena ghayra musafiheena ... (Surah 4:24)

Allah describes marriage as bringing women into your fort (Muhsineena). A Fort is a heavily protected military base, where you keep your cavalry.

So here the man is described as the owner of a fort, and he is described as bring the woman, he is going to marry into that forte meaning he is going to protect her and take care of her. A sheltered environment. That is the motivation for you to get married.

Then Allah says:

ghayra musafiheena

not just to get your lusts out of the way (roughly translated)

So the fact that your hormones are raging are not enough reason to get married. Your hormones are not the right reason to get married.

You have to be able to provide that fort for your wife.

This makes so much sense. I remember a time when bros and sisters in Nigerian Universities were getting married without parent consent just because they could not 'wait'.

Many of the ladies had to drop out of school.

onegig: I know people have to sacrifice but please lets be realistic and try be in the shoes of these ladies. We all know the temptation, pressure the society puts in their path. Islam encourages early marriage , so sacrificing time shouldn't be a criteria. Also we do all our levels of resistance and endurance.

The question is since we know all these problems do we let them pass through all these torments and added challenges just to show how strong their faith is? Why can't the society address the anomaly. Its not something that hard. It's just about facilitating an halal avenue for these muslims to meet.

Its easy for you to wait. ..you are a guy. You have control over your waiting period, but these ladies most times don't have control over this as they have to wait for a man to come knocking on their doors.

That is exactly what this discussion should be about. We should not just be fault finding but should find a solution to the problem. You nailed it jare.


I saw a 23 yr olds post on FB ystrdy. She was talking of how happy and single she is. She is too young for that, I thought but she is probably silencing the critiques early on, making them realise she won't take less than she wants even if she'll have to be single forever.

That is not a too good mindset. But I share same with her. We are from the same background and I know what she means very well.

Now someone would think not being married is a problem to us because of their own mentality(like I have distant relatives whose younger than me daughters already have children). But we are just ok with our lives.

However, any solution to what we see as problems should be welcome and not dismissed by the larger society . In fact we need a large intergenerational fora for interactions among Muslims.

After writing it, I thought to edit and add some as a prefix. Then I thought people here would already know that I didn't mean all.

I know many Muslims that are the opposite of what I described. I definitely cannot say that everyone is that way. My writing is in the context of what is being discussed.

There is a thread about the strong Muslim woman. I was going to say on that thread that, society has failed to train enough Men who can stand shoulder ahead or at least shoulder to shoulder with the women. If these women wont find compatible men in terms of their social status and reasoning capability among Muslims and don't have the type of Eiman to keep firm and hopeful, they'll definitely fall to the other side.

I must say again, that the Christian so much wants to keep her and will do EVERYTHING possible unlike the Muslim who is more laid back about it.

Polygamy is a big problem too. Girls who saw how their own fathers did it wrong will more likely run away from it. A christian at least provides the assurance of monogamy(which almost every lady wants btw) since his religion forbids it and with him, she is the LEGAL wife.

I know a Muslim girl who said she would not marry a Muslim. She never said why but I assume from other discussions that her mother had so much problems in her marriage. She attributes them to her Father's Muslim family.

A ladies event in Muslim weddings is supposed to be a very private affair especially with a belly dancer involved.


The ladies get to dance and shake up without men gazing. Taking the pictures and sharing with the public defeats the initial purpose.
