[BREAKING] Court orders National Assembly to stop election re-ordering bill
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday ordered the National Assembly to stop taking any further actions on the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2018 , which seeks to provide the order in which the Independent National Electoral Commission must conduct the 2019 general elections .
The restraining order issued by Justice Ahmed Mohammed is to last till March 17, which is the next hearing date .
Delivering ruling on an oral application by Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), lawyer to the plaintiff, Accord Party, Justice Mohammed held that the restraining order was made to preserve the substance of the main suit.
President Muhammadu Buhari had, on Tuesday, informed the National Assembly that he had withheld his assent to the bill which was earlier passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.
There have been threats by some legislators that the National Assembly would evoke its powers under Section 58 (5) of the Constitution to override the President ’ s withholding of assent by two- thirds majority votes of both chambers .
The oral application by Olanipekun for a “preservative order” was opposed by the counsel representing the National Assembly, Chinelo Ogbozor, during Wednesday ’ s proceedings.
The Attorney- General of the Federation , the second defendant to the suit, was not represented by a counsel.
But INEC, the third respondent, was represented by its lawyer , Mr. Taminu Inuwa, who said he had no objection to the application.
Ruling , the judge held that the National Assembly was not likely to suffer any prejudice if it was restrained from going ahead with the amendment processes before the next hearing date .
He added that on the other hand, if no restraining order was issued and the National Assembly went ahead to exercise its powers under Section 58 (5) of the Constitution by overriding the President ’ s withholding of assent, the essence of the whole suit would have been defeated .
The judge therefore ordered all parties to maintain the “ status quo . ”
He fixed Tuesday for the hearing of the motion for the interlocutory injunction, the same order which was granted during the Wednesday ’s proceedings but would likely last till the final determination of the suit if the application succeeds .
The Accord Party is , by its suit, challenging the constitutionality of the ongoing amendment of the Electoral Act .

OBAFEMI AWOLOWO
He enrolled at the University of London as an External Student and graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.). He went to the UK in 1944 to study law at the University of London and was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple on 19 November 1946.[4][6]

Apart from his face being on 100 Naira notes, some other achievements of the late sage who hailed from Ikenne, Ogun State are catalogued below;

1.) He named Nigeria’s national currency as ‘Naira’ when he was the Federal Commissioner for Finance. The late sage took the name of Nigeria and collapsed it as ‘Naira’

2.) Awolowo introduced free primary education for all and free health care for children in the Western Region.
3. )He established the first television station in Africa in 1959.

4. )He also erected the first skyscraper in tropical Africa:the Cocoa House (still the tallest in Ibadan).

5.) Awo as fondly called was conferred by President Shehu Shagari with the title of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR), the first and only non-president to be so honoured in recognition of his sterling qualities and contributions to the service of the country.

6.) He was the first individual in the modern era to be named Leader of the Yorubas (Yoruba: Asiwaju Omo Oodua), a title which has come over time to be conventionally ascribed to his successors as the recognized political leader of the Yoruba peoples of Nigeria.

7.) The man widely believed by admirers to be the best President Nigeria never had was the first Leader of Government Business and Minister of Local Government and Finance and first Premier of the Western Region under Nigeria’s parliamentary system, from 1952 to 1959.

8.) In 1949 he founded the Nigerian Tribune, the oldest surviving private Nigerian newspaper, which he used to spread nationalist consciousness among his fellow Nigerians.

9.) The party he founded, Action Group was the first to move the motion for Nigeria’s independence in the federal parliament and he obtained internal self-government for the Western Region in 1957.

10.) The University of Ife was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University on 12 May 1987 in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, whose brainchild the university was.

In 1992, the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation was founded as an independent, non-profit, non-partisan organisation committed to furthering the symbiotic interaction of public policy and relevant scholarship with a view to promoting the overall development of the Nigerian nation. The Foundation was launched by the President of Nigeria at that time, General Ibrahim Babangida, at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan.[12] However, his most important bequests (styled Awoism) are his exemplary integrity, his welfarism, his contributions to hastening the process of decolonisation and his consistent and reasoned advocacy of federalism-based on ethno-linguistic self-determination and uniting politically strong states-as the best basis for Nigerian unity.


CHUKWUEMEKA ODUMEGWU OJUKWU
Emeka Ojukwu started his secondary school education at CMS Grammar School, Lagos aged 10 in 1943.[10] He later transferred to King's College, Lagos in 1944 where he was involved in a controversy leading to his brief imprisonment for assaulting a white British colonial teacher who humiliating a black woman. This event generated widespread coverage in local newspapers.
At 13, his father sent him overseas to study in the United Kingdom, first at Epsom College and later at Lincoln College, Oxford University, where he earned a master's degree in History. He returned to colonial Nigeria in 1956.
Ojukwu joined the civil service in Eastern Nigeria as an Administrative Officer at Udi, in present-day Enugu State. In 1957, within months of working with the colonial civil service, he left and joined the military as one of the first and few university graduates to join the army as a recruit: O. Olutoye (1956); C. Odumegwu-Ojukwu (1957), Emmanuel Ifeajuna and C. O. Rotimi (1960), and A. Ademoyega (1962).

He had contested as presidential candidate of his party, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for the last three of the four elections. Until his illness, he remained the party leader. The party was in control of two states in and largely influential amongst the Igbo ethnic area of Nigeria.
Ojukwu was named after anambra state university and Memorial International Library and Convention Centre located in owerri.

Prof Dike Kenneth was made vice principal of the University College Ibadan ahead of the most senior African on the academic board and first ever Nigerian professor, Prof. Oladele Ajose.

Dike's appointment was facilitated by the Igbo dominated NCNC who had also installed Dr Akanu Ibiam who was the first Igbo doctor, as the School Council chairman. While Oladele Ajose was most senior and readily available at the school, Dike was called back from the USA where he was on an unfinished sabbatical, to come take a position (Vice Principal) he wasn't the most qualified for.

When the British eventually withdrew their administration of the school, Akanu Ibiam as School Council Chairman, further ensured that Kenneth Dike who was a fellow Igbo like him, became the first Nigerian principal of University College Ibadan. Professor Oladele Ajose realised that he was forever going to remain a victim of the NCNC and Igbo version of "merit" system that only found the Igbos qualified for positions that their better educated and more experienced Yoruba superiors did not qualify for. Ajose read the Igbo writing on the wall and moved to the Western Region owned University of Ife, to become its first principal.

Prof Kenneth Dike and Akanu Ibiam led school council would eventually go on to conduct recruitment into UI after the departure of the British. Out of 115 new hires, only 3 were Yorubas while the bulk of the remainder were from the Eastern Region.

That is how Igbos practice a merit based system.

The foolish Yorubas who were members of NCNC were never offered any sensitive position in the NPC/NCNC partnership of the first republic. Not even the Eastern minorities were offered critical positions.

All that was good that the Northerners could not occupy, the Azikiwe led NCNC ensured it went to the Eastern region, and ultimately to only the Igbos of that multi-ethnic Eastern Region.

1966: THE MURDER OF BRIGADIER SAMUEL ADEMULEGUN AND HIS PREGNANT WIFE

"Timothy, how did you get in here and what the devil do you think you are doing?" Brigadier Samuel Ademulegun, commanding officer of the 1st Brigade Nigerian Army, Kaduna, asked bewilderedly as he saw Major Timothy Onwuatuegwu and five other soldiers pointing their submachine guns at him and his startled pregnant wife, Latifah.

They had gained access to his bedroom in his house at 1, Kashim Ibrahim Road, Kaduna at approximately 2:05am on that day, January 15, 1966, having passed through with little resistance from his guards commanded by Lance Corporal Lawrence Akuma and three sappers of the Nigerian Army Engineers.

Ademulegun was a "first class soldier" and the second most senior officer after Aguiyi-Ironsi. His army number was N3. As an officer of that magnitude, he was the most protected personality in the whole of Northern Nigeria. Even more protected than the Premier and Governor of the Northern Region. His guards, drawn from the 3rd infantry battalion, guarded not only the inside and outside of his compound but his main house too. But the guards had been compromised and had led Onwuatuegwu straight into the Brigadier's bedroom where he was just in his singlet and knicker.

"Get dressed and come with us sir. Those are my instructions; to bring you to the headquarters," Onwuatuegwu said to the Brigadier. It sounded like nonsense to him. As the commander of that headquarters since 1964, he was the only one who could give such an order. But all the while, his wife Latifah, 8 months pregnant, planted herself fearlessly between her husband and the pointed guns.

In the top bedside drawer was a service pistol. As a Brigadier, Ademulegun knew a pistol was no contest for 6 soldiers armed with submachine guns. But he would rather fight and die gallantly than degrade the honour of his office by surrendering to subordinates.

As he made a quick dash for the drawer, Onwuatuegwu opened fire on the Brigadier, his wife and the unborn child. Ademulegun's children, Kole (13 years) and Solape (6 years) were in the next room. They heard all the clash and were the first to see their lifeless parents surrounded by a pool of blood.

Onwuatuegwu and his mutineers who had turned Ademulegun's children to early orphans, then strolled out unchallenged by the guards to the home of Colonel Ralph Shodeinde, Deputy Commandant of Nigerian Defence Academy whom Ademulegun usually hand over the Brigade to when he was not around. He was also killed in cold blood and his wife shot in the hands and legs.

Brigadier Samuel Adesujo Ademulegun was born, October 23, 1923 in Ondo town, present day Ondo State. The son of Mr and Mrs Michael Ademulegun. He had his early education in Owo also in Ondo State and joined the Nigerian Army as a Private in 1942. He was the third Nigerian commissioned into the Army after Bassey and Aguiyi-Ironsi in 1949. Though his burial place is unknown, there is a cenotaph erected for him in Ondo.
