A friend confided in me of late and I figured I should bring it in here for you guys to read, and share your thoughts.

My friend has a girlfriend, and this girlfriend has been asking my friend for a phone of late. Due to the fact that the friend has not been able to assist with a phone, she decided to inform him that she would ask for loan from one of the guys wooing her, since the guy is rich and the boyfriend is still hustling to make ends meet.

The phone is kind of urgent because the babe doesn't have a phone and she is broke as well.

I told the guy that the moment she goes ahead to ask for loan from A TOASTER, then she has given the toaster the perfect opportunity to lay claim on her!

I told him to tell her a NO, but then the guy does not have the cash for a new phone for his girlfriend.

It just beats me why a LADY would just do that? It is very wrong in all sense of it!

Or am I being paranoid to ask the guy not to accept this 'crazy' suggestion from his girlfriend?

These were the observations from the visit and interviews:

One of the persons interviewed mentioned the fact that the village needs electricity
They need more speed boats to transport the school children from the village to Badagry town
Gberefun village does not have a pipe borne water, the community fetches from a central well (isn't this pathetic, really?)
They need corporate organizations to come to their aid to assist them with infrastructures no matter how little, since these corporate organizations send their representatives to make purchases from the Gberefun town.

All in All, well meaning Nigerians can also lend a helping hand to these people, a little assistance here and there would definitely go a long way to impart their lives positively.

In a Village that houses fishermen and other artisans, Gberefun is indeed a haven when it comes to fishing, and this is evident by the domination of the community by fisherman.

As expected we paid a visit to the Palace of the Oba Akran of Gbadagry where we learned about the history of Badagry. Founded around 1425 AD, people lived along the coast of Gberefun, (where we went to). Gberefu Village is an island few minutes away from Badagry, 2 hours from Lagos and 30 minutes from Benin Republic.

The name of the town was informed to have evolved from Agbedegreme (which means Agbedeh’s farm in “Ogu” lan­guage) to Agbedagari and from Agbedagari to Badagry by Yoruba settlers and European slave traders respectively.

Badagry is lorded over by the Wheno Aholuship, a kingship head by the Oba Akran of Badagry and has about 7 white cap high chiefs, that takes care of the quarter which the Badagry town is divided into. These quarters are Aho­vikoh, Boekoh, Jegba, Posukoh, Awhanjigo, Asago, Whalako and Ganho.

Entry into the Gberefun Village from Badagry town.

The sea port is the first port of call after leaving the Badagry town. Boats are already on ground to move transporters from the Mainland to the Island, here you get to stay on the boat for about 8 minutes before reaching the other side of the River - the Island.

On getting to the island, there are motor bikes on ground to take you 20 minutes into Gberefun village. ( How the motorbikes got to the other side of the river, I do not know).

What will be the joy in this life if we do not seek out people in obscure locations to check out how they live and how we can impact them positively.

I continued my lifelens trip with my journey to Badagry, Lagos State.

We all know Badagry as that location (based on history) where the slave trade happened.

The Lifelens documentary is not really about telling stories about the history of Badagry town, but forging out a narrative of the people living on the other side of the River, the Island of Gberefun.

Do we even know what paid dating is?

My interview with an Instagram follower who schools in one of the Universities in Lagos State will just give you an idea.

‘All I know is that you go out and they give you 30k for coming. I’ve not been there but I’ve been invited by my friends.

I couldn’t go because I don’t LIKE leaving Lagos. The people pick their choices. It’s like a lounge or bar, not really sure. Then, you go and DANCE, and get your money after the whole night. I don’t know who requests for my friends though. I did not ask! I sha know they are MEN!’

Paid dating is a new classy trend where Nigerian girls get profiled, and then picked by Nigerian men to be used as dates or escorts for events and outings.

It has been insinuated in different quarters that paid dating is different from Sugaring; where young girls and guys are hooked up with older men and women for some sort of sex work – A very common activity in Nigeria that became a trend. Ask University guys and girls, they know better.

What baffles me really is that, IS PAID DATING REALLY DIFFERENT FROM SUGARING?

With the increasing pressure and societal backlash on Sugaring, and more so that a lot of Sugar babies are beginning to consider the shame of being found out by family and friends to be Sugar for Daddies and Mummies, now evolved to Paid dating.

While prostitution is merely transaction based; pay me and let’s get down with it, everyone leaves happy. Paid dating adds a whole new level to the game.

Stringing meaningful conversation, enjoying material gifts, hanging out with influential people and having the meaningful poise and guile to make heads roll seem much to be the requisite to be a good paid dater.

I am sure you are finding this interesting already.

How does this really work?

According to an interview with a club manager in one of the top night clubs in Lagos:

‘Buyers (men/ women in need of a dater or escort) approaches a middleman ( not love-vendor though); a guy or lady who provides young and older men with girls and guys (sellers). These prospective sellers then send their pictures via social media to the prospective buyer and then a match is made.’

Match is usually dependent on beauty, class and carriage of the prospective date/ escort. Thereafter, buyers then chats middleman to conclude on the availability of the preferred match by making an OFFER.


You are shocked? Hold on, there is still more!

There are also rules to the paid dating/ escort process:

Rule 1: I pay for your time, you follow me to a social gathering as a date or an escort **no strings attached**

Rule 2: If you behave and comport yourself well at the first meet/ date/ event, you get TIPPED by the offeror.

While a lot of people have validated paid dating and escorting as being a legitimate job devoid of sexual and other intimate acitivities that could lead to it being termed sugaring or prostitution and further that paid dating has been accepted in the US through Whatsyourprice.com, there is no true justification that something else does not go on, in the background.

How do you just accompany a man/ woman out on a first date, just as a figure head or date escort to be paid a large amount of money! In our present day, Nigeria? Beats me!

If I approach a supposed middleman for a young girl as escort and date with the plan to ‘PAY’ her for escorting, how logical does this really sound and what kind of escort will a young lady and guy be to a man.

Escort service should be done by security personnel who are skilled and competent enough to act as escorts.

I can agree with the fact that PAID dating might not be the new form of prostitution in Nigeria, however the following questions are what begs to be answered:

– To what extent of bargaining will there be between the buyer and the seller of a paid dating service. Is there a fixed price already?

– How will the buyer enjoy the money paid even with the extra ‘TIPS’ based on good behavior and how does the seller maximize gain in this process

– How do both parties manage perceptions and expectations especially where money is involved

– What infact forms the basis of behaving well?

I am very sure that by now, finding answers to these seemingly obvious questions, will make you think twice about the practicality and reasonableness of PAID DATING.

But then, I leave the conclusion to YOU!

It is suffice to say though that nowadays, you see everyone participating in one or two online dating service, and they claim they get paid for joining an online dating service. Hmmmn!

Now is the time to shine your eyes! Your girlfriend, sister, niece, nephew might just be the paid dater and paid escort for one Pot-Bellied Senator or Businessman.

Has paid dating come to stay? Is this the new form of prostitution? I leave the answers to YOU!

Jane in her customary self had already bought food, ‘Ah Ofada, my favourite, and a five alive drink. Oh No, no drink today, I’d only do water.’

‘Make I enjoy today sha, I no go carry last!’ I said to myself

I excused myself and proceeded to the counter to pick a bottled water. The only lady who was the attendant was backing a wall that looked like the wall of my living room. Same painting, brown kind of glossy painting that reminded me of my wall in the wet dream.

Again I asked, please can I have a bottled water! She quickly jolted out of her trance like status and said ‘Ahhhhhh’. The sound reminded me of the Wet dream that I had and I began having this feeling of DejaVu.

Have I been here before? Do I know this babe from somewhere? Did we go to the same church? I was about asking her all these questions when she turned and then it HIT me straight to my face!

Can it be her? She was the girl? Oh my God, To say I was shocked was an understatement.

She smiled in my confusion, and said:

‘Hey Tola, Do you like me?!’ I remembered the words spoken by the faceless girl in my dreams which I could not hear when she mouthed them.

She continued ‘Unfortunately you did not allow us finish what we started! You are such a naughty boy!’

Shocked at the realization, bewildered at the thoughts and while trying to gather myself and the sudden turn of events! I slipped and fell on the marble floor of the eatery!

‘I woke up three hours later to the voice of Jane and Alhaji Audu. Where are we,’ I asked them. ‘We are at Randle hospital Dear,’ Jane responded.

‘You just fainted while you were about collecting water at the eatery and we had to bring you down here when you did not wake after trying all first aid.’

Interesting, why did I faint? What happened? Then I remembered, oh Dear, the girl, the dream girl. I have to go back, I need to see her!

The next day, I visited the eatery to inquire about mystery dream girl and was informed that she did not show up the following day, she just came to intern and they told her to come in for a mid test when I arrived to request for water!

There was no information that I could use. Mystery babe was gone! I was scared, what do I do? I must find mystery girl. I just have to find her! I don’t know why, but I have to!
