Politics / Re: Does Ethnicity Matter for Governorship? by diakim(m): 12:40pm On Aug 29, 2005
Ethnicity is a serious issue in Nigeria, and Africa at large . We have not yet grown to the level where we can practise the type of democracy practise in the civilised world.

What will happen if all the governourship seats for the South-East were captured by the Yourbas?
Or will their not be anarchy if all the governorship seats for the South-West were captured by the Hausas? Think on these and you will see why such a thing cannot happen in our own part of the world.
Career / Re: "Why I Hate Globacom" by Olabisi by diakim(m): 6:28pm On Aug 26, 2005
The guy Olabisi is on an act of Vendetta.. He is wasting his time and energy. If he has any thing against Globacom he should go to court and slug it out.

To you folks joining issues with Globacom here, tell me, which other Telecom company is not behaving likewise? Are you all saying you are giving a clean bill of health to MTN & VMobile?
Family / Re: How to Deal With a Wife That Nags a Lot by diakim(m): 9:22am On Aug 19, 2005
It's better to remain single for life than to be cursed with a nagging wife. A nagging woman ultimate aim is to control her husband. If the man is the quiet type who wants to avoid row at all cost, he will end up being her footmat.
Dating And Meet-up Zone / Re: When Your Online Friend Asks for Money or Gifts by diakim(m): 6:14pm On Aug 18, 2005
It's to my delight to have cut off so many people that not long after we know each other over the internet, not having met physically, started demanding for re-charge cards or mobile phones from me. I'd never posed myself as a 'big man' to anyone on the net before, so naturally, I will get pissed off and starts ignoring or blocks such individuals. Those are the generations of cyber-beggars.

It happens not only on the internet, but with GSM phones as well. You will just see a lot of requests for assistance from people who you barely know in form of text messages. Naturally, I ignore such requests. People need to wake up and have some sense of dignity.

Phones / Re: Alert! GSM 419 Experience. by diakim(m): 11:16am On Aug 12, 2005
We receive so many of such calls in my office.

Myself and my colleagues are so much used to them now that we normally lead them on pretending we've gone to the place they mentioned, and that we've purchased a unit of the said chemical, equipment or any item they mentioned. Eventually, they will discover that we are smarter than then, and they will suddenly stopped calling us.

Then we will proceed to calling them urging them to finish the business they started with us. Scared, they will end up switching off or replacing their GSM lines to avoid our calls. Talk of being smarter than the smarts grin
Webmasters / Re: What Motivated You To Start Your Blog? by diakim(m): 1:09pm On Aug 11, 2005
I am a phone freak. I just love those little gadgets, not because of the ability to make and receive calls, but because of other computing functions a cellphone can perform. Maybe this came naturally because I am an IT proffessional.

I spent 80% of my online time browsing phone related issues like visiting phone-related forums, reading other people's reviews on phones, checking manufacturers' websites for their phone specifications, and watching out for the latest gadgets by the top phone manufacturers.

Inside my room, you will find many spiral-binded articles, reviews, specifications, troubleshooting, etc on phones that I downloaded lying on my bed, wardrobe, shelf, stools, floor and everywhere.

Naturally, I love writing. So, it didn't take me too long before I decided to start blogging so that I can document and share my phone experience. This is the reason why I started writing Phonerism (previously called diakim's diary) which you can check out at http://diakim2..com

Because of this knowledge, my company normally give me the assignments of purchasing cellphones for her employees. Once I know the budget, and what features the person expected in the handset, and the preferred manufacturer, I will know which phone is best suited for the individual.
Phones / Re: Fixed Wireless Phones in Nigeria by diakim(m): 5:56pm On Aug 10, 2005
The Fixed Wireless phone is becoming very popular in Nigeria. Nearly every working class or middle-income homes have it now. It came as a relief to so many people who have been trying to get NITEL landlines in the past and were frustrated by NITEL inadequacies and lack of plans.

Though the market is not yet saturated, but we have many Fixed Wireless Operators in Nigeria now, who have helped to give NITEL and GSM operators good competition. Most of them provide data services as well as voice calls.

Most Home internet users are connected to Fixed Wireless Operators, who are striving hard now to compete for the available market, wooing prospective customers with a lot of incentives like free weeknd calls to their network, free weekend internet browsing, reduced international call rates between midnight and the early hours of the day, etc.
Phones / Re: Vmobile validity by diakim(m): 5:30pm On Aug 10, 2005
The fun has just started. This is a good thing to happen. Nigerian GSM subscribers are having the last laugh after all. I think I should get a VMobile line just to be able to monitor what is happening from their side.

I was not impressed though; just a measly N187 upon all my money they had eaten cheesy
Politics / Re: Enforcement of Sharia Law in Muslim States by diakim(m): 9:44am On Jul 29, 2005
"Religion is the opium of the society", courtesy of Sigmund Freud.

Instead of moving forward in this country, all we do is move backward. It is a pity. Instead of our leaders giving the people what they want, like employment, security of life and property, free and qualitative education, social amenities and infrastructure, good governance, etc, they give religion to the people.

It is all hypocrisy. "This is a society where thieves are chiefs; a society where morons are barons; a society where monkey de work baboon de chop". As long as we mix religion with politics, we can never make progress because religion blind the eyes of people. And this is what african leaders do generally, they use religion and ethnicity to perpetuate themselves in power.

We seriously need to prayer for Nigeria, otherwise we are forever doomed to religious and ethnic champions who parade themselves as leaders. May God deliver Nigeria from their hands (amen).

Phones / Re: MTN Voucher Validity and Access Days Increased! by diakim(m): 3:43pm On Jul 26, 2005
MTN has increased its access days!

I couldn't believe it either - I just found out that MTN has increased the access days on each recharge card. The 400 naira recharge card now comes with a 10 day access, the 750 Naira recharge card comes with a 30 days access, while that of 1500 Naira recharge card gives a whooping 60 days access!

The validity period has also been increased from 90 days to about a year or so.

The above was quoted directly from Nairaland forum, a popular Nigerian internet forum where Nigerians from home and abroad meet, hangout and discuss contemporary issues.

Being a critic of MTN myself, I took this news with a pinch of salt, But in other to prove them wrong, on my way home from work on Monday, I inserted my MTN Sim Card (which I have not used for the past 3 months or so) in my phone and went to recharge with N400. I purposely did that in order to confirm the veracity of the news I received from the forum.

This is because, earlier some folks have also been reporting in the forum that MTN is giving away one free SMS to its subscribers everyday. At the same time some members of the forums are still complaining that they are still being billed by MTN for all the SMS they sent that day. Since I've stopped using MTN for some time now, I couldn't really authenticate that.

Now, back to this issue of access days, I later dialed 556 after recharging with N400 to confirm my validity from the network, and it failed to connect. I tried throughout yesterday, and it will not go, but the *556# works, which does not display the validity. This was really annoying, considering that MTN is the only network in Nigeria that bills their customers for checking their validity or access to the network. Other operators will display the validity on the screen of your phone when checking your credit balance. Well, about 3 hours ago, I tried again and I received a confirmation that I have 10 days validity added to my MTN line from my last recharge, which was N400. This meant only one thing, that the story is true.

Well, I must say bravo to MTN. At least now, they are listening to the people. It pays MTN more to be a friendly network than the reputation it has previously gathered as being a money-conscious-sap-them-dry network. Just as one member in Nairaland aptly described MTN - 'Milk Those Nigerians'. I couldn't help but laughed when I read that.

What About SMS?
One area that still need to be addressed is the issue of the cost of SMS. I believe 15 Naira is too much for a text message. The GSM operators are cheating us. A text message should not cost more than 5 to 8 Naira maximum, as it does not congest the network. Those that are on contracts or post-paid should be sending SMS free or at least the first 100 SMS free. We need to look into this and make our dissatisfaction known to the GSM operators. It is by so doing, that we can get some relieve and not end up serving them with all our hard-earned money all in the name of servicing our GSM lines.

My Comments
Now, what do I have to say to this? Competition is good! We have to thank Globacom and VMobile for keeping MTN on their toes. If Globacom has not come, then MTN and his brother, VMobile would have milked [/i]us dry. They told us that Per Second Billing (PSB) cannot happened until after 3 years. Imagine! But when Glo introduced PSB, the whole story changed. Competition is very good. It prevents a monopoly or duopoly situation which existed between MTN and VMobile before the coming of Globacom. MTEL, being owned by the government, was as good as being non-existent then.

The battle has not yet be won. We must continue to criticise all these telecommunication companies that are not consumer-friendly. If we are all saying the same thing, then they will definitely listen.

Meanwhile, I congratulate MTN for listening to the voice of the people. With this now, I've revived my MTN line, to be used only in the night. But during the day, I stick to Glo, as Glo have more to offer me than MTN for the time being.

What is your reaction to this?

Computers / Re: HP Officejet Printer Problems (need qualified Technicians) by diakim(m): 2:17pm On Jul 26, 2005
Some of them are just a few months old. It is not really cost effective to replace them. But for those that are over one year, we've been doing replacement. I have too many faulty printers on my hands for comfort. We have at least 20 in our head office here in Lagos.
Computers / HP Officejet Printer Problems (need qualified Technicians) by diakim(m): 10:07am On Jul 26, 2005
Any Qualified HP Officejet Printers Technician In The House?

We have many HP Officejet printers in my office - HP Officejet D Series & HP Officejet 7100 Series. The common problem we are facing is the 'Scanner Bulb Failure' error when trying to make photocopies or scan a document. Those who are currently helping us to maintain them have not yet mastered this problem. Also, the HP office in Lagos is not helping matters as they only replace, but not repair, but with a refurbished one.

Is there anyone here skilled in this or that knows someone who is. Please post in this thread or PIM me.
Thanks.

Phones / Re: MTN's Nigeria's Lead in the Telecom Sector by diakim(m): 12:42pm On Jul 25, 2005
Glo rocks!

@Seun has said it all. Give a couple of years from now, MTN would have lost a substantial part of the market to Globacom and VMobile. They are fast catching up on it now. Just wait and see.

Are we going to eat wide coverage? What we need is a pocket-friendly and customer's satisfaction-conscious operator. The days of MTN's dominance in Nigeria's telecom industry is gradually over.

Hmmn, well said @CalabarMan. I agree totally with you.

I think one should get married to someone he considered a friend and wants that friendship to continue on a marital basis. If both are friends, they can always sort themselves out after every major and minor issues that crop up in marriage.

Business / Re: Can One Be 'Comfortable' Without Being Rich? by diakim(m): 4:09pm On Jul 18, 2005
To be comfortable in life:

- You need some cash in your pocket
- You must be able to pay your bills at the right time
- You should be able to afford the basic necessities of life
- If you are living in Lagos, and especially this raining season, you need a car to commute yourself
- To avoid being a perennial slave to your landlord, you need to build or buy your own house.

Now, if you can achieve these basic things without being rich, then you must be comfortable.
