Romance / Re: Nigerian Girls and their love for Recharge Cards by diakim(m): 10:10am On May 19, 2005
I think this is only common among school girls or non-working girls, as they have no source of income to recharge their phones. But for working class ladies, it is not so common.

For the former group, even if they recharge their phones in the morning, before the end of the day, their phones are out of credits again. They need to learn Credit Management. grin

Cellphones are meant for urgent or short calls, and not the type of gisting or story-telling that people do on cellphones in Nigeria. I stopped buying credits for my nieces when I dicovered that as soon as they recharged, they waste their credits on frivolous calls, all because they have access to free or easy call credits.

Phones / Nokia 9300 & 9500 Communicators Review by diakim(m): 10:36am On May 18, 2005
Nokia has just released two Smartphones Communicators to the market. The two communicators have more advanced features than the old Nokia 9210i communicator.
Both phones are packed with features for the techno-savvy individual. It is worth making a comparison between the two phones, Which will serve as a guide should you be interested in purchasing either of them.

It is important to note that these are not fancy phones; they are business phones. So, if you are looking for a stylish, fancy phone, you are making the wrong choice.

Nokia 9300 Features

Java, GPRS/EGPRS, MP3 Player, MMS-Enabled, Bluetooth, Infrared, USB Connection, Storage Media is MMC, Display (Pixels) 640x200 62k colour, MS Office Viewer, Weight 167g, Dimension(mm) 132x51x21

Nokia 9500 Features

Camera/Video, Java, GPRS/EGPRS, VPN Client, Wi-Fi, MP3 Player, MMS-Enabled, Bluetooth, Infrared, USB Connection, Storage Media is MMC, Display (Pixels) 640x200 62k colour, MS Office Viewer, Opera Browser, Weight 230g, Dimension(mm) 148x57x24

Pros of Both 9300 & 9500

Full QWERTY keyboard.
Great support for Microsoft Office documents of different versions (Word, Excel and Powerpoint).
80MB Internal Memory is really cool, with an extra 128MB on MMC that came with the phone, making a total of about 200MB memory for user to download applications, photos and music.
Although, the friend's phone I checked came without memory, because he purchased it earlier, the later release of the phone will come with 128MB of MMC, as explained by Nokia.

Pros of the 9500

The 9500 came with Acrobat Reader in the product's CD, which can be installed on the phone.
Wi-Fi Connection. Though, we currently have no netwrok in Nigeria that supports his feature.
MP3 files as ringtones. Download Mp3 files to your phone and make them as your ringtones. Be unique with your ringtones and let those around you marvel anytime your phone rings.

Pros of the 9300

Smaller in size and weigh only 167g
Faster and more stable than the 9500

Cons of Both 9300 & 9500

No Handwriting Recognition (like Sony Ericsson P910i).
No Touchscreen input (like Sony Ericsson P910i). You will miss this feature especially when browsing the internet.
Display just 62k colours. Some phones are already 256k colours
No Backlight (means you can't type in the dark). This is a thumb-down for Nokia.
No Voice Tag. Means you can't use voice commands
No Vibrating Alert. When in silent mode, the phone better be sitting in front of you or you will miss your calls.

Wish List
Handwriting Recognition / Touchscreen input would have made both phones superb
FM Stereo (Though it is a business phone, it sure won't spoil things). I don't know while I like this FM things in a phone.

Cons of Nokia 9500

Too Slow to run some applications
Too Bulky (some people call it 'brick'). Well, it fits in without a bulge into the front pocket of my jeans trouser, but with the side pocket, it created a noticeable bulge. It is easier and better to carry the communicator with a belt clip.

My Comments:

These two phones are great if you are the type that likes to browse on your mobile phone. Also, if you can't do without having a computer with you, then either of these Communicators is a good choice.

The Nokia 9500 has more features than the 9300, like the Camera, Wi-Fi, VPN Client and Opera Internet Browser. These features cannot be ignored if you are techno-savvy.
However, if you do not need any of the extra features of the 9500, then, the Nokia 9300 will be a better choice, since it is smaller, and lighter.

Java: This enabled you to install and run java applications on mobile phones.

GPRS: For internet browsing on your mobile phone (if your network supports it).

VPN-Client
: If your office network supports it, you can work remotely from home or while on the road.

USB-Connection
: You used this to connect the Multimedia Memory Card on your phone to your PC. The MMC will appear as another disk on your system.

Bluetooth:

Bluetooth will enable you to connect your phone to your PC. This is more than a USB-Connection as you will have access to all features on the phone. With this you can synchrnoise your phone with Microsoft Outlook or browse the internet for free on your phone making your internet-connected PC as the Gateway.

Business / Crude Oil: A Blessing To Nigeria or a Curse? by diakim(m): 9:01am On May 17, 2005
Those days when I was in Primary School, I learnt about mineral resources in this country Nigeria, like Tin and Columbite in Jos, Limestone, Gold in Ilesha, Coals in Enugu, etc, not to mentioned the not too long discovered Bitumen in Ondo State during the reign of Babangida.

I also learnt about Cash or Exports crops like Cocoa in the West, Oil Palm and Rubber Plantation in the East, Groundnut Pyramid of Northern Nigeria, etc. All these crops bring in revenue to the country.

Now, all we are hearing today is crude oil or petroleum. The economy of the nation is now dependent on only one product. Everybody wants to become the President because there is a lot of oil money flowing around. Yet we have other nations in the world that lacked crude oil or any mineral resource at all. Take for instance countries like Japan, China and India that have no oil, yet they have managed to make a lot of economic and scientific progress, which we have not recorded in Nigeria.

The question is, do you think this country would have made more progress if there is no crude oil? Is crude oil a blessing or curse to Nigeria? Lets hear your view.

Difficult to say.

His regime was just too short that people remember him for the reforms he was trying to carry out. Maybe if he had lived longer, he would have turned into another dictator like Abacha. Though, I still know a few people who says they never like him.

Politics / Re: Here they come again by diakim(m): 9:38am On May 16, 2005
Nothing is going to come out of this.

Remember, the samething happened during President Obasanjo's first term, when the then Speaker of the House of Representative, Ghalli Nahba was trying to impeach the President. At the end, they all settled after OBJ has granted them their wish. The President has his own way of settling them. So, there is no cause for alarm.
Music/Radio / Re: Bob Marley: 24th Anniversary of His Death by diakim(m): 9:17am On May 12, 2005
Bob Marley, even though he is dead his music continues to live in our hearts.

I am yet to see any man who sings with so much wisdom as Bob Marley. He is a musical Philosopher, and a Freedom Fighter for the downtroden and the oppresed. It is difficult to find any other Reggae artist that can fit into his shoes.

Undoubtedly, his name has been synonymous with Reggae Music.

Politics / Re: 1,000 Naira Note: Will there be inflation? by diakim(m): 8:13am On May 12, 2005
We already have inflation. Tell me how many things can you purchase now with the N1 coin? Virtually nothing, except Sweets.

The introduction of the N1,000 Note will not cause inflation provided the government did not phase out the N5 and N10 notes. If the government decided to coin the N5 and N10 notes, there will certainly be inflation as the prices of those commodities being sold for less than N20 will definitely be pushed up to meet the N20 mark,as Nigerians generally did not like carrying coins because of the weights.

Apart from that, I can see the Owambe people now spraying N1,000 notes in parties just to let people know that they are rich.

Autos / Re: 4,000 naira fine for use of cellphone while driving as from 1st of July (FRSC) by diakim(m): 8:28am On May 11, 2005
This is a welcomed development as it is difficult to concentrate while driving and making or receiving phone calls at the same time, even when you are using a handsfree or speakerphone. No matter how, your concentration will certainly drop and you cannot observe all that happens on the road or by the sides of the road.

Anybody that drives in Lagos will surely know that you need more than two eyes and two ears to drive safely, what with the recklessness of the Danfo drivers and the ubiquitous Okada riders.

But then, the FRSC should not just go slamming charges on people for various traffic offences. It should follow the due process of the law. Let the country's law makers enact laws on the issue of phoning while driving, and impose appropriate sanctions for erring offenders. Until then, whatever fine or sanctions imposed by the FRSC will be seen as unconstitutional, and anybody that has the will or guts can take them to court.

And lets I forget, apart from phoning, there are other things that can distract your attention while driving, like fiddling with your car stereo, talking with the passenger inside your car, children noises and distraction, reading newspapers while driving in traffic jam ( shocked) and loud music from the car stereo. All these should be looked together when we are considering the issue of safety on the roads.

Lie detector's aren't that advanced they measure the temperature in a bit of the body that heats up when someone is lie (nervous) and study other patterns (voice tone etc)

Unfortantly they're not reliable and tend to call someone a lier if there just nervous.

You are right, man. Thanks for the education.
Politics / Re: Who Should Be the Next President of Nigeria? by diakim(m): 2:29pm On May 09, 2005
If you are reffering to the trio of Atiku, Babangida & Marwa, then I think it is going to be Babangida, except if Obasanjo helps to rig Atiku in.

Babangida has gotten enough men within and outside the government that are ready to make sure that he only not come back, but perpetuate his regime of corruption and mismanagement. He also has the money to buy his way through.

Atiku may not enjoy the support of most Nigerians or even of his fellow PDP men. Be sure that Nigerians are bound to judge Atiku on the sins of Obasanjo's administration.

Marwa is a political neophyte. Though he's got some little money and some pockets of supporters, but he doesn't have the supports or as much politcal machineries as the Maradona himself.

Left to me, I prefer somebody else. A new breed, and not some retired millitary men and politicians who have stolen the wealth of this nation, and now want to hold on to power at all costs.
Politics / Re: Nigerian Police Installing Automated Fingerprinting Machines. Criminals Beware! by diakim(m): 2:02pm On May 09, 2005
It is kind of surprising that The Nigerian Police Force is just ambarking on automated fingerprinting machines at this age when more civilised nations are already using advanced techniques like lie detectors in their forensic laboratories.

And what is the guarantee that if these machines are installed they will not be hampered and grounded due to the dreaded Nigerian factors.

Lets face it, The Nigerian Police Force is many generations behind their counterparts in the western worlds. Our Police Force don't investigate, they only make arrests and prosecute based on circumstantial evidence as already said by Seun. May God deliver us from them.
Fashion / Re: Beauty Pageantry! What's the point? by diakim(m): 1:01pm On May 09, 2005
M-O-N-E-Y. That is the point of those Beauty Pageantry.

The promoters want to make money, the girls also want money and fame. Also the audience want to have fun.

I am afraid to say that Beauty Pagentry has never been parts of African culture. The Americans may be comfortable with it, but not we Africans. This is because anything that tends to promote nudism or quasi-nudism is generally frowned upon in our society.

And I am even more afraid to say that this is just the beginning of these shows of shames. After Agbani Darego won the Miss World (?) contest, Nigerian girls all got interested in these Beauty Competition things. Even parents are not left out. They are the ones now encouraging their daughters to participate in these competitions.

What Nigerians don't know was that Agbani Darego winning the contest was the ploy of the Western worlds to catch Nigerians unaware, who have hitherto remain indifferent to Beauty Competitions.

Lets just pray that in our generation we don't start seeing girls driving in their cars or walking the streets in pants and bras only.

There will always be disagreements or misunderstandings like this. Even in a small family of five or six, there will be occasions for one or two quarrels, not to talk of when we have over a hundred people.

The best thing though, is that we should learn from incidence like this to move the forum forward.
Nairaland / General / Re: White Lies by diakim(m): 2:13pm On May 05, 2005
Well, I don't tell white lies, but diplomatic lies.

Like if I don't want to see a visitor in the office, I will tell the receptionist that I am in a meeting, and so I cannot attend to the visitor.

Or, If there is an external call for me from a pestiferious salesperson, I will tell the operator to inform the caller that I am not around.

So Trish, if these fit into your classification of white lies, then so be it.

Politics / Re: President Obasanjo's third term bid. How possible? by diakim(m): 4:17pm On May 04, 2005
Those promoting the campaigns for OBJ to come back for the third term or extend his tenure beyond 2007 are Obasanjo's own enemies and the enemies of this country, Nigeria.

I think what they are doing is testing the water; to see how the people will take the idea of OBJ's staying beyond 2007, and also to see if they can lure the President himself into accepting such ignoble idea.

These people are political sycophants and never-do-wells who think only of feathering their own nests instead of promoting what will move this great country forward.

Career / Re: Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by diakim(m): 2:25pm On May 03, 2005
I think I know the reasons now from you guys posts, especially as Mamba posted. Allenpowered has raised some serious issues which I think explained the cores of the matter.

The reality of getting out of this situation is still very far, from what Seun has said. As long as the univeristies are not enough to admit the myriads of applicants, students have no choice than to go to the polyytechnics. But the reality of the situation will now stare them in the face later in the future when they want to upgrade themselves in their careers. So much for our educational policies.
Career / Why This Discrimination Between B.Sc & HND? by diakim(m): 10:47am On May 02, 2005
Why these discriminations between B.Sc and HND degrees holders?

This thing has been going on for a long time, that I thought by now our policy makers in this country would have taken steps to correct it. There are some companies that wouldn't employ an HND holder at all, while those that employs put them on a lower rank below their B.Sc counterparts of the same experience.

Recently, a friend of mine wanted to go for an MBA in one the nation's universities, but she was asked to do a Post-Graduate Diploma (PGD) first before she can apply for the MBA, because she is an HND holder.

It takes four years in the Polytechnic to acquire an HND degree, apart from years of work experience in-between. It also takes four years to acquire a B.Sc degree in a Nigerian university, except for Engineering and Medical courses.

The question is, do you think a B.Sc. degree and HND are equal? Do you think they should be treated equally, and why?

Personally I have nothing against editing so far it is aimed at enhancing readability. I know some other forums where it is difficult to make a head or tail out of postings because the poster fails or refuses to follow the rules of grammar.

Cares must be taken though to always preserve the original meaning that the poster intended.
