I feel so happy for people as i read their success stories but very unhappy with myself as i remember my denial twice this year....
First on the 3rd of may and 17th may 2016.

3rd of may.
It was a good looking day for me in the morning, though, i slept in my office because it was closer to the the embassy and i was scheduled for 6;30am appointment.

Got checked in with full boldness in me as i waited for my turn to be interviewed. I was called by the first guy, a short looking guy with frowning face.

Me: Good morning
vo: he didnt ans

vo: pass me your document
me: passed my passport and i20

vo: have u travelled before?
me:no

vo: how many schools did u apply aside florida inter uni
me :3 schools

vo: name them
me: rice uni, tsu and eastern ilinous uni

vo: so y fiu
me: shuttering.... research publicationnnnn! I chose fiu after doing search on the internet, i came across a publication by Prof Evelyn, shutteringggggg on clinical syndrome malnutrition and bla bla on vulnerable people in d society bla bla...

vo: did u do any test
me: yes, i did toefl

vo: what year did u finish your first degree
me:2011

vo: what have u been doing since then?
me: did one compulsory nysc service in zamfara state, (NOW HE WAS STARRING AT ME LIKE SHIT) after which i went to (shutterringgg big time) bla blabla

vo: what you saying doesnt correspond with your ds form, he passed my passport, i20 and a blue sheet.
me: i was amazed! cos i filled d ds form myself!

i went out so ashamed of myself.... i leaned on an officer's table to read what was in the blue paper wen she said: the letter is yours, pls go with it and leave my table.

2nd denial interview .................. that one worst!!!!!!!! God!
I sharply went to get moni to pay for the 2nd interview dated 17th may because i tot i was very close to getting the visa. I went more spiritual this time.
damh! it was worst than the former!

my luck carried me again to the 1st guy that interviwed me the previous time, i tried to run from him but the officer incharge shouted: Mr Man! please go to the vo. Chai! i told meself, mehn, i don enter am today!
it is obvious you didnt fill the first form yourself, you should have gotten in contact with a member of this thread to educate you. it bears fully on me the weight of your actions which translates to damage of credibility. wait till the next admission window and get things right. goodluck.

Spare a silent prayer for him that he passes through POE without scruples and the lord of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob makes the crooked way straight before him.

In other news Air Maroc is somewhat okay they no longer ply the Lagos - Casablanca leg with a 35 yr old plane, I will seek confirmation about the 2nd leg of the flight and post accordingly. Spare a prayer... Thanks

if you don't want to have any issue or story, get a connecting flight ticket going to your school,in case the CBP officer ask you then you present it,after you cross you can now make your way to what ever school you want to attend
bus tickets are the best. Way cheaper.
The ticket i bought cost 32.50 dollars while a flight icket will cost me 97 dollars. I would feel comfortable parting with the earlier than with almost 100 dollars. Also if u have just one box that exceeds the limit its best you speak to the airline staff dey are considerate most times as long as its within the limit.

So your name is bleep abi?

My visa was approved on tuesday.I'm really very sorry for posting this late transcript. While i was celebrating the victory i broke my phone screen.I had to fix it first so i could be able to access nairaland as i didnt even remember my p/w.
The grace of the almighty God was at work in my life that fateful day. I have been following nairaland since february. I started reading from thread6 and when it was time to start my application, there was no need to start asking any questions as i have gained alot.

Fastforward to the day of my interview. I did all the necessary stuffs, biometrics and all. I was on the queue and i heard STEP FORWARD PLS. There was this particular VO that was on a denying streak that day. He didnt waste any time at all and was very quick to say sorry your visa has been denied. He denied the young girl before me even as her mum talked and talked to convince the VO. He beckoned and i stepped forward.

V.O Good Morning

Me Good afternoon sir

V.O Oh! that's true. Good afternoon

V.O Ok now. Just tell me your name, when u finished high school, your plans, where you're going, your course and evrything i need to know
just keep talking.

Me *at this point my confidence level dropped drastically cos i wasnt expecting all those questions at a stretch* My name is bleep.I finished my high school in 2003. I did a year diploma program in computer studies at the computer science dept of OAU. Between 2006-2008 i went to the maritime academy of nigeria for a two year diploma program in nautical science. I embarked on an Industrial training for a year at a shipping company. After the IT i started working with them as a full staff. I Will be going for a Bsc program in computer science at the university of minessota *Mind u, my voice was shaking all thru and i was stuttering. I lost my composure and had already given up*

V.O How long have u been working.

Me Five years as an assistant database administrator *he shook his head and gave me a stern look*

V.O Who's going to pay for your education.

Me My dad. i come tell am wetin my papa dey do.

V.O Congrats. your visa has been approved *at this point i became deaf* i grabbed the white paper and dashed out.

I didnt believe it.it was like a dream.while i was on the BRT i kept checking my bag if it was the blue paper cos i knew there was nothing i said or did that impressed the VO. God just favored me. He didnt ask about the school, course or if i wrote any standardized test(i wrote only TOEFL tho). I thought my age would be a red flag as i'm 29yrs old.

There was a time someone here said nigerians always attribute their success to an invisible being. No vex brother, but some of us here dont trust in our own power. GOD IS REAL.
i surrendered everything to him and i was not put to shame.
WHY NOT TRY GOD

One way.... I go just buy at 370. At least I sppose see 100 dollar buy na or I go just waka...
Fortissimo:
I guess you mean 370. Did you buy a return ticket? I really don't know how that can be a requirement for a student, but na so we see am. It's actually a very straight forward process. You submit copies of your return tickets, visa and datapage of passport, and you apply in writing. Pere. But most banks seem not to have fx available except for some select branches of Ecobank (Bishop Aboyade, VI) and then ofcourse CMB, Stanbic, Citibank and probably StandChart.

cc fizzle, it took 4 days. After I had spent months haggling with, and being pushed around by GTB, Sterling and Eco.

quote author=jatsay001 post=47552422]US Port of Entry Process, Requirements for F1 Visa Students

http://redbus2us.com/us-port-of-entry-process-requirements-for-f1-visa-students/

One of the biggest myths international students, who are entering US for the first time, have is that if they get F1 visa stamped in their home country, they are all set to enter to USA and study…unfortunately, that is not true…recent instance of deportation of F1 students, who failed to convince the CBP officer at Port of Entry (PoE) is just an example. Our goal in this article is to give a very high level overview on the process, what to expect at PoE and list Port of Entry questions that are very common for F1 visa students entering US to pursue higher education.

Before we get started, let’s familiarize ourselves with some basics.

Does Having a Visa Guarantee Admission to USA ?

Not always. In fact, US Visa will only let you travel to port of entry and then seek permission of CBP officer to allow you to enter US. What US Visa will indicate is that a consular officer at US embassy or consulate in other country has determined that you are eligible for entry, that’s it. The final decision vests with CBP officer. Read What is US Visa from US Dept of State website

What is Port of Entry in USA ?

Port of Entry ( PoE) is nothing but the international airport, seaport or the border check point where you would enter America from international border. Sometimes students flying to smaller cities, arrive at a major city airport and then take a domestic flight. In this case, the first major city airport that you land is called the Port of Entry. If you drive from nearby countries like Mexico or Canada, the border check point would be the port of entry…

Who is CBP Officer ? What is their role ?

Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officer is the officer at port of entry, who will check your documents, ask you some questions and ensure that you are properly authorized to enter in US. Their role is to ensure physical and economic security of United States. They have a guiding manual on what to do for the best interests of United States. For students, they would typically check your I-20, school info, etc and make sure you are having all correct documents.

What is Primary Inspection Booth ? What to expect here ?

It is the place, where CBP officer will check and interview anyone arriving to enter US. You usually would queue up in a line and there are a bunch of open booths in front of the line, where you will be directed to enter one of the open booths for interview. The CBP Officer would check your documents like I-20, US Visa, Passport, etc and ask you questions like below ( detail questions will be in posted in other article)

What is your purpose of entering USA
What school you are planning to study
How do you support your education

If the CBP officer is convinced with your answers and your documents seem ok for them, they will stamp your passport indicating your US visa status at entry. Usually this last for anywhere from under 5 minutes to 10 minutes at the maximum. If CBP officer is not convicned or not able to verify something, they will send you for secondary inspection.

What is secondary inspection by CBP officer ? What to expect ?

Secondary inspection is something where student is taken for additional screening. It could be for reasons like they are not able to verify your documents, the CBP officer believes that there is some fraud in documents, they may believe that your intention to arrive in US is different, etc. It is more detailed, where you may be asked questions for an hour or even longer depending on the situation. The whole idea is to verify your details without causing interruption to other passengers who are behind you. There is nothing to worry, if you are taken for secondary inspection, if you are genuine and your intentions are correct.

The CBP officer would check your status in SEVIS. If there are some issues or need more info on program or school, they may check with your School’s Designated School officer (DSO). That’s why it is recommended that you carry the Name, Phone number and emergency phone number of your school’s DSO handy. If for some reason, it is just that your documents cannot be verified, SEVI Fee was not paid or reflecting, etc. the CBP officer may deny you entry or at their discretion issue Form I-515A Notice to Student or Exchange Visitor, which allows you to enter US temporarily for 30 days and you need to report to DSO and get your issues sorted out quickly. Read –FAQs on Form I-515A

What documents to carry as F1 student to make your entry smooth at PoE ?

While below is not a comprehensive list, it gives you general set of documents that you must carry. Make sure you do not put them as part of the check-in luggage. It has to be part of your carry on. No excuses allowed at port of entry that my documents are inside luggage, etc. You will only be allowed to pick up your check-in bags after the interview with CBP officer.

Documents Check list at Port of Entry for F1 Students

Valid Passport with enough validity for study in US
For I-20 Signed by DSO
Admission/ Acceptance letters from school.
I-901 SEVIS Fee Payment receipt
Documents proof for your financial support to cover your education.
Originals of Your Undergrad and other Education Certificates
Copy of your past transcripts that were sent to school.
Name and Contact info of DSO at your school
Address of where you will stay in US
Contact info of seniors or anyone, whom you interacted ( Optional)
Any other documents like GRE, TOEFL score reports ( Optional )

That’s about it folks. It is very important as an international student to be aware of the entry procedure at Port of Entry in US to avoid issues. You do NOT have to be in panic, if you are taken for secondary inspection, just stay calm and always tell the truth. It is your job to be fully aware of your school, your program, and other details of your education in US. Be prepared. We will cover the questions in other article for everyone to be prepared.
