where is lady nwizu, Dr mrs *somebody ezekwesil and okonjo iweala in your list or did you exclude them b/c they are women?, ngozi okonjo iweala was obasanjo's smartest pick during his presidency.
Aaah, no,no, i dont discriminate by sex not at all
Last time i checked akunyili was a woman
yeah i missed out on Okonjo tho she was more of world banks decision not OBJ.
As for Ezekwesili she has some antecedents that make it hard for me to trust her.
Besides under her due process moves, $16billion was mismanaged on the Power project.

i should add the FIRS woman Omoigun, tho i cant recollect who appointed her.

Tornadoz:
Some post here further re-enforce my belief that pessimism amongst Nigerians is second to none in the world. Did any of  those debunking the Merill Lynch report do their own research? (Hell no)
"Uber" economist diggler  would want us to believe that .
Make's you wonder if he read the report before jumping to conclusion.
I bet you the same people trying  to  debunk this finding would be the same that would  ridicule Obama, the Nigeria/Chinese satellite project, our Nuclear ambition etc. To these people, nothing good ever comes out of black people.
Anyway don't believe the report, believe our eminent armchair economist instead. Our numerous Nairaland armchair economist know better than Merill Lynch (even though Merill Lynch are the world's leader in finance management).
lol
"Eminent armchair economist" has a nice ring to it. i'm adopting that title men
ur EAE & family has vested interest in not less than 2 manufacturing concerns in SE Nigeria.
We provide direct employment for 40 Nigerians and indirectly for 100's.
Our competitors are making gazillions importing what we sweat & bleed to manufacture.

We know first hand what lack of Infrastructure and Corruption can do to an SME.

So Tornadoz, if u want to insult me, please go right ahead but do not, i repeat do not question the patriotism or belief in being black of my self and majority of forum members, i bet my ass is blacker than urs.

I am not trying to debunk Merill, all i'm saying is they shouldn't make a big deal out of recycled information. If u read the annual reports of most banks in this country, u'll see the same information.
So maybe its because the white dudes at merill said it abi? (maybe u should take care of the bloody log in ur eye b4 looking for d speck in mine)

Soludo is friggin smart. They should also give him a nobel prize while they are at it. This due foresaw this crisis and recommended some the right moves be made. the Rumour mill has it that Yar'adua is reconsidering the Naira redenomination.

Soludo, Akunyili, Ernest Ndukwe
are the best decisions Obansanjo made in his 8 years as President.

I hope this is not a ploy to whip up sentiments to drive stocks that they’ve already have stake in, to later again dump those stocks at the detriment of our economy and crash our market again. Investors beware!!!!!

diggler:
granted I don't know more than merill lynch, however i find it difficult trusting the judgment of a company that took $8.4billion losses on the sub-prime crises.
Actually $8.4billion losses was for 2007

year to date merill has lost close to $19 billion and has been acquired.
So they have 'motive' to drive up interest in nigerias stock market.

If they are serious, they should join in the effort to find private sector financing for our Infrastructure projects.

"It is also designed to enhance security surveillance" he said.According to him, the fabricated antenna could also be used for soil analysis, climatology and for monitoring earth movement to detect quakes, flooding, storm and natural calamities. The young innovator said that the device was fitted with navigational device, which could help in establishing the location of individuals, mineral deposits and missing persons as well as guide conflict management and rescue missions. Zubairu, however, attributed the shortage of funds to his inability to perfect the projects and urged government and non-governmental organisations to give him a helping hand to facilitate the launching of the project for the benefit of mankind.

"I am financially constrained to complete the project, but I am soliciting for support from government and non-governmental bodies so that my dream of launching Nigeria on the global technological scene can be realised," he said.

The guy left out this devices ability to cook amongst other domestic chores.

Also if he needs government support he should highlight the money laundering and embezzlement capabilities of this device.

Iwu will kiss him if he points out the election riggin, ballot box snatching, stuffing and non tribunal overturning capabilities of this device.

@ Toilet Roll and I-Laugh

there aint no reason for hostilities, plus am guessing u're both in the diaspora. if so i understand ur viewpoint.

if u read my 2nd post properly u would understand where i'm coming from.
[
toilet_Rol:
and westerners, south africans, chinese, lebanese, indians come to the same economy that you, a Nigerian, says is in the garage, opens up the garage, establishes their conglomerates, telecomms, oil, shopping etc,
my post said
diggler:
M
To enlighten u, 90% of the Real Sector of the Nigerian Economy has been stagnant for close to two decades now.
Apart from Oil & Gas, telecoms, real estate & the typical importation/buying & selling, what else is working?

Our textile mills r down?, Our steel sector is dead, we can't even generate enough power to adequately serve a quarter of Lagos
Even the Unilevers of this world r gradually importing their products from Ghana. (they are supposed to be manufacturing them here)

Oh yes, i forgot, our mega banks aint giving no long term loans to the SMEs that need em.
toilet_Rol:
How blind can Nigerians be to their own things?
I guess you would call, Silverbird, Dangote, Choscaris, Elizade, Femi Otedola, Palms, Mike Adenuga (Conoil, Glo, ETB), Folawiyo, Bua group etc etc, Blind to their own things.

These people and the foreigners are investing in the quick returns segments of the economy.
plus some of them got preferential treatment from government.

i_laugh:
he seems to know more than Merrill Lynch.
granted I dont know more than merill lynch, however i find it difficult trusting the judgment of a company that took $8.4billion losses on the sub-prime crises.
Also Our very own Charles Soludo has been saying it since that our macro-economic indicators (thats what merill based their analysis on)is amongst the best in the World.
The same C.C. Soludo (1st class economics, phd by 27 yrs old, CBN governor) also said that macro-economic indicators should not deceive us to the problems on ground like Poor infrastructure, insecurity, Political Instability, corruption. These he said make it hard for small & medium enterprises to grow. (I'm sure they got their data from CBN, Natnl planning commission, Ministry of finance and they r feeling like they did work)

Every great economy in the world, China, Japan, USA etc is built on SMEs.
If orascom (telecoms) & Haliburton(oil & gas) can make money in War torn Iraq, why cant any reasonable business man make money in the same sectors in Nigeria.

Government is responsible for parking the economy in the garage. (November and we still have issues with 2008 budget implementation)
not the private sector.

Finally my parting shots ,
all the growth in the Nigerian economy is fueled by our only export Crude (which sold for $147/bbl a few months back)
Well, now the price don dey reach $50

na pesin wey wear shoe know where e dey pinch am

please tell that to the I-laugh dude

To enlighten u, 90% of the Real Sector of the Nigerian Economy has been stagnant for close to two decades now.
Apart from Oil & Gas, telecoms, real estate & the typical importation/buying & selling, what else is working?

Our textile mills r down?, Our steel sector is dead, we can't even generate enough power to adequately serve a quarter of Lagos
Even the Unilevers of this world r gradually importing their products from the Ghana setup.

Oh yes, i forgot, our mega banks aint giving no long term loans to the SMEs that need em.

All in all the economy is stagnant, they say HE THAT IS DOWN SHOULD NOT BE AFRAID OF FALLING

So i_laugh, do u need further explanation.

If u buy a car and park it in your house, the chances of u have any fender benders is like 1 in 1million

However if u take the car out for a spin everyday and try to see what the real speed limits are, ur chances of crashing increase exponentially.

So the drivers of the Nigerian economy have decided to park it at home and take rides in other economies (swiss, cayman islands, etc)

@ Fyneguy, tell me how e no go safe.
PoliticsRe: Who Is The Best Nigerian Politician Today? by diggler(m): 9:17pm On Nov 15, 2008
My guy maurice Iwu aint no politician

If u check my list, most of the players mentioned were from an Era when politics (tho very dirty) was i would say a bit more
respectable than the current PDP consensus kangaroo show that obtains.

like i said earlier, Gani & Soyinka are Activists not necessarily politicians.

their role is to act as the conscience of the leaders by providing needed criticism that will keep the ruling set on edge.

i would have to retract my statement on Adams based on the fact that he won an election.

i wonder why u did not Add MKO, the closest thing to Barack Obama this country ever had. A man who transcended the politics of ethnicity by winning the fairest election in Nigeria.

The two guys you passed and other posters passed are Activists & not necessarily politicians.
If the question truly is asking for People that know how to play the politics game in the the Nigerian context
then from the above list, only ken nnamani would make it.

In my view Nigerias best politicans include the likes of

Obafemi Awolowo
Saraduana of Sokoto
Shehu Musa Yar'Adua
C.C. Onoh
Nnamdi Azikiwe
Micheal Okpara
Sam Mbakwe

PoliticsWho Or What Are The Nigerian Soldiers In The Niger-delta Dying For? by diggler(op): 10:37am On Nov 15, 2008
An editors question in the vanguard newspaper last week asked the following "IS NIGERIA WORTH DYING FOR?"
Personally, i;ve got two answers to the above question.

Yes: Nigeria is worth dying for, if i die fighting against the injustice, corruption & other ills that are dragging us down the drain. Saro-Wiwa & Co, did just that. Maybe those that died in the civil war too.

No: Nigeria aint worth shedding not even half a drop of blood for; if i am sent to the Delta creeks to fight people who to an extent are with the previous answer.

this 2nd answer raises the main issue
How Many Soldiers have we Lost in the Niger Delta?
The US publishes a list of its casualties to date in Iraq & Afghanistan. Rave of the moment Barack Obama was elected partly because he promised to bring the latter of those wars to an end.

Here our Soldiers are fighting to keep the Oil flowing so that the pot bellied petes in Abuja can pad their offshore accounts.
Every once in a while headlines stating a number of JTF troops killed in the Delta are published

Not matter what anybody thinks, these boys/men are somebody's brother, husband, father, uncle or son. Some of them joined the military because it was either that or the highway robbing the likes of me.

sadPouring some liquor for the boys we lost

God Bless Nigeria.
PoliticsRe: Fg May Consider Reduction Of Petroleum Product Prices by diggler(m): 9:01am On Nov 15, 2008
http://www.vanguardngr.com/content/view/21426/49/

The reason why they are doing that is cos for the first time in months, they are making gains on landed products as opposed to subsidization (losses)
If they were to let the prices remain, It would be a good step forward in yar'adua's so called mission to make NNPC a professional world class oil company.
This is as opposed to the Boiler Room Chop Shop it is today.

However, we all know that the subsidies provide a good avenue for them to siphon funds.

If our govt was sincere, now would be a good time to partially deregulate and let the marketers fix the prices or let the prices be & channel excess funds to our death trap roads. they could also abolish the Road Tax while they are @ it.

For example some of the majors are already selling diesel (which is deregulated) @ N75 depot price and DPK @ N48.50.

However all i've said above is probably wishful thinking so, if they feel like reducing the prices, who am i to stand in the way of a good thing.
