Fuel subsidy removal: Adopting better saving strategies

The removal of fuel subsidy may have scuttled whatever plans some average income earners have for saving this year. Some small scale businesspeople may also feel their expansion arrangements are threatened.

But some finance experts say saving is possible even under a critical economic situation. This, they argue, depends on individuals and the deployment of strategies.

Saving about N5m before the end of the year may seem a tall order for a middle class income earner. Online personal finance section, MSN money, says when you review your finances piece by piece, you may be surprised by how fast things add up.

The MSN money’s report presented below is a guide on how to save substantially this year, even in the face of fuel subsidy removal and its socio-economic consequences.

This year, why not make a New Year’s resolution to meet that goal?

Before you can begin to save, you need to understand what you’re really spending.

“People who don’t know where their money is going are not really able to start saving it effectively,” says Tracy East, the director of outreach with the nonprofit Consumer Education Services.

People tend to underestimate their spending, so East recommends keeping track of where your money is flowing for at least 30 days.

Last year, in the United States, for instance, the average family spent slightly more than $48,000, according to the Bureau of Labour Statistics. Of the largest categories, about one-third went to housing, 15 per cent to transportation and 12 per cent to food.

The figure will obviously be lower in Nigeria, where standard of living is not that high.

And while those major areas are great places to start evaluating, it helps to examine every aspect of your finances if you are serious about saving. The categories below are all fine areas to begin trimming your costs.

Hang up your phone

One easy place to start hunting for savings is your phone service. Leah Ingram, the author of “Suddenly Frugal, How to Live Happier and Healthier for Less,” says for years she had separate home, business and fax land lines. “It’s really unnecessary for this day and age,” she says.

She eventually switched to one land line, and eliminating the two other saved her $1,600 annually. That means that even if you have only one line to eliminate — and many people are able to do this by relying solely on a cellphone — you could still pocket $800 over the year.

East also suggests examining your television habits. If you don’t make use of most channels, look for a smaller cable package. It’s also possible to negotiate prices, particularly in markets with stiff competition. Her husband spent two hours on the phone with their cable provider and got their bill cut by $45 per month — a savings of $540 per year.

Trim your utilities

There are countless ways to save on utilities. Not everyone feels confident enough to tackle a big project like installing an energy-efficient furnace, but even small upgrades, such as installing a programmable thermostat, can promptly earn savings, says Bob Harris, the CEO of WhiteFence. According to Energy Star, a programmable thermostat can save a homeowner up to $180 on utility bills each year.

Even if your new thermostat costs $100 — and there are many available for much less than that — you can make back that investment and save $80 the first year.

Did you watch Channel TV's Sunrise Daily this morning. Chamberlin had to stop Dr. Femi Adebulu when his reactions to questions were becoming too critical of government. Meanwhile, Dr. Shamsideen Usman (Minister for National Planning) was given enough time to express the government's views, even when he dodged some of the questions asked. You won't blame the stations; they need government patronage to survive. Have you forgotten that Next newspaper went under because the government mandated its cronies and all MDAs to shun the paper. Do you think Channels was just repeating the Town Hall meeting in Lagos for free? The station got a lot of money from government to continue to air the debate.

I have said it for over 2 years that government will have to stop subsidizing our fuel for us to move forward as a nation. Every president we have had since IBB knew it but didnt want to face the backlash that would come as a result of it. Also if it had been done when our refineries were working there wouldnt have really been a big price hike. We need to challenge our fellow nigerians to stop be more honest, the vast majority of the transporters who have increased their fares run on diesel (which has not been subsidized for a few years now) even a lot of danfos run on diesel but they will never tell you that. if the fare from ajah to cms was 150 per passenger there is absolutely no reason for it to double, because not all of your fare goes towards petrol, what they are doing is a pure case of profiteering and its only going on because we are letting it. Tomatoes, rice and wheat coming from the north to the south are carried on trailers and trucks running on diesel so their cost hasnt really gone up either. yes i agree that the cost to the individual market women has gone up but not by as much as you would imagine.

On the other hand the Nigerian government is of the view that the massive 1.2 trillion naira subsidy regime is so riddled with corruption that it no longer benefited the sections of society it was meant for.

That begs the question. Is the removal of fuel subsidy an effective or the only method the Nigerian government has at its disposal to tackle corruption?
