I don't think we've got 7000 Megawatts, but I've heard unconfirmed gist that there's 4,500 - 5000 Megawatts. What is quite clear though, is that the WWII equipment we have now can't carry more than about 3,500 Megawatts without a massive convulsion.

No, it isn't different. Construction of the super grid is starting immediately.
It is being built in phases, the deliverable for the first phase is 7000 Megawatts by April next year and 14,000 by 2013.

. . .And by 2020, we go nuclear.
I fear dat one sha! May the nuclear reactor be built in my enemies village. grin
*The construction of what he described as “a super transmission network of 7000 Kilovolts, the procurement and design will commence next year.” This is in acknowledgement of the current weakness in electricity infrastructure, which frustrates the evacuation of electricity from the plants to the homes of Nigerians through the national grid.

The picture is more mixed than people think. Yes, there loads of Nigerian doing well in the UK, educated, doctotrs, lawyers, accountants. Its cost allot of money to get to the US/Europe. I know people who have spent upto £20k just to get papers!

Everytime I go out to nice bar/ restaurant in central London and I use the bathroom, the guy handing me a cloth to dry my hand is a nigerian, or the security guards at the apple store, or at any west end night club.

Sometimes I have to go to Heathrow earlier in the morning, the train is full of nigerian cleaners and porters. This being said I know a nigerian cleaner who saved every penny, put her son through priavte school in naija, and he works as a banker in naija. I know of mechanics who own three houses in magodo. I know of porter saving that every last penny to build that bungalow in enugu. People are struggling whether in Nigeria or US/UK, they all want a better life, or more opportunities.

There tons of  people without papers, everyweek you hear about a nigerian being deported, or caught in a sham marriage.
reminds me of a woman that does our hostel back in uni, she was asking me about fees for international/home students i think she was thinking of getting her youngest child over as a student; then i got to know her other daughters are in private universities in the SW, the eldest guy manages the flat she has built and buses she sent home for transport business- if the kids were asked what they would prefer, her being around or her being able to send money for their fees etc

I swear i have never laughed as much as I just did in my life.  grin  grin  grin  grin  grin  grin This thread is off the hook! kudos to the person who started it.

I remember right after i got married, my husband while cooking, cut himself pretty bad, and me being a typical Nigerian, immediately started saying "sorry sorry"  shocked. He looked at me like i was crazy  shocked and said "why the heck r u apologizing? u didn't cut me! and i told him, well, where i come from, if anybody hurts themselves, we always say "sorry" to them to help ease the pain! He then said, well here in America, we laugh our arses off!  grin so now, even if he is bleeding to death I  grin my butt off and keep my  lipsrsealed
noticed this too, when i say im stressed or tired i get ahhh sorry sorry, so annoying!

I think its psychological- someone saying sorry is like a sympathetic ulterance
whilst laughing your A*** is morel ikely to increase your adrenaline or at least make your laugh too even if you are bleeding your heart out  grin

i found it

http://www.elombah.com/news/node/3912

* 86% of its total revenue was coming from its Federal Statutory Allocation, while 14% of its total revenue came from IGR,

okay, many states in Nigerian get there revenue from the same source, that is why they need to spend it wise rather than put it tin there account or control in the name of Government,

* It is number 33 out of 36 in terms of Federal Revenue Allocation, no doubt

* At least 65% of its total revenue is spent on recurrent expenditure - salaries, administrative expenses etc

This is why they are the state that pay less salary in the whole of Nigeria, N9000 for a level 7 civil servant
elomab is like sarah reporters so

and the other part of your post is even more reason why inviting private funds is necessary, i mean criticizing a state with meagre resource for investing in food processing and agriculture is a bit odd to me, what do you think the governor should invest in?

Tell your friend its a no brainer!! see free food abeg!! s/he has work experience already so getting back into the system wont be hard

Horayce:
Pls do an online mba rather than lose your job. The Mba is not as competitive as it once was, like in the 80/90s when it wasn't as trendy. Right now every one wants to get one. So be wary of the herd mentality,

The market is in tatters like u know, and don't even bet on it picking up in a couple of years cos it wont still be able to deal with the backlog - i.e the pent up demand for jobs from qualified peeps who have been under-employed or unemployed all that time.
To my mind MBAs are for people who r dead sick of their careers, and who probably need a break to recalibrate, procrastinate or explore other career options. Only losers consider doing the mba really,

But hey i'm considering doing one
I dont think you are talking about the Nigerian market, lots of room for expansion untapped territories- 2011 will be an interesting one esp for the banks

why will a smart person be schooling in an educationally inferior nation?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah tell that to all the other countries, since it is your understanding that only a handful of countries offer the best education in the world.

No knowledge is a waste. Besides, I feel that people who studied in Nigeria should feel very insulted by such comments.

I have met people who completed all their studies in Nigeria and they are highly intelligent, even fare better than some who are foreign trained. Geniuses or Knowledge are not determined by a person's Nationality, it is a God given gift.
insulted in what way?

was just wondering why someone will be paying top dollars for being among 'foreign' illiterate or perhaps he just enjoys being the best student amongst people taht can spell wink

I like your last paragraph- knowledge is mainly an individual trait not a national one, and if one is to measure a countrys educational standard, taking the countrys achievement in different fields of life is a very good way to start or just the quality of life available to the 'average' citizens

I hate it when Government lie,

That is the case of kwara state Government, i will add a link on the details of the shonga farm,

But from what i no,

The so called shonga farm is nothin but the saraki property,

Quote
OWNERSHIP STRUCTURE
1. Kwara State Government - 15%
2. New Nigerian Farmers - 40%
3. The Banks (Intercontinental, Guaranty, FinBank, Platinum-Habib and Unity) - 45%

It is correct to some extent, but not in the other hand,

1.Kwara State Government -15%
2. New Nigerian Farmer- 40% this company is registered in 1987 by Dr Olusola saraki and its nothin new, the Governor present the Company as a new company that came to handle the job, yet its for his father,

They used Government resources to acquire it,

3. The Banks (Intercontinental, Guaranty, FinBank, Platinum-Habib and Unity) - 45%
They borrow alot of money with the name of kwara state Government from these banks to run the farm yet state Government own just 15%, so if The governor finish his tenure, they will pay the Government 15% and own the Farm while the debt is on the state,
sorry mate where is your link from, i can provide a link to wiki and saharareporters to discredt any development, if the link is from a former finance director, former investment banker or a former state official, then i will take but you provided a link from? thats basically beer parlour tactics

BTW i havent got a clued what the ownership structure is but i know the banks are heavily involved and the state obviously donated land and infrastructure to make things happen, the state heavily guaranteed many of these investment seeing as the banks wont do farm business without some strong backing---it seems the only thing many people including myself are sceptical about is 'the interest of saraki' in all this seemingly decent investments BUT one thing you can take away is the result, long n short term of these projects, funny thing is you guys are not arguing about the investments per se just concerned like every nigerian about how much they will make from these sweet deals, i mean fashola, tinubu everyone gets accused of the same thing, did donald duke make money from tinapa? did obasanjo make money from transcorp, is tinubu making money from revenue collection in lagos?

What are the alternatives to agricultural investments for kwara? irrespective of who is there as the governor, councillor etc etc tehy will be accused of stealing whether its true or not! its Nigeria after all!!

iyke-d, your colo-mentality has blinded you to the reality of things. nigerian education is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyy better than american education. i attended schools in america and naija and let me tell you, the number of illiterate americans i met in school was baffling. these are adults who went to all the primary and secondary american education yet they couldnt spell well, read well, or do simple basic arithmetic. so i sat down with a few of them to try to find out whats going on. the consensus i got was that the american education system has failed all of them. their education is crap. i went to a boarding school in nigeria. by the time we were in our second year we were all experts in spelling and mathematics. please dont be blinded by your colo-mentality
no wonder we all those silly Ghanaians/S African are rushing our schools, the number of foreign students in Nigeria is said to be in the millions cheesy

My question is
'How does this ceritification affect the life of an ordinary man in the street?'
some companies will be given new contract or expanded contract to supply food for the new airline(s) plying the route, they will employ ordinary man on the street
buy more cows from the locals, train more staff for ticketing and air steward roles

more ordinary men with engineering qualifications will find their way into their maintenance dept and air traffic controller roles

more men with jobs associated with airlines playing this route will have more disposable income and buy from other ordinary men selling food, services and products

etc etc

Ayowumie:
This is my point! The fact a government in Nigeria has established a laudable project does not mean such project will translate into better standard of living for the people. Based on your posts on this topic, what u have failed to understand is application of theories to Nigerian situation does not actually bring expected effect. In Kwara, we can "excess of supply will bring down price". This is a mere theory.

Setting up a dairy farm and obtaining its advantages go beyond mere theoretical speculation of 'good economies for shonga' as some people are saying. THE MAIN QUESTION is" is there a political will to sustain economic importance of this dairy?'
No the fact that a project has been launched doesn't automatically translate into better standard of living BUT what my posts on this topic points to is that it is, as we have seen in the case of many ppp theories is that there is more than one winner in the long run, the expected result in the long run can be achieved if the momentum is kept and the probability of that happening in this case is reasonably high as the ownership/funding structure is skewed in favour of the private companies who will work to get better returns for themselves, the state will generate revenue for as long as the company is in operation, the majority of workers in these companies will not be imported from outside, if the government continue to support these investments there'll be expansion-more tax, more employement and other food or similar companies will be more disposed to working in the state

I dont think the price of food in the state is high anyway and saying the cost of food will be lower is not far off the mark

Is there a political will to sustain the economic importance of these investments? well the elections are round the corner, the private sector own majority share and they will be seeking re-assurance from the prospective governor- just like Tinubu, i'm sure saraki(s) will be guarding his legacy jealously

Harzan, what's the alternative to playing to your strength as an agrarian state with meagre income from FG with abundant fertile land and eager civil servants?
