About N700m has been raked in for the building of a diagnostic hospital in memory of the mother of the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN ), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo in his country home Umueze, Isuanaocha in Aguata local government area. Prof. Soludo stated this on the occasion of the 40 years memorial anniversary of the mother, Mrs Mgbafor Soludo who died in 1968 at the age of 35 years.
The hospital which has four components including a school of specialized nursing, doctors quarters cum hospital/ diagnostic centre block is estimated to cost N9m.
Two buildings, according to Prof, Soludo had already been taken over by individuals who promised to build and donate to the hospital, while some dignitaries who could not donate cash pledge some amount of money to support the project.
The central bank of Nigeria governor said the family decided to honour their mother because while alive she willed every thing she had to make sure that they were where they were in society today. http://allafrica.com/stories/200901020222.html -Vanguard http://www.punchng.com/Article-print2.aspx?theartic=Art20081227363376 |

Gbawe: Soludo , as Nigeria's CBN Governor , has shown he is a blatant elitist not averse to facilitating an unfair environment within which a few can become stupendously wealthy and influential with not much benefit accruing to the State and its average citizens . That is a dangerous and anti-people ideology inimical to the effective leadership of the average man in my opinion . Soludo himself has amassed wealth that is at best 'questionable'. That Soludo is brilliant is not in doubt but I am unconvinced of Soludo's ability to put the common man first. Does he even want to serve them ?
I have always believed that the best leaders , in a democracy , are those with a Socialist 'backbone' who also possess the skills to play the capitalism game effectively . For now, Soludo appears to lack a socialist or pro-people backbone. The desire to amass stupendous wealth while those you serve have nothing is entirely rejected , in action and speech, by those who have gone on to lead the World well. It is no coincidence that some of the World's best leaders are some of its more austere men and women . Even in Nigeria we can see that those who have served Nigerians best , like Jakande, hardly ever retire with a 'pot of Gold'. This might be because wealth never meant much to them . They were always driven by sentiments that did not include a desire to amass great wealth. Meanwhile the leaders that have got us to our sorry State today are all grotesquely wealthy. They believe in stealing wealth meant to develop Nigeria and its people.
A CBN Governor does not build roads,Schools, hospitals and develop infrastructure. A State Governor does those things. Hopefully Soludo's brilliance , if he becomes State Governor , will be deployed to developing Anambra . Hopefully Soludo will build strong institutions instead of strong Oligarchs . Lets hope , for the sake of Anambra, A leopard can change its spots. Totally agree with you But with good people(commissioners and state house) he can achieve a lot for anambra I just have a feeling he will be spending a lot of time fighting off political miscreants in that state too many political heavyweights in that state- just look at the list of people buying nomination tickets those guys apart from looking for pay out for their troubles some will negotiate for one role or the other with their godfather firmly behind them! All in all I see this as a race for the Number One spot! Said it somewhere before Fashola Vs Soludo 2015 |

wales7479: Very soon the hunter will be hunted. I foresee a total collapse in the whole process. CBN, EFCC and Banks. Maybe Sanusi should make CBN a commercial bank and manage it for 1year and lets see the outcome if there won't be BAD LOANS / NON-PERFORMING LOANS.
This would make a good movie and I wonder how the whole script would end. Sanusi please let us have the name of the Writer and Editor, millions thought that same during the recapitalisation some years back there will be bad loans but not at this scale and certainly not to chronice debtors i mean who in the world borrow over 25% of their depositors money to play the stock market short term (add speculators in the real estate and oil marketers) |
Business › Re: More Banks Have 'Large Volumes Of Non-Performing Loans' by DisGuy: 12:24pm On Sep 10, 2009 |
rosepearl: Every bank is guilty of bad loans this is no news, AIG, Northern Rock and others were bailed by their various governments yet no executives were sacked and arrested, GM was given a huge bail out by the american govt and some weeks later gave out bonuses to their executives and i didnt see any body being arrested for that its only in Nigeria that making bad managerial decisions becomes a criminal offence. Sanusi has started with his victimization of execs let him finish it by naming the remaining banks and sacking their execs also thats because those guys didnt lend depositors money to their nannies, friends and their friends company and they didnt lend money to people who are well known as chronic debtors with other banks, those MD lent money to the general public and didnt exceed stipulated amounts for individuals! theres a big difference between bad managerial decision and criminal decisions, what stops the banks from lending as a group to individual ,what stops them from refusing politician and government officials loan |

goggs: @Jarus and the topic poster
Thank you so much for this. I thinks its a good thing that Nigerians get to know how the mind of people occupying sensitive posts work. I have been a critic of Sanusi's actions in the last two months. Believe me that has not changed but reading through his articles has made me respect his person and his intellect.
I am a minority from the North, a non Moslem and I understand and appreciate his view point. It is in tandem with major grass root progressives from the North. What is shocking to me is many people here and elsewhere in Nigeria have this intense dislike for other sections of the country and have been blinded so much that nothing good can come from elsewhere. Interestingly, Sanusi's articles tells us where this is coming from. For some the blunt style of delivering the truth hurts. Well, the more it hurts maybe the closer to the truth Sanusi is.
To me, the most positive thing is that we now know Sanusi; Where he is coming from and his thinking about Nigeria. How many of our leaders have bared their mind thus? Most are middle of the road people bereft of ideology or stand on anything. Which is better? I still have some issues with the way some aspects of this bailout was carried out sha. But I agree to most of his position on Nigeria and the worrying thing about it is that, they see nothing wrong with hating the other parts of the country, their culture, their way of life but they think others are tribalist when they bare their mind |

lonewolf: Listen, as far as I know, the Nigerian constitutions spells out clearly that we are a secular nation. Maintaining this tenet is key to our union. When somebody from up-North attempts to foist his beliefs, no matter how debatable they are, on the larger population, he or she has another thing coming. Sanusi, from his essays, is clearly an individual who, in my view, glorifies Islam, his people, his culture, etc, in a way that is unhealthy for the larger polity. You have to bear in mind he’s a national figure. When you are hoisted onto a national platform, you have to shed any inkling of regionalism. This is not about point of views as you say. I don’t give a rat’s arse about his view on politics, history, sociology or the mating techniques of Australian kangaroos, I just don’t want my bloody CBN Governor expressing such extremist views.
In America there’d be calls going out for his resignation now. How do we know others dont have similar views, seeing as we cant read from them we cant exactly tell if the belief in this secular country, at least some elected officials want biafra in private conversation but wont speak up True, wonder why southern senators/Vanguard couldn't be bothered to dig up some of his controversial views when he was screened earlier this year |

SapeleGuy: For the members of the Sanusi's Supporters Society -
Yes, he writes great prose and has done so for years - big deal. Nigeria has never been short of essay writers, intellectuals or theoretical engineers and never will be. We need people with common sense in positions of power. Sanusi has shown a complete lack of depth and understanding of his supposed forte, that leaves you wondering on what basis he was appointed. The repercussions of sanusi's actions have been like an ill wind that blows no good. He has destroyed confidence in the banking sector and is gradually destroying the economy, there can be no justification for that. Did anyone challenge his views? with all the intellectuals we have i didn't see any rebuttals confidence in teh banking sector? Lmao! |

However, it could still be several years before access to less expensive broadband connections becomes widely available to individual consumers, said Étienne Lafougère, the general manager for submarine network activity for Alcatel-Lucent, which has been contracted to build the majority of the submarine cables in Africa, including those for the East Africa Submarine Cable System and Teams. He said access depended on local Internet service providers updating technology and adding cables to the main system to reach more isolated areas. New York Times |

However, available information indicate that the company might have indulged in short cuts to get the cables down to Nigeria.
A reliable source in Globacom, told NEXT yesterday that, "although the cable has landed here in Nigeria straight from the UK, but the cable has not cut across to the other West African countries (as expected)."
The cable was supposed to have been routed through west coast countries, including Ghana and Senegal among others, but, "the company, because of pressure and high expectation from people and the players involved, had to bring the cable first to Nigeria, then redirect it to Ghana, Senegal and others," the source said. |
