funny enough the story about the almost-40 yr old is true. it came up when i asked for my IV to his wedding, because i know he's old  cheesy cheesy cheesy he's just a friend. i no fit marry am sef.

the only exaggeration is 7 sisters. the rest is true. some families claim tradition as the reason, but it does happen. as i stated earlier, IT ISN'T ABOUT ME. i'm just asking what people would do if they found themselves walking down that road.

some parents don't want to know how old you are. they'll tell u that u don't respect them if you dishonor their wishes and age-long tradition  cheesy you know parents are very good at emotional blackmail  grin grin
No! Mba i still don't believe you have a 40yo friend who is waiting for his 50yo brother to get married before he does!!!

It's not dishonour, you already introduce the guy/girl to them so you are following tradition
And liking him/her means they are cool with it- that's their blessing
Now as adults you can zoom off for your wedding, if they like they can come if not they'll miss
the grooving , Jollof rice, the party dress<---- naaaah that's too much for them to resist trust me

I think its the kids (Adults) allowing thing like these to happen and that's mainly because they still depend on mummy and daddy for many things

I know some families are still insistent on this 'culture' - some igbo families are still particular about it, and i've a Yoruba friend who's close to 40 but insists his almost-50yrs old brother must marry before he does (sounds like a line meant for the thread 'excuses men give not to marry you').

So let's say you're a girl and you've got 7 sisters older than you  cheesy cheesy, but you're the first with a guy who's ready for marriage. your parents agree that they like him, but want you both to wait for all of your elder sisters to get married before you do, because they think it's bad luck for the others (according to tradition). would you wait? if you were the guy, would you agree?

P.S. to all amebos, thread destroyers and gbegboruns on NL, no be me o  tongue tongue tongue! i just want your opinion on the issue  cool cool cool
you don't have to exaggerate before making your point!!! shocked

they want you to both wait? Wait ko wait ni,
are they the ones marrying for me of something
Some families should be made to realise they have no say over other adults
so if they like the guy/girl they cant tell him to wait
what if the girl is already pregnant, will they tell her to hold the baby inside grin

I have no older/younger bro/sis. So what I want goes cool

It does not work this way. Everywhere, poverty and underdevelopment ignites ethnic conflicts while abundance brings peace. You see, all the countries you mentioned before as examples of different ethnicities coexisting peacefully are rich countries. In South Africa, a lot of people live in poverty and while the apartheid experience bonded them enough to prevent fight between them, as soon as other people arrived to compete for resources and jobs, there was violence. It's all about fighting for resources - if the resources like jobs, business opportunities, land are insufficient, people will see every competitor who they do not fully identify with as an enemy.

Corruption is a form of this fight for the limited resources - not everybody loses! The corrupt one, his family, his friends and allies benefit from him stealing the money.

For a country to develop, you must have people contributing to it more than they take from it - at least for some time. People will sacrifice only if they have a reason to be loyal to the country, full identification. If you have them sacrifice long enough, the country gets rich and people can relax, USA and Western Europe achieved this stage. In China, most people sacrifice heavily and work their a**es off for little pay instead of trying to steal or get rich quick by unlawful means. And the country grows quickly. In Nigeria, everyone is selfish and (except in family) is trying to get more than they give. As long as this will last, they won't be any change. And I believe that lack of identification with the country and all its people is the most important reason for this.
Nigeria is also a rich country, mismanagement and bad leadership at all levels by all tribes kept it that way
if  resources are properly managed and the environment is made conducive enough for hard working people to
carry out their business transaction, provide jobs and life comfortably there will be less agitation for mushrooms countries; who in the long run will never develop into significant states or become lab rats for imf policies and aid donors

What are the chances people who normally are selfish and corrupt suddenly become less selfish and more hard-working?
Chances are people will stay put instead of returning to their their villages/states to develop it
just because they now have their own group-they will naturally migrate to where their skills are useful or their their business thrive. people currently identify with their states (mini country) but don't necessarily contribute to it apart from xmas periods.

I really don't believe having individual countries will change anything UNLESS THEY ARE RESTRICTED TO THAT REGION that way they have no where to go to, as it is the corrupt ones will still have have the say when these region are created

hmm investigation upon investigation

http://www.dailytrust.com/content/view/21390/243/
President Umaru Yar’adua has directed the Chief of Defence Staff, Chief Marshall Paul Dike, to investigate last week’s alleged assault on a Lagos resident, Miss Uzoma Okere, by naval ratings attached to Rear Admiral Harry Arogundade. Presidency sources told Sunday Trust yesterday that the president ordered investigations into the matter because he was “very upset” by the alleged brutalisation of Miss Okere by the naval men. Miss Okere was reportedly beaten up and stripped naked by the naval men for allegedly obstructing Admiral Arogundade’s convoy on Victoria Island, Lagos.

Sources said Yar’adua directed that the matter should be investigated immediately while the report should be made available to him at the earliest possible time. The president was said to have vowed that anybody found culpable in the matter would not go unpunished.

According to our sources, the president described the incident as unacceptable and vowed that his administration would not tolerate a situation where some individuals would brutalise their fellow citizens in the name of wielding authority.

Since the inception of the present administration, the emphasis has been on rule of law and order in the society, which the president on a number of occasions had vowed to promote and defend all the time. When contacted on the development, the Special Adviser on communication to the president, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, confirmed that the president had ordered investigations into the matter.

3. Friendly? How friendly are alaaye people that harass igbos and other Nigerians everyday in Lagos island?
other Nigerians will mean everyone basically

Yoruba may be more liberal when it comes to religion and marriage
I think that's enough to say they are the most friendliest then; seeing as trouble mainly start from religious intolerance

If you are liberal with regards to marriage then you are more accepting of other tribes

Politics › Re: Will Nigeria Ever Split Up Into Seperate Nations? by DisGuy: 3:03am On Nov 09, 2008
In South Africa, the experience of apartheid and a common enemy has bonded people from different ethnicities so that they do not see the country as an arena for competition between them (as it is in case of Nigeria). America and Canada are multiethnic because they are immigrant countries and the experience of immigration bonds them. In case of Switzerland, all the different language groups have their own independent countries like France and Germany where their language is the dominant one and therefore they do not feel insecure and in need of competition.
And can't the experience of corruption and underdevelopment bond all tribe seeing as the WHOLE country is underdeveloped, no particular region is without some sort of major issues that is affecting the tribes or inhabitants
of that region. The problem is we are wasting so much energy fighting the wrong fight-tribe and ethnicity is related but
development and corruption is the major issue affecting everyone- if all the states/ethnic group fight for proper laws that will ensure the country is governed like a federation made up of individual states with some level of independence no one is going to be complaining about marginalisation.

if nigeria was to split up do you think we will split up into three-four nations?
after all there are people fighting within states- Kogi, Jos, Benue, ogun and so on
are we going to have 250 nations??

we will wait and see.
if it goes they way i see it, it is going to be another joke of the season.
in a normal situation, the so called experts will mention the sites and allow open criticisms and from there made amends and if possible build on the public opinion but now it has become a secret.
we are waiting.

well this nuclear shizzle is not the average gas or power plant if they decide to keep it classified
i'm not too bothered afterall, 'Elders' and 'Youth leaders' are known to kill themselves knowing full well
the govt has to pay huge compensation for land that has absolutely nothing to do with them-
land that normal is of no use will suddenly be claims as 'our land'

open criticism from who? this is not politics where every nigerian is an expert lets be honest
there are about only 8 nuclear-physicist in nigeria, allowing every Aminu, Kola and Chinedu
to criticize is just distraction and will probably bring fear into the hearts of many illiterates;
the word 'nuclear' alone is dreaded in many developed countries

public opinion-no thanks I don't want rueben Abati's watery jokes. . .

Firstly, you don't know where in the south the sites are, we don't even know where the sites are throughout nigeria, the only word you picked up was that they were 3 in the south,4 in the north  undecided

Do you know where they will be in the south, because to me some igbo state (blaaaaah i know this is where you are going) are south of the river can be called south-eastern state but they are mainly to the south of the river!

it's like a sokoto man complaining there's no seaport in his region  grin

Speaking at the end of the review workshop/expert mission on the Nigerian National Nuclear Power Programme by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Director-General, Nigeria Atomic Energy Agency, Dr. Erepamo Osaisai, explained that the sites were currently undergoing evaluation and characterisation, adding that there was the need to do further work.
this guy sounds like a technocrat not some geopolitical analyst, so you might want to ask him, their reason for choosing the sites or what exactly he meant by 'south'

is Akwa Ibom in the north, south east or west according to this map?
think about it Taraba is in the east

Asked to comment on the specific areas the US could learn from Nigeria, Iwu said the Americans should learn to keep a national voters’ register.

He said that they should also learn to hold presidential election in one day rather than scatter it over several days, as they do in the case of early voting.
just about TWO MONTHS AGO he was saying we adopt staggering of election

Among the lessons learnt from the 2007 elections is the realization that Nigeria may do with staggered elections. As re-run elections and bye-elections have shown in more graphic form, elections are better conducted in smaller zones at a time.
Presentation made by Professor Maurice M.Iwu, Honourable Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (Nigeria) at the 3rd Daily Graphic Governance Dialogue. Accra, Ghana. August 5, 2008

The INEC chairman said that the legal framework for the conduct of elections must change, adding that the rules for electoral contest must be clear and known ahead of time. He said, “For the society to accommodate and often promote glaringly unwholesome values and inclinations in its citizens and social conducts and turn around to expect that its democracy will have a different texture is the worst form of delusion.” Iwu advocated for elections to be staggered, an arrangement that he observed would ensure better focus and optimal application of standards in the conduct of elections.
