Career › Re: What Do I Do With A Degree In English by DisGuy: 4:59pm On Nov 04, 2008
you'll definately make a poor teacher!

carmelily:
Go for a 2nd degree in linguistics then go into IT and work in Computational Linguistics (CL). The IT of Linguistics. That's what I'm doing. 1st degree was English, 2nd was Master's in Linguistics (not easy with an English background, though. Must warn you). Now into CL - speech recognition, Natural Language Processing, machine translation, syntactic parsing etc. Firms like Google will snatch you up if you know your stuff. Just be ready to work hard. Goodluck.
lets see

4-6 years studying English
1-2 years Masters Linguistics- how much does it cost for a masters program?
8-1year- NIIT,APTECH ETC ETC -certainly not free!
then now Search for a job in Computational Linguistics
makes sense doesnt it?
and chances of you getting spotted by google from a pirate backwater like nigeria
is incredibly high  cheesy

So tell us Victor there must be a reason you spent 4-5years studying a course like english
or did someone choose it for you?

Ndipe:
I inquired from my friend who lives in Nigerian about the Rental business, and he told me that it is only profitable if one has the connection. I saw his point, because who among the masses, except for the famous and rich folks would organize an elaborate party that would require an event planner. Nduka Obaigbena, according to my friend who held a bash not too long ago hired event planner(s) from South Africa, so , anybody who has more information on the business should holla.
i'm not too sure you understand this rental business thing, it's different from event planner similar though
you can be an event planner without these equipment and you can be in this business without
being an event planner

I'm sure the guy from south africa didnt bring in chairs, and tables from south africa
elaborate parties are still being organised on streets and community centres
remember everything calls for a celebration in nigeria-even if they have to borrow money!!

i can bet if the north finds oil today they will opt to get out of nigeria. so what do you think?
namun:
@grafikdon,
i am not niger delta but i believe so much in justice, so much. and who screams one nigeria. i don't think anybody but northerners want to still remain as nigeria, even the ibo without oil still want 2 seperate. let the truth be told the north is leeching on resources that odes nto belong to it and that is a parasitic nature.
please let everybody handle its own business at least when dere was the groundnut pyramid in the north, it was not channelled to the south or was ithuhhuh
what about tin in jos
i have not herd someone speak one nigeria. and i don't believe dere is one nigeria. i would prefer if we all go our seperate ways
why are people so obsessed about the north or what they want?
why is everything seen as if if the north don't consent then nothing
its almost as if the senators, house of reps are all northerners

it always weird when people talk as if their own representative are on the same page as they are
and are only beinf held back by the north or perharps their representatives are chosen by the north!!
Properties › Re: How Long To Re-coup Rental Properties by DisGuy: 12:06pm On Nov 04, 2008
ASHLAND:
Asitis, you have tried, but if you look at Nigeria rents as of today, you will notice they doesn't match that your calculation. Nigeria rents are too poor compare to cost of properties .I think tenants need to be educated that they need to pay more.
I dont think you know much about nigeian poperties and income
you cant expect people to pay more than the prevaling rate especially
when facilities provided by the homeowners are just standard and in some cases
below standard even in the 'high brow' areas what with door handles coming off
no furnishing, loud noise doors, dark mouldy walls etec

You also have to realise people are made to pay yearly, usually two years in advance for a start
I think people will be open to a premium if they are allowed to pay monthly (direct bank transfers)
as done everwhere else in the world!!!!

lucabrasi:
are you seriously asking for statisticshuh?i don't blieve this, where dyu live in the uk?
lets start from the metropolitan police, out of two thousand plus metropolitan police in specialised dept or in special ops e.g weapons handling, flying helicopters e.t.c ONLY55 ARE FROM THE MINORITIES

of all chief constables IN THE WHOLE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM,ONLY ONE (KENT CONSTAB)IS BLACK

don't GO TOO FAR JUST GOOLE SECRET POLICEMAN and you ll see the stats where most police people (60% or so)have said that things are worse now for them than several years ago

how many black presenters are on british tv?apart fromlenny henry who is more of a joker making funny faces
how many black soap operas/tv series across all the brit tv?
name up to ten black and minorities anchor man/woman in the whole of brit tv?
how many black mps
how many blacks/ethnic minority in the house of lordsI'm being lazy thats why ill stop here,go check out these few assertions of mine and if thats not enough to convince you then ill get you some links later, don't make the mistake of thinking a typical english man/woman gives a hoot about you because you work/live together, they ll stab u in the back at the first opporunity
did you see both the reublican and democratic candidates falling over themselves in re assuring illegal immigrants of treating them right if they are voted in??compare it to the british crowing on and on about how much immigrants are stealing their jobs,so much that the word"immigrant "is an ugly word people rarely mention, dyu really see any british home office mp saying we need immigrants?or any pm and shadow pm saying so, i don't think so
don't you just love hearing your own voice/.
have you considered the population of the uk with regards to history at all?
with previous report about the police you really think anyone is rushing to be in the police force
you make it seem ethnic minorities are prevented from joining the met
how many black MPs? how many black people in politics?
ethnic minorities arrived in the UK around the 50s and not necessarily to settle don or
assimilate but to work n return home
black lord? talking fraff as usual!! u think say them dey buy am?
there was a report out earlier this year- compared to the ethnic population in the uk
there is a considerable high number of ethnic minorities on tv
black soap operahuh chattin shyte again!!
lenny henry is a comedian not a presenter!

where in the world dont people complain about immigrants anyway, there are easy to blame!!!
which country in the world that has something to protect or plan for
would allow everyone to come in without adding anything to their economy to come in willy nilly
we've had lebanese in nigeria for many years now, how many of them have been elected/selected?
how many of them have their own 'shat' show? cheesy
there's a reason why we are implementng the local contect policy isnt there?
if we are so accommodating why dont we just let them hire even gateman, welders and drivers from poland
even though there are people searching for jobs?
ghana-must-go happened for a reason didnt it?!!!!!

This is just another sorry case of money missing or stolen by these so called top officials. is it only me or our president looks and speaks like a RETARD. These sacked ministers should be investigated promptly and those that have absconded abroad should be repartrated back to face justice. these people get away with murder to the detriment of the average Nigerian No jobs, no education, no security, no power, nothing is working in that country and people are looting day in day out. Imagine pumping that 10 billing into Lagos state only, that will make a huge change. And again how to do spend money to lure in foreign investors? Gordon Brown is in Saudi looking for them to invest in Britain but i don't hear of him spending billions trying to lure or beg Them into investing in Britain. i am sick and tired of these people. and i pray Almighty God will give them the punishment that they duly deserve.
they shouldnt be repatriated, tehy should be arrested and tried there for money-laundering!
i just hope they don't get a chieftaincy title on their return!

isn't it an irony GB is visiting Arab states with their poor human right records, he's even saying
hello to some guatanamo bay veterans there all in his bid to get investment from-bahhhhh

That US-based Igbo techno-genius who devised a way to integrate global networks of personal computers such that they function collectively as a super-computer. Can't think of his name right now though,       Ewagli ?

Chukwumerije Junior, that Harvard-degreed tae-kwando practitioner who earned Nigeria's first ever martial arts bronze medal at the recent Beijing Olympics, despite being hampered in his duels by a number of potentially debilitating injuries.  It matters not that his dad is a loud-mouthed embezzler who helped late Sanni Abacha murder the June 12 1993 election victory of MKO Abiola.

Dora Akinyuli (Spelling ?)  That incredible Amazon warrior woman who headed Nigeria's Food and Drug Administration,  risking her life to save millions of others from the perils of sub-standard and counterfeit pharmaceutical drugs shipped into the country by murderous criminals, who subsequently made two attempts to kill Mrs. Akinyuli for daring to oppose their crime wave.

what a nice move by the president but d fact still remains that he has problems when it comes 2 appointments.aside from all d blames we put on Obasanjo,he had best brains in his cabinet and kudos 2 him 4 that.what i think yar adua should do right now is 4 him to shop 4 intellectuals and put politics behind. The Education minister deserves that treatment because of d unintelligent way he treated the strike previously embarked upon by teachers,
Obj had technocrat in the second term and he probably didnt owe alot
of people favour, he couldn't careless who was well represented or not
as long as they get the job done the problem with this scenario is that
he allowed governors put forward their nominees to represent their state
so no shout of marginalisation

come to think about it , how many technocrats want to work in a corrupt ridden
system like that, where you cant fire all the deadwoods that got through the back door
or through federal character
maybe we might tempt them if we pay them in dollars though cool

"Let the ministry and parastatals prioritize their programmes, by creating efficiency on how to rebuild dead industries, this is a challenge for the ministry to take up, you can make yourself relevant or put yourself in the dustbin." Directing his attention at the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, he said, "Madam Permanent Secretary, if you are able to make this ministry create 100 industries in the next two-three years, you will be the most important Permanent Secretary; if the opening up of jobs and industries is not working, you are supervising a hollow structure. "Achieving success is not by mere aspiration, but by nature, endowment and providence.

It should been 10 billion naira but something looks fishy here - the speed with which the new ministers is talking shows the new guy has no better plan too.
well he is not exactly an expert, he is just supervising the ministry, but lets be honest the minister of commerce whoever that will be should try to provide a conducive environment for local industrialist, SME operator and co first or at the same time he's jetting off to china every other day for some seminar or conference
Travel › Re: Building A Rapid Mass Transit System (Metro-Rail) In Lagos by DisGuy(mod): 8:10pm On Nov 02, 2008
Midas02:
Horus, asking China to help us build a Metro-system is like asking Mugabe to help advance democracy!. It is like asking a man with impaired vision to lead the blind! This is the kind of poorly conceived and ignorant decision making that keeps plaguing our nation with absolutely no end in sight. So let me scream it: CHINA'S METRO SYSTEM AND A RAIL NETWORK IS ITSELF IS A PRODUCT OF CO-OPERATION WITH FOREIGN MULTI-NATIONALS!!!.

Any Government that intends to make serious decisions with regards to Metro-systems should be talking to such multi-nationals as the Bombardier Corporation, Siemens AG, Alstom Corporation, Mitishi MetroWagon Corporation, Veolia Corporation, Kawasaki Heavy industries, Hyundai-Rotem and so on. These are the movers and shakers who built the technology and helped the chinese accomplish their goals. Obasanjo gave the chinese CCCCP company contract for constructing 1400km of standard gauge railway at a whooping cost of $6.2billion, what has come out of it??. China's railway industry is only just modernising and maturing yet and we keep dealing with those two novice nations - China and India!
the thing i like  about 'brilliant write-ups' is that they are usually impractical, sometimes unrealistic and just touch on the basics, if you visit the lagos megacity website, you'll notice all 'your' ideas are right there, it's probably been there since tinubu time

Again, I ask you why aren't these movers and shakers trooping in?
What's this "enterprising ways of financing, funding and advancing the means and aspirations of his/her people" you talk about- that have not been explored?
