NaijaTushboy:There are gifted musicians and gifted singers. The former involves song writing and composition and the later is about delivery. Frank Edwards is bad about being both. It's either the songs are badly written or composed or he sings them wrongly. He came to limelight singing 'Rock Gospel' which is good for his rapsy voice but he now tries pop and even Afrobeat gospel with the same voice and it's a total disaster. Plus the recent songs are poorly composed too. Sinach's and Nathaniel's voices fits with their genre of gospel music. If they try rock it'd be bad. Rock is what Frank Edward should focus on because of his voice. |
NaijaTushboy:Nathaniel Bassey is nobody's peer. It's unfair to compare him to others - his consistency, his vocals, his daring to exploit, his carriage... Nathaniel Bassey ranks extremely high. But Nathaniel Bassey songs are just, well, too mushy and overly religious ( if there's any such thing in gospel music). Sometimes you just want to listen to songs without hell being a central term. Sinach is probably just as good if only remains Sinach and not try to blend. |
NaijaTushboy:Sinach should go back to being Sinach. She has a niche and should stop trying to blend in to fit the Nigerian style of gospel. Not everyone must be Sammy Okposo or Asu Ekiye. She came as 'the different one' and has to stay so to retain her audience. I don't think Frank Edwards can be 'salvaged'. He's lost himself in the noise and to the flamboyance. His kind of music wasn't sustainable anyway since he isn't particularly a gifted singer but just a musician. Almost like the gospel version of D'Banj. Lara George and Nikki Laoye? I don't know; they've remained, well, just that way for over a decade so we've learnt not to expect anything spectacular. ...And music lovers like myself want more. That's where Mercy Chinwo has an edge - her vocals are impeccable and she stretches it without being rapsy. Her lyrics are somewhat different in every song and she blends genres well. Plus she seems to be a polyglot - her command of the Igbo, Ibibio and, partly, Yoruba languages gives her an edge. But that's only because there aren't too many spectacular gospel singers to compare. At some point, we all get tired of the noise and want something easygoing and reflecting which isn't overly sanctimonious; but, sadly, a lot of Nigerian gospel songs are just noise so I avoid them. |
NaijaTushboy:Sinach? Maybe five or six years ago when a Nigerian singing like the Hillsongs of this world was somewhat novel. Sinach in recent times sings like a Cynthia Morgan with autotune. Frank Edwards has released back to back sub-par songs in the last five years. What's there to look forward to? Nikki Laoye? The predictably sleepy Lara George? Who? Their songs are predictably boring and nothing special. |
NaijaTushboy:The reason? Nigerian gospels songs almost have the same predictable lyrics and they go over the top with being sanctimonious. Or you could find the reason in the next paragraph of this reply. LOL. Naira Marley? I have never listened to Naira Marley's "Soapy" even in passing. I'm more into alternative music and ,sometimes, electro-pop if I want groovy songs. You'd find me listening to Jon Bellion, Imagine Dragons, Sia, Anthem Lights, Passenger, Alan Walker, Anne Marie, Billie Eilish and the likes. For Nigerian music, it's Johnny Drille, Nonso Amadi and Bez for me. If fact, the whole of this week I have only listened to Sia's "This Is Acting" and " 1000 Forms Of Fear " albums, along with Alessia Cara songs. Johnny Drille and Jon Bellion especially are confessed Christians with very clean songs which are edifying. My music tastes are very different from those of the average Nigerian young person. ![]() |
Ranchhoddas:Exactly! I'm not particularly fond of gospel songs for some odd reason but Mercy Chinwo's " Bor Ekom " in my native Ibibio language blew me away. She pronounced every word as good as any native speaker of the language. Darn! Still the only churchy song I keep playing for months now. |
Acidosis:Oddly, most Christians are the first to ask questions. It's the reason why Christianity's traditions and doctrines are the most debated and, where necessary, revised. Like paying for indulgence, for example. |
Amuocha:And seemingly you are comfortable with the status quo remaining the same? Do you realize as a Nigerian we have to be 'double honest' and 'double careful' when dealing with foreigners? Do realize the foreign lady you are having friendly chitchats with is half expecting you to ask her for money then dupe her? Do you realize we are walking on eggshells? That should be our main concern. They don't care about our tribes. |
Amuocha:We are a the epicenter of the most focused negative publicity as a country in years and you are concerned with an imaginary "scoreline"? Go on Twitter and other platforms - Nigerians are being attacked and trolled, not Igbo or Yoruba. |
Ibcrown:"...I miss the days when life was simple. And I never tried to follow that rainbow in search of the pot of gold." The Game ft. Chris Brown - "Pot of Gold". Funny how lyrics just connect out of nowhere. |
Brymo is one the best vocalist in Nigeria. Not many can sing like this guy
Actually, Wande Cole is Nigeria's best male vocalist. Next is Darey Art Alade. Even Emmsong, the vocalist on Vector's 2010 smash hit "Kilode", is better than Brymo. |
True. Communication skills especially. It's increasingly difficult to know real medical dyslexics from those who are self-induced. Young people especially can barely write and, consequently, speak articulately. And everyone just overlooks like it's normal. Many young people can barely write letters, articles or reply messages or posts in ways that are mentally-stimulating even on, I dare add, Nairaland. |

jesvic91:First thing I noticed. |
EgaiEtta:I'm in the tech field. But you don't really need to be an android app developer to know how to set up world standard livestreaming at minimised cost. A little idea of networking (IP address configuration et al) and you are good to go. : |
khiaa:What's it with you blacks and always making everything about race? Where in my comment did I mention race? The Radical Left are the ones always opposing Trump for silly reasons. They are the most vile persons on earth. Are you going to pretend you didn't read the FBI report of the profiling of the perpetrators of the shootings in the last few days which revealed the shooters as registered Democrats and Left-leaning? In fact the El Paso shooter was a huge AOC fan - the most radical Leftist politician. Even when Nancy Pelosi tried to put a leash on your radicalism, you all called her racist. Leave the plantation. The Democratic Part doesn't mean well for blacks. |
