KingTom, I explained it here in January, 2024. To clinch appointments and win elections in Akwa Ibom, of the criteria is being very churchy and with antecedence.

Akpabio was an "Elder".

Udom was "Deacon".

A Pastor was a no-brainer and was going to get support. Plus he reportedly was in charge of hosting and lodging fathers of faith for interdenominational mega church conferences since '99 so was one of them.

DissTroy:
You don't want to know! You don't want to know! One of the sins of immediate-past Governor Udom Emmanuel.

Akwa Ibom is a very Christian state, and Christian leaders hold the aces and are very influential. They call them "Fathers of Faith" so whoever has the strongest ties with and to the Church wins elections landslide. That's why all our governors and highest-ranking politicians have "Pastor", " Deacon" and other such titles - even jettisoning their professional titles - when seeking political positions and consolidating on power.

You want to know how many Christian title conferments Godswill Akpabio has from the Methodist Church alone?

Udom built that International Worship Center to pacify the Christian leaders. It was needless since there are already two stadia in the state capital, and the very spacious Ibom Hall dedicated to such things.

Unless, of course, the incumbent Governor democratises access to it to be used for other purposes, it has no economic value. Beautiful? Yes. But pointless. That he completed it doesn't mean he didn't waste relatively scarce resources on it.

I wanted to even ask Diss.troy for the tea, girl has been accusing him of killing his wife, her mother and all other things. He's an occultist, a ritualist etc
I never really liked him because he was a:
1. Stooge Udom anointed, and;
2.He was riding on the coattails of being a clergyman (he pastored and founded a church). I don't trust people who make a public spectacle of their religiosity - it's mostly a cover for something clandestinely bad.

I do know he owns a chain of hotels and when I got an assistant to submit a proposal to one of outlets in the "E" city, I got personal enough to know everyone thought him too shrewd and steeped in machiavellianism. But most business men are cutthroats after all, right?

Never the occult or ritual part though. In fact, being a Pastor and openly Christian/anti-occult was what made him numero uno on the list.

Those with the supposed occult/cult ties were already being screened out as early as 2020 as possible candidates. I can't mention names for obvious reasons, but your guys should mention two names like the fairskinned smooth talker and the slim bald young man from the same Senatorial District.

Right then I realized, 'These people are too lost in themselves to care about anyone else. Completely different from my perspective on life and society.'

Debating societal issues endlessly with such people is akin to forcing a dormant volcano to erupt.

In my opinion, getting a drivers license in Naija is too easy and commuters don’t think about the consequences of poor driving

I was perplexed when i learnt then you could get a drivers license without even showing up for a test if you knew the right people.

Where i live, by the time you spend half a Disst.roy luxury vehicle for your license, you’ll think twice before engaging in any skullduggery
And this further corroborates the point about wealth being relative. Half of #15 million is #7.5 million you'd supposedly spend for a driver's license is more than the annual salary of a Permanent Secretary in Nigeria which is #6.9 million.

But if that Permanent Secretary can afford comfort (I don't know how that's possible with the inflation in 2025) on that salary, she's good.

Wealth is relative, comfort is comfort.

Saladdin:
Exactly, you've brilliantly summed it up. The whole premise of the argument is simple.

—There are items are considered as true luxury by EVERYONE, rich or non-rich.

—However, luxury is very relative and depends on context. What is luxury to one is basic to another.

—Taking Nigeria into context, a "15M Car" is definitely a luxury for most of the population since the citizens can't readily afford it given the poor economic situation.

—A simple search on Jiji shows a 2015 Toyota Corolla to be 14-15M plus. This is a basic car for some, but for the majority of the Nigerian population, it'll be considered a luxury.

Now worldwide, would this particular car be considered a true luxury, the answer is no, but would it be considered a luxury in Nigeria? The answer is a resounding yes.

When something stretches beyond your current financial means or feels like a non-essential indulgence, it becomes a luxury, not necessarily because of the item’s price tag, but because of your economic position at that moment. So I don't get the bragging and pigheadedness. Sheesh!
The more puzzling aspect is seeing some of the guys who clamoured for and benefitted from less than #50K give away on this thread in December 2023 and April(?), 2024 insist #15 million is something they consider cheap.

It sums up the lies for optics so far.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DissTroy(m): 3:53pm On May 20, 2025
Saladdin:
My Oga, while you're right that things are now very costly, DissTroy is also right that most Nigerians do not earn up to 2M monthly. And I agree with him that luxury is contextual. Anything your income cannot afford is a luxury.

Also, Abuja should never be compared to other parts of Nigeria. Prices of cars there are overinflated. Besides do you know how many years some cars spend on the stand before sales?
Even the guy who quoted this post before me cannot cough up #15 million for a car today. He knows it. His many posts hint at it.

I can hide under the guise of tech and startups buoyed by pictures and anecdotes over the years to posture like #15 million wouldn't put a dent in my purse. It's Nairaland so I can pretend, but I won't.

I don't do the regular 9 - 5. A full digital brand creation package of web app dev, SEO and SMO would earn you no less than $1,500. That's over #2 million and in less than a month. And this is on the very low side where you are underpaid. You'd earn more as you bargain.

Still, considering expenses and obligations, #15 million would make me pause and a second pause. My whole persona is about being honest and open.

Yet we have NYSC members and 9 - 5 guys on this thread say #15 million for a car is not a luxury. They can afford it. One what salary/income?

To do what? To impress others? I'd understand if they are influencers who make money seem so easy for the gram.

The good thing is, knowing how this thread works, one slip hinting at their salaries in the future would set the thread on them.

Like they did to Lar-ride after bragging he'd wager a #500,000 b£t the year prior about who'd win the 2023 election.

Live within your means. What I do is demonstrably not a capped income. It can afford me comfort. But only within what I earn.

The girl who earns #60,000 using an iPhone 16 of ~#1.4 million naira which is her 24 months salary roughly should have us raising questions.

We have a long way to go as a society when verifiable income do not match expenditure and we look the other way.

A sales girl earning peanuts using a wig of almost #800,000 and we look the other way.

Proof our politicians are reflections of our societal ideals.

And just below the surface is a front for curious things lurking in the shadows.

It's the reason why when we question the receptionist earning #70,000 how she can afford what she does, society defends her with vague expressions like "Grace is different. Pray for grace."

A Permanent Secretary earning less than #7 million officially has kids abroad in expensive schools paid in foreign currencies and properties all over, and we standardize it? A Permanent Secretary buying a #15 million car today should raise questions.

The same people piling up pages on this thread taking a go at politicians.

I am talking about the president
What are you even on about? We are talking about his salary which is less than #15 million and you can confirm publicly with a few keystrokes typed into Google search bar.

Public office holders obviously fish from outside what is officially paid them and many aren't upright.

Same way you'd find a receptionist earning #40,000 using a phone of #900,000. It still doesn't change what her salary is. And the jury is out on how she makes the money on the side.

There's a reason the term "Living above your means" is a thing.

Well, I'm not surprised. A rich vocabulary stock would make one know synonyms are words or phrases with interchangeable meanings but not everyone is lexically gifted so...

Still, it is low-hanging fruit.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DissTroy(m):
If there's one thing I believe then it's that, while wealth is relative, comfort is general. That's why I'd never brag with money. Not one instance on the internet where I brag about money. I'd only say I am comfortable.

I won't compare myself to a billionaire even though both of us can afford comforts.

I won't go shutting down clubs on a weekend. No. That's a luxury for me because it's expensive. Why burn out #10 million a night? That might be a regular night for the next guy, including maybe one or two on this thread. It's not for you and you know it.

But you working a capped monthly income as a salary earner and you knowing well enough you don't earn up to or more than #2 million monthly are rubbing financial shoulders with and edging the guy on Nairaland who maybe burns #5 million a night at the club? Well reality beckons on you when you log off.

Now you have to watch your words on this thread as you've already postured #15 million is so cheap.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: EPL Chatroom - All Discussions by DissTroy(m):
swiz123:
I think you are confusing luxury (relatively expensive) as a word with “luxury product or item”.

A gold plated water closet is a luxury item of that product line.

A channel bag is a luxury handbag.

An Ashluxe men underwear or other top brands underwear is a luxury underwear of that product line.

To identify them, they are usually highly priced compared to similar products.

A 15 million car is barely an entry level price of that product line as no brand new car cost that amount. For a car to be luxury, they have to be priced highly in that product line. Now ask yourself, can a 15 million car be compared with a Rolls Royce?
Two questions since you live in Nigeria:

1. Can you afford it in 2025 at that amount easily without your purse feeling a dip?

2. You work a regular 9 - 5 and expectedly off to work by now. Do you earn up to or more than #2 million monthly?

If both answers are no, a #15 million car is a luxury for you. That's why expensive gifts are called luxury gifts.

LOL. The same person who called me tech bro the other day.

O yeah. I work hard to earn legally so I know what everyday people earn legally, in this country. That's why I could break down with examples what doctors in private hospitals were earning like I did two weeks ago.

I just know whatever I can't afford without taking a hit to my pocket is a luxury. Because luxury means expensive.

You are being edged on by people earning less than #2 million monthly to believe a #15 million car is so cheap they can afford easily in 2025? Who exactly are we deceiving? These people work regular 9 - 5 jobs and you believe they can afford that amount easily?
