andrewbaba44:You are hyping Marc Gui and implying he deserves more game time just like you hyped Gavi to injury..When he does get injured due to fatigue despite being so young, you'd turn around to curse out at everyone else but yourself like you did two months ago on this thread until I exposed your hypocrisy. |
Inter Miami just signed Luis Suarez. Messi, Alba, Busquets.... The old guard are back. Familiar faces. If wishes were horses, throw Neymar into the mix too. |
Theflint1:My third post today stated Nairaland needs a UI/UX overhaul. It's shit. Minutes ago, I referred to it as 2008-esque. Reddit too has a bad UX though. Even Quora's is better than it. Reddit's UX is always stated as the key reason for its limited user expansion. It has a steeper user learning curve than Nairaland. Heck! Eskimi of old has a better UX than Reddit. -- Nairaland still holds fast to those simple things. It has very good prospects if Séun would take on co-partners and let the team handle the engineering.. But it's never going to compete with Twitter and Facebook for anything else. This Séun too knows so all upgrades are essentially going to keep it a web forum. |
TheFlint1, here's another reason why Nairaland is very bankable: The owner of infoguidenigeria.com used to charge #250,000 for frontpage adverts between 2017 and 2018 when the website was ranked in the top 30 in Nigeria. Nairaland was already top 2 even then, but Séun was charging relative peanuts yet Nairaland had faster indexing and multiple times more traffic. Joseph1832 would confirm I used to do these comparative analyses between 2016 and 2018 with screenshots to back up my claims. Nairaland is very bankable; it's just not well-managed. |
Theflint1:Actually, it is. That's why it gets the traffic it gets for such a 2008-esque website. Asides news aggregation, fast-indexing, and accessibility on multiple devices, Nairaland has no other advantage. The aggregation is why Garba Shehu, a presidential spokesman, said he visits Nairaland nightly. And why many people admit they visit Nairaland. --- But if we go in terms of monetisation, Nairaland is very bankable. Due to fast-indexing and SEO ranking, you can actually start and control a narrative with it. Nairaland is the perfect propaganda tool and it comes with seeming anonymity. A propaganda tool is a treasure box. You know what it means to be the highest-ranked indigenous website in a country of 200 million and 80 million internet users? And the most traffic too after Bet9ja. If Google searches are anything to go by, the first they'd see are what you post on Nairaland for those in Nigeria. An advert on Nairaland would only come second to Google ads if the geolocation is set to Nigeria. Now if it were to run squarely on ads and the posts syndicated on Twitter like it currently is? A startup/website's valuation is an estimation of what money in can make in the future. Based on the criteria above, Nairaland is very bankable. The only reason it isn't yet brings back to Séun. |
Theflint1:See? Now you are changing the scope. I mentioned news aggregation and that only. You skipped that to add an argument about monetising the platforms and content. You're shifting the goalposts. Don't add to what wasn't implied so far. Nobody mentioned monetisation all through until now that you can no longer defend you stance. The point has been made. The floor is free for you to trash Nairaland based on monetisation. That you can enjoy unchallenged. |
Nairaland an hour ago: School Shooting in Prague, Czech Republic. https://www.nairaland.com/7945938/mass-shooting-prague-university-czech Reddit frontpage: Still limited to the topics/subreddits I follow mostly. Twitter trends for people in Nigeria few minutes ago: Screenshot attached. None is really news. --- If I were waiting in a lounge for a meeting, which of the news aggregator platform's homepage really serves me right now in terms of news as in "news" so I can skim through recent newsworthy happenings locally and in other climes? Gentlemen, that's why Nairaland towers above them if you have no time for going into digital rabbitholes. This is why even very busy people tend to scroll through Nairaland to get a pulse of recent happenings in the shortest time possible. Point(s) made. ![]()
|
Theflint1:Twitter is another rabbithole limited to the topics and people you follow. Worse is, if you depend on Trends, it's misleading. I can make my phone pouch dominate Twitter trends for 10 hours if I get 40 guys with 50,000 followers using a designated keyword and tweeting continuously while others pick up on it for impressions. Haven't you seen something as silly as "Otilo" and "Wahala wahala" trend on Twitter? Worse is, it also has geolocation limitation which you can change as you will. On Nairaland, the most newsworthy the gazillion posts are highlighted on the frontpage as it happens the stories develop. I can skim through a diverse range of topics in a very short time then check out boards for more and search out wider internet for more information. Billions of news articles are posted on Facebook daily. Do you get all of it in one place or they are limited to what turns up on your timeline which are in turn determined by people, pages, and your activities? The point is simply news aggregation, not other functinalities. That's the point. How you turned news aggregation to implying I was ranking Nairaland above Twitter on other indices is surprising. |
DissTroy:DîssTróy doesn't deviate from what the point he's making. Attempting to redefine news aggregation to smuggle in your agenda is exactly what it is - an attempt; an effort which wasn't enough. ![]() |
Theflint1:Most of your search isn't for news. When it comes to resources and guides, Reddit beats others, including Twitter. When it comes to news aggregation, Nairaland towers above all. You don't even understand what news aggregation is or what news is to begin with. Reddit is not my thing? Unlike the other guy who uses it for mundane things like sports updates, I use it for career advancement so it's literally my thing as the resources are life-changing/ life-defining. Again, go find out what news aggregation means. When you do, you'd better understand my point. |
Bombblacks:I'd ignore this. My focus on reiterating a point I intend to make is onerous and I wouldn't deviate. ![]() Can you show me the latest news on Sports, Cryptocurrency, Foreign affairs of the day on Nairaland?Simple: Follow those boards/topics on Nairaland like you do on Reddit, and they'd appear on your Followed Boards. Yes, users post content and news about cryptocurrency, football, and scientic discoveries daily on Nairaland. There are sections beyond the sports section. News is essentially reporting as it develops in real-time even. What you're getting on Reddit on the frontage are mostly days-old news with the rabbithole of nested comments. I know as Africans we like to demonize everything which is ours in favour of others, but on news aggregation (in the strictest sense of what news is), Nairaland towers above others. Not forgetting, it towers above Reddit and Facebook for page indexing. Only Twitter outranks it on this. |
Bombblacks:You are still arguing what you know little about. Attached are my account screenshots for Hot and New news on the Reddit front-page. The third is my screenshot for Nairaland Followed Boards. Notice the similarities? The "news" are really nothing more than updates limited to the boards/topics I follow chronologically; with most not being newsworthy or news to begin with. My insistence from the onset is Nairaland is the best news aggregation platform . You are the one redefining and expanding news aggregation to fit your agenda. Reddit homepage is still a limited-scope rabbithole.
|
Bombblacks:This is the aggregation of news you think matches Nairaland? This is a freaking rabbithole for people with too much time on their hands to sieve through. Nairaland sieves through and picks the most newsworthy at the time (or seemingly so) with community feedback to go with it on its homepage. In 90 minutes or less, you've skimmed through recent developments in the world before you go about your day or retire for the night. Reddit homepage is the same as what you see on your Followed Topics on Nairaland. A whole lot of junk before you find gold.
|
Bombblacks:That's the point. If this were Reddit, I'd be getting news on Programming and Startup news only. A limited scope. With Nairaland, you get the whole buffet with varying scopings of the meals. Also, you have to click on the Subreddits to read news on each sector since what you get at notifications with the distraction of going down the rabbithole which is the drawback of Twitter and Facebook. With Nairaland, it's on one page. All you you do is open several tabs, read, then close. No distracting rabbithole. In 90 minutes, you could quickly skim through the developing news and stories in the polity, celebrities, tech, e.t.c. with ease and quoted from the sources. Nairaland still towers above all platforms in this particular regard. Take it from someone who uses these other platforms well enough. Screw it; take it from the comparative analyses so far. |
Bombblacks:No. With Reddit, you have to follow subReditts to get news about each sector. No platform aggregates national and foreign news, and topical developments all in one place like Nairaland. Not Reddit, Quora, Twitter, Facebook or any other forum. If you doubt it, mention just one forum or platform which does this asides Nairaland, Nigerian or foreign. ![]() |
nihilistjnr:If you're comfortable with hypocritical sanctimony, the church is the perfect place to do this with variety and spice. You'd have all kinds. That's where they converge. Just attend mid-week services with magnetic warmth emanating from you. |
Leyqute:I agree. Added under the "nice to have features" which you have to explain in numbers to someone like Séun. But you can limit it to mutual followers like Twitter does. You know, like if we follow each other, we can message each other or something. Or not add it. It's one of the top 3 demanded features over the years regardless. |
joseph1832:Oddly, they do not realize Nairaland going down is Nigeria's loss. For all of its flaws, Nairaland is Nigeria's oldest and richest digital library. 18 years worth of everything Nigeria and Nigerian. The closest is allafrica.com but it's less than 1/5000 of Nairaland. Take Nairaland down and the ChatGPT they so enjoy would return half-baked results on Nigerian issues and topics, for example. |
wman:No, it's not that. With people like Séun, you have to communicate almost in binary - pro or con. That's the way they see things. No gray areas. If you suggest feature X, you have to put numbers on the reason for it. "Nice to have features" wouldn't cut it for him. Zuckerburg is socially awkward too (or was a recluse for most parts) but he knew his flaw so outsourced the human aspect and communication to his partners. The problem with Nairaland is, it's run by a solopreneur on Séun's spectrum and he'd resist change because he's really scared of losing control since it's the one thing he has fully in control as human interactions for him are difficult. If Nairaland were a startup, VCs would flee from it even though it's a potential money-spinner. It's the reason in tech pitch decks, VCs want to see your team and would most likely invest in a startup with 2 or 3 co-founders and a defined founding team so the others can cover for the shortcomings if one of the founders is like Séun or overrule him. Solo founders are at the button pick for this sole reason these days. Anything else would incite a hostile takeover. |
chidekings:There's no other platform where you get aggregation of news all in one place; not in Nigeria or any other clime. Not even Reddit does it well. If you're too busy to surf through Twitter and news websites for unfolding events and news, Nairaland does it for you. Garba Shehu, Buhari's spokesman, admitted yesterday morning that logging on to Nairaland is a nightly routine to get a pulse of the (Nigerian) sociopolity. Like I have always insisted, what we argue, reiterate, state, or counter here (even on this thread) matters. |
Realmrsean:We are. Nairaland is a forum which serves its purpose - fast-loading pages responsive on all devices (even 2008 Java phones), 18-year SEO indexing, and seeming anonymity. There were many fora billed to upstage Nairaland but they couldn't match this. The only features Nairaland needs are: - UI upgrade - On-forum messaging - Trending feature for words and phrases. When Twitter was doing anyhow.. mark introduced threads, it made Elon stand up and put Twitter back on pedestals..No. Elon was already overhauling Twitter for almost 9 months before Threads. Threads was and is still nothing more than a stripped-down 2012 version of Twitter. And it's why it has failed. Most of the features Elon is implementing on Twitter are features he was hinting at 5 years ago if he ever buys Twitter - which he did. Nairaland's SEO ranking CAN'T be matched. It's still the fastest Google-indexing website in Nigeria. Post on Nairaland and your post is reflecting on Google in 3 minutes. You should read "Hooked: How to build habit-forming products" by Nir Eyal then you'd understand why others stand no chance. The addictiveness of these fora aren't coincidences - there's a deliberate art to them others can't match. And that's just one reason. |
chidekings:It was hilarious reading from those having withdrawal symptoms for days on Facebook and Twitter. Turns out those who belittle Nairaland's importance on Twitter and Facebook prior are actually its more ardent users, albeit in seeming anonymous mode. --- Also interesting to read from young people who want Nairaland taken down forever to "teach Séun a lesson". What sort of cruelty would want one to see another young person's legacy fail so badly? |
Nigeria’s AltSchool Africa to receive support from Rwanda’s $30m tech fund https://techcabal.com:443/2023/11/14/altschool-africa-rwanda-innovation-fund/ While the Nigerian government is spending billions on frivolities, the Rwandan government is funding even Nigerian tech startups to expand. Essentially, if and when these startups acquire unicorn status like Facebook did rapidly, the Rwandan government has a stake in all of them. Erm, cue the "What would Peter Obi do differently?" retorts. A government which means well needs little or no propaganda - the people-oriented policies are glaring. |
DissTroy:Three months later. First he did targeted giveaways with media fanfare, then announced an album. DJs, media houses, and others are back to blaring his music. What was all the faux outrage for in the first place? Because it seemed cool to be outraged publicly then. It was trendy. https://www.nairaland.com/7944117/naira-marley-announces-new-album Too easy. Too predictable. Chaotic as we are as a people, we are very predictable. Every topical issue follows the same trajectory: Uproar ➡️ Hot takes ➡️ 'Cruise" ➡️ Next trending issue ↩️ Repeat. We never see anything to the end. We never stay focused. We probably have the shortest attention span ever. Welcome to the Nigerian internet. |
Ellexy:Before a shrine, actually. Before one of the most feared altars in their state. But oaths can walked back. Altars can be appeased. Or so they say. At least that's what a certain governor of a certain SS state was said to have done 3 years into being governor to break-free of his hitherto godfather's hold on him. The godfather who's now a high-ranking member of the government. (I didn't mention names.) |
OkpaNsukkaisBae:True. I spent last night moon-gazing aboard the ISS too. |
Theflint1:Glad everyone is finally analysing the obvious which is usually downplayed by certain persons. Time always reveals these things. Always. |
Yes. Right on time and predictable. Let's cherry-pick intentions and get contextual even when the choice of uploaded picture is obvious. One poster is a saint and the other, the devil's spawn, according to your dictates or jaundice. But what would one expect from people who have continued to explain away every counterproductive action of the government in the last 8 years, and even explained away voter suppression and intimidation in certain quarters during the presidential election on this thread? The point was to point out the hypocrisy and make a valid case to counter future gaslighting. Points made. ![]() |
Freaking hypocrites! No more epistles and Papal lectures about kindness and not kicking a man who's down. No more posturing like some hermit monk in constant communication with everything divine. No more existential questions and questioning the accused's humanity like two days ago. It's playing blind now. You're jaundiced. Right now there's a case to be made for trolling a dead man with his political choices. Another reason I insisted and continue to insist you should let nobody emotionally blackmail you into apologising for a situation they knowingly caused. Next time you try to gaslight those who call out Tinubu's supporters regardless of their fates, the last page and this would serve as a countering reminder of your hypocrisy and selective sanctimony. Two-faced posturers! |
OasisX:Below was your sanctimonious reaction to LiveLongnProspa being castigated for calling out someone who voted Tinubu. 29 hours later, you are mocking a dead man for voting LP. I stated nothing about it yesterday because I knew, soon enough, one of you castigating him would do worse. 29 hours was soon enough. We get the message. OasisX: |
OasisX:Everyone who'd view your post would get the subtle message. The suicide news has been trending for more that 12 hours, and the pictures we have seen are of him in a green shirt in his last video, at merry occasions, and with his mother. Of all those pictures, searching out and using only the one of him voting LP is a message in itself, especially given the context of what transpired on this thread yesterday about trolling with people's misfortune for their political choices, and your partisanship. I get the message. It wasn't subtle enough. It's all good. |
OasisX:The picture of the deceased guy you uploaded is of him with ballot papers clearly showing he voted LP. What subtle message are you trying to pass? |
