DissTroy:About domain parking: It reminds me of the guy who built peterobi.ng in June 2022. Great UI/UX. He never got to add a lot of content to the website and I could tell he was stalling in hopes of negotiating a development or outright sale deal with the Obi team. Unfortunately for him, Obi doesn't give 'shi-shi', so his team built the obidatticampaign.com as an alternative. I checked few minutes ago and the website peterobi.ng is down. He'd have made money off it if it were Atiku though. Just leave the registrar details public and he'd have been contacted. |
Google and a Nigerian man, Chianugo Peter, are engaged in $150 million lawsuit with Mr. Chianugo Peter suing Google for shutting down his website youtubeaudio.com on the premise of copyright. https://techcabal.com/2023/11/15/google-150-million-suit/ While Google would frustrate his efforts with its financial warchest as a deterrent to others, when registering domain names and building websites, as along as you don't intend to impersonate or come off as an affiliate illegally or other such malicious intent, you own your domain. The argument now for and against would be if it is domain parking or a legitimate website. |
izzou:A music taste not given to subparity. Why listen to trash, shit-content music like Shalli-whatever, the recently deceased guys, and Naira Marley when you can soak yourself in the enchanting tunes of Nonso Amadi, Johnny Drille, Tems, Bez, Asa, and Dinachi? Then throw a medley of BNXN and Omah Lay in the mix? |

Amoto94, here's a recent piece written in May this year by Benjamin Dada, one of the top 5 Nigerian tech blogs: "Northern Nigeria tech entrepreneurs want to revamp the startup ecosystem" https://www.benjamindada.com/northern-nigeria-startup-ecosystem/ . It states the same problems highlighted in the more recent Tech Cabal article I posted earlier on, and it also points out only Jos seems to be putting an effort like I posited. - Inadequate skilled persons and seeming unwillingness on all parts to grow human resources, and the extremely few which exist lacking the tenacity of their southern counterparts. I'd like to read up on the Northern startups you alluded are thriving. Just to grow my knowledgebase. There might be hidden gems we don't know about. Might. |
izzou:Exactly! That's why we must push the narratives of our individual states. That's why I push mine and wouldn't trade it for Lagos or Abuja. Nobody can deny me my citizen rights here or tell me to go back home. The lead-up to the 2023 elections should be a wake-up call. If governors can just ensure security, everyone should think of investing at home - real home without the inter-tribal prejudice. |
"Nigerian banker invests $500 million in new Lagos university" https://billionaires.africa/2023/11/10/nigerian-banker-invests-500-million-in-new-lagos-university/ In reality: Herbert Wigwe, Access Bank's CEO, invests $500 billion in build a university in Isiokpo, Rivers State which focuses on tech and emerging technologies, employing and interfacing with Silicon Valley and A-list U.S. universities experts. This is why you must aggressively push your narratives as nobody would do it for you. Even reporting it as Port Harcourt would send signals amongst investors that investments can be viable outside Lagos and Abuja, and Rivers can be one of such places. The Rivers Vanguard who are only reactive on this thread, for example, on the issues of vices would do better jobs pushing narratives like this. Tell your story! Imprint your place on the consciousness of people. Force them to recognise and acknowledge it or even get curious for all the right reasons, slowly but surely. |
Amoto94:I agree. There's a bias when it comes to funding everywhere, even for tech. Except there's a potential 20X post-money. Nigerian commercial banks don't fund tech startups, except daily sales businesses like supermarkets, and fund oil and construction companies. Funding tech startups isn't even on the list. There's a VC funding crunch now. The bubble of 2015 to 2022 in African VC funding has bursted. We'd make do with what we have for now. Still, the challenges aside, VCs and recruiters are business men. They want value for their money. That's why you must push narratives about your state/city/town being viable for tech and tech startups. It's not a coincidence that I push Akwa Ibom narratives on Nairaland, Facebook, Twitter, and the wider internet. It's strategic. I deliberately push our narrative. On the second day of the Akwa Ibom Tech Week (the day I posted about it on this thread) and the day after, the executives of Moniepoint, some other top fintechs, and some of the American software companies took a tour of Uyo from the city of Ikot Ekpene where it held to visit co-working spaces, assess power supply, other facilities like road network and security, and commented on it being peaceful and serene. That sealed it. They found alternatives to Lagos and Abuja. It began with us pushing our narratives aggressively. (You think I don't know I come off as a braggadocio when I constantly push Akwa Ibom narratives on here? I have the presence of mind to self-reflect, but I'm on a mission. ) Push your narrative aggressively. Nobody would do it for you. It's like marketing your skills - do it aggressively but have the skillsets to match it when opportunities come knocking. |
Amoto94:Let's not do whataboutism. I'm not bashing the North. This conversation is an offshoot of an article written by Nigeria's top 3 tech blogs, Tech Cabal. I'm simply expatiating on the salient points it raised; giving contexts for why it is so. |
Amoto94:My point exactly! Abuja is the FCT. I mean techies resident in the North. North like NORTH. See how I mentioned other cities outside Lagos in the South? Startup Sokoto? Sokoto?! Twitter handles? Don't go there.Maybe Jos outside Abuja but it's not thriving. |
Amoto94:"Can't find placement" and talents abound. Let's start with Tech Twitter: How many Northerners resident in the North interact actively in the space? Outside Lagos and Abuja, you'd find sizeable representatives even in Akure, Ibadan, Enugu, Owerri, Uyo, Port Harcourt, and Calabar push narratives about the tech activities in their cities, but almost nothing from the North. Thriving large tech hubs and tech co-working spaces in the North? I can't think of any. But I could name 20 in my city. Pushing narratives is how VCs notice you. Two weeks ago, we had the Akwa Ibom Tech Week. VCs, recruiters, and established coys from within and outside Nigeria came in. In fact, some U.S. software companies came in to conduct interviews for techies during the tech week, and as at last Friday, the interviewees were being employed. You can find evidence here: https://www.facebook.com/694186442/posts/pfbid0WoWBTWjSipr4B8uRWZprzFPaD9HNQKubiDyLidnDyEngiL8hsvnHQQTYvEDbbxgel . Lagos does this. Abuja, same. Port Harcourt hosted the Start-up South recently. Ibadan has a thriving tech ecosystem too. I don't see bodies in the North doing this. And I haven't also mentioned the perception of insecurity (real or imagined) which VCs fear isn't a viable option. |
airsaylongcome:Indians want to emigrate to work as techies and in the health industry. Nigerians want to emigrate to do menial jobs and glorified househelp jobs they call "caregivers", cleaning poop. The Filipinos are still battling the call girl and househelp stigma even though they do diverse work. Nigerians just want money regardless of how degrading it is. We can be more. We should aspire to be more. |
joseph1832:The article and most articles don't specify. It's the geopolitical north as a we know it: NE, NW, and MB. But I do know Jos and Kaduna (capital) try a little to swim against the tide tech-talent-wise, but they almost immediately relocate to Lagos and Abuja so the article is right regardless. |
Investors not keen on funding northern Nigerian startups, new study reveal. https://techcabal.com/2023/10/26/investors-not-keen-on-funding-northern-nigerian-startups-new-study-reveals/ Also from the report, *According to an executive at Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), the biggest challenges facing the tech ecosystem in the north are closely tied to the availability of digital talent and funding." Now that I think of it, I rarely ever stumble on techies from and resident in the north on social media. While Amoto insists the South underrates and stereotypes the North, evidence show it's just what it is. Interesting also that the Tech Cabal writer for this article is a Northern female. |
What's with Nigerians always advising others to learn menial skills before relocating? What's wrong with us aspiring to be more like Indians who have taken over the tech industry where they reside? Higher pay, breaks the seeming glass ceiling, and the attendant social class makes it easier for your immigrant countrymen to be respected. |
Devopsguy:Shockingly, some of the most accomplished (famed) devs and others in the space I know don't even have standard professional portfolios. Probably due to job security or industry name recognition. I mean, Burna Boy, Wizkid, or Davido wouldn't need a VIP tag at the Headies or AMA, right? They are the tags themselves - those with them get instant VIP recognition. But most devs don't have that regional or global name recognition so proofs-of-work like GitHub and standard portfolios come in handy and helps you case, saving the stress of repetitive questions and sending proofs. One or the other. |
As I have always reiterated, fintech in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa is essentially just paytech - paying and receiving money. Fintech is way more than that but investors seeking 10X post-money invest in low-hanging fruits, leaving other diverse subsectors of fintech to struggle or die. Too many paytech startups and it's no wonder they are mostly cooking the books, selling equity and exiting with financial scandals. Support other areas of fintech. There's smart contracts merged with P2P too. |
WhoDeyHause:Sadly, if it's not done by Julius Berger, one can barely vouch for its durability. Almost all roads built by Akpabio as early as 2009/2010 are still very functional with no need for reconstruction. Roads built by Wike would last very long too. In both cases, Julius Berger led the construction of (almost) all. |
BykeLaByke:Three clubs experienced financial issues: Arsenal, Liverpool, Barça. The first had money but had to be prudent with it while building its stadium. It had third-rate titles to show for it. It went on for almost a decade. The second had financial and organisational crises. 7 years in the wilderness. Players got paid regardless. The third could barely even pay players and is still experiencing it but it won the League less than 6 months ago. In the third year of its financial crisis but it's never dropped out of top 3 in its country league in that period. Miraculous, right? Well, certain fans think the coach who achieved this feat is a failure regardless. ![]() |
BykeLaByke:The real point is, what if this current Barça is only as good as Shatar or just slightly above? We lost. Like Liverpool would. Or Man. United. Or Newcastle. You, on the other hand, think we are like Man. City. We are. We'd win and lose, and lose games we should at least draw like the teams in the previous paragraph. That's who we are now until it gets better. Wake up to that reality. |
BykeLaByke:Previous coaches didn't have to churn out results throughout the turmoil of a financial crisis. Previous coaches didn't have an aged player as the No. 9. Previous coaches could pace out when they brought in inexperienced kids from the academy to the first team but Xavi has to do so as matter of necessity. Show me any other club where the bench and team is made up of inexperienced teenagers and aged men? |
BykeLaByke:The point exactly! Xavi is smart and understands the obvious that we can't afford those game-changing players. Heck! Players are taking pay cuts while their counterparts other places are getting pay raises. It goes without saying that our strategy in the last two years has been luring players with expired contracts and shoving diaper-wearing La Masia toddlers to the pitch. Right now Barça would rent out Camp Nou to Olumba Obu for weekly service to raise money. The club has our olayers twerking for a has-been band like the Rollingstones! Real Madrid is buying Bellingham; Man. City, Haaland; and Barça? Have you seen Man. City's bench? Your guess is as good as mine. We are extremely lucky still top 3 despite our struggles and even wining La Liga in the process. |
emoboy4u:In what language and what's the software's scope? |
udatso:You are missing one vital point: We cannot afford the caliber of players for that instant ascendance to the very top, and; In the last two years we've been depending on aged players, and trials and error with La Masia boys. Our current No. 9 would struggle to lead the line-up for Wolves or Westham. Even Pep had options like Eto'o, Zlatan, Henri, Villa... For now we'd make do with what we have and hope the 13-year-olds augment for our lack and mature faster than they should. You know it. I know it. |
BykeLaByke:No, but let's manage our expectations. It'd be a long while before we are back to dominating competitors and trashing teams like we used to do back then. And we no longer have Messi, Xavi, and Iniesta in the line-up who decide competitions on their own. Wake up to that. I have. |
BykeLaByke:Winning the league during a stretched period of financial and organisational crisis against an ultra-rich and formidable arch rival like Madrid the way Xavi did would have been considered a miracle anywhere in the world. We were supposed to have our Liverpool-esque trophy drought spell but Xavi turned the tide in his first full season in charge. We are still nostalgic about the Pep era. It's why just about all of us celebrate Man. City wins and trophies madly like ours. Xavi isn't horrible - Pep is just spectacular. We have to come to terms with that. |
BykeLaByke:No, they don't. Most coaches aren't even great to begin with; and it's even worse for the great players turn coaches because they depended on their own sheer brilliance and ability as players. Xavi is good by any standard. We are still just nostalgic about the Pep era. Even Luis Enrique who won the treble after Pep wasn't deemed good enough for us. It's like Man. United - every coach is always going to remain in Ferguson's shadow, like all post-Pep at Barça would remain in his shadow. We've been alpha-widowed as a club. |
Izu and that girl had a mating dance right in our faces. We all thought it was about Hilda Baci, but as it progressed, it was about sizing and feeling each other out; one testing the other's dominance and the other exerting it till it flat out became a dance - moving in circles and being gentle with the words. You're not fooling anyone here. I saw it. Congratulations. |
BlackhatMentor:Elon Musk made Twitter open source and regretted it instantly. Mark Zuckerberg the code base, did a few finetuning, and released Threads. Even Elon had to file a suit. |
Begin with W3SChools or Freecodecamp. The former has better UI and UX, and better IDE. Mobile-friendly too so you can learn on the go. Download and watch HD tutorial videos from Freecodecamp and Simplilearn YouTube pages. Practice. Watch same tutorials over and over again, and even the web apps to practice. Then take tracked certificate courses to get graded for the same things you have learnt. W3Schools and Freecodecamp again. Coursera courses aren't so updated but take them. Join Twitter/X. Follow a few tech topics - web development, UI/UX... Over the next few months, follow those with helpful tips Get updated regularly. Most importantly, as you learn, connect with folks learning and working in your areas of specialty, virtually and in-person. They abound in your city too. Avoid getting distracted by the endless controversies and hot takes on Twitter and social media as a whole as you connect. Mute them or just read but don't engage. You lose hours daily which you could spend learning arguing with strangers on fleetingly topical issues. You can still learn and live a normal life away from the crazy schedule that is the ALX programme. ALX would leave you no time to earn and pay your bills. |
ChiefOloye:Nigerians have a tendency to anglicise their native languages to feel better about themselves. Kelechi is Kaycee; Temilola is now Temmy; Bassey is now Baci; Akara is beancake. Heck! It's not even a cake as it's just deep-fried bean pudding; but why complicate it when you can just call it "akara"? |
JASONjnr:Ignore the silly OP. There's no such thing as Biafra claims within Akwa Ibom and Cross River has nothing to gain from it. Any man born of a woman should begin Biafra agitations in Akwa Ibom State and he'd be shot dead instantly. We want none of it. We lost too much in the Civil War on both sides - the Nigerian side due to our proximity and aligning with those who spearheaded the War, and our Igbo relatives who sort to exploit the situation to our detriment. If there's any such cessation quest, it'd be called Ibom Nation comprising Akwa Ibom and a large part of Cross River. But none in the foreseeable future. |
