That's it. Your granny that gave birth to your pop/mom. Where are your immediate parents? So, as old as she is, you think she can support you all through 4 years? Could she be working at her age? Grandma not even grandpa.

Logically, you mean she is the one supporting your whole family even your uncles and aunties and if it happens that something wrong with her while you are far away, then you'll be stranded.
I think any body can sponsor you. It doesn't matter if na Granny or grandpa. We have seen cases where in-laws sponsor people and they got their visas.

Something else could have triggered the denial. I am still among those people who believe applying for Visa lottery makes you an intending immigrant, and can ruin your chances for and F-1 any day. If you're lucky, the VO may not see that while interviewing you but if he does, that is good enough to deny you

^^^ Devil at work - full time! I pray they solve the issue quick and get back to you with your visa.

@brain,

Sure he can go with that and his reason. There was a guy here with similar issue - lost certificate issue and got his visa.

@all, why is that the waec cert call for more scrutinizing? Is that the number of fake presented is increasing on daily basis?
Personally, I think WAEC don loose their glory. My certificate looks fake when you look at it! My picture don almost clean finish from the certificate. I'm sure the embassy guys see things like these daily that is why they now check very well. Come to think of it, WAEC with its big name can not produce a certificate that will stand the test of time.

I dey shame for WAEC. Until they get their acts together, the certs they issue will continue to draw enough scrutiny from everyone.

Please house I need help here though am new on this tread. I need to know how I can get my waec certificate from the American embassy. They say my weac is fake while its not. I did the interview on the 16th at Abuja and I have not gotten a reply from them. Meanwhile they took my i20 ds160 and my gtbank receipt too and return my passport to me and said that they will get in touch with me. I have mailed them still no reply till today from them. What should I do now?
That is why when people suggest you go with WAEC scratch cards you do as they suggested. IF you had gone with that you would have been able to argue and make them verify the WAEC result instantly.

My WAEC result looks fake too. And the guy questioned me about it and I told him that is how I was given. He spent about 5 mins checking it from all angles with a microscope to make sure it was real

My advice is pray that everything goes in your favor. And for others learn from this and always go with a WAEC scratch card

@Nethacker, Aroy1, djunit1 etc: You guys are acting funny. Number one, this thread was never set up to establish if Yankee is easy or tough but to get student visa in Nigeria, plain and simple. Number two, the reason why folks here will not listen to you is because you are still there. Why not COME BACK to Nigeria and then your advice will be more believable?

I have a friend who came back from London saying 'london is tough, london is tough'. Two years later, he is happily married with a kid and just moved to his own house (duplex) in Lagos. The only advice he gives to young people is 'you can make it here in Nigeria, FORGET TRAVEL'. Do you know why people listen to him? Because he CAME BACK here to Nigeria. Abeg, like imperioux said 'Life is a battle field but we still pray to live long in it'.

Right now, you guys have no RIGHT to post that advice until you are BACK here in Nigeria. Okay?

N.B: I have not said Yankee is easy. If you watch the News, you should know about the US Economic Recession, Debt Debacle etc.
Any small thing "come back to Nigeria"!!!!!! Una know whether I get money for flight? Do you know if I'm almost done with my studies? Abeg stop sayin that thing

just adding to what the elders of this thread have said, When they say come prepped! They mean it the way it sounds. I dey talk am again with my mouth come prepared people!

I have seen people who came with nothing and they are still alive today but after a year or more here they are still struggling like they were struggling on the first day

If you come prepared it will make things easier for you. And in a short time you go dey used to the system. To think you have survived in Hell (Naija) and can survive here is a joke. Naija and here have nothing in common!

There are so many things I can get in Naija through family for free . Not here ooooooh! Nothing is free where I live! Rent dey increase every day! Wetin families take dey pay rent for a year in naija is what you pay here for a month! To make matters worse no jobs anywhere, If you manage see one job them fit tell you say na Citizen them dey look for!

I believe this would give you a little idea of what to expect.

@davidylan: I have no clue where u get your silly information about community colleges being only for poor people. Most people in the United States do attend a community college for 2 years (associates degree) and then transfer to a university for another 2 years to obtain their bachelors degree.
Most people choose community colleges because it saves them alot of money for the first 2 years before they have to transfer to a university for a bachelors degree. What Davidylan doesn't understand is that regardless if you started at a community college or a 4 year university, everyone ends up with the same bachelors degree (That's if you transfer from a junior college to a university which most people do unless for some reason, they decide to drop out of school)
Another thing David didn't point out to you guys is that almost 80% of american nurses only have an associates degree and NOT a bachelors degree. U know where these nurses got their degrees from david?? u got it, COMMUNITY COLLEGES.

I'm a product of a community college. I saved atleast $20,000 going to a junior college for 2 years before transferring to a university.
True Community college is not a sure denial but the chances are very very slim. Emphasis on the slim. Whether we like it or not this country is only after the money students are going to put in the economy so, when they see that your fee is not very valuable they are kind of skeptical

The fact that they have so many of their own poor citizens in community colleges is why they dont want foreigners to come join the trend.

Things like these do not need to be argued about because it is just common sense!

1) If this thread is about getting US F1 visa, who do you think is giving reloaded pragmatic advice between you and me? I am sorry to say this, but do you really see farther than your eyes? I did tell the students to improve on their English. You did not. I like intelligent discussions and here are my facts.

1) The student is a student of broadcasting, a field related to journalism. So you believe bad command of English is OK for such a student?

2) The student is going to a country that has a mandatory law that all intl students must firstly be certified in her language, English, before being approved the F-1 visa. So is he/she qualified based on this law?

3) Consular: "Why didn't yo do TOEFL?"
F-1 applicant: My school waive it when they see I has a good understanding of English.

Airplanes fly, cars move, etc., because some people believe in perfection. I do not think that USbound should be different.

@All please lets stop saying English is not our language. That is what I was raised with. If you were not raised with it blame the people that raised you. Real learners draw inspiration from criticism. just saying. I am not referring to anyone

1) Saying "I has", not knowing the correct spelling of "clue", using present tense where you should have used past, and your composition in general, is a clear indication that the school made a mistake in waiving TOEFL for you. If you make it obvious in front of the VO, then you got a problem.

2) Just to be safe, since you have a lot of time before going for your interview, why can't you write TOEFL?

3) I think you should schedule your interview a little later.

4) You have to improve your English before going for your interview.
I have never agreed with Aroy but in this case he is more than right! If you tell the guy interviewing you that TOEFL was waved for you with the way you wrote that question na denial!

My TOEFL was waved because after about three months of emails back and forth between my school admissions' office and I, they decided I didn't need it. That is exactly what I told the VO.

If you can not present a good case why yours was waved, na trouble you dey ooooooh!

I paid my Sevis Fee in Ecobank Western Union Seme Border yesterday and i was given a tracking no(MTCN). Although i was told by folks it is faster, that i would get my confirmation instantly but am tracking on western union since yesterday the system did not recognize the MTCN.
I decided to go on Western Union Global Payment Solutions>>Quick Pay website but could not find anywhere to track my payment/transaction
Simply stated i could not track with the MTCN i was given at the counter

Plz house anyone who has paid through Western Union, Seme should let me know how to resolve this issue, as i have limited before my interview
Not all transactions track on western union site. I would advise you to give it like 3 to 5 business days then check your Sevis number to see if it has been paid for.

No its not, just go there with "favor".

Oracle is a software not a foundational subject.
FYI, I applied to only one school and so did many others on this thread that got their Visa. Just so you know, I have never advised anyone not to be prepared. I prepared wella! It took me 7 months to put everything together.

What I dont agree with is condemning people because they were not given Visas. I say again F1 is not just based on your brain. If they were concerned about that they wont just have you come there and interview for 4mins and give you Visa. I can never agree 4 mins is enough time to test one's ability.

If you are not favored you are doomed whether you be efiko or not. All these people talkin nonsense about how smart you have to be. You have not sat down with people who got F1s that is why you have that believe.

Have you ever heard the story that someone went for an F1 and the discussion with the VO was about his village cos the VO has a friend from there? That is what you call favor. Get this into your head, if you are not favored by GOD you are doomed!

Congrats Cutegirly. Welcome to Obamaland.

@Adolite, sorry about that. That's pathetic.
I feel the woman got u from the first question. She just used the silly FORTRAN question as a veil to deny u. You answered the question by letting her know how good the school is (which is fine), but u did not link it to Nigeria in any way. Please house, don't ever miss any opportunity to link yourself back home. If u like get lost when get to Yankee, but link yourself back to Naija in most of the questions.
On the Fortran question, always remember that u are going to study. You want to become a student which means u have not mastered everything. U can easily let her know that, one of the reasons u are going for further knowledge is to have answers to this question and many more and use the knowledge to help Nigeria in combating the cyber crime in the banking sector. Even professors will still check books to confirm one or two things. Always remember u are not a human encyclopedia. You can never have answers to their questions because their is no area of study, but u have to be smart in answering it.
If u have taken your time to read all the post here, there was a guy they ask square root of maybe 69 or something (I cant remember the exact question). He said he cant answer now but if given time to study he will surely answer it. They gave him his visa
My point exactly! Forget how smart some people sound in their interview. I will always say not every experience here is true because some people lie! Let us all just try to be sincere with ourselves.

You will not be as confident as you are when you get there just try your best to raise your confidence and answer to the best of your knowledge. Do not say what you are not sure of.

BTW, That was me, The question was, define statistics I was confused, and could have given him my English definition but I chose not to because I wasn't sure of that definition so I told him I didn't know it now but if given the time to study I will answer it.

The questions he was asked are fundamental. I think the way those people do it so to initially ask the rudimentary questions. If you prove yourself, then they move on to higher grounds.

By the way, how is life in New York City?

So many courses you can name depending on your level of studies. But for an undergraduate, some could be:

Introductory Software Engineering
Introduction to Computing
Mathematics for Computing
Introduction to Object-Oriented Programming
Systems Analysis & Design

I am sorry to tell you that you denied yourself the visa based on your replies. You did not show that you are a real prospective computing professional.

1) Specialising in Informational technology is meaningless. Computer Science (and synonymously referred to atimes as Information Technology) is broad and some of its specialised areas are: Artificial Intelligence, Theory of Computations, Database Management, Networking & Information Theory, Software Engineering (which embeds Programming), and a host of many subfields.

2) Fortran, are you kidding mehuh? That language is gradually being fazed out in modern computing. It's like being asked that which languages do you think will be advantageous  to know in today's human world, and you say: Yoruba. What happens to English, Spanish, French, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, etc. Talking in Computing Jargons, Java, C++, HTML & PHP, and many others relevant in today's world would have been better.

3) By the way, FORTRAN stands for Formula Translation and is a language used in Specialised Scientific Researches.

Finally getting a visa with a course of study in Computer Science, or any of its fields, should be easy provided you are brilliant and know what you are talking about. I did by presenting a virgin passport and making a mistake of telling the VO that I might not be coming back.
Well Said but I can bet my last $ that the lady that interviewed this guy does not know any of these. Lets be honest with ourselves here. These interviewers only have ideas of what they ask us because they have internet in front of them and they dont have time to go through all the results that come out when they ask questions. They just want to make sure you have an idea of what they asked.

What I am trying to say is, not everyone is intelligent, I am not one of the intelligent ones but I can stand my ground in an interview and if I have no idea of something I will tell you straight.

My advice to any body any day going for that interview is if you can stand your ground in English language and  read this thread thoroughly you wont have a problem. I had no idea what to say when I was asked the first question but I told the guy something which no body in that hall expected me to say.

I am not telling you not to make efforts to pay your Sevis. It depends on the consular sometimes. If your interview is so near and you have paid and you are asked, tell them the fees can not be paid from Nigeria and you are planning to go to one of the border countries to pay it but since your interview was so close you had to come for the interview first. The people who got their visas without paying Sevis knew nothing about Sevis and they are not on this thread.

I believe Luck too matters but I dont think a consular would deny you because you haven't paid Sevis

If consular ask you where you go stay can't you just say your school? I'm not aware schools give proof that you are going to be staying on the campus. When you are done with your interview then worry about where you go stay. But if they ask tell them you have accommodation in sschool.
