On the flipside, I'm curious to know if the bridegroom was in the wrong from a legal standpoint. If he made some payment to the dealer to use the car for a wedding, then his agreement really is with the dealer while the dealer may in turn have another agreement with the car owner to sell the car. Both agreement are independent and if the car owner have any issue with how the car has been used, then this should be a matter to be taken up with the dealer, provided for instance the car has not been reported stolen. I guess the car owner might have pondered on this (after the initial naija style knee jerk reaction of "call in the boys to scatter ground" ) hence his decision to leave the car behind and take up issues with the dealer (I pity the dealer though). |

Siena: Not my current car, but cars I've owned and built in the past have been head-turners and show-stoppers. A couple were actually magazine featured, so were quite well known. People taking pictures of my cars, or wanting me to take pictures of them, while they posed with my cars does give me a sense of achievement.
Right now, my BMW doesn't turn heads, my S8 goes unnoticed, untill I punch the gas pedal to the floow. Then there's no doubting the supremacy of the 4,2 V8 motor. The vehicle I'm building now will be a head-turner, and show-stopper, once she's completed. I like cars that have the performance to go with the looks. I'm not into all "show-and-no-go" cars, with nasty bolt-on bits - Lexus-style lights, stupidly-loud exhausts, stupidly-loud audio systems, over-sized wheels, blacked-out windows, stickers etc. All things that make a slow car even slower.
If anything, assuming I could only choose one theme, it would be outright power. Nothing better than having a car that looks scruffy, or standard, but packs a massive punch from a potent power-plant under the hood. A real street-sleeper. Dare I say you are a speed freak! - or "Speedy Gonzalez". |

jakaiso: Deevelopment and progress anywhere in the world depends primarily on leadership and the ability of that leader to build a team of dedicated people around him and then carry the populace along. What you are refering to is Operation Sweep when Buba Marwa was military administrator of Lagos under Abacha. Its not that, there were not armed robbers and military adminstrators before Marwa-there were-but Marwa brought a differenct style to goverment: it was simple-do the job you were sent to do. Maybe his stint as Nigerian Military attachee with the Nigerian Embassy in the USA-and the exposure to US life made him different.
I remember going to night vigil in 1996-in Ojodu. We passed a group of the Operation Sweep at the corner of Sabo and Berger road in Sabo-it was about 10.30pm -On our way back in the morning around 5.30a.m. they were still there: resolute and on guard.I was impressed.
During that time as well, without fail-an Operation sweep van would patrol our estate (Morgan Esate) EVERY NIGHT.
CNN even did a special on them once focusing on the dramatic reduction in armed robbery and home invasion and the difference and professionalism with which these policemen and soldiers under Operation Sweep operated compared to the general reputation of the Nigerian police.
Note: Rapid Response came after 1999 You're correct, the team was named Operation Sweep rather than RRS as I indicated. To me this is largely a mind game. Robbers, no matter how well armed and determined will think twice before embarking on an operation if they know there is an equally capable, highly motivated and well equipped team likely to come after them. They will rather go for the easy pickings in less secured states.I still can't see why this is so hard to implement though I admit I may be a bit optimistic. Get the best of the best from our armed forces, get funding from all possible sources, bring in specialists to train them or send them on training to countries with similar experience in crimefighting, establish state-of-the-art zonal command and deployment centers, give the team flak jackets, night vision equipment, high calibre firepower, bullet proof, RPG-resistant mobility etc. i tell you the mere sight of such team when they deploy or get scrambled on operations will send shivers down the spine of the average armed robber. Get media to give the team some publicity and send a strong message out there that the team is ever ready (and within minutes) to get to a robbery incident site).
Cmon, governors singlehandedly divert billions for their private use. The security vote of most governors alone is sufficient to jumpstart the creation of such a team. Nah, I'm just talking the talk, it must not be as easy as I'm making it to be otherwise someone would have done something about this long time ago. |

I'm trying to understand why the States (Lagos/Ogun for instance) can't have a joint squad of specially trained, highly motivated squad (SWAT styled). Assemble a team of like 200 of these guys and give them the best ammo, hi-tech comm and surveillance gizmos, training, excellent remuneration (paid holidays, life insurance, free healthcare etc) and have them ready to scramble to anywhere within a 50-km radius in Lagos/Ogun within 20 minutes. I'm sure there must be a budget somewhere to train and sustain such a team. Banks for instance would gladly contribute to fund this considering the amount they lose to armed robbery incidents yearly. Someone pls educate me why this won't work. I could remember the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) during the Abacha days and they significantly reduced armed robbery in Lagos then. Is this not doable again? these robbers don dey get too brave. |

Immigration officers 'tried to sneak Nigerian nanny into Britain with false visa application so they could employ her for just £300 a month'
Natasha Vukic, 36, tried to bring nanny to UK as 'cheap labour', jury hears She allegedly hatched plan while working for UK Border Agency in Nigeria Vukic's partner James Mooney, 33, also denies immigration charge Mooney worked for the Foreign Office in Lagos, court told Couple 'planned to make nanny work 11 hours a day, five days a week'
An immigration officer faked a visa application in an attempt to bring a Nigerian nanny to Britain to work for only £300 a month, a court heard today.
Natasha Vukic, who was working for the UK Border Agency (UKBA) in Nigeria, tried to bring housekeeper Rose Inah back to the UK with her as 'cheap labour', jurors were told.
Vukic, 36, and her partner James Mooney, 33, wrongly claimed that Ms Inah had been working for them in Nigeria for a year to ensure that she would qualify for a visa, it is alleged. On trial: Immigration officer Natasha Vukic is accused of faking a visa application in an attempt to bring a Nigerian nanny to Britain to work as 'cheap labour' Accused: Ms Vukic's partner, James Mooney, who worked for the Foreign Office in Lagos, also denies assisting unlawful immigration
On trial: Immigration officer Natasha Vukic (left) and her partner James Mooney (right) are accused of faking a visa application in an attempt to bring a Nigerian nanny to Britain to work as 'cheap labour'
In reality, they had only employed the woman for six months, Inner London Crown Court was told.
Vukic and Mooney, who had also worked as an immigration officer but later took up a management position with the Foreign Office in Lagos, both deny a count of assisting unlawful immigration.
They are alleged to have faked Ms Inah's documents so they could bring her to their home in Coulsdon, south London, where she would have worked 11 hours a day, five days a week, looking after their three year-old son for just £300 a month.
Prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones told the jury: 'The motive is one of greed. Had they succeeded, had Rose come to the UK for a period of a year, she would have worked for what can only be described as a pittance.'
Vukic and Mooney are alleged to have hatched the plan in May 2011 at a secure compound where government staff were posted.
Miss Karmy-Jones said: 'Their role in this offence is all the more culpable and serious because of what they do, for Natasha Vukic and James Mooney have both considered and approved and refused the applications made by others.
'They have, in effect, stood in judgement over others for the very same offence they have now committed.'
Outlining the allegation, Miss Karmy-Jones said: 'Sometime in the spring of 2011 Natasha Vukic and James Mooney decided to return to the UK.
'Natasha Vukic had obtained a transfer back to the UK. She was due to take up a post in the UKBA’s Criminal and Financial Investigations Unit, based in Croydon.
'She planned to take her young son with her. No doubt on her mind was childcare, and specifically the cost of childcare in London was something that she and James Mooney had to consider.'
The prosecutor added: 'They hit upon a plan that their Nigerian nanny and maid Rose would be the ideal candidate to continue to look after their son when Natasha worked in London.'
Vukic was then said to have filled out a visa application form on their maid’s behalf.
Mooney allegedly submitted the form on May 25 last year, together with a copy of the maid’s contract claiming she had been working for the couple since May 10, 2010.
However, Miss Karmy-Jones told jurors that Ms Inah had only been working for the couple since November 2010 - six months less than they had written on her visa application.
She added: 'In submitting that form, as they did, Natasha Vukic and James Mooney were breaking the law.'
Having been granted the visa, Mooney was said to have asked for it to be reissued as it had only been granted for 11 months as opposed to the full year requested, jurors were told.
This attracted the attention of issuing officer Lindsey Moore, who knew the couple and recalled visiting their flat in the autumn of 2010 before a night out.
On that visit, Mrs Moore had found Vukic annoyed that their maid was late, it is claimed.
Mrs Moore is then said to have heard that the couple had sacked the unreliable maid shortly afterwards and found a replacement called Rose - months later than claimed on the application form.
Further investigation revealed a log showing the previous maid, Georgina, had not handed in her security pass until November 2, 2011 and that Rose had only been issued her first pass sixteen days later, the court heard.
The maid named Georgina was interviewed and confirmed that she had been sacked ‘a few months before Christmas 2010’ after being accused of stealing around £4, it is claimed.
A search of Mooney’s staff email uncovered a message sent by him to a colleague, confirming he and Vukic had hired a new nanny, jurors heard.
Vukic, who had since returned to the UK, was arrested on June 8 last year. She had allegedly emailed a UKBA colleague, saying: 'It’s not looking good, I’ll speak to you later.'
Vukic denied the allegation, as did her partner when he returned to the UK for an interview later that month.
Mooney even claimed that Mrs Moore ‘did not like him because he went out drinking with her husband,’ the court heard.
The trial continues.

But, not that I wholly agree with use of Joomla here (perhaps they do that to reduce costs or they have their reasons).
