WebmastersRe: We Present To You, The (voluntarily) Redesigned Nigeria.gov.ng by dnative(m): 4:45pm On Dec 06, 2011
Also worth remembering before slagging off criticism (either constructive, destructive, negative or positive) with 'where's your own or where were you when we were calling for contributors' - you took the challenge upon yourself to come up with something way better than the existing website and it is up to you to live up to the challenge regardless of resource or manpower constraints.

Don't expect critique to come from developers only. If this were to go to the Presidency for consideration, don't expect it would be the web techies that would give the final approval but the casual possibly web-saavy users who 'like the look' of the site above anything else.
WebmastersRe: We Present To You, The (voluntarily) Redesigned Nigeria.gov.ng by dnative(m): 3:17pm On Dec 06, 2011
Dual Core:
I am a bit confused now. I thought the original plan was to (voluntarily) build a fully functional site that can replace the present site and then we present it to whoever for endorsement. Its now looking like the project changed concept. The concept I am seeings now is we voluntarily build a prototype in a bid to get a paid contract to build the real site.
I can't agree better with this. If you set out to build a viable alternative to a Production website, then the output falls below par though the intention and effort is highly commendable.  IMHO I'd expected to see an end-product that is ready to an extent that the owner of the original website could say 'please can we take this one down today and put yours in place'.  "Si a officium est dignitas effectus is est dignitas effectus puteus"

What I would ask myself is this: If I'm the owner of the current nigerian gov website and I'm seeking to contract out a replacement design, would I contact the creators of this new website strictly on the basis of the redesigned website or just because they have tried and could do better if offered financial incentives? If going by solely by this new design, I would really be looking elsewhere.

PropertiesThe Large Expanse Of Land Across Chevron - Is This A New Estate? by dnative(op): 12:27pm On Nov 06, 2011
Does anyone know what the large expanse of land just to the right of Chevron roundabout coming from  Lekki is for? It seems it's being developed by JB and I can see from the road some lamp posts looking similar to street lights.

Is this an upcoming estate, is it already being marketed or fully subscribed (I won't be surprised - the location is quite prime). Any info please?

You go tell us say your papa na MD of the company where OP dey work? And what does it matter what role the OP is holding on the project? What don't you guys understand about the thread simply being about construction processes and methods as employed for a commercial building in the US. PropertiesPictorial Directory Of Estates In Lagos - Populated By Volunteers? by dnative(op): 3:02pm On Oct 30, 2011
@mod.  Can we possibly have a sticky thread on estates in different areas in Lagos whereby volunteers can help post:

pictures of major road approach to the estate
pictures of estate main and secondary gates
pictures of 1 or more roads in the estate

Being an active observer of different properties available for sale, I often see good offers being advertised in different estates in Lagos and would find it helpful if such information is available from a sticky thread serving as a sort of directory of estates in lagos and beyond.  I'm hopeful other Nairaland users will find this useful and could see such directory growing over time if people upload information from time to time. This could be a new thread and possibly with a more organized structure and not necessarily this thread. Just a thought. Thanks

@ Oyo State website

why does everyone seems to be missing the point. Quoting the OP " Guys, visit Oyostate.gov.ng you might get a cue from that. It wont be there for too long so be fast."
Doesn't this (bold text) suggest that this is a demo site with none or minimal active links? Although as someone mentioned, this should have been placed in a subfolder of the root if it is not yet live - but then again, each to his/her own methods. What if the client actually wants to see this demo on the root of the site? - we can't always fit every scenario into our own box, as much as we may wish!

IMHO, it looks a well presented site, at least from a demo and UI perspective compared to a lot of sites that has come up for review here. Unable to comment on the rest of the site features/functions until the links are active.

WebmastersRe: Calling On All Web Designers/developers: Redesign Of Nigeria.gov.ng by dnative(m): 8:00pm On Sep 17, 2011
Good call and about tyme too!!!

I can see this transforming into a formidable team to take on other rubbish federal government web sites, (customs, nysc,  etc to name a few) based on the success of this initiative.
@instinctng
Since the aim would be to (hopefully) hand over the site to the government, I was thinking there is no need per se, to register another "nigeria" domain. This might also double as those guys not seeing us as a threat but as partners.  Let's hold off on the domain stuff for now.  There will be plenty of time for this and others.  Let's rather focus on those who are "ready to serve".  Though this will be ongoing, I intend to end round 1 of volunteer solicitiation, based on demand so far, by September 18, 2011,
IMHO - The effort will always be seen as a threat by the various existing stakeholders for the obvious and not so obvious reasons. It may be ideal to actual position the team as such - the formidable (but non-commercial, non-profit oriented) alternative to those multi-million denominated FG web projects and initiatives that are nothing to write home about, the same way 'Open Source' had thrived (and still thriving) as a potent alternative to mainstream commercial solutions. However this will largely depend on the Naija factor not creeping in eventually as had already been highlighted and the primary motivation continues to be 'everything but the money'.

BTW - I have no skills or competence in the web development arena and unable to contribute technically to this project save for encouraging you guys.

May the Force be with you all !

When leprosy was rampant in some parts of Western Nigeria then, the prevalent practice was to banish infected persons (whole families or even minors included) to a lepers' colony (often in an isolated area in the bush) hence the adage 'a ko ni k'omode ma d'ete, to ba ti le da nikan sun igbo'

TravelRe: Are There Opportunity For Nigerian Migrant Wishing To Enter The Island Of Malta? by dnative(m): 6:29pm On Mar 30, 2011
There is nothing in Malta - nada, zero, zilch for an African migrant - legit or not.  Quite likely more than 95% Africans in Malta are stranded refugees that came over on a boat in a bid to get to Europe. Malta is meant to be a European tourist destination but it is a small island that has been overrun by African refugees with no opportunity to work or earn a decent wage. I was there on a cruise holiday last year and it is a sorry state the way Africans live over there. Please do not head for Malta by any means - better to stay in Naija if you can't make it to mainland Europe - my2c.
