When a central bank reduces the amount of cash in circulation, it does so for two major reasons:


1. To strengthen the currency by making it truly scarce.

2. To reduce inflation.


Other reasons (as in our case) is to reduce crimes such as kidnapping which has become almost commonplace in Nigeria. There is an economic term less cash, less crime


And to encourage cashless policy (which is a long-term plan).


I am sure you were not asleep when Emefiele was making plans to go cashless. His first conspicuous attempt was the e-naira. Why did you not link the e-naira to the 2023 election?

But it doesn't explain why CBN/Emefiele is in a hurry to stop the circulation of the old currencies very much before the General Elections.

Hence the very likely reason that just as much as curbing cash ransom payments it was also meant to curb vote buying.

How that effectively stops politicians from buying votes, we will see.
