SA has 18 qulfied gripen pilots and 54 hawk piolts(the 18 gripen pilots are in that list) this understanderbill since the last batch of gripen arrived last year and it takes 3 years to get you basic wings on the pitluss then you neen to qulfie on the hawk then finaly the gripen.

2sq has 6 qulfied pilots at any time from that 18. The others are on course, leave or seconded to other units.

2sq pilots are seconed has instructores and to test flights. They for example fly the cheeha's used by denel. There s all so a gripen and hawk used in test flights

This years number is not kowen but last year the grpinse reavhed 850 hours.


The A109 was the problem due to 2 groundings pending invesgastions. They only just started flying again.

2 squadron is your only Gripen squdron and it has only 6-8 pilots flying. If your so called reserve pilots are not flying, they have no qualification to fly the gripens talk-less fight with them.They are not fighter pilots. c'est fini.(By the way, how can you have so many un-used Gripens sitting idle and reserve pilots at the same time?)

I have seen photos dated 3 November 2013 of NAF 931, an Alenia ATR 42-500 MPA Surveyor plane.

Well the gist is that the airframe has been put through upgradation and is now fully ELINT-compliant.

The said photo shows the ATR 42-500 MPA surveillance plane before and after the ELINT upgrade. It shows a dome on the fuselage just behind the wings, post-upgradation.

The Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, must explain why things have been allowed to deteriorate to the extent that the South African Air Force’s (SAAF) Agusta 109 light utility helicopters have effectively been grounded.

Thirty Agusta 109 helicopters were purchased at the cost of approximately R 1.95 billion as part of the arms deal to replace the SAAF’s 40-year old Alouette helicopter.

However, just 14 years later the Agusta 109 helicopters are reportedly effectively grounded.

The budget for the SAAF’s “helicopter capability” has been slashed from R915 million in 2012/13 to R 769 million in 2013/14.

Because of this only 71 flying hours have reportedly been allocated to the operational fleet of approximately 20 Agusta 109 helicopters.

This means that there are reportedly insufficient flying hours to actually fly the Agusta 109 helicopters.

The 18 Agusta 109 pilots are reportedly not able to fly the minimum number of hours required to maintain their qualifications

The situation is so bad that there are rumours that a large proportion of the Agusta 109 light utility helicopters will have to be put into long-term storage.

Defenceweb writes that this “precarious financial and personnel situation” also led to the humiliation of the SAAF managing to keep its specialist maritime helicopters aloft for fewer than a dozen hours, during last month’s joint peacekeeping exercise with United States in the Eastern Cape.

The Federal Government will soon deploy satellites to trace movement of suspected terrorists and their locations in the country. The Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr Seidu O. Mohammed said yesterday said there will be training sessions for the security agencies in the next few weeks.

FIJI will be the data collection hub for a space mission to Mars by the Indian Government.

"We will be going on the ship-bound terminals and getting the data, transmitting to our launch centre from our ship and those data will be used for the satellite, further establishing the mission, doing the Mars capture and then start orbiting Mars."

Mr Zaheer said the trajectory of the rocket would be over Fiji.

"There are some technical perimeters which defines the trajectory. The duration will be 25 days."

India's High Commissioner to Fiji Vinod Kumar said with the purpose of tracking, ISRO scientists and other concerned agencies would be in Fiji monitoring aboard the two Indian ships from two different points in the Pacific ocean.

He said the Indian Deep Space Network would perform the navigation and tracking operations of the mission while NASA Deep Space Network will provide support services during the non-visible period of the Indian Deep Space Network.

Mr Kumar said ISRO would use its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle Rocket with the objective to develop technologies required for design, planning, management and operations of an interplanetary mission.

"Fiji has been chosen for its ideal location, being a communication hub and our close and friendly relations," he said.

"We are thankful to the government of Fiji and other agencies for their support in this mission. Such visits contribute to strengthening our relations and would also be helpful in developing relations in the area of science and technology."

He said the team would present the model rocket and satellite to President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau today.

The Mars Orbiter Mission carries a thermal infra-red imaging spectrometer to map Mars' surface composition and mineralogy.
