The following messages were sent to SANDU by soldiers currently in the DRC, there are concerns that are being raised by our troops contradicting statements by SANDF management and even that of The Commander in chief President Jacob Zuma. This is the feeling of our troops in DRC.

i still am of the belief that we can reactivate the jaguars.The Indians have completely reworked theirs without the British,updating the avionics,adding their own weapon systems and are currently considering an even more powerful engine,all without British help. The jag together with the Mirage is their only capable front Line Nuclear delivery platform. Not to Mention that they have made it BVR capable.

A possible new radar for the f-7's ?

The Aviation Industry Corporation of China's (AVIC's) Wuxi-based Radar and Avionics Research Institute detailed two of the People's Liberation Army Air Force's (PLAAF) airborne radar sets at the recent World Radar Fair in Beijing.

First up is the Falcon S-7 radar, which is based on the Alenia Grifo S-7 radar and has been installed in different variants of the Chengdu F-7 fighter aircraft. AVIC stated that the latest model of this radar has a track-while-scan envelope with a 90 km look-up and 80 km in look-down range in the air-to-air mode. In the air-to-surface mode, it can acquire sea targets out to ranges of 150 km in ideal conditions, extending that to 240 km over land.

The United Nations has appealed for more troops and equipment for its peacekeeping force in Mali.

The UN force, which took over security duties in July, has less than half of its mandated strength of more than 12,000 military personnel.

Bert Koenders, the UN's special representative to Mali, said recent attacks had been a "wake-up call".

He said the force, known as Minusma, needed more resources in order to stabilise the north of the country.

SAAF says Gripens being rotated, not stored

Some of the South African Air Force's fleet of 26 Saab Gripen fighter jets will not be placed in storage but will rather be flown on a rotational basis, according to an Air Force official. Earlier this year it was reported that 12 Gripens had been placed in storage as there was not enough money, nor pilots, to fly them.


South African Air Force (SAAF) Director of Combat Systems, Brigadier General John Bayne, last week told the Seriti commission investigation allegations of impropriety into the multibillion rand arms deal that no Gripens, or Hawk fighter-trainers, had been placed in long-term storage as it would be too expensive to reactivate them.

Bayne said the SAAF's 2 Squadron at Air Force Base Makhado would fly the Gripen fleet in rotation instead, with some aircraft being put in short-term storage between flying cycles in order to minimise the risk of corrosion. Flying hours would thus be spread evenly across the entire Gripen fleet.

And on only 8 pilots.

18 Gripen aircrew (navigators and pilots) have been trained up to operational status to date and 52 Hawk aircrew have been trained so far.
