Durban - Twelve Gripen fighter jets that were bought as part of the controversial arms deal more than a decade ago are being kept in mothballs.

This was revealed by Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula on Tuesday.

Responding to a parliamentary question, she said the aircraft had been placed in long-term storage, adding that this was “in line with their utilisation and the budget expenditure patterns/flow of the SA Air Force”.

Nigerian Navy to export war ships

Lagos – The Nigerian Navy says it is building commercial war ships for export within the African countries.

The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Adm. Dele Ezeoba, said this on Tuesday when he inspected the second indigenous patrol ship under construction at the Naval Dockyard, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Ezeoba expressed confident that the Nigerian Navy was skilled enough to build patrol ships between 10 and 38 metres in size for export.

“The Nigerian Navy will no longer buy a ship of between 10 and 12 metres in size, because we have the capacity and capability to build them in our dockyard,’’ he said.

According to him, the ship under construction is in the same class with first indigenous 31 metres patrol ship, NSS Andoni, but was redesigned and upgraded to 38 metres.

Ezeoba said that the ship building business would not only attract economic value but create job for hundreds of thousands of Nigerians in the maritime sector and beyond.

He assured that the second indigenous ship would be delivered to Nigerian Navy by the dockyard for its inauguration into the fleets latest by June 2014.

At the NSS Beecroft, the Naval Chief also inaugurated four new patrol shaldag mante boats to enhance operational capability of the base in addition to the six of their class which were inaugurated in December 2012.

Earlier, while addressing officers and rating at the Naval Training Command, Apapa, Ezeoba announced plan to build a new Navy barrack in Abuja in order to address the accommodation problem in the service.

He said that the Naval Headquarters was looking at the possibility of channelling the lodging allowances of officers and ratings, which amounted to N3.6 billion annually, into building more houses within a year.(NAN)

Afren climbed as much as 13 percent to 168 pence, the highest intraday price since July 2011. The stock traded at 159.6 pence as of 8:52 a.m. local time.
The company raised its estimate of recoverable oil at the Ogo prospect, drilled with Optimum Petroleum Development Ltd. and Lekoil Ltd. (LEK), to 774 million barrels from 202 million barrels. Nigeria, Africa’s biggest oil-producing nation, accounts for most of Afren’s sales, providing it with cash to invest elsewhere including in South Africa and Kurdistan.
“Based on the well data, the partners have identified volumes in excess of our pre-drill estimates,” Chief Executive Officer Osman Shahenshah said today in a statement. Drilling at the prospect has now been suspended.
Afren, which said last month that 2013 production will be at the upper end of its forecast, has gained 22 percent this year in London.

Fighter Pilot: I beg to differ. The question is what have all these African nations attained ever since they gained independence from their colonial masters as compared to their Asians counterparts who also happened to be slaves of the same masters. When Asian and African countries gained independence, visually were all on the same level of development. From early 1960's to date many African countries hardly have anything to show of development other than consistent civil wars, corruption and militancy. Asian countries have since developed beyond recognition and nobody would ever blame colonisation on their part. Pointing fingers on the forgoten history will not help, because colonists never took all the cruide oil and mineral resources with them to Europe and why do we have to continue to blame them for our curses. Greed, averice and selfishness harbored by African leaders is what really drag Africa down in terms of development. An African mental set-up really need an urgent repair, because they suffer inferiority complex themselves when they are in company of europeans. Why is it that Africans always view Europeans as more cleaver than them and as the threat that wants to take advantage of them. Why can't they change their mental set-up a bit and perceive themselves as more superior than Europeans and wherever possible take advantage of them thereof.

OYO Empire

Mozambique has decided to re-establish a jet fighter capability by contracting the Romanian company Aerostar to refurbish MiG-21 aircraft for its air force (Força Aérea de Moçambique - FAM).

Photographs published recently on a Romanian aircraft spotter website showed a MiG-21, (probably a MiG-21bis), with a FAM roundel, flying at Bacau international airport in Romania, which is used by the aeronautical company Aerostar.

Another photograph published in September showed a MiG-21UM with the same camouflage scheme undergoing an engine test at Bacau.

Aerostar confirmed to IHS Jane's that it began to refurbish MiG-21s for Mozambique earlier this year, but declined to provide further details.

Angola signed a USD1 billion arms deal last week with Russia that includes a batch of 18 Sukhoi Su-30K fighter aircraft, as well as Mi-17 helicopters, tanks, artillery, and small arms, Russian newspaper Vedomosti reports, quoting sources close to Russia's arms export corporation.

The Su-30Ks are former Indian Air Force aircraft supplied to Delhi in the late 1990s as interim training aircraft before India received its first Su-30MKI multirole fighters. They are considerably less sophisticated than the Su-30MKIs that replaced them in Indian service, with neither thrust-vectoring engine nozzles or canard foreplanes, as well as less advanced avionics.

Moscow has sought a buyer for the aircraft since they were returned by India in 2007 and have been sent to a maintenance facility at Baranovichy in Belarus for overhaul.

Well, this was inevitable. For a record fourth time, the Bofors FH77-B05-L52 gun has been offered for India's 155-mm towed competition for 1,580 guns. Essentially a reiteration of an offer it has gotten painfully used to putting on the table, BAE Systems was one of the recipients of a fresh RFI that was issued recently, effectively signalling the cancellation of the earlier competition.

In a statement today, BAE Systems said it had, "[S]ubmitted a response to the Indian Ministry of Defence's latest RFI for towed 155mm howitzers, following previous tenders which were cancelled due to the inability of other potential suppliers to meet the tender conditions. The company's offer will be based on the FH77 B05 155mm howitzer, and a significant proportion will be manufactured in India to meet the specific needs of the Indian Army."

Tata claims this "21st century" 155 mm, 52 calibre gun can extend the reach of India's artillery firepower to 52 km. The existing 155 mm, 39 calibre Bofors guns of the Indian Army have a range below 30 km. Not a single new artillery gun has been inducted by India since the scam-tainted Bofors deal of 1986.

zaandrew: I find it odd that nigeria got there's upgraded before india. Since india only just teseted a protyp of the FH77L45 and swedden has yet to put in to serves there L52s so how did nigiria jump the line?

And the L52 is not just chaing the barrel the FH77 B05 is a lot more it has new fir control coputors(somthing you mocked and said was not needed) ammunastion handling, you need to modfie the entire platform. Yes you could just switch the L39 barrel for a L52 that is not hard but then you limting your self.

The L52 is fully tested,but Bofors has a serious issue with India over a Bribery scandal much worse than your countries arms procurement scandal,they were blacklisted for a long time and the indian Army had issues maintainig their Gun,hence i think they started their own project.The blowout of the scandal continues but India is restarting relations with Bofors,

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — Extremists from three neighboring countries are fighting in Nigeria's northeastern Islamic uprising, according to an alleged captured extremist whose account reinforces fears that one of Africa's most powerful Islamic militant groups is growing closer to al-Qaida affiliates and that radical movements are spilling across national boundaries.

"We do have members from Chad, Niger and Cameroon who actively participate in most of our attacks," said a young man presented to journalists Friday night by Nigeria's military as a captured fighter of the Boko Haram terrorist network.

He added: "I did not see any act of religion in there. We are just killing people, stealing and suffering in the bush."

Recently Boko Haram has carried out brutal attacks on mainly Muslim civilians. The new assaults "offer vital and disturbing insights" that "not only confirm many of the group's earlier developments but also al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb's, or AQIM's, growing influence over it," Jonathan Hill, senior lecturer at the Defence Studies Department of King's College, London, wrote in an analysis published online this month at africanarguments.org.

"These atrocities bear many striking similarities to those carried out by AQIM and its various forbears in Algeria," wrote Hill, who is the author of "Nigeria Since Independence: Forever Fragile?"

Boko Haram has long been known to be receiving funding from abroad. Founding father Mohammed Yusuf was receiving funds from Iran, Sudan and Saudi Arabia back in the 1990s, according to Hill. Saudi Arabia, despite its status as a Western ally, for decades has been exporting to West and East Africa its Wahabi brand of purist Islam that, beyond the Middle Eastern kingdom's borders, has been taken to extremes.

Niger and Chad both have said they fear infiltration by Boko Haram. Boko Haram members from Nigeria and neighboring Niger were arrested in December in Cameroon, according to a report from Jacob Zenn, an analyst for The Jamestown Foundation and author of the report "Northern Nigeria's Boko Haram: The Prize in al-Qaeda's Africa Strategy." He quoted the imam of a grand mosque in southern Senegal as claiming that Boko Haram was recruiting local youths there in August 2012.

In a report written in January, before the military crackdown, Zenn said international collaboration between Boko Haram and militants in northern Mali, the Sahel, Somalia and other countries in the Muslim world have allowed Boko Haram to grow into an organization that "has now matched — and even exceeded — the capabilities of some al-Qaida affiliates."

zaandrew: Hundreds of poachers have been captuerd. But since rhino horn costs more than gold. So there are all ways more poor mozibquens to walk accross the border. How ever SA still has the highest number of Rhinos in the world.

The milltary does not do anti poaching, it does border patrols in the kruger nastional park. They cover a small area of ground in a area of land the size of israle.

Thats my point @ swanky@vodamail,hundreds of boko haram islamists have been killed/captured,but because they dont care about their lives they keep coming. Containing insurgents dressed as civilians in an assymetrical war in an area as massive as North east Nigeria is no mean feat.
